HOW TO SURVIVE A HORROR MOVIE: ALL THE SKILLS TO DODGE THE KILLS is, on the surface, a satirical look at horror movies and slasher films. But author Seth Grahame-Smith is not merely dismissing horror films as hackneyed dreck; rather, he is having a ripping good time by poking fun at the well-known cliches of a genre he obviously loves, and he's inviting other genre fans to come along for the joyride. Parodying those nuclear-holocaust, natural-disaster, and Y2K survival manuals that were ubiquitous in the 20th century, the book's format is simple: the reader is asked to put himself or herself in the position of a horror-movie victim, then the author offers "experienced" instruction on how to avoid the various perils the reader is likely to face in common horror-film scenarios. Admittedly, those who are not horror fans probably won't get all the jokes and gags, but this pseudo survival guide is a hilarious and nostalgic romp through the conventions of cinematic horror that is certain to delight and entertain hardcore fans of the genre.

Excellent parody of those military, natural disaster, camping survival guide books that by the end of it has you ready to survive when it suddenly dawns on you - hey this situation looks like I'm in a horror movie! Oh no what do I do? If you're not sure you are in fact actually in this situation a handy chapter at the front will allow you to be sure.

Various chapters that follow are Slasher Survival School, where you'll learn about the five types of slashers and how to defeat them. What to do if you did something last summer, how to survive a night babysitting and much more. Inanimate Evil - The Manmade Instruments of Death teaches readers how to survive a haunted house, an evil vehicle, killer doll and importantly how to tell if an object is indeed evil. Crypt-Ography-Ghosts, Zombies and the Reanimated basically teaches you how to survive against various undead foe. Plus this chapter makes a good point against those killing zombies not really being "big man" type heroes, pointing out how slow these things move, their minimum brain capacity meaning you could just run away instead of stupidly barricading an isolated house and so forth.

Fangs of Fury - Aliens and Beasts tackles space set movies, aliens, as well as animals back here on earth. Chapter 666 The Satanic Versus-Curses Demons and The Devil Himself teaches those rural readers amongst us what to do if your cornfield is infested with children. For everyone how to perform an exorcism, what to do if you've only got 7 days to live and the biggest task of them all, how to defeat Satan, where girls, you'll learn the male population, well if you come across Satan you'll be wishing you were a man.

If humorous human peril survival guides against what we hope we will only ever come across in the movies, is your type of thing, also get Max Brook's The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead as well as Daniel H Wilson's How To Survive a Robot Uprising: Tips on Defending Yourself Against the Coming Rebellion.

The Superman Handbook: The Ultimate Guide to Saving the Day and The Action Hero's Handbook: are also good tongue in cheek entertainment themed survival guides. Whilst not survival guides How to Rule the World: A Handbook for the Aspiring Dictator and Hardly Working: The Overachieving Underperformer's Guide to Doing as Little as Possible in the Office are also good and written in the same sort of tongue in cheek style.

This book is hilarious and so well-written. I picked it up in a theater gift shop while waiting for friends, and ended up buying it to give to someone who loves horror movies. But I had to read it myself before passing it on. It's great - so funny.

I have to hand it to the author, he certainly knows his horror movies. This book was fun to read; very entertaining and brought back a lot of memories about many of the horror movies I'd seen. If you want some light, funny, laugh out loud reading, this is a great book to read. I'm still boggled by the author's knowledge! Fun read!

Chris Van Dusen is a marvelous illustrator/author who is able to think the way a kid thinks. "If I Built a Car" has been a favorite of all the young boys I know and a few girls too. Nope, I'm not Chris' mother. Just an avid fan.

I LOVE this book!

I can't begin to say enough good things about this book by Chris van Dusen. His story about a boy on his quest to build the perfect car is genius. What an imagination! The illustrations alone would be reason enough to buy the book, but the catchy rhyming verse keeps you turning page after page to see what he will dream up next. I also loved the 1950's feel to the book that takes you back to a time when cars were cool, and the designs were slick. We have bought this book for other children that love books about cars, and it has always been a big hit.

The illustrations are my favorite part of this book. Amazing. The colors and shapes remind me of spending time with my grandparents. That alone is enough to make me love this book.

The poem is fun also. I plan to use this with my students for word choice and poetry. I think it will make a great read aloud. It did win the E.B. White Read Aloud Award a few years ago.

My daughters, ages 2 and 4, just love Chris VanDusen's books. The illustrations are colorful and fun and the text is a ball to read aloud. This particular book is about a boy imagining the car he would build to replace the family wagon. My kids loved finding mixed among the illustrations characters from VanDusen's Magee and Dee books.

Love it, Love it, Love it!

My father bought this book for my boys over a year ago. It has become one of our favorite books EVER! I am in complete awe of the incredibly colorful pictures that fill this book. The rhyming flows off the tongue, and I find it so clever and fun to read. It is one of those books that I can actually read over and over again and not get sick of it! Outstanding and witty.

Collins gets it. Baseball people have a certain way about them, and Collins obviously is one of them; he also knows how to write about them. This book--an in-depth and endearing look at the 2002 Chatham A's of the Cape Cod Baseball League--shines with the polish of good baseball writing about a great baseball subject. The players and team staff come to life, as does the ebb and flow of a summer on the cape. The poignancy of this moment in time, in these specific lives and in this specific baseball season, got me a little misty-eyed at the end. These are the kinds of dreams everyone should have, at least once in awhile, even when they have to come to an end.

This is such a big part of why I love baseball.

This is a terrific book for any fan of baseball. The book discusses three main characters in how they came to baseball how they played growing up and in college and then how the fare in the Cape League. I've passed the book on to several others who have loved it as well. A must for any baseball fan.

Simply a fantastic book. Well-researched, intriguing, personal, etc. Shows why baseball is unique as compared to all other sports. There are so many nuances always to explore. The Central Illinois League, another amateur summer league, is a good example of a smaller version of the Cape Cod League as well. Either way, this book was an easy read on a long plane ride. No other sport could have produced a book's topic/story like this. Well done, Mr. Collins. Well done, baseball, as always.

Only complaint - Needed pictures!

This is a great book on breeds. Although, I believe that
the ASPCA's Complete Guide to Dogs was much more helpful in
my research on the breeds. Even though Legacy of the Dog has
200 breeds, I believe the ASPCA's Complete Guide to Dogs tells
you more of how the breed acts, and the amount of exercise the dog needs and energy they have, while the Legacy of Dogs seems to more tell you where the breed comes from and how they appear... It is a great book, but when compared.... It comes in second in my dog breed collection.

There is the common breeds like the Golden Retriever and the Labrador and than there's the uncommon ones like the Neopolitan Mastiff and the Koohikerhondje. If you like dogs or want to do some resaerch, this book has alot of good info.

This book contains fantastic photographs and brief write-ups of 200 breeds of dogs. I would have liked more information on each breed, especially info on temperament. The photos are top-notch, however, beautifully done. Definitely a good, though pricy, general guide to review when you are considering what kind of dog to buy.

More than just Life in the Womb

Review Date: 2008-10-30
Most of the reviews I read about this book talked about how amazing the pictures of the pre-born babies are. While this is true, the book is not focused on just the babies in the womb. Only about a third of the book features the babies: pages 36-152 cover conception, the embryo, and the fetus. Pages 156-268 cover other portions of the bodies systems: organs, brain, bone, bacteria, etc.

The pictures are all very interesting, to be sure, but I do wonder why hardly anyone mentioned the other parts of the book.

As an artist and photographer I was inspired by the beauty captured in the images of Nilsson's book "Life", but as a doctor with some knowledge of the subject, I was intrigued by how amazing the body really is. He has caught certain actions and moments (like conception) that were never seen so clearly before. The electronmicroscopy is astounding! Although this book is almost entirely photographs, without text, everyone who reads or views the book will find a new respect and awe for "Life" and how incredible our bodies are constructed and how we reproduce. This photographic journey is truly inspiring!

I can't begin to describe my difficulties of growing into the body I am going to have as a woman, but I don't have to because Jessica did it for it for me. There are very few ways to describe how it feels to read "Do I look fat in this?" except to say it's freeing. As I turned the pages I would eat up every word & little by little i could breathe easier.
Jessica is the start of something amazing that i want to be a part of!!

I loved Jessica Weiner's books A Very Hungry Girl and Do I Look Fat In This. Therefore, when I saw she had a "new" book out, I immediately ordered it from Amazon without paying attention to details. Please be aware that if you already own Do I Look Fat In This, you do not need to order Life Doesn't Begin 5 Pounds From Now; this is the same book with a different title and a new forward. So now I own two copies of this book with different covers, but I don't mind so much because it is filled with wonderful information for not-slim women like me. Guess I must have needed to re-read it, huh?

If you're tired of dieting, this may be the book for you. Jess's book is a breakthrough experience for anyone who has struggled with self-appearance and self-esteem....and isn't that most of us. She believes that by focusing on what others tell you are your shortcomings-- you miss opportunities to feel connected, sexy and powerful. Whether you're a size 2 , 12 or 22 or beyond-- you can benefit from Jess's words of wisdom. The motivational speaker, author and self-described "actionist" versus Activist...writes in plain English and tosses in some great motivational quotes from famous people and some fun facts about self approval and more. Twelve chapters plus an afterword are included..and the chapters are fun to read-- get this even if you don't have the time to read it-- just scan it and you'll benefit -- I promise...ANyway the chapters range from Decoding the Language of Fat...to the Famous or should I say infamous question most women ask daily "Do I look Fat in This? to "I Feel Fat" to If I were Thinner, He'd Love me" to Thunder Thighs Run in my Family to Ch 6-- I'd be so happy if I looked like a Celebrity to 7) Once I lose some weight..... to 8) All of my Friends are not and I'm not...9) But I'm jsut trying to be healthy to 11) [...] 12) Sorry I don't speak that language. Quizes, roleplaying experiences and fun quizes are interspersed with TAKE ACTION steps...Probably the most important thought though is that YOU CAN"T FEEL FAT -- because fat is not a feeling-- and if you read that section alone (I don't want to steal her thunder with her response to this) ...you'll benefit greatly...AN amazing lady and a fun, easy-to-read book that's great for girls above 12, teens, college chicks and women of any age...great to get this before the holiday parties start! Fun birthday gift...

This is a good book to read if you are a serious yoga practitioner or teacher, since it reviews in a simplified way the Yogasutras of Patanjali and Iyengar's point of view on life and life experiences. It has nothing to do with religion, it is just a different take on life that might prove useful and enlightening.

As usual Lynn Kurland has hit the mark. This is the second book in the series and I found it so engrossing I just couldn't put it down. Her charters come alive and enfold you in their lives. I found myself laughing out loud at their joys, crying at their sorrows and my heart pounding hard when they were in trouble. I can hardly wait for the third book to come out.

I had forgotten how into the first book in the Nine Kingdoms series I was until I got five pages into this second volume and instantly remembered. Oh, right. This story totally rocks. The first volume, Star of the Morning (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 1), ends in utter chaos. Nothing is resolved, everyone's in peril, and I remember closing the book in disbelief at the audacity of ending a book in such a way when the sequel would not be out for another year. I wasn't too upset, of course, because the book had been so dang enjoyable.

Fortunately, THE MAGE'S DAUGHTER picks up right where its predecessor left off. The chapters alternate between Morgan of Melksham's story as she struggles to survive after destroying the Sword of Angesand and fleeing the Archmage of Neroche, and Miach of Neroche's story as he struggles to keep the realm intact and find Morgan at the same time. Morgan and Miach are both such sympathetic characters. You desperately want them to work out their differences and accept who they are because they deserve a measure of happiness after all they've been through. That and the fact that you want them to join their awesome forces to defeat the perfidious Lothar and figure out just what kind of ubercrap is creeping out of Bain's Well. I enjoyed this book so much I unconsciously dragged it out, savoring every chapter. It's terrifically entertaining and I love Lynn Kurland's writing style. Highly recommended to anyone who loves a good adventure. But make sure you grab Star of the Morning (The Nine Kingdoms, Book 1) first!

The Mage's Daughter picks up with Morgan, back on Melksham Island, trying to recover her strength (and heart) after a near-death experience. Miach has been using his mage powers to check up on her during this time.

When Morgan decides to go back to Gobhan, home of Scymgeour Weger, Miach cannot sense her anymore. He goes in search of her, desperate to make sure she is safe. When he learns of where she is he goes after her. He is determined to do anything to get her out of there, even if it means earning Weger's mark. A series of events unfold, leading to the discovery of many important things.

--The series just keeps getting better! The relationship between Morgan and Miach is beautiful, and well done. The events that unfold keep you at the edge of your seat. I made the mistake of beginning this book when I had a lot of things to get done. I couldn't put it down! The ending is great and I didn't feel cheated at all. I cannot wait until the third book comes out. Highly recommended!

I liked the first installment of this series but boy, this second book really got me hooked. I like Miach before but now I am totally obsessed with him. Please tell me a more perfect hero...handsome, intelligent, strong, loyal, powerful, resourceful, magical(in more ways than one), sensitive, will do anything for his love...but then again, somehow LK makes him believable and human too.

Morgan was kind of a cry-baby in this book, but all things considered, it was still acceptable. Even in book one she didn't strike me as the hardened mercenary sword-maiden she wanted to be. She was still tender and sensitive inside. In book II, after learning her parentage, one can understand why. What I like is that she didn't play hard-to-get, or hold on to misunderstanding. She was honest with her feelings towards Miach. Together, their tender moments make my heart melt...

I love this trilogy. Bravo to LK and can't wait for the next book.

This gem of book is written for anyone trying to bring more purpose and direction for their life beyond their job title. The premise of this book is that if we spend as much time planning our personal lives as we do our careers, we can live an enriching life, and gain personal success with less anxiety. This is a simple concept, but it makes sense. How many times have you sacrificed sleep, exercise, family, or mental health for your career? We all do it!

Written like a workbook, Marketing guru Robert Michael Fried walks you through how to write your own 12-point life plan, via various exercises that guide through what matters most to you, discovering your life purpose, strengths, and what he describes as your "authentic" self. Fried's life plan mirrors the successful marketing strategies that he used as a marketing executive for several Fortune 500 companies throughout the years. If you are a business owner, you'll recognize how Fried's life plan parallels a business plan. For example, Fried's first life point is figuring out who you are, and who you want to become, which parallels the first step of writing a business or marketing plan (defining the business you are in).

Overall, I highly recommend as a workbook for life coaches, busy professionals, business owners, and anyone looking for a little direction in their life.

I've read thousands of books like this one, and had fairly low expectations when I started reading this book. After all, it doesn't pretend to break new ground with primary research.

As you go through the 12 steps, you begin to realize that Fried is covering ALL the important things you should be working on. This is more than a checklist, it's a tool for life planning in a smart small package.

I started off thinking this would be a good resource for my children and young adults (it is).. but before I was through, I was examining my own life choices, and found some great joy in most of it, with some concrete ideas about changes I'd like to make.

I judge a book like this on it's ability to stimulate my thinking. One idea is worth the purchase price. However, in this case, I got WAY MORE than I bargained for... and a marketing plan for the rest of my life.
