I began reading "Maps of the Mind" in the mid-eighties, and have found this to be the most important, inspiring and influential books I've ever read. The authors' suggestions of possible appliations of hemispheric specialization upon biblical, historical and mythological events are facinating and insightful. This book makes a geunine attempt at reassemling "humpty dumpty". No other publication (that I've read) even dares to attempt to "make sense of" and "unify" practically every religions, philosophical, political, mythological and acedemic "ideas", "concepts" and "phenomena". This is my #1 choice of books, and I've both recommended it to others, and given several copies away to friend. Read this book!

Completely indespensible to anyone interested in the mind

I encountered this book in the late 80's, and it became one of the most influential books in my life.

This book, essentially collates, combines, and compares theories of how the human mind works, finding parallels, offering interpretations, and finding intersections of ideas. From Frued to Marx, Jung to Blake, it's an amazing trip through explanations of "us," and served as my first introduction to concepts of cybernetics and feedback in mental and information systems.

If you're involved in psychology, social work, programming, writing, anything that touches on the mind and information, get it and read it. You'll be a much richer person for it.

This book, essentially collates, combines, and compares theories of how the human mind works, finding parallels, offering interpretations, and finding intersections of ideas. Beginning with historical and religious ideas, it differentiates among more than 50 main concepts including those of Freud, Jung, Fromm, Marx, Erikson, Piaget, Maslow, Russell, Buber, Chomsky, and Marcuse. It's an amazing trip through explanations of "us," and serves as an introduction to concepts of cybernetics and feedback in mental and information systems.

I bought this book years ago, and now need to replace it. With a brilliant layout of a cartoon, an abstract, and then a one or two page essay, Charles describes how people have thought about mind from very early times. His summaries are absolutely brilliant, and the insights from Freud to de Bono to ... are illuminating.

A Great Mind at Work

Review Date: 2005-04-23
This book is the best example of a fine mind at work that I know of. Although I first read it in the 1980s, it still is current and continues to convey complex and timeless knowledge about the mind in an understandable, non-polemic, yet in an eclectic and fresh way.

The volume is dense but segmented into bite-sized frames with diagrams and pictures that intentionally take the content out into the third dimension and makes it less formidable. And although it is segmented into bite-sized frames, the reader's appetite for learning about the concepts of psychology -- from Gregory Bateson, Freud, Rollo May to Ernest Becker and Otto Rank -- will be more than satisfied.

The leitmotif of the volume is the idea of connectedness. There are three messages: Humanity is about wholeness; survival of the planet is about wholeness; and living a rich and full life is about self-knowledge and wholeness.

It covers the waterfront of what we knew about human psychology and the mind up to the 1980s. And although the frontiers of psychology have moved ahead somewhat, the book was so far ahead of its times that even 25 years later it remains fresh and current.

It is an academic tour de force that leaves a deep impression on the reader and is a book that has been an invaluable companion to me in my writings. Ten stars.

A Meeting of Minds is an impressive feat. The story operates on multiple levels, with the characters facing challenges both professional and personal. The tensions and conflicts develop smoothly and steadily; and they play out in a way that leaves the reader satisfied and engrossingly entertained. Elizabeth Calloway has combined her business insights with a truly talented writing ability--the result of which is a unique novel. Hopefully it is the first of many.

Elizabeth Calloway's moving, wryly intelligent take on the world of conventions and the city of Dallas is at once sophisticated and warmly funny. Calloway's prose is quietly heart-breaking, sharply focused, nostalgic and always, convincing as she creates a cast of characters who, in their struggles to succeed and find happiness, are sometimes their own worst enemies but sometimes their own best friends.
Much of the appeal of the novel lies in the city that it evokes -- not the stereotypical "Dallas" of J.R. but a place of parks and giant pecan trees, running trails and wandering creeks, glamorous restaurants and high fashion, lush suburbs and unique skyscrapers -- in short, a setting that is both nostalgic and wittingly contemporary. In a sense, Dallas is the main character itself, with its rituals, quarrels, passions and comforts.

This is a fast-paced tale of career and personal relationships troubled by misunderstanding and sometimes deliberate treachery.

Janie, a young mother, flees her unstable husband and wonders if an old friend could become a loving husband and father for her son. But her new love disappoints her, falling short of expectations.

Matney, busy with running a successful destination management company, must deal with the return home of her daughter and grandson.

Rhoades, so slick and smooth that even business savvy Matney is deceived, intends to steal Matney's company.

These unforgettable characters love and trust; complain and accommodate; connive and deceive.

In an innovative twist, instead of the son joining his father's business, it's the daughter bringing tension into her mother's company.

Just when the reader relaxes, believing that things will work out, more hurdles appear in front of characters struggling to balance personal aspirations with the requirements of home and family.

Oh, and I should mention that I am a Dallas transplant. Elizabeth Calloway has captured the wonderful and beautiful aspects of Dallas that make our city special.

If you enjoy watching "The Restaurant" or "The Apprentice," you'll love reading this corporate drama/family saga involving a female business owner, her coworkers, her family and how they're all entangled. Calloway has a smooth writing style with poetic descriptions of settings and vivid portrayals of strong emotions, creating an easygoing balance throughout the novel. In short, you'll feel like you KNOW these people . . . I recommend this book to any woman who has struggled to build a business while raising a family, or anyone who wants to try.

Like anyone who is an avid tango dancer, I look for great books (as well as videos and music) on my favorite pursuit. This book not only delivers the nuance and details tangueros are hungry for, but in an articulate, riveting way that leaves no technicality out - but never at the expense of the passion the author has for the dance itself. This is for the newcomer or experienced tango dancer - and it offers a shifting perspective of teacher/author to student of the dance/author - to the benefit of the reader. Grab it while you can!

Everything I need to know about tango, it's in there.

I am amazed at how Dr. Dave Turner managed to collect and present in his book such vast amount of information about tango, which sometimes can be subject to fantasies and even misunderstandings.

As tango dance instructor, especially non-Argentine born, I found that this book is a valuable reference material to keep nearby. From the origin of tango to the latest scoops of milonga (tango dance) scenes in Buenos Aires and from different styles of dance to variety of dance steps with detailed descriptions and clear illustrations, I can find everything I need to know in order to appreciate the complex and intriguing world of tango dance.

Wow - the best Tango instruction book I have found!

I was looking for a good Tango instruction book, with out much luck, until I took a chance on this one through an Amazon search. David Turner makes this instruction fun and alive. His experiences about challenges with making a movement work and solutions take this beyond a simple how-to book. He has learned both the followers and leaders parts so he can truly help both sides of the "conversation".

He is funny and experienced but not condescending. I appreciate he uses the Spanish names for the patterns, because I really want to learn that the thing I just did was a "ocho", and not that "cute little twisty thing". I make this point because one book I bought (and returned) had lovely step instructions, but did not use the Spanish names. A Tango student must be able to have the common language.

There are photo instructions which will help anyone with a little floor experience. He is hep to same-sex dancers and they will appreciate the discussion using the terms "leaders" and "followers", rather than "men and women".

David Turner is a Brit, regrettably for us Yanks, but he features the Bay Area's own Homer Ladas, and scored extra points in my book for that!

David Turner's 'A Pasion for Tango' is a great and easy read. You will not master Argentine Tango. You will, however, understand the process by which one often struggles with their self-enlightenment of what Tango is, was, and is to be. If you're at all curious about this complex and sometimes confusing social experience then Mr. Turner's book is a must read. You'll learn alot and probably laugh out loud with every turn of the page!

I like this book a lot and I think it will be useful to me for years. This author has brought an inquiring mind to tango and having asked a lot of questions has come up with an amazing amount of stuff. He is clealy addicted and must have spent loads of time on this book. You could read it from cover to cover but it probably works best as a reference book to turn to after a class or when you find that you have a problem with some move or other.

David Turner writes in an easy going and humorous style - I actually laughed out loud at times. Some of the descriptions of the complex movements are hard to follow bu the illustrations are very useful and if you concentrate, it pays off.

I found myself thinking, 'Aha! Of course I get it,' on so many occasions. I particularly liked the chapter on connection and the one on tango zen, whihc made me more at ease with some things I had struggled with. I like the way he passes on what he has learnt and is not afraid to say what he thinks about the way tango is taught.

What an excellent job Sandra has done! This book features great pictures and it is well-written. This book isn't meant to tell you how to spin or jump, but to explain what the sport is all about and what it means to the skaters. Bezic was once a skater herself (although she didn't win any major medals or events) and is now a choreographer and works for Stars on Ice. This book was excellent for the insight it gives to the reader. Anyone who enjoys skating for the beauty and grace should read this book--don't deprive yourself of a good piece of work as this is.

I received this book as a Christmas present a few years ago, and it is one of my favorites. Sandra Bezic begins the book by telling about her life as a skater and how she became one of the world's most prominent skating choreographers. She continues by describing what she feels the "passion to skate" is. Bezic takes the reader into the lives of many of the most popular skaters on the pro-circuit today including Kristi Yamaguchi, Brian Boitano, Ekaterina Gordeeva and the late Sergei Grinkov, Victor Petrenko, Kurt Browning, and Katarina Witt. She describes some of the competitive highlights these skaters have had as well as some of the projects they were working on at the time of print(Katarina Witt's Carmen on Ice)etc... Toward the end of the book is a small section dedicated to the Celebration of a Life Skating memoir to Sergei Grinkov. This book features many large color photos of all the skaters mentioned above. It is a great book and I highly recommend it.

Fabulous photos!!

This book gives an excellent "back stage" look at figure skating. While somewhat self-aggrandizing on Bezic's part, only her shows and those associated with them are included, this book would be an excellent choice for a variety of ages, skaters, fans, and photo or entertainment buffs.

I must say that even though Frank Turner fell from grace I had no idea that he was so addicted to drugs that he had to have a "transition team" just to get by in the Detroit market. It was inspirational to learn that he is healed body and soul. It reminded me of my own encounter with God. We can all relate to what he wrote. It took guts to reveal himself in such a profound way. I admire him for being able to to that. The book is well worth reading.

"Raised from the Dead" by Frank Turner, is the personal testimony of America's First Evangelical Anchorman. Ironically, the first book that I read in one day, "Hope for the Flowers", had the same wonderful message for me. March 11, 1971 is when my life changed forever. The other book was about crawling catapillers, that God changed to beautiful butterflies, as only He can do.

This is one man's story about abandonment and sexual abuse as a child, in addition to smoking pure cocaine. It's about his marriage to the daughter of Louis Farrakhan. It is also about drug use and trafficking. It is about salvation, deliverance, healing and restoration. But if you are seeking for truth in your own life, I promise you this book will show you the miracle that happens when you reach out and ask God to change your heart, change your mind and turn you into that beautiful person that He intended you to be. (Remember the butterfly?)

I'm the mother of five children and a grandmother of eleven. I've never had Frank Turner's horrendous experiences in life, but I could relate to him just because I was a lost, self-righteous soul headed for hell until that awesome day, March 11, 1971, when God called my name and changed my eternal destination. "Old things passed away, He made all things new."

Thank God I was forever changed just as you will be after you read what God did in Frank Turner's life and what God wants to do in each of His children's lives.

Thank you for sharing your story and I'm praying that you enjoy His miracles that are "new every day".

Gratefully Yours,

Rarely has a Christian biography like RAISED FROM THE DEAD by Frank Turner, grabbed my attention and wouldn't let go from the first page to the very last. Seldom have I read one with the really "hard" issues in it. This is Reality at its worst and its very Best.

The thoughts, experiences, and word images are so artfully written that they seem burned into my memory. I was disappointed when the book ended. RAISED FROM THE DEAD is captivating, riveting, challenging and with a bit of humor thrown in. The way this author has with words, makes the reader stop to marvel and meditate at the depth of his thoughts and the beauty of language.

The best part of course, is how Frank Turner brings you right into the experiences with him--from the deepest pit of addiction to the heights of his love for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and his Nicky. This author doesn't cop out and whitewash his "before" story so as not to offend Christians' sensibilities. While tastefully written, he is refreshingly honest, open, and vulnerable, which makes him someone the reader can relate to.

I don't usually use the word "anointed" about anything these days, but I believe it applies to this book. I believe the Lord will use it to reach many for salvation in Jesus Christ, and to give all believers renewed hope and looking forward to living a life totally dedicated to Him and anxiously awaiting His soon return.

Just when you thought you knew what a "crack head" would talk, walk and look like...you were wrong. Frank Turner was a high-profile news anchor on ABC Detroit but had real "issues." Like a lot of us, he had ghosts from the past that haunted him - but he let those ghosts torture him - almost to the point of destruction! Thank God for HIS GRACE. This book shows you the amazing grace of God and how much His love for us is not beyond anyone's reach. Great, fast read. Better than chocolate!

I will start by saying that the further I got into this book, my opinions changed a bit towards the positive. I'm the kind of person who may only read 10-20 pages at a time, or at the most, 50-60 over a lunch break. If a book doesn't grab me within the first few sessions of reading, then it will likely end up being forgotten about and never finished. This book almost ended up there. Fortunately, I had a serious interest in the topic, so I persisted.

All of the information in this book will likely not apply to anyone, but everyone can find something in this book that applies to them. The topics run the gamut, from high school to college to single adult life to married life and even delves into addictions and lustful temptations. In case you haven't figured it out yet, this book is about sex from a "Christian perspective". I put that in quotes because there are so many books out there that claim this. I have a problem with a lot of these books. They all claim to be Biblically based, yet they sometimes head in opposite directions. This book is honest and does not claim to be the ultimate truth. It claims to be the opinion of one man and others that he has talked to, but he leaves the details to you.

Many other reviewers have praised the humor of the book. I appreciated the humor as well, but only to a certain point. When I started seeing jokes and humorous references more than once per page, it became almost tiring and hard to follow. Thankfully, if you stick it out, the content starts to shine through all of the humor.

As a whole, I would recommend the book. Although not all sections will apply to you, I bet it will help you understand others who struggle with those issues. It's never a bad thing to learn more about other people. The book is full of a lot of great information, advice and even a bit of hope for those who struggle. Matthew Paul Turner keeps the focus where it should be, on living your life as God intended you to. After all, don't you think that God might know what He's doing?

An absolutely great read for all ages. This book is brutally honest and descriptive, which, at times, make the reader a bit uncomfortable, but it's the honesty that makes this book great. Mr. Turner does a great job of presenting really sensitive material in a light hearted yet serious spiritual manner. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in 1) learning more about how we can discuss sex as a Christian, 2) how to live a healthy sexual lifestyle as a Christian, 3) how to improve one's married sex life through the ideas and principles God has laid out for us. I have started to recommend this to my college friends because it has changed the way I have viewed married sex. I used to think it was a bad thing and the author has used the Bible as a guideline to really show the reader that God created this wonderful experience for our enjoyment and that we shouldn't be afraid to embrace it (in the correct way, of course). Mr. Turner's witty humor, vivid descriptions, and overall understanding of what the Bible has to say about sex, makes this book a must have for anyone who wants to grow and learn more about the topic of sex.

I grew up in the "sex is only good in the context of marriage so we aren't going to talk about it --EVER-- until you're married, and while you're at it, go ahead and kiss dating goodbye" Christian theology of thought. Matthew used both humor and truth to weasel his way into my mind and heart and changed me forever. I was better prepared for marriage, a healthy sex life, and healthy sex conversations because of this book. I wouldn't pass this one along to your junior high cousin or anything, but mature Christians ready to take a long and honest look at something truly beautiful and God-created (I mean sex here, not Matthew's book :) should read this at least twice.

The newest book from Matthew Paul Turner presents his unique perspective on Christian sexuality. What you didnt learn from your parents about sex: A guide to a touchy subject arms you with biblical sources, contributors options and as always Matthews own unique blend of tongue in cheek brutal honestly. His easy going conversation style lays out various aspects of sexuality from masturbation to premarital sex, and of course tackles the question how far is too far, in a relaxed but direct manner. Jonathan Edwards would be furious. Though most of this book is appropriate for everyone, some of it focuses on married couples, and other parts you feel the overwhelming need to pull your bible out and see if some of his side bar biblical quotes are really in scripture. All in all, I highly recommend reading this book, its about time someone took a fresh approach to sexuality in the Christian community

Will Turner is in his early twenties and desperate to fly in Chris Davey's The Aviator's Apprentice. The century is young and aviation is just beginning. What a fantastic book! Incredibly real characters, action, history filled pages! I loved every page! Mr. Davey created a group of characters that I honestly haven't seen in too long. His book is filled with likable people (and of course some that aren't likable) that made the world take flight while I read it! Does that make sense? I mean to say that reading his book made the world around seem better-ya know? Great, happy, AND well developed characters. I got what I always want out of this book. I got a week of pure pleasure being lost in it's pages! That's all I ask of fiction- take me away to a better place! Let me see things and experience things I 've never felt before. Davey does this perfectly with this, and his second book. If you're not interested in aviation, don't worry. This is still a great story worth reading. If you do love the history of aviation like I, then be prepared for some great facts and insight. Bravo Davey! Keep the books coming!

Not knowing exactly what to expect and not knowing if this would be a dry and boring read,we are very happy to say it is an interesting and informative read. The background knowledge and interest that the writer has shown is a very good part of the book. He is a very interesting writer and the information in his book is well presented and keeps the readers interest by his writing style. We were amazed at how many badges there are and what a wide variety of reasons for them.
I would say this book is great for any one interested in the fire department, and it's history, of New York.

I believe Gary Urbanowicz in his new book Badges of the Bravest set out to do one thing and accomplished another. Ostensibly the story of insignia, Gary succeeds in sharing what the insignia stands for: bravery, pride, the diversity of the people and institutions that all fire departments protect. Like a Freudian slip, where you say one thing but mean your mother, Gary's book
is more about 'the bravest' than 'the badges.' The respect and admiration and fascination with firefighters shows through. A job well done.

If you have the slightest interest in the history of the FDNY, this is the book for you. Yes, there are other good books on the FDNY, but the niche occupied by this book (i.e, badges) is unique. But, it would be a mistake to think the book deals only with badges. Rather, the book uses FDNY badges as the focal point for describing the development of the FDNY as we know it today. The writing is clear, details abound, and the photos are wonderful. In real life, I - like the author of this book - am a health care professional. However, I am a fire buff (originally from Brooklyn, NY), a member of our local Citizens Fire Academy, and have been collecting a variety of fire department memorabilia, including FDNY badges, for some time. For the first time, I have a reference on my shelf that affords me the ability to more vividly appreciate the history, art, lore and romance of fire department antiques.

A Straight Forward Text Book

It's a textbook. That being said, it is filled with extra material, like case examples, a CD-ROM, etc. I didn't look at any of that because my business law class went at such a slow pace we only looked at about 10 of the chapters. If you are buying this for a class, you should come away with a lot of good information from this book without feeling it is too much of a boring chore to read through.

Excellent text for the Instructor; for the Student

This is an excellent text at various levels of interest, desire, talent and time. The text is arranged that given the time, the Instructor can dig deeper and deeper into thorny topics. Additionally, curious students can rely on numerous web sources for enhanced views and greater depth.

Further, there are additional sources for the Instructor available through test banks and outlines. This is my favorite text to teach from. It is neither dry with enough cases to stir the imagination of the younger students nor MTV'd and contains sufficient current cases to give older students and retired students pause to consider. 5 stars. This is an excellent text. It incorporates the law, as well as
legal research methodologies. For instance, a standard chapter
contains an outline, common law sources, constitutional,
statutory and administrative laws/rule-making. The work cites
computerized legal research in WESTLAW and LEXIS. Relevant
international legal citations are listed. The applicable
United States Code is cited by Title and specific paragraph.
In some cases, individual state legal codes are cited. There
are exhaustic sets of historical and statutory notes, cross
references and federal practice notes. Each chapter has a
comprehensive case study with a brief synopsis, cited case
and final disposition. There are teaching suggestions at the
end of the instructor's manual together with discussion
questions, research assignments and an explanation of footnotes.
In addition, there is an exhaustive section on essay question
answers.

Here is a model answer:
Stare decisis is a doctrine that prescribes following earlier
judicial decisions in deciding a current case if the facts and
questions are similar. Courts attempt to be consistent with their
own prior decisions and with the decisions of courts superior
to them. Stare decisis is important because part of the function
of law is to maintain stability. If the application of the law
was unpredictable, there would be no consistent rules to follow
and no stability.

The volume has detailed coverage of the following areas:
o Business Ethics o Int'l Business Law
o Employee Rights o Employment law
o Occupational safety o Accounting and the law
o Securities o Mergers and acquisitions
o Insurance o Real Estate
o Financial institutions o Unfair competition
o Advertising o Environmental law
o Health Care o Sports and entertainment
o Hospitality management o Communications
o Government contracts o Legal representation of business

There are significant software support systems; namely,
o Legal Clerk Research Software System
o Computerized Instructor's Manual
o Computerized Questions/Answers
o Case problems on diskette
o CD
o Lecture Builder Software
o Westest
o A Classroom Management System
o WESTrain
o Transparency Masters
o Sample Moot Court and much much more

This text is an excellent purchase for collegiate law students.

I am using this textbook in several of my classes, and let me just say- it has everything I could have hoped for. The chapters are laid out well, many cases are cited, and the student is given actual cases to figure out, with the citations given at the end so he can find the actual outcome. I've found this to be among the best textbooks. It is so good, in fact that I've reccomended it to several of my friends who are going into business for themselves. This covers nearly everything they'll need to know regarding contracts, secured transactions, warranties, etc.
Love the law!

This is an absolutely delightful book. It makes the perfect gift for anyone interested in Chinese affairs providing remarkable insight. I was devastated to read the irresponsible inaccuracies in China Wakes by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl Wudunn. Theirs was a China written in the tradition of Ugly Americans who stay at the Palace Hotel for one week complaining about the lack of ice for their Coke. I vowed that I would never ever read another book on China written by American journalists. Luckily, I was given Mike Chinoy's book by a friend. Absolutely brilliant!

This is one of the better books on China that I've read. I lived in Beijing for two years, and feel that, unlike Kristoff and Dunn in China Wakes, Mike Chinoy really understands China and what makes this most mysterious country tick. And like Jan Wong in Red China Blues, he goes through a transition of being gung-ho on Maoism to seeing the reality of the situation in China. This is one of the things that makes both books so believable. As I am a journalist, I also can appreciate the red tape he went through to get the story out. Chinoy also does an excellent job of describing the Tian'anmen massacre -- one of the better descriptions I've read. I really recommend this book. It's excellent!

I have always imagined that foreign correspondents live more exciting lives than the rest of us, so I read Mike Chinoy's "China Live" to see a glimpse of the truth. Upon reading "China Live," I was pleased with to obtain an inspiring and balanced account of the career path of CNN's first Beijing Bureau Chief. As a journalist, Chinoy was crafty, dedicated, and intrepid. As trite as it may sound, his book leaves you with the feeling that you can go on to achieve great things and leave a significant and lasting mark upon the world. It is especially suitable for sinophiles and aspiring journalists, but also recommended for anyone who enjoys to read.

Mike Chinoy has done an excellent job of bringing to life a country that many people think they know so much about but in reality know so lillte about. China is a fascinating country. I spent six weeks there two years ago at a central bank conference so I studied the country in great detail. After my return I read Mike Chinoy's book and I feel it is a balanced account of the Middle Kingdom. Chinoy tells of his fascination with the country in the early days of U.S.-Sino relations. He details the changes that take place after the death of Mao Zadong and the economic changes through he leadership of Deng Xiopang. But his best reporting is the riveting account of June 4, 1989. This was Tiananmen Square and the brutal assault of the peaceful demonstrators. Chinoy was in the thick of the assault and he details his experiences not only on the night but also the next few days. All Chinese should read this book. Many Chinese think that the press has embellished what happened that night and that the government needed to restore order. Reading Chinoy's book may lead them to re-assess their governemnt's brutal policies. As a self-appointed Sinologist and one that has read many many articles and books on " Zhong guo" I would highly recommend this book. And some day I might get the opportunity to sit and talk with Mike Chinoy about his experiences in China.

Excellent read! Insightful look at major historical events.

I could not put this book down. Chinoy (a cousin of mine, but that bears no influence in my review) invites you into the past where you find yourself in the midst of major historical events. His writing is filled with sincere emotion, high-spirited wit and a true sense of the human struggle to be free from opression. The book also opens the door to the fast-paced and unpredictable life of the foreign correspondent and how that role in our society has changed and is changing. A truly insightful book that should make its way into high school history classes -- I would have actually stayed awake in class if we had had material like this.
