I ordered this book because my Great Uncle Julius Yackie died at the Rangoon Prison in Burma after his glider's tow rope broke
and they crashed. It means a lot to our family to have John Boyd's account of what it was like for Julius (Duley) to be in
that prison. I would love to add to this review once I finish reading the book but I can tell you that it is a sobering read.
There are so many well known battles from World War II, but the Burma campaign seems to have been forgotten.

A Wonderful Look Back

The book is a fascinating look back at life in the early 1900's
in 4 counties of the northern Cumberland Plateau area of Tennessee.
There is a wealth of old photographs--at a guess, about 250 or more
in the book's 120 oversize glossy pages--maps, and descriptions in
the book. The emphasis is primarily on the coal camps such as Wilder
in Fentress County, with a lot of detail about the railroads that
served the coal mining communities, and not as much about the logging.
The book is divided into histories of some of the towns in each county
(the book calls them "cities", which is a very generous term). Then
you'll find histories of the timber and lumber companies, and the coal
companies. There's a nice chapter on the people--biographies of some
of the residents (mostly coal miners in this book). There are brief
chapters on the Wilder and Zenith strikes (1919 to 1937 or so) and
some excerpts from the 1930s from Jamestown and Livingston papers. All
chock-full of photographs of the people and places--including a couple
of photos of hangings from the late 1800's: it would appear that the
local law enforcement preferred using trees to building gallows.
The book is a nice companion piece to Ghost Railroads of Tennessee,
although the emphasis is on a much smaller part of the state. On a
personal note, I'm a caver, and most of the areas in the book are familiar
to me. Of particular interest is the town of Wilder, close to the gorge
of the East Fork of the Obey River. The population peaked at about 2500
in 1925 or so, with large hotels and a thriving coal business. What is
left has a population of about 60--the hotels, the mines, the railroad,
etc, are all long since gone and grown over--looking at the old photos
is a real treat! A highly recommended book.

I really wanted to get a better 'feel'of what my father, Herb Fish, went through during WWII. He was a Tank Gunner in Co.
"B", "Tiger Division" from 1942-46 in the ETO, 3rd and 10th AD. It is hard to put such terror in words and describe them.
You have to be there to really know. This book is an excellent overview, but nothing describes what our men in battle really
went through. Thanks to all the men in battle who gave us all!! I applaud and Honor all of you.

This book focuses primarily on the Battles of Barnett and Tewkesbury,2 decisive battles of the War of the Roses in the latter
part of this conflict. It describes the weapons, tactics, and mechanics of the battles, without going into a long and complex
history in the Wars of the Roses.I particularly found it interesting because of the mention of the use of field artillery
that fired stone balls and possibly a type of cannister shot.By this time warfare was evolving and the heraldry charging knight
and his armored steed were rapidly being replaced.I was wondering if artillery,of which Edward IV was superior in,may have
played the decisive role at Tewkesbury and Barnet. The author mentions Somersets' ill-advised charge into Edward's line. Was
Somerset "unnerved" by Edward's artillery and frustrated to the point of making a wreckless advance to escape the bombardment.Field
Artillery was a relatively new armed wing and it would constantly require new tactics and strategies to deal with it.Since
both opposing were close in size, about 6,000 apiece and both had a legitimate title to the English throne a few extra cannon
could have been the difference. There is excellent illustrations and really superb, detailed maps of tactics and manuevers.A
flashback in time to a period when England was a pawn of continental politics, with fresh armies organized and equipped in
west-europe willing to risk a crack at the English throne.Alot of books written about the Wars of the Roses, deal with what
population elements comprised the armies during this period and describe their equipment. From other reads a surprising percentage
of both armies were mercenaries and the rest pretty much "retained" soldiery in the pay and alliance of their lord. These books
also try to discern how badly these moving armies disrupted the English economy of the period:some books say that despite
it all the carnage of these wars was relatively small and contained, and business went on as usual even during the worst of
the conflict.Other books say that the Wars of Roses effected gravely the economy and severely downgraded the living standards
of the period. This book sticks primarily to the battle itself and has more detail in regard to this.

This latest edition of Texas Law in Layman's Language breaks through the cumbersome technical jargon surrounding our laws
and makes them easy to understand. Updated to include the latest changes in the law, this handy reference clearly explains
current legislation.
The book is divided into two sections--criminal law and civil law. The civil law section, which has been expanded to cover more family-related matters, addresses marriage/divorce issues, wills and estates, property laws, and damage suits and complaints. The criminal law section, including the latest changes to the state penal code, describes punishable offenses and their penalties, how criminal law is administered, and the procedures followed when a person is accused of a crime and must go to court.

A Very Honorable Tribute to the Great Men of "Spearhead" An outstanding publication summarizing much of what was published
in the 1945 3rd Armored Division, "Spearhead in the West." See maps, personal photos from France, the Bulge, Cologne, all
the way up to the present day memorials in Belgium. The 3rd Armored's role in Desert Storm is also summarized at the end
of the book. I especially admire the "then and now" photos along with stories from WWII veterans who served proudly. This
book salutes my grandfather and all of the brave men of the 3rd who helped bring down Nazi Germany. GREAT PUBLICATION!!

In a media world where people like Rupert Murdock are put on a boat for a photo op, people like Ted Turner actually support the crew and stay onboard for the whole race, all 31,000 miles of it.
Regardless of money my friends, that separates the men from the boys.
