"The Springs of Creve Coeur" is the fifth book of verse by Minnesota poet, novelist and free-lance writer Martie Marshall. Distinctive, distinguished, and documenting Marshall as a master wordsmith, these are poems that use words the way a skilled artist uses the colors of his pallette, or a musician the notes of his music, to convey images to the mind's eye of the viewer. 'The Great Ones': The great ones were stubborn./Hearts breaking, they turned away/when the iron doors of the critics/swung shut in their faces; then/walked back to their easels/or writing desks or claviers/and allowed the tears/before they rescued their/fiery visions of truth/which art only is-/or it is not. The sad/asylums welcomed the prostrate ones/until they could speak again./And they hauled reluctant Time/into their green souls' kingdom.

This book is fabulous for young children interested in thier zodiac sign. It has great colorful pictures, that will fansinate young children. Otherwise I would not buy this book. It is not very detailed, but is great for kids. I would say not to buy it if over 8. You should get a more complicated one.

Contained within this book is everything you could ever want to know about any country in the world. For each state it covers geography (size, location, etc), history, current politics, imports/exports, transportation, the number of movie theaters, the number of seats in the theatres, and a whole lot more. Truly an amazing reference for anyone interested in other countries; or your own for that matter.

What a resource!

I learned about "The Statesman's Yearbook" while reading Gary Hoover's "Hoover's Vision." He listed it as one of the books that no true business person should be without.

I couldn't agree more. It's a tremendous resource. Just the other day, I needed to know some facts about the Uruguayan economy for a proposal I was writing. It's all here: economic policy and performance; banking and finance; energy and natural resources; key historical events; territory and population; demographics; etc., etc. etc.

Suppose you had a question regarding civil aviation in Uruguay. The Statesman's Guide tells you:

"There is an international airport at Montevideo (Carrasco). The national carrier is Pluna...There are 60 airports (1996), 45 paved with runways, and 15 with unpaved runways. In 1998 Montevideo handled 1,470,000 passengers (1,198,000 on international flights) and 25,500 tons of freight."

That's the level of detail you get on any question of national importance...for *any* nation in the world. It's an amazing resource, notable for both its breadth and depth. In short, well worth your money.

Status

Review Date: 2006-09-24
Although status is an essential concept in classical sociology and a crucial feature of social structure, it has been much criticized in contemporary social theory and to some extent replaced by a Marxist concept of economic class. In this book, Bryan Turner argues that social stratification has three major components: political-legal rights (status as entitlement), cultural distinction (status as life-style) and economic class. The relationships between these elements are historically contingent and determined by social struggles over resources. He examines the historical variations between these dimensions in slavery, feudalism and capitalism, and argues that in contemporary society the decline of economic class and the struggle between status groups over welfare resources have given life to a new form of political life: status bloc politics under the administration of the state. His analysis of status concludes with an examination of the effects of mass consumption on cultural distinction and a consideration of the implications of cultural postmodernism for the traditional struggle between high and low culture. His main thesis is that economic, political and cultural inequalities can only be understood from a conflict-sociology perspective.

I love these poems -clear images, insights, humor, and tears

Review Date: 1998-03-21
This collection of Turner's poems shows his exceptional ability to create in all forms, traditional and free verse. He takes the eveyday, the mundane, the familiar and allows us to subtly go along on this journey with him, finding humor, insight, sometimes pain. By directly allowing me to see into his own core - bumbling "On The Burlington" , experiencing feelings "For Mother", considering the Japanese approach to kissing "Kiss o Kudasai" - he gently helps me to look at myself, at others and at the world. And it is a look I like, curious, intelligent, hopeful, spiritual, conveyed in delightful images that shine through even the saddest of content. My favorites? Many! Be sure to read "Your Casket Gleamed Like an Upright Piano" and "The Secret." Better yet, read them all!

History of the America's Cup
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-25
This book tells the history of the America's Cup sailing race. The beautiful paintings by Tim Thompson capture a key moment for each race. And each race is described in detail by Ranulf Raynor, including boat specifics -- length, beam, sail area, designer, owner, and skipper. There is even a section describing the race courses and locations.

The races painted and described include every America's Cup race from 1851 - 2000, listed below.
1851 America defeats the British Fleet
1870 Magic defeats Cambria
1871 Columbia and Sappho defeat Livonia
1876 Madeleine defeats Countess of Dufferin
1881 Mischief defeats Atalanta
1885 Puritan defeats Genesta
1886 Mayflower defeats Galatea
1887 Volunteer defeats Thistle
1893 Vigilant defeats Valkyrie II
1895 Defender defeats Valkyrie III
1899 Columbia defeats Shamrock
1901 Columbia defeats Shamrock II
1903 Reliance defeats Shamrock III
1920 Resolute defeats Shamrock IV
1930 Enterprise defeats Shamrock V
1934 Rainbow defeats Endeavor
1937 Ranger defeats Endeavor II
1958 Columbia defeats Sceptre
1962 Weatherly defeats Gretel
1964 Constellation defeats Sovereign
1967 Intrepid defeats Dame Pattie
1970 Intrepid defeats Gretel II
1974 Courageous defeats Southern Cross
1977 Courageous defeats Australia
1980 Freedom defeats Australia
1983 Australia II defeats Liberty
1987 Stars & Stripes defeats Kookaburra III
1988 Stars & Stripes defeats New Zealand
1992 America defeats Il Moro Di Venezia
1995 Black Magic defeats Young America
2000 Black Magic defeats Luna Rossa

I loved the character sketches of some of the most well-known contenders and participants, from old boat designer Captain Nat Hereshoff himself, to English Sir Thomas Lipton who was one of the most determined challengers with his Shamrock boats and well-loved by even the American competitors.

For anyone who loves sailing and follow the history of the America's Cup, this book is for you.
