This may be my favorite book. It is a collection of essays by noted and respected individuals, such as Tristan d'Estree Sterk, in the many subfields of responsive architecture.
Although you won't get an extremely in-depth view of any of the various paths architects and others are taking, the reader will learn about the wide range of topics one can explore within the field. Topics range from tensegrity in man-made materials to tensegrity and extreme flexibility in plants, from art installations to the future of architecture. There is a wealth of information neatly packed into the wonderfully written short articles.
I lent this to a friend about a month ago and my greatest fear is that she will never return it. I can see myself using it as a reference and pleasure reading for years to come.

This book will do exactly what they said wasn't possible by illustrating how video and sound can be integrated into your Flash presentations, placing you at the extreme edge of creative web design. The application of such tools as AfterEffects, QuickTime, SoundForge and Wildform test the boundaries of Flash and suggest ways to take sound and video beyond Flash and into the realms of Shockwave.
Showing you how to break your site down and incorporate video and sound, the techniques covered in this book capitalise on the capabilities of Flash whilst tackling its limitations head-on. It will then look at how to take web ideo and sound a step further with Shockwave presentations.

Good book for understanding background for cultural diversity

This is a well-written book, which provides a solid approach to dealing with cross-cultural issues with many excellent examples and statistics. The central purpose of this work is to dispel the idea that there is one correct management model. In addition to initiating the reader into the world of cultural diversity as seen in a business setting, the authors also analyse concrete steps for reconciling cultural dilemmas.
Like many other books in this genre, this book equates culture with the boundaries of the nation states and all countries are treated as monolithic cultures. This may lead readers to assume that once I learn about American of British behaviour, I can predict how any American or Brit would act in a certain situation.
Recommended for managers in multicultural organizations, especially those involved in the process of internationalisation. Students of cross cultural studies and HR-practitioners would also find this book useful.

I am a 3rd grader in Chicago and my teacher read us this book about 3 kids and two adults. Their names are Luther, Carrie, Dilly, Mama, and Papa. It was in the time of slavery. Dilly's mother was sold to a mean white man, where Luther and Carrie's mother lived too. Carrie's father was sold to another white man with lots of horses, but the father escaped. They made a daring escape. Running from dogs and people, and sliding across the great Mississippi, by foot and by horse, they reached many stops on the Underground Railroad, including places in Chicago and around Chicago that I know about. Along the way, they get separated from each other. A lost aunt, a future uncle, and an old-time taxi driver are part of the puzzle that is finished by the end of the book. I'll let you find out the rest. This is probably the best book I've read about slavery. This story changed my life because I will never tease someone that has a different color skin from me.

Lynn Turner is a native of the countryside of Nova Scotia and the North Atlantic. Canada's severe winters and beautiful coast side summers make for vivid imaginations in the writing community, and Ms. Turner is no exception.
Keely Dunwich returns in this Gottingen mystery. She has established herself in her law practice, has a boyfriend, and is generally enjoying life until the son of a friend disappears and a mysterious ship washes up on the coast. The ship turns out to be a drug runner, and Zenon's disappearance could be connected. In the meantime, two of Keely's deceased grandmother's Wiccan coven show up to perform the rites of Halloween. Keely still hasn't come to grips with her heritage, and she is slow to warm up to the two delightful Wiccas. The two fun loving elders come in handy when the situation with Zenon calls for desperate measures:
"Doreen, looking pleased with herself, took a bite of dinner.
'Blowroot,' Sissy said clearly.
Keely frowned at her. 'Blowroot?'
'Sandra had a supply. We already checked.'
'I don't think I want to know what you're talking about.' She turned
back to the sink to heat the teapot.
'Don't worry, dear. She left antivenin too.'
'How thoughtful,' Keely mumbled sarcastically."
Salvaged is an entertaining and satisfying sequel to Last Resort, Lynn Turner's first mystery. Keely's character is developed as she assimilates into the life of the town of Gottingen. Her boyfriend, Jay, is on hand to share in her adventures, and their relationship is still growing. Her friend Betty, who runs the local eatery, is a carefully wrought character whose friendship with Keely suffers from the strain of her son's kidnapping. Keely is a determined and resourceful heroine, who is fun to follow and root for. The reader quickly gets caught up in this mystery/thriller, and Turner doesn't disappoint. Salvaged is a top-notch tale with lots of twists and turns, and Turner keeps all of her quirky characters managed for the reader's enjoyment. A great read!

The subject is nature. Not big vistas for the most part, more like something you might call "medium intimate"--lots of trees and bushes, plus a few rocks, one waterfall, one photo devoted just to a cloud, etc.
Some of the photos are unbelievably crisp, for example two of golden aspens against the sky. Several have stark contrasts, for example a tree with green bark against the orange leaves of a tree behind it. The effect is electric. Many of the photos have big, bold colors, yet Burkett doesn't seem often to resort to sunsets to tint his pictures. He uses no filters and does no cropping.
This is an expensive book and it rarely shows up at a discount. I don't pay full price for books normally but I laid my money down for this one. It is the gem of my collection, and if I couldn't get another one, I wouldn't part with it for $1000. Go to Mr. Burkett's website and check out the samples. They should convince you better than I can.
If you need to see that real beauty is possible in this world, then this is the book for you.
