Turner's "Frontier Thesis" Unfiltered

Review Date: 2006-08-03
This is a very useful collection of ten essays by University of Wisconsin/Harvard University historian Frederick Jackson Turner written through out his career. Edited and introduced by John Mack Faragher, this book is a very fine entrée point to the thought of Turner. The first of the essays published here is Turner's seminal work, "The Significance of the Frontier in American History," an essay that defined a whole field of research. Read at the 1893 annual meeting of the American Historical Association in Chicago, this paper has exerted an enormously powerful force on the historiography of the United States, in no small measure because of its powerful statement of American exceptionalism. Turner took as his cue an observation in the 1890 U.S. census that the American frontier had for the first time closed. He noted, "Up to our own day American history has been in a large degree the history of the colonization of the Great West. The existence of an area of free land, its continuous recession, and the advance of American settlement westward explain American development."
Turner insisted that the frontier made Americans American, gave the nation its democratic character, and ensured the virtues of self-reliance, community, egalitarianism, and the promise of justice. He noted that cheap or even free land provided a "safety valve" that protected the nation against uprisings of the poverty-stricken and malcontented. The frontier also produced a people with "coarseness and strength...acuteness and inquisitiveness, that practical and inventive turn of mind...[full of] restless and nervous energy...that buoyancy and exuberance which comes with freedom." It gave the people of the United States, in essence, virtually every positive quality they have ever possessed.
Despite criticisms, through at least the 1950s vision of the frontier reigned supreme as an underlying definer of American character. It conjured up an image of self-reliant Americans moving westward in sweeping waves of discovery, exploration, conquest, and settlement of an "untamed wilderness." And in the process of movement, the Europeans who settled North America became an indigenous American people. In Turner's characterization, the frontier concept has always carried with it the ideals of optimism, democracy, and meritocracy. It also summoned in the popular mind a wide range of vivid and memorable tales of heroism, each a morally justified step toward the modern democratic state. The popular conception of "westering" and the settlement of the American continent by Europeans has been a powerful metaphor for the uniqueness of America in the twentieth century.
As explained in Faragher's introduction, in the latter half of the twentieth century historians increasingly questioned Turner's frontier ideal, arguing that it reduced the complexity of events to a relatively static morality play, avoided matters that challenged or contradicted the myth, viewed Americans moving westward as inherently good and their opponents as evil, and ignored the cultural context of westward migration. They determined that Turner's "Frontier Thesis" was excessively ethnocentric, nationalistic, and somewhat jingoistic. His rhetoric excluded more than it covered, moreover, failing to do justice to diverse western people and events.
In addition to the title essay, this excellent collection of the essays of Frederick Jackson Turner includes such articles as "Social Forces in American History," "The Western and American Ideals," and "The Significance of Sections in American History."
This is an indispensable source for the thinking of Frederick Jackson Turner and his influence on thinking about the history of the American West.

Christopher Burkett claims that he captures the divine light that shines through nature "unspoiled" by man. Even though I am an atheist, I am inclined to believe him. This book contains 65 full-page photos on great paper with dazzling color--a large palette and a big range of brightness.
The subject is nature. Not big vistas for the most part, more like something you might call "medium intimate"--lots of trees and bushes, plus a few rocks, one waterfall, one photo devoted just to a cloud, etc.
Some of the photos are unbelievably crisp, for example two of golden aspens against the sky. Several have stark contrasts, for example a tree with green bark against the orange leaves of a tree behind it. The effect is electric. Many of the photos have big, bold colors, yet Burkett doesn't seem often to resort to sunsets to tint his pictures. He uses no filters and does no cropping.
This is an expensive book and it rarely shows up at a discount. I don't pay full price for books normally but I laid my money down for this one. It is the gem of my collection, and if I couldn't get another one, I wouldn't part with it for $1000. Go to Mr. Burkett's website and check out the samples. They should convince you better than I can.
If you need to see that real beauty is possible in this world, then this is the book for you.

This may be my favorite book. It is a collection of essays by noted and respected individuals, such as Tristan d'Estree Sterk, in the many subfields of responsive architecture.
Although you won't get an extremely in-depth view of any of the various paths architects and others are taking, the reader will learn about the wide range of topics one can explore within the field. Topics range from tensegrity in man-made materials to tensegrity and extreme flexibility in plants, from art installations to the future of architecture. There is a wealth of information neatly packed into the wonderfully written short articles.
I lent this to a friend about a month ago and my greatest fear is that she will never return it. I can see myself using it as a reference and pleasure reading for years to come.

This book will do exactly what they said wasn't possible by illustrating how video and sound can be integrated into your Flash presentations, placing you at the extreme edge of creative web design. The application of such tools as AfterEffects, QuickTime, SoundForge and Wildform test the boundaries of Flash and suggest ways to take sound and video beyond Flash and into the realms of Shockwave.
Showing you how to break your site down and incorporate video and sound, the techniques covered in this book capitalise on the capabilities of Flash whilst tackling its limitations head-on. It will then look at how to take web ideo and sound a step further with Shockwave presentations.

Good book for understanding background for cultural diversity

This is a well-written book, which provides a solid approach to dealing with cross-cultural issues with many excellent examples and statistics. The central purpose of this work is to dispel the idea that there is one correct management model. In addition to initiating the reader into the world of cultural diversity as seen in a business setting, the authors also analyse concrete steps for reconciling cultural dilemmas.
Like many other books in this genre, this book equates culture with the boundaries of the nation states and all countries are treated as monolithic cultures. This may lead readers to assume that once I learn about American of British behaviour, I can predict how any American or Brit would act in a certain situation.
Recommended for managers in multicultural organizations, especially those involved in the process of internationalisation. Students of cross cultural studies and HR-practitioners would also find this book useful.

in the late '60's Charles Hampden-Turner attended the school of Business at Harvard. He became disillusioned by the curriculum believing it's aim was to produce hoop-jumpers and vaccuous, unimaginative, "Yes Men."
In his book he attacks the history of motivational research responcible for misguiding our highest schools and undermining theories of management in the profession of leadership and management to this day.
He outlines 8 personal traits that when highly developed produce the "Radical Man".
He contrasts the usefullness of cooperation as opposed to competition in organizational endeavor.
Finally, he goes into theories of positive feedback, like in an electrical circuit, in the context of group endeavor. Making the point that people with the eight critical character traits highly developed working cooperatively make the most cabaple, fullfilling and effective task masters.
The book his organized and written so that useful revelations are accessible at any point you begin reading. This is another book to keep on the shelf close at hand.
