Book One of Tiffany Turner's Crystal Keeper Chronicles series, "The Lost Secret of Fairies" follows elementary school student Wanda as she discovers that the world of fairies is real and that somehow she has become the Crystal Keeper, the human caretaker of the world of fairies. They grow ill from the pollution that is so plentiful in the human world and now Wanda must find the cure, while answering the assorted questions that have struck her as she falls into this predicament. "The Lost Secret of Fairies" is highly recommended for children's book shelves as the perfect bridge from picturebooks to young adult novels. Children 7-11 will love it.

I can be forgiven for my enthusiasm over the publication of The Lovable One-Niner. I have long since been a fan of this remarkable little airplane. Anything that passed as a reference source for the history of this airplane would have been most welcome. What delighted me, however, was the meticulous nature of the contents. A writer could not attain this level of detail unless he loved his subject. Clearly Mr. Thompson did. With equal parts of this book given to both the technical and personal history of this airplane, I have been able to share it with non-pilot friends who enjoyed it from a purely historical perspective. I am very pleased with the results and have recommended it freely.

After reading "Luxury Leisure for Less", I found myself getting excited about all the low-cost activities I would have on my kitchen calendar in a couple of months. I think this book has timeless information that can be used by anyone who does not want to spend a lot of money to have fun. The information provided in this book could be used in the city or in the country--it is universal information. I even plan to use some of the basics leisure for less tips during my next vacation to Paris.

A wonderful resource with every speech and report MacArthur ever gave

When I was a child everyone knew who General Douglas MacArthur was. One of only five men to ever achieve the rank of General of the Army, when he died it was big headlines in all the papers and dominated the newscasts. He was a noted and decorated officer in the U. S. Army before and during the first world war, the commander in the Pacific Theater during World War II, famously returning to the Philippines, signed the accepted the surrender of Japan ending that war, and was brought out of retirement to lead the effort in the Korean War. The daring assault on North Korea through Inchon was his. However, his dispute with Truman about what to do after the Chinese crossed the Yalu River in huge numbers led to his being removed by that President.
At the time Truman caught the worst of the public relations and MacArthur, but since then Truman's stock has risen greatly, and the kind of Constitutionalism and Liberty espoused by MacArthur is now considered old-fashioned and even obsolete by so many in our society that it is no wonder that he is as unknown to so many Americans. Or, if they do know his name, it is only about his return to the Philippines and getting fired by Truman.
This book is a labor of love by Edward T. Imparto, who served on MacArthur's staff and unabashedly views General MacArthur as one of the greatest men in all human history. I will leave you to your own judgments on that matter, but I really admire and enjoy this book.
The author has gathered together every major speech and report (a specialized kind of speech to one's superiors) that MacArthur ever gave (and could be found). From a 1908 lecture he gave to Students Mounted Service School through the January 26, 1964 address he gave to a delegation of cadets on his eighty-fourth birthday. He died weeks later on April 4, 1964.
The speeches included are the very famous addresses as well as less well known, but quite interesting pieces. Some of the entries are quite short and only a few lines long. Some go on for pages, such as his long keynote address at the Republican convention in 1952 after his half-hearted run for the Presidency. I found the talk quite fascinating, but it was not very well received at the time. I think I can guess that his attacks on the Truman administration over Korea might have seemed like beating a dead horse to some.
In any case, you can read all the biographies of MacArthur that you wish, but having this book will let you meet the man through his own words. It is important to know that he wrote his own speeches. These are his words rather than delivering a message crafted by others. As I read the emphasis he put on personal character, on liberty, the Constitution as the founders intended it, as he spoke against the rise of centralized government, increased spending, and the rise in political power in Washington, I find myself wishing his influence in the fifties had been greater. Would that we had people speaking as he did today. Of course, it would be hard for them to be taken seriously at any level of politics today. To our great loss.
An excellent resource and a fine book for all Americans to read and consider.

The highlights of MacArthur's powerful words
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.

The author of this book, Edward T. Imparato, Col USAF (ret), is a devoted admirer of General Douglas MacArthur. He views the general as one of the great men of history. Imparato has compiled all of MacArthur's speeches and reports in another book (General MacArthur Speeches and Reports 1908-1954) from the same publisher.
MacArthur wrote his own speeches and was a powerful writer. He had a flair for rhetoric and could create memorable phrases. In this book, Imparato presents portions of those speeches and reports that can stand alone and create memorable phrases and paragraphs. They also present a view of the core of MacArthur's beliefs and his view of the world.
While this book is necessarily less informative that the book that provides these quotes in the context of the complete speeches and reports, it is in some ways easier to read and the phrases become part of our memory more easily in their shorter and more focused format. To help with context, the author provides the speech and date from which the quote was taken so that those interested can go to the book of speeches (or other sources) and read them in their actual context and purpose.
This was obviously a labor of love and devotion and we can benefit from it. For me, it is very refreshing to read words from a national and world figure that still unashamedly talked about faith, morality, Christianity, virtue, and patriotism without qualification, apology, or hedge.

Invaluable analysis of postwar prime minister
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

Harold Macmillan looms large in the political history of postwar Britain. A maverick backbencher in the 1920s and 1930s, he rose rapidly in the Conservative governments of the 1950s, first as Minister of Housing, then as Foreign Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer before succeeding Anthony Eden as Prime Minister in the aftermath of the Suez crisis. As premier he governed a prosperous nation that faced a slow, inevitable decline as a great power, a decline that he managed with skill and dignity before resigning due to illness in 1963.
In this book, John Turner offers an examination of Macmillan's political career. Like the other volumes in the "Profiles in Power" series, this is not a biography of its subject; while Turner incorporates biographical details into his study, his focus is on Macmillan the politician and how he used the power of his various offices to address the problems facing Britain. For those looking more for an account of his life, Alistair Horne's two-volume official biography of Macmillan is the work to turn to instead.
Yet Turner goes beyond the parameters of the series to produce an invaluable analysis of Macmillan's career. Unlike Horne, who relied on Macmillan's personal papers, Turner uses the papers in the Public Record Office as the basis for his analysis. In them he discovers a successful prime minister, one skilled in crafting his public image and farsighted in his management of a nation adjusting to the realities of the postwar world. The result is a good supplement to Horne's work (which was published before most of the official papers were opened to the public) and required reading for anybody seeking to learn more about this important postwar political figure.
