At a remarkably young age, Ashlee A. Paxton-Turner has put together a wonderful book of poetry, that not only shows her outstanding command of the language, but her incredible vision and maturity. She puts her heart and soul in her poems. We hope there will be a lot more to come from this young woman.

I decided to review this book upon noticing the ratty condition of my copy as compared to the rest of my instructional library. It has value for all levels and so it's something I love returning to as I gain experience. There is nothing like a good intro or ending. They are classified by style which makes them especially valuable. Take example the old classic western "El Paso". By applying Turners intro's and endings in D you can have your very own, personalized styling that will sound unique and appropriate to lovers of the song.

My favorites however are the turnarounds. Most of us are introduced to guitar with individual chords, then progressions. Toss in a Turner turnaround and you have 80% of a song. Add and intro and ending and you've written a whole new one!

A History of Iowa

Review Date: 2004-06-26
I spent two years in Iowa, and I learned more from this little book, geared toward pre-teens, than I did when I was there. Maybe that says a lot about my powers of observation, but, in reality, is says a lot about the construction and writing of this book. "The Land Where the Tall Corn Grows" is given its full due here.

The "Portrait of America" series is a wonderful introduction for pre-teens to the 50 states and to the places and events that shaped the history of the United States. This "Iowa" installment is particularly good. The book is broken down into sections like "History", "Culture", "Economy" etc., and each section is thoughtfully written and edited. The "History" section is especially good and is very inclusive.

This book, as well as the entire "Portrait of America" series, will prove to be a valuable teaching tool to all primary school educators.

Perhaps for the first time, Dr. Colin Turner has shed light on the entire range of developments which led to the emergence of Shi'ite Iran, Khomeini, and the so-called "Islamic revolution." He not only clarifies the religious circumstances leading up to the present day, but enables us to understand why Shah Ismail, the founder of the Safavid dynasty, imported the dry, exoteric/externalist Shi'ite legal structure, even though he himself came to power on the basis of his esotericism/internalism.
Turner begins by drawing some theoretical distinctions between faith (iman), submission to God (islam), and submission to God's commands ("Islam"). He shows how the last can quite easily turn into rote repetition, obscuring the first two. He then turns to historical developments, the rise of the Safavids, and the gradual setting in of externalist Twelver Shi'ite law. A key distinction he draws is between the theocentrism of Islam versus the "imamocentrism" of 12er Shiism. The Imam is seen in Shiism as a kind of superman, embodying political authority, religious (legalistic) authority and mystical (spiritual) authority, all rolled into one. No matter how exalted, this over-emphasis on a figure other than God eclipses God Himself, thus leading to an unwitting idolatry. In the same way, focusing only on the external trappings of God's commands causes a similar eclipse.
I cannot do justice to the contents in so short a space. The book is densely but authoritatively argued. It seems Dr. Turner's dissertation was on the same subject, so he speaks from deep knowledge. One quibble: it is unfortunate that such a good book is so prohibitively priced, leaving it out of reach for all but a very few. If you can, in any way at all, read it!

Solve Your Library's Problems

Turner, director of the Santa Cruz City County Library System, provides a "commonsense guide to setting fair and appropriate behavior rules and training staff in how to implement them evenhandedly and with reasonably good humor." She deals with such issues as street people sleeping in the library, the mentally ill, substance abusers, sexual deviancy and harassment, general security, unaccompanied children, and more. (summary by South Texas Library System)
No library is free of these kinds of problems and there's no use trying to solve it single-handed. Get your hands on this book and the librarian no longer feels so alone which can be overwhelming at times. I wish I'd had this book when I first started my career as a library director.

This book is wonderful. Erin Turner does a great job in relaying California history from before it was California up to the 1980s. This book gives a historical account of important events in California's history that shaped California into what it is today. As a future teacher, I definitely recommend this book for classroom use and for anyone interested in California diverse history.

Turner at home in America

This is the catalogue for the current Turner exhibition held at the National Gallery in Washington and which will later come to the Met in NYC. Many of the paintings come from American and British museums, as well as from private collections and it is also an opportunity to view a significant part of Turner's watercolor output.

The book is divided into three parts following a chronological pattern after an introduction that studies Turner's "desire to rise to the top of the British art world" and his pursuit of fame. Part one deals with Turner's beginnings and building of his career, from 1790 to 1824 (the historical and economic contexts are not omitted). Part two studies the painter at the peak of his art (1818-1839)and part three dwells on the role of history in his art, the study of his masterpieces on the burning of the Houses of Parliament (1831), his late seascapes (1835-1846) and his mastery of light (1840-1851). An interesting conclusion studies Turner's relationship with America, which he never visited, but where his works were collected in depth very early.

All the illustrations are of a high quality, including some close-ups of details.

A valuable addition to the literature on the artist.
