Great Beginner's Manual!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

I took lessons many years ago with an instructor using the Berklee Method Book 1. Since then I have decided to start over at home and work my way through a number of manuals. This book is a great place to start!! The instruction is well paced, thorough, and the accompanying CDs are well produced. This book gives a solid foundation on technique, notation reading, tabulature, scales, transposition, chord construction and progressions, theory, fingerpicking, etc. The one thing missing for me was modal theory and improvising but I expect to see that in the book on playing Lead guitar. I really look forward to continuing on with the author's books on LEAD and BLUES.

If you are considering starting with Mel Bay or Hal Leonard as first time books, put this manual right up there with them!

After I get grounded again with this book and a few of the other Complete Learn to Play Books, I intend to work my way through the Berklee Books (1-3) again...they are well recommended as well!

Both the beginner book and the supplement do a great job. Unlike some of the other instruction books I own, the Progressive books actually start you at the beginning.

The included DVD forces you to learn to read music, a real plus in my opinion.

There may be other better beginner instruction methods out there, but I haven't found them yet.

Very inspring book about the Master of Motivation

No doubt, Glenn W. Turner was at the top of his game in the 1970's. He was the Tony Robbins of his time challenging people to become all they could be and Daring Them To Be Great. And judging by the testimonials in this 275 page book, his methods worked.

'GWT CHANGED THE WORLD FOR ME' offers hundreds of inspiring stories about people who were down and out. People who started with nothing or deeply in debt and achieved extraordinary success.

Interesting too was a coment from Jackie Baker on page 184. Baker was referred to Turners company from an employment agency. When she got her first check she noted that GWT signed it personally and underneath his signature added GOD BLESS YOU! I am now doing the same thing when I sign my checks.

While you will not find any great techniques in this book, you will be inspired. If these people could turn their lives around starting where they did, just think what you could do! I highly recommend this book.

Also recommend The Magic Of Thinking Big.

Colorful Reading

After I heard about this book I had to purchase it. The reading was very basic, and depending upon the childs age he or she could read it on his or her own. The pictures really catch your attention, and the lesson is simple yet practical. I recommend this book for new parents, parents whose children like disney type products, and for those who are interested in good healthy practices for your children.

My only recommendation would be for the book to be available on hardcover. Paperback has the tendency of getting water damage especially when following the instructions with this type of book.

Overall it is a keeper that is why I want it in hardback:-)

I know this guy's son and he's pretty cool, so this must be a pretty tight collection. Unlike Mariah Carey's greatest hits.

I love this book!! It has some of the coolest vintage photos of any Harley related book I have seen. Lots of cool ads too!! My favorite part is the Harley-Davidson comics, and the story about riding on the frozen river!! I highly recomend this book for any motorcycle enthusiast!

Bedside Book for Boomers....
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-25
If you, or a friend, are turning 40 - or 50 - this is the book to get for yourself, and/or to give as a gift. Along with the black crepe, the Over the Hill balloons and cards, this book is a baby boomer must have.

Most of the books I review are open for lending to family or friends - this book is an exception. It sits on my bedside table when it isn't accompanying me on trips that allow me to do a lot of reading. This chunky book offers me comfort and information as I move along in life.

In a Chapter called, "Making Changes That Last!" you'll find these words from the authors:

"One of the downers in midlife is recognizing that we are no longer protected by the invincibility of youth. One of its joys is recognizing that we now have the wisdom and experience we need to take control of our health and make choices that matter.

"The chapters that follow are filled with lots of sensible and practical suggestions based on the latest research. We would like to tell you that there is a new miracle drug to prevent cancer or reverse aging. That just isn't the case...Alas the road to good health in midlife remains largely dependent on three key ideas: a positive approach, moderation, and consistency."

You can pick this book up, choose any any chapter and find information, short stories of other Baby Boomers' experiences, short charts, and explanations. It begins with a small chapter on the Midlife Journey, and closes with a short chapter called Body, Mind and Soul.

In between, there are separate chapters on specific female and male issues (prostate cancer; male menopause; female menopause; breast cancer), as well as shared concerns. Memory loss, heart care, intimate relationships, the search for the Fountain of Youth, Healthy Eating, Exercise and much more are covered.

Best of all, at the end of every chapter is a reference list with more books to read, organizations, websites to visit and a cross-reference to other chapters in this book.

The thick paperback edition has an attractive cover, quite suitable as a gift. And if someone doesn't give it to you as a gift, do yourself a favor-- get yourself a copy!
