Navigation: The simple and amazing strategy
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-12
"Navigation" could be a one-word summary and one phrasal summary for this book could be "between the rock and the whirlpool". Both, the word and the phrase are used in the context of successful business management. Corporate dilemma, the chief concern of this book, earlier seemed like a crossroad in the operations of the company where the company could take advantage of either one of the two alternatives. Synergy between alternatives seemed like a contradiction. It was like trying to find a synergy between economies of scale and flexible manufacturing. The presence of one ruled out the presence of the other. So Henry ford chose the mass production against customized production. Companies chose either cooperation or competition among product groups. This book attempts to and succeeds in synergizing these two so-called horns of a corporate dilemma. According to the author, in the current competitive environment, the resolution of dilemmas is not a choice but a requirement failing which the company gets enveloped in the vicious cycle of extremes of a particular way of functioning (excessive reliance on economies of scale leading to complete ignorance of changes in customer's taste and requirements). Managers in most of the companies stop short of resolving these dilemmas even after realizing their presence on account of the painful nature of its resolution. Thus the inability to take a decision becomes a decision for the worse of the organization. The book represents a paradigm shift in the way of strategy building. It teaches the superiority of reconciliation (integration of differences) over the resolution (compromise) of disputes.
The book beautifully deals with the concepts as well as the practical applicability of the dilemma theory. Many times the level of abstraction involved in the theory dissuades further reading but the application part pulls the interest back Not a light read it would require effort on the part of reader to understand the concepts before he gets into the flow. Though the book has been written with companies in mind the theory seems as much applicable in an individual's life where one encounters hostility in the outer environment which leads to a deadlock. That unraveling is possible would be a beacon of light to many people caught in a blind alley's of life. With competition rooting away the superficial rules of success made by the mankind it's time again to look around at the nature and learn the basic and simple rules of living in harmony. That harmony is the basis of existence (of businesses & individuals) is just not a coincidence. It's providence. It's the future.

Definitely a great story in this novel. The way the author has taken us on the journey makes you feel as if you are riding King Flint and Flint Remembered too. Add this one to your list, in my opinion, it's definitely worth the read!

I actually have not read the book. However, from viewing the 1st part of Anne Thurston's series on C-SPAN, I found her to be very objective and knowledgable about China. She has traveled to many parts of the China and has got first hand experience with the real people in China. Although this book may be a little dated considering the rapid changes happening in China, I am sure you would benefit from having this book if you have never been to China before.

Hip Hop meets Fantasy...Who would've thought?

Absolutely ingenious! D.D. Turner has truly stumbled upon something. His successful attempt to favorably find a symbiotic existence between Hip Hop and the fantasy genre is dead-on to say the least. Albeit fiction, the true essence of the b-boy/girl culture have been captured without compromising fundamental values and the importance of education. Not in a long while has the culture of Hip Hop had a popular piece of work that can be engaged by the entire family. But with the authorship of this literary work, D.D. Turner has definitively and substantially extended the branches on Hip Hop's tree of tangible, worthwhile accomplishments...Word is born!

Top notch! You owe it to yourself to own it!

It is quite rare to find between the covers of a film book a combination so exact between an interesting and well developed theme and graphic elements of very high caliber. This happens with "The Cinema of Adventure, Romance & Terror", a publication of the American Society of Cinematographers. This is not casual. The book was edited by the late George E.Turner, a staff member of ASC, a Hollywood professional, a special effects artist, animator, journalist, historian and professor. The book also has the valuable contributions of other experts such as Rudy Behlmer, Scott MacQeen, Paul Mandell, George J. Mitchell and Michael H. Price, most of them movie professionals, writers or illustrators. The book captures its reader with the wealth of data it gives on 24 films, and thoroughly covers the interests of any film fan or student. Each film is minutely narrated with information of how it came into being, how it was shot and includes details of the complexities faced. A complete technical file accompanies each film. The reader step by step will be thrust into the magic world of film production whose era is long gone. A vivid and nimble prose together with amazing images will awe the reader. The best techniques in restoring old photographs has been wisely combined with the wit of excellent diagraming and top notch printing. Many of those pictures (336 illustrations) never looked it its era as perfect in their grey values as they do now, and can be admired in this book that casts such a magical spell. Unforgetable Hollywood filmic landmarks such as "The Hunchback of Notre Dame","Dracula","Frankestein","Tarzan","Flash Gordon","Rope","Laura","The Night of the Hunter",etc.,reveal their secrets, detail their creation, and show the splendid results obtained. It is a must to own such a book. Don't wait till it is out of print. You owe it to yourself to own a copy and enjoy again and again the legacy those masters left for our awe.

Adventure and mystery and a real page-turner
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1998-01-16
City of Exile is a fine fantasy novel and a fitting conclusion to the Caledon trilogy. At last we see more of the Feyan and get a bit of insight into their well-drawn and quite alien culture. The juxtaposition of the highly-mannered Feyan, the rough but noble Caledons and the insufferable Berings makes for added depth in a novel that is full of swashbuckling adventure, high court intrigue and dealing with demons. Turner Harris also provides enough moral grey areas to keep things interesting for the intelligent reader in this quite superior novel. One of her best to date - can't wait for more!

I would have given this book a 10, but I'm saving that for her next book - this author gets better and better.

John Lennon 101
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-09-25
Musicians, writers, artists and fans alike should read this candid biopic into the lives of John & Yoko during the prime of their lives and populariy. They were involved. They were controversial. They were naive. They were important and outspoken... and most of all, vulnerable. Anthony Fawcett was more than sympathetic... he was privileged to find himself involved at a time when the magic of John Lennon transcended who he even thought he was. Forever dispells the silly myth that Yoko, Linda or anything other than John's decision broke up the Beatles.
