This book is beautifully designed and well organized. Full color photography enhances each page. It includes basic information on gardening with native plants, planning a garden, attracting birds, butterflies, and other wildlife to your yard. Photographs and desriptions of plants and trees, organized by geographic location, are accompanied by maps, field notes, tips, and drawings of animals prefered by each. Lots of references are included in the back. It may be geared more towards the layperson than the expert, but this book really opened my eyes to the possibilities of gardening. Gardening is not just picking pretty flowers anymore! Natural Gardening a joy to browse through and to read.

I don't have children, but I found this in a children's asile in my local bookstore and I had to buy it! This is the book I have on my backyard picnic table right now and I read thru it daily and love it! It's NUMBER 1 on my list of books to read right now with summer here. The photos are wonderful; the small editorials are written so that anyone can understand them, and as an adult I don't see the "child -like" reading here, but rather a book that everyone can enjoy and learn from and all of Time Life Books are finely manufactured. For a book I'd rate them as "Excellent Quality" and suggest this along with the other's from this series would make a wonderful gift for children and adults alike. You'll learn alot about gardening, how to attract butterflies or hummingbirds to your backyard; wild flowering, A-Z, way too much to mention.

A lot of history is presented in this book. There's 269 pages of text with 34 pages of footnotes. I learned a lot just from the historical materials presented. Turner's inferences seemed compelling, although my own ignorance in this area prevents me from being certain he's on the mark. However, nothing he said contradicted what I expected. I remain open to other sources including reviewers of Turner, but this work appears to be sharp and enriching.

I've heard many different ideas about God and, until I read this book, I was largely unaware of their historicity. I viewed arguments about God as being believers versus unbelievers: it hadn't occurred to me that, in attempting to adjust to modern developments, Christian leaders had themselves reduced the need for God as an explanation. Although Turner seems impartial, his research has done unbelief a great service. Not that unbelievers should be complacent, but it does seem reassuring that modern historical developments have undermined, and should continue to undermine, the need for religious belief and allow for more constructive responses to the human predicament. Historical determinism? Or just humanity growing up?

A must-read for understanding the state of (un)belief

This book is excellently written and very illuminating on the subject of how it came to be possible that a person could say 'I don't believe in God.' Turner takes the reader through history from the Rennaissance to the mid-19th century to show the progress of unbelief. Interestingly, his thesis, which is very well argued, is that it was the Church herself who let in the demons of unbelief, which usually came in the form of scientific discovery. In brief, the Church shot herself in the foot.

This is not a tract against the Church, though. It is very clearly written to show how those events and beliefs which undermined the legitimacy of the Church were not necessarily bad; it was the Church who made them so. For example, scientific discovery in itself was not bad, but the Church before the scientific revolution had based its legitimacy so strongly on the literal account of Creation, for example, that when there was doubt thrown on that theory, everything began to crumble.

Turner is pretty much done with his story by the mid 1800s, before Darwin's _Origin of Species_ was published. Contrary to popular imagination, Darwin's theory was not particularly groundbreaking in the case for atheism; the groundwork had already been set.

This book is not difficult to read at all, yet it tackles some tough subject material. Highly recommended for readers of all scientific and religious backgrounds.

My son and I read together at night. He is 8 years old and not all that interested in reading books "just for fun" on his own. But, he doesn't let a night go by without some reading time "together". We loved this book the minute we began. Switching reading turns per page, it was a great book to use character voices and talk about the books "Richard" had to deal with. Fun reading. My daugher, 5, loves it too.

I used this book from 1986 to 1995. For the most part, during that time interval the book was a gem providing information that generally isn't found in Lonely Planet guides etc. I keep hoping a new addition will come out. I've travelled during the above time period about two dozen times to Paris for business and pleasure, and found Turner's guide to be outstanding independent of your budget.

This book was unbelievably perfect for my pen loving/wood carving husband. While he had purchased several tools and supplies for making pens, this book inspired his creative side. The photos are beautiful, the instructions are clear, and this is the perfect book for those "hard to please" craftsmen on your list.

Everything you need to know to turn a pen

Review Date: 2005-11-13
As a newbie to pen turning, I was looking for a book that would give me a step-by-step explanation of how to set up the pen blank for turning on the lathe. I also wanted an explanation of the parts/pieces used in turning a pen such as what a mandrel is and how it is used to turn the pen, what bushing are and what they were used for, what stains and finishes were the best to use and some project ideas.

The book begins by explaining which lathe (in case you don't have one) to buy for they type of project you plan to turn. Lathes can be used for turning other projects than just pens and the author provided that information as well. He continues with which tools and materials are good to work with and he even explains how to "approach" the wood with the tool while it is on the lathe.

He has a section on stains and finishes which I plan to try. I knew about dyes but not which one(s) to try. The author cleaned that up for me for which I am grateful. Then we come to the first project, a Slimline pen. While the photos were very good in showing what was being explained in words, this project didn't explain how the bushings were used or even what they were for. Never having turned a pen, I was lost but I kept reading.

In Project Two, in Step Six, how to place the bushings on the mandrel was finally explained. Yippie, now I can give turning a pen a try because I know how to "load" the mandrel. Maybe putting this explanation in Project One might be a good idea when the book gets a rewrite.

There are nine projects and six material types shown so I shouldn't run out of ideas on what materials to use or what style of pens to turn. He even provides a section on how to market what you turn.

This book was everything I was looking for in a pen turning tutorial book. If you are planning to turn pens, I would definitely recommend this easy to read and easy to understand book.

This is one of the best books on Bonnard the color repros are good and sometimes enlarged.. Besides Antoine Terrase's book" drawing to color "this book shows how Bonnard worked up his paintings from little drawings from a daily diary he used as a sketchbook. The photos shows Bonnard's studio in Le Cannet. Also,Some of his shots of nudes. It has repros found in few other books. I have Bonnard books stemming from the MOMA exhibit after WW11 by John Rewald, Another book that had rare color repros was Bonnard edited by R.J. Beer. This is a good buy and a worthwhile study of the work. Winston Hough

Good Book on an Underrated Painter

"Early and Late" is the book that accompanied the Phillips Collection's 2002 exhibit on Bonnard's early and late works. The exhibitition was beautiful. The book, of course, doesn't do justice to the colors in the originals, but the book's prints, particularly the details, are very good.

The book includes a chronology of Bonnnard's life, three excellent essays, and some notes from Bonnard's journals. One essay discusses Bonnard's innovations, especially early on and especially his use of photography as a way to prepare for his paintings. Another essay shows how Bonnard's paintings were influenced by his reformed education. A final essay demonstrates Bonnard's debt to Japanese art.

Bonnard's longevity, I think, has kept him from having more of a reputation as an innovator. A quick overview of Bonnard's work shows that he was still painting postimpressionism toward the middle of the 20th Century. His use of different points of view and contrasting colors, and the subservience of the object to the idea make him more than a late impressionist. Basically, I like this guy's work, and this book helped me answer my question, "What is it about this man's painting that I like?"

I've got to say when I was looking for a book to help me harvest plants and such for basketry making I would have never come across this book if it wasn't for my sister-in-Law. She told me that she had this great book about plants, history, etc. of the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, and Canada that might be helpful. I bought it hoping it might help. Well I've got the book and its perfect! The author did a wonderful job in discription of the plants, and their uses and she went on to other things that are very useful in basketry! I would recomend this book for anyone wanting to harvest plants for basketry. I would also recomend that the sellers of this book make it more available for those into basketry, not only because of the plants, but also the history of basketry!

Nancy Turner's book on plant uses by the First Peoples of British Columbia is a treasure house of ancient knowledge: how the plants of the Pacific Northwest were used by the original inhabitants. In an aboriginal technology, plants were used in almost every aspect of life: housing, clothing, transportation, weapons, fishing lines, basketry--all depended on skillful manipulation of plant materials. Organized by plant group, each plant's uses are discussed. The book will appeal to craft workers as much as anthropologists and other students of native woods lore because the methods of preparation are included.

Insightful theology in light of African American experience on one of theology's enduring questions
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-25
JoAnne Terrell's "Power in the Blood?" is a richly informed and personally honest theological interrogation of the meaning of the cross in African American experience. Both serious and sensitive to the enduring effects of racism and sexism in American history, Christianity, and the church, Terrell's book faithfully considers classical Atonement theory in light of African American religious sources and personal narrative, ultimately arguing for a critical, yet redemptive appropriation of Jesus Christ on the cross in light of suffering.

The author is both an African American woman minister and scholar. Thus, she positions herself with the strong Womanist critique of atonement theory (particularly Delores William's critique of Christ as surrogate), but critically considers how Christ's blood spilt on the cross retains a sacramental understanding of redemptive suffering amidst the God's call for justice on the side of persons under the weight of oppression. Terrell stands on both the classical tradition (particularly Abelard) and, as a Womanist, on her own experience. From this evidence, the author critically appropriates how the suffering of Christ - the power of his blood - can and does historically provide a sense of both agency and strength.

The author's perspective is creatively informed and complex, substantiated with theological acumen across classical theology, African American religion, as well as her own personal experience and reflection.

"Power in the Blood?" is a great book for seminarians, pastors, and theologians interested in Atonement theory, Christology, Womanism, and African American experience.

This is a must read for anybody under going any kind of pain and suffering. It is very important to believe in something strongly either God or medical treatment and firmly stick to it. It is amazing how Africian Americans strongly beleived in God , despite the dreadfully life in American. It thought me that God in its infinite goodness is inexhaustaible when it comes to his grace for his children. By reading this book you will learn the other aspites of life that is so enriching despite lack of material wealth but just with faith in Christ. There are many lessions to learn for everybody from this book either from the power of Jesus or from practical faith on something.
