Pure, raw, and explicit. Jibreel has taken his wide variety of experiences and combined them into a spill of overwhelmingly deep and profound works of art. It is rare and refreshing to see the influence of Dickenson and Hughes throughout modern poetry and actually enjoy it!

Unquestionably the most understandable, interesting, even entertaining text for introduction to music courses. It would also be an excellent gift for anyone wanting to know more about classical, ethnic and contemporary music. The CD ROMs add immeasurably to the book, providing graphic illustrations of the ideas in the text. An outstanding book.

The world of music at your fingertips, with 2 CDs

This is a beautiful book. Anyone who wants to learn more about music -- its notation, its instrumentation, its history, how and why it moves us -- will enjoy this book immensely. It discusses music theory in understandable terms, covering rhythm, melody, harmony, dynamics, timbre, and organization. The instruments of the classical orchestra are all explained, as are folk instruments. In fact, folk music from around the world is discussed as a prelude to the main sections on the so-called "art music" of Europe and America. I especially liked the Listening Guides. They correspond to tracks on the two CDs that come with the book. The author explains what's going on at each important part of a piece of music, with timings provided so you can follow along, and even provides musical notation showing important themes. I don't read music, but I enjoyed being able to see the score of a familiar strain and following along with the Listening Guide to better understand what the music was about. There are also biographies of each important composer and beautiful full-color reproductions of art from the period being discussed. The book also includes an appendix about musical notation (which if I had studied better would probably give me musical literacy). It also has a very useful glossary and index. This book is obviously a college textbook, but anyone who wants to increase his or her understanding and appreciation of the world music will benefit from reading it.

"My Amish Heritage, The Pictorial Journey Of Ruth Irene Garrett," is a collection of 450 or more of the most unusual and outstanding photographs I've ever seen of Amish life. You can tell from the very beginning that the photographer (Ottie Garrett) was having fun, but yet he was very serious about his work. The different types of photographs(action, stills, scenery and children) proves that there is an understanding between the photographer and his subject, an achievement in the art of photography. I personally feel that "My Amish Heritage" is a great follow up and accessory to Ruth Irene Garrett's book "Crossing Over: One Woman's Escape from Amish Life." Not only does it capture Ruth Irene's life in the Amish world but her transformation to the modern world. It also gives the reader a closer look at the real world of the Amish. Ruth Irene and Ottie have given us an insight into the Amish world that is seldom ever seen. Turner Publishing's presentation of "My Amish Heritage" should be commended for an excellent job. If the saying is true that a picture is worth a thousand words, then this book is priceless.

Ruth Irene Garrett gets a sure "thumbs up" from me for "My Amish Heritage." The pictures are so beautiful and well processed. At times, I thought I was in a time capsule, being zapped back to the farm in Lancaster County. At other times, I reflected the 10 mile an hour buggy rides down the flower-covered dirt roads! Remarkable!

My Rules: Photozine

a must for serious collectors

Here's a the background for this first ever "photo-zine".

Glen E. Friedman shot, art directed and published the influential punk chronicle My Rules, one of the first comprehensive looks at the American hardcore punk scene.

Including incredible iconic photographs shot by friedman of bands such as BLACK FLAG, DEAD KENNEDYS, MINOR THREAT, BAD BRAINS, MISFITS, CIRCLE JERKS, T.S.O.L., and many others including the GERMS, on the front cover (a live photo of Darby Crash, taken at their last show just days before his suicide.)

MY RULES is the "DIY" first ever solo publication of the work of Glen E. Friedman. Originally self-published in the fall of 1982, it was unique in it's time. The first ever "photo-zine". Billed as "The One and Only Issue", never planned to be a regular fan'zine that would be published on a regular basis, Friedman knew from the start it was to be a one off project. Basically a book put together in a fanzine format.

At the time it was made it was actually the biggest print-run for fanzine, ever. 10,000 copies were printed and distributed by Friedman himself. In the first 2 years over 8,000 were sold, and over the next ten years or so the rest were sold via mail order only. Nowadays it can be found occasionally on E-Bay often selling for over $100 a copy (It's original cover price was just $2.oo)

Once MY RULES was out-of-print entirely the folks at Henry Rollins' 2.13.61 publications, who would later split off and become CONSAFOS Press, approached Glen with the idea of re-publishing it as a soft cover book, he turned down the idea, but after the success of his first hardcover monograph F*CK YOU HEROES, instead agreed he would create a scrapbook of some of the images that were in MY RULES and many more, including his early skate and hip-hop shots, to create the book F*CK YOU TOO.

When G.E.F. was getting together the pieces for MY RULES he called upon some of his friends to ask if they would make written contributions to his special 'photozine'. These friends were all important figures of the American Punk Rock scene, from several of the major regions in the U.S. He told them: "What ever you'd like to communicate, or base it upon the MY RULES theme" (which itself was inspired by the BLACK FLAG song of the same name). He offered the UN-EDITED space, and this was to be the only writing in the entire 'zine. The contributors Included Chuck Dukowski of Black Flag, Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat, Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys, H.R. of the Bad Brains, Al Barile of S.S. Decontrol, Keith Morris of the Circle jerks, Barry Hensler of the Necros, and Randy Turner of the Big Boys. (If you can't find a copy of My Rules, these essays can also be found on the Idealist Propaganda website)

All in all MY RULES in a punk classic as well as an incredible document of the early punk work of Glen E. Friedman.

Better than your grade school yearbook

In 1982, photography, BLACK FLAG and the value of $2.00 meant nothing to this then three-year-old kid. Some 20 years later, I picked up nearly mint copy of MY RULES for around $70.00 on eBay and finally experienced, albeit on yellowing paper, what I was born too late to witness at the time. But this is a vital time capsule worth preserving to remember the mentality and energy that's harder to find these days in these art forms. For me, it's better than any yearbook from grade school.

This book is beautifully designed and well organized. Full color photography enhances each page. It includes basic information on gardening with native plants, planning a garden, attracting birds, butterflies, and other wildlife to your yard. Photographs and desriptions of plants and trees, organized by geographic location, are accompanied by maps, field notes, tips, and drawings of animals prefered by each. Lots of references are included in the back. It may be geared more towards the layperson than the expert, but this book really opened my eyes to the possibilities of gardening. Gardening is not just picking pretty flowers anymore! Natural Gardening a joy to browse through and to read.

I don't have children, but I found this in a children's asile in my local bookstore and I had to buy it! This is the book I have on my backyard picnic table right now and I read thru it daily and love it! It's NUMBER 1 on my list of books to read right now with summer here. The photos are wonderful; the small editorials are written so that anyone can understand them, and as an adult I don't see the "child -like" reading here, but rather a book that everyone can enjoy and learn from and all of Time Life Books are finely manufactured. For a book I'd rate them as "Excellent Quality" and suggest this along with the other's from this series would make a wonderful gift for children and adults alike. You'll learn alot about gardening, how to attract butterflies or hummingbirds to your backyard; wild flowering, A-Z, way too much to mention.

Exceptional intellectual history

A lot of history is presented in this book. There's 269 pages of text with 34 pages of footnotes. I learned a lot just from the historical materials presented. Turner's inferences seemed compelling, although my own ignorance in this area prevents me from being certain he's on the mark. However, nothing he said contradicted what I expected. I remain open to other sources including reviewers of Turner, but this work appears to be sharp and enriching.

I've heard many different ideas about God and, until I read this book, I was largely unaware of their historicity. I viewed arguments about God as being believers versus unbelievers: it hadn't occurred to me that, in attempting to adjust to modern developments, Christian leaders had themselves reduced the need for God as an explanation. Although Turner seems impartial, his research has done unbelief a great service. Not that unbelievers should be complacent, but it does seem reassuring that modern historical developments have undermined, and should continue to undermine, the need for religious belief and allow for more constructive responses to the human predicament. Historical determinism? Or just humanity growing up?

A must-read for understanding the state of (un)belief

This book is excellently written and very illuminating on the subject of how it came to be possible that a person could say 'I don't believe in God.' Turner takes the reader through history from the Rennaissance to the mid-19th century to show the progress of unbelief. Interestingly, his thesis, which is very well argued, is that it was the Church herself who let in the demons of unbelief, which usually came in the form of scientific discovery. In brief, the Church shot herself in the foot.

This is not a tract against the Church, though. It is very clearly written to show how those events and beliefs which undermined the legitimacy of the Church were not necessarily bad; it was the Church who made them so. For example, scientific discovery in itself was not bad, but the Church before the scientific revolution had based its legitimacy so strongly on the literal account of Creation, for example, that when there was doubt thrown on that theory, everything began to crumble.

Turner is pretty much done with his story by the mid 1800s, before Darwin's _Origin of Species_ was published. Contrary to popular imagination, Darwin's theory was not particularly groundbreaking in the case for atheism; the groundwork had already been set.

This book is not difficult to read at all, yet it tackles some tough subject material. Highly recommended for readers of all scientific and religious backgrounds.

My son and I read together at night. He is 8 years old and not all that interested in reading books "just for fun" on his own. But, he doesn't let a night go by without some reading time "together". We loved this book the minute we began. Switching reading turns per page, it was a great book to use character voices and talk about the books "Richard" had to deal with. Fun reading. My daugher, 5, loves it too.

I used this book from 1986 to 1995. For the most part, during that time interval the book was a gem providing information that generally isn't found in Lonely Planet guides etc. I keep hoping a new addition will come out. I've travelled during the above time period about two dozen times to Paris for business and pleasure, and found Turner's guide to be outstanding independent of your budget.
