Maritime for Murder

Review Date: 2000-12-28
Lynn Turner invites the reader to the sheltered coves and rock-bound coasts of Nova Scotia, introducing Keely Dunwich, successful city lawyer seeking a slower pace amid her small town roots. The suspicious residents of Gottingen offer a mixed welcome when she inherits her grandmother's weathered jumble of a cottage complete with obese pussycat. Troubles have plagued the Maritimes since jobs disappeared with the cod moratorium. Now a secretive German consortium arrives to gobble oceanfront property for an exclusive resort. Suddenly Keely becomes embroiled in a murder and enamoured of a handsome cannery owner with a dark and brooding side. To add to the distractions, it seems that her Wiccan grandmother's gifts may have skipped a generation. Did that crystal ball really change colours? What is the ancient cat trying to convey? Shrugging off the antics as coincidence, she resists experimenting with the family powers.

Turner's romantic touch is deft, the attraction between Keely and the bold and complex Jay building slowly and subtly. The secondary characters, especially the prickly Delu, enhance the lively pace of a crafted plot through their consistent human motivations. Above all, the sense of place shines through sensory details. Enjoy a bowl of creamy lobster chowder, smell the salt sea air, and pick your way across the jagged rocks dripping with seaweed, until a rolling fog blots out the land that time and industry forgot.

Understand Group Process and Train Leaders

For the part of Leadership that can be learned- that isn't that charismatic indefinable quality- this book is the best. Train all committee members to be leaders and to understand what goes on among them as they work or learn. Group dynamics are not an exact science but neither are they a huge mystery, and this book pulls together solid organizational theory to give a very practical guide to understanding and working with groups. I recommend it highly to all in church leadership (including and especially lay folks.)

A powerhouse of information packed into one paperback.

After critiquing quite a few books, Turner's was by far the best. This can be used by leaders and participants. This book is better than buying several individual books.

I have known Bill Turner for over 20 years. His personal kindness has never ceased to amaze me, and in this deeply moving book, I now understand the roots of someone who could make a group of teens struggling with growing pains feel secure. Bill made it possible for us to accept each other, and I imagine his professional relationships are the same. I recommend this book wholeheartedly to anyone looking to bring respect into the workplace, or to anyone looking to improve relationships - with family, friends, youth, coworkers, employees, and the Lord.

A Guide for Business and a Guide for Life

Review Date: 1999-12-21
This book by Mr. Turner is a must read for anyone in business, especially anyone in a leadership or management position who desires to know more about the art of leading people. A wonderfully organized book, including a reflective piece at the end of each chapter with passing thoughts for further contemplation. A rare treat hidden at the end of Chapter 2 gives the reader a unique look at some of the thoughts handed down by Bill Turner's grandfather, Mr. William Clark Bradley. These nuggets alone are worth the price of the book. I'm sure I have heard many of these maxims quoted over the years. Admittedly, some surprised me with the wisdom contained. Mr. Bill Turner is an artist who paints before the reader's eyes a portrait - a deeply moving family portrait that is intensely personal. One has the feeling they have been invited into the Turner home, given a cup of tea or a cold Coca-Cola, and handed the family scrapbook. The value of the book goes far beyond the warm and personal reflections, and even the important historical content. The book is woven with Mr. Turner's values. It lets us look at the heart of an executive who has lived his life under the guiding principle of love. His relationships, both business and personal are a set of luminaries in a dark night, showing us the way to better personal relations, and more effective leadership. I learned a lot about a servant's heart from Mr. Turner. Moreover, I have used, and will continue to use, the principles he teaches in this book to become a better manager and steward in my business life and a better man in my personal life. This book belongs in the personal library of every man who leads people. My prayer is that it will also find its way into many school libraries. This book will not disappoint. It is a great read, warmly written and containing very valuable insight.

A Very Honorable Tribute to the Great Men of "Spearhead"

An outstanding publication summarizing much of what was published in the 1945 3rd Armored Division, "Spearhead in the West." See maps, personal photos from France, the Bulge, Cologne, all the way up to the present day memorials in Belgium. The 3rd Armored's role in Desert Storm is also summarized at the end of the book. I especially admire the "then and now" photos along with stories from WWII veterans who served proudly. This book salutes my grandfather and all of the brave men of the 3rd who helped bring down Nazi Germany. GREAT PUBLICATION!!

This is a history of the Third Armored Division's participation in the war against the forces of Nazi Germany in Europe. It is very good and contains all the ingredients, pictures, text, maps and tatical maps, to make it a must for military history buffs. It was originally published and issued, after the war ended, to all veterans. I can attest to it's accuracy. I am a veteran of the Division. I am seeking one of the original editions published in 1945.

Excellent guide for liturgical ministers and planners
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-05
Let Us Pray is a guide to the Catholic Mass. It is not so much a book for someone seeking a personal understanding of the Eucharist as it is a manual for ministers and planners. It offers a thorough commentary on the rubrics of the Mass, that is, the how-to instructions for each part of the celebration.

The publication of the revised General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) in 2002-03 seems to be the occasion for this new guide. It proceeds through the Mass from opening to close. For each part, author Paul Turner explains what church documents say, principles behind the rubrics, and common practices.

Why not just read the GIRM instead of a book like this? What more does this author offer?
1) Turner unpacks the GIRM. He shows how principles mentioned in one part of the GIRM apply to each part of the Mass, and he highlights variations and exceptions.
2) He includes guidelines from other documents - Directory for Masses with Children, Pastoral Introduction to the Order of Mass, etc.
3) Turner points out changes from the earlier General Instruction, explaining what is new in the 'new' GIRM and why.
4) Turner describes what actually happens in parishes, not just what 'should' happen. This includes things not addressed in the GIRM, such as some gestures and postures of the assembly.

In this last aspect, the treatment is uneven. Some popular practices are mentioned, others not. When Turner says certain things are common in parishes, is this simply an observation? Or based on research?

Even so, this is a valuable and practical guide for liturgical ministers and planners - priests, deacons, lay ministers, liturgy committees, and those who are serious students of liturgy.

Increase Appreciation for World's Greatest Miracle

Review Date: 2006-07-11
In this fascinating work, the author presents the central details about the celebration of the Eucharist. The rubrics, or instructions governing those details, are designed to "ensure that what happens at Mass is what the Church intends." In his introduction, Turner gives some background on development of the rubrics, relevant Church documents, scriptural influence, and historical precedent. It is precedent that prompts some priests to retain the practice of keeping their fingers together after touching the consecrated host, though the gesture is no longer required. Precedent also underlies regional customs embraced by the faithful such as striking the breast three times during the elevations.

Turner acknowledges that a balance between variety and constancy in the Mass can become an issue for some individuals, but that the rubrics for Mass are not unlike the blueprint for a building. "The finished product needs careful direction, but it also needs heart and soul.... Mass needs the rubrics in order to be the Mass, but it takes more than rubrics to pray."

"Let Us Pray" consists of more than 800 numbered paragraphs with specifics on every aspect of the Mass in sequential order. For example, there are frequent references to changes in the priest's body language in post Vatican II rubrics, notably how high the hands should be held or how widely spread at certain points. Or that the priest should look directly at members of the assembly when he is addressing them, but look upward and into the distance when addressing God. And if the priest is wearing a wireless microphone, he should shut it off after the Collect.

While these "little-known-facts" are of interest, they are only a minor element of Turner's explanation of the Sunday Mass, which he proclaims to be "the greatest miracle in the world." The book is a valuable resource for anyone who wishes to increase his appreciation of the Mass and especially for liturgists, catechists, and those who train lay ministers.

Very good book and very, very funny. The stories are short and concise making the book easy to pick up and read a few stories at one's leisure. A slight warning however, the stories are so entertaining that it's hard to put the thing down. A great book for everyone, but especially for those of us that remember those wonderful baseball years.

I am 61 years old and I read this series when I was in grade school. I read them over and over and they made a great impression on me. Each story made me feel as though I were a part of history. I admired these young girls and their families so much!
I have searched for years to find them and could find no one who had heard of them. I would recommend them for every young girl's library. They teach a lot about honesty, courage, and strength of character in addition to their historical value.
I am so thrilled to see these books in print once more.

I remember this book when I was a child in the 60's. It was the type of fantasy adventure I would have loved to have.I've searched for this book for years, and I'm sorry I couldn't find it when my daughter was a child. But when I got it last week and read it for my 2 granddaughters, they have fallen in love with it as much as I did when I first read it. this is an excellent storybook for any little girl who loves a fantasy.

My husband pastors a church in Shawnee, Kansas. Apologetics is a cornerstone of his studies and ministry. He was delighted with the thoroughness and simplicity of Teresa Vining's book and thought it useful in day-to-day conversations with seekers and skeptics. (I have purchased and given away four copies. Three copies were given to women who desired to firm up what they believed and why.) Most recently, I gave my last copy to a man who had just experienced an exciting conversation with his office associate who was questioning him about Christianity. He was thrilled for the opportunity to encourage dialogue, and he was grateful for the answers provided through giving Ms. Vining's book to his co-worker. I know this book is a great gift in this kind of encounter, because the book invites the reader to make personal inquiry. The information is presented clearly without force-feeding conclusions.

A wonderful addition to apologetics titles

I had the privilege of reading the manuscript before it was printed, which made me all the more anxious to see this book in print so I could recommend it to others. Teresa has really done her homework in answering many questions that assail believers as well as those who have not yet trusted Christ. In addition to being an excellent basic apologetics book, this book's value lies in the insightful questions which, when used with a journal as she recommends, will allow the reader to know WHAT they believe and THAT they believe.
