I enjoyed reading this book thoroughly....it was an easy read and I found myself looking up my friends and family members' birthdays and then going back through it to see how their personalities compared with the author's descriptions. Surprisingly, her sun signs personality definitions truly matched the people I knew, including me. I would reccommend this book to anyone looking for a fun way to analyze yourself and others using the sun signs.

What poetry can be

When so much poetry is sloppy and meandering, meant more for the poet's analyst than for an intelligent reader, Cassity's work is sharp and focussed. It's also tightly compressed, so that reading even a short poem is a deeply engaging intellectual activity. This work demands the reader's concentration, but it is not work to read it. The poems are not deliberately difficult, obscure, or capriciously playful--they are simply good. If you're looking for something to read that will get your synapses firing, and will reward you in the end, give Cassity a try.
Cassity is a poet of inexhaustible wit and intelligence.

Turner Cassity has taken on a startling range of subjects in his highly-crafted poetry. A few of his titles, advertising poems, serve well to advertise this collection: "Knowledge Is Power, But Only If You Misuse It," "Meaner than a Junkyard Dog, or, Turner's Evil Twin," "Do Not Judge By Appearances. Or Do.", "Some People Have No Small Talk," and "Vegetarian Mary and the Venus Flytrap." Admirers of Richard Wilbur and Howard Nemerov will enjoy Cassity's work as well.

The role of culture in human societies is explored through a combination of empirical research and the nimble mind and imaginative powers of the late Victor Turner. This collection will prove especially useful to students of comparative religion, social/cultural anthropology, literature, performance, and the visual arts. Turner's essays are far from dry. They thrill with their ability to combine close observations of the "exotic" beliefs of non-Western peoples and cutting edge insights into more familiar cultural dimensions of everyday life in western Europe and the United States.

A.C.Turner writes a wonderful work as he expresses the innate desire of every human being to reach our purpose and destiny. The rythm of his words is refreshing and I was pulled into the book through the solid truths and clear points. This was a great read and I encourage others to take a peek at this book. He weaves so much of himself into the book that you can actually feel his pain and his success. A great read.

I featured this book in my 4th grade class's unit on "How We Came to California." It was the best book that told about the journey of many families to the Golden State during the Dust Bowl Days because it included why they left, how they came and the struggle once they got here. To make it even more special, my grandmother came to read it to the students because she lived in CA during this time and helped the people who came to her town from Oaklahoma and Kansas. Having an elder read it to the kids was the most memorable thing to many of the kids who simply did not know about this period of their family's history.

Very good introduction to cosmology

The Early Universe provides an excellent introduction to the topics it covers, including the standard big bang cosmology, baryogenesis and inflation. I read Dodelson's Modern Cosmology before this text, and the two compliment each other. The Early Universe provides a more complete and physically intuitive description of the standard big bang cosmology, including the role of thermodynamics, nucleosynthesis and out-of-equilibrium dynamics. Because of the attention to the "background" dynamics, and also to baryogenesis, phase transitions, inflation, and other applications of high energy physics, one gets a better sense of the "bigger picture" with Kolb and Turner's text. On the other hand, The Early Universe lacks any technical discussion of metric perturbations and CMB analysis, which are important components of much current research. These are highly emphasized in Dodelson's text. For appropriate topics, I have found The Early Universe to be a very good reference.

The anthropologist author's deep appreciation of and respect for indigenous people's knowledge shines through this entire account. In addition to providing numerous accounts of specific applications of plant, animal and mineral knowledge as embodied in traditional stories, she does not shrink from demonstrating how the attitudes embodied in them have wide application in trying to establish a sustainable human society worldwide. This book could easily be used in university courses on systems design as well as environmental studies and anthropology. Highly recommended!

Anyone who has ever read Dr Turner's work will realize how thorough she is. This book is a departure from her usual style, however. Rather than being a collection of plants and in-depth analysis of their uses by North America's First Nations, The Earth's Blanket casts a much wider net, interpreting her decades of travel and research, as they apply to the concept that "we are all one...". It is an extraordinary work of a great Canadian ecological thinker.

In many ways, the condottiere represented a high point of late medieval warfare, wearing the finest gothic armor and fighting with swords and lances. They also employed footmen to wield staff weapons, longbows, and various primitive firearms. The finer details of their appearance and armament, as well as their daily life, experience of battle, medical treatment (or more often, lack thereof), and their straightforward battle tactics are all expertly examined by the author David Murphy.
The color plates are by the experienced Osprey artist Graham Turner, and are nicely done indeed. They expertly portray the condottiere at various stages of his career, including recruitment and battle. The appearance of individual condottiere at the beginning and end of this period are also illustrated, along with battle tactics, medical treatment, English condottiere on the march, a mercenary suiting up before a battle, and Niccolo de Tolentino, a famous Florentine condottiere leader, goading his men on at the Battle of San Romano in 1432.
Other useful details of the book include the black-and-white illustrations and photographs throughout, a short chronology, and a handy glossary at the back. Overall, this book serves as a fine source on the men who were indeed the most 'Infamous Medieval Mercenaries'.
