Loved it. This is a great book. Our book club read it and many members have decided to read Quilts by Nancy Turner as well. These is my Words: The Diary of Sarah Agnes Prine, 1881-1901 (P.S.)

The best book I've read this year!

This book was the One Book Arizona selection for this year. I thought the title was odd, but purchased it anyway. I could not put it down. I was immediately drawn into the world of Arizona's early history, and I was so sad when the book was over. I've since purchased it for all my family members, and my friends who love books.

Funny, entertaining, tender, sad and inspirational!

I love this book so much that I can't bear to think of reading another book just yet. The characters lived, laughed, struggled, loved, breathed, and died around me while I read. The detailed historical authenticity and voice of the novel seemed so real I could not believe it wasn't coming from an actual diary. I instantly fell in love with the main character, Sarah, for her courage, child-like innocence, and down-and-dirty-spunkiness. I could not get enough of Captain Jack Elliot! What a great hero -- ranking right up there with Rhett and Gilbert Blythe as my all time favorites. Their love story was so beautiful and true to life from beginning to end. This book was so funny, so exciting, so tender, and at times so sad I thought I would find a whole in my chest for the aching I felt (as well as the laughing I did). Every time Sarah cried, I cried. Maybe I am so partial to the novel since my ancestors also settled around the same area as Sarah, around the same time. A COMPELLING, BEAUTIFUL read. I will read this one again and again. "A nice girl should never go anywhere without a loaded gun and a big knife."

I wanted to like it more.

And, I actually feel guilty that I don't like it more. It is a Diary of a woman facing hard times. It was just hard to get through as a book, and I actually felt relieved that is was over.

I bought this for my godsons (5 and 7) based on my own fond memories of this work. I remembered the wonderful drawings and the vividly told stories from Greek Mythology and was happy to have passed this along to another generation. Some of the stories require a bit of editing when used as bedtime storytelling ("Why did he marry his sister?"). I plan on getting the Norse Myths collection for Christmas this year.

I really like the way this book is written because each story blends easily into the next. The pictures really help the younger ones to follow along and it makes the myths more enjoyable to read. I bought this to read to my young daughter and she really enjoyed it.

This book was one of the greatest memories of my childhood. I was in kindergarden and my older brother brought it home from the elementary school library, we devoured every picture and every word. Between my brother and I we checked out and re-checked out this book hundreds of times. I loved it so much that we both bought copies of it when we grew up. I am 41 now and read it to my son, he loves it too. This book was originally published in the early sixties, so it's old but wonderful. The author also did a very similar book on Norse Mythology that is equally great...I own that as well.

OH my Goodness, "She Did That" was the best book I have read in a very long time. It is a must read, the wrting was great, reading this book makes you feel as if you are having a true conversation with Bryan Terry. It may not be written in what many may call proper english, it is written in everyday used and listen to language. I recommend this book to be added to everyones libary...

Review Date: 2007-08-22
Kerry E. Wagner author of She Did That, takes Urban Literature to a whole new level. "She Did That" is a story of Bryan Terry, being told over a 10 year period of this mans life. Growing up Houston, TX Bryan Terry resides in a community in which, we looking in from the outside could view as a life full of craziness and dysfunctions. To those living this life...it is just that, Life. Would you title this "Survival in the Hood?" Possibly! This is a passionate recount of the life of a young man and how his choices will have an impact on him for the rest of his life. Bryan Terry fathered children with several women, leaving the question, did he care or have love for any of them? He does accept the fact that the legal system would always be in his life or in his pocket. How does he deal with this issue, is one of the challenges he faces. Living the life of a hustler...playa on the streets, always trying to maintain an image and level of respect. Does Bryan Terry want more?

Mr. Wagner takes you on a rollercoaster ride with this character Bryan Terry. Experiencing how he views woman, loyalty to his family and the need to protect them from the life he has created for himself. Expressing a great respect and admiration for a person not of blood but of his life, Willie D. To the vision of who he would like to be in life and the obstacles he faces to achieve this goal. You will encounter stories of lust, power & control, loyalty, coming to understand his definition of integrity, respect to the desires of love and true commitment.

She Did That is a challenging, thought provoking and realistic view into a life that some of us only experience through a story of this nature. As I finished reading this book, I sat back and looked at my own life. Asking myself, why I made the choices I have, was I true to myself, did I always show integrity and how was my love ones affected by my choices. I know Kerry E. Wagner has several projects in the works and I look forward to future books from this author.

I am an avid reader who typically finishes a book, at the most, in 2 days. It took me so much longer to read She Did That. Not because I didn't like it...quite the opposite. I loved this book! But it was so real and with the drama I was dealing with at the time, hit so very very close to home. I would read it and then stop and digest what I had just read...then usually cry a little...then relate it to either what was going on then or had occured in my past. I felt as if I had known every single one of these people. I had to keep reminding myself that I was reading fiction and not a biography. I loved the way the book moved through this man's life. Because of the casual tone the book was written in, I alternated between feeling like I was in an extended conversation with Mr. Wagner and feeling like I was reading a long, long much treasured letter. I need to know if Bryan Terry got it all together. I so hope so...he is too much like some of the men I have known and cared about it my life...I look forward to the next one...

I am upset that I wasted my money on this book. It was not very well written at all, and the story line does not flow. It jumps from one subject to another quite frequently, with no ties to bind them together. The grammar is hideous. I would like to know who edited this book, and have them fired immediately. My suggestion-do not waste your time on this rag.

I'm one of those people who loves buying and looking through any kind of cookbook. I get cooking magazines too (including Gourmet). But so far, nothing tops this grill book. It is my favorite! And my husband's too. We've had it for several years and have probably made at least half the recipes in it - and they were all so tasty! I even use some recipes for non-grilling ideas. I highly recommend this book for casual grilling and formal entertaining. There's something for everyone.

Here we have one of those rare culinary volumes which is actually helpful, and inside, you'll discover a treasure of grilling knowledge. Clearly, this is the bible for outdoor chefs.

I sort of specialize in gourmet outdoor cooking effecting all techniques including (but not limited to) grilling, smoking, dutch oven, cooking on a spit, and open campfire, utilizing many different woods and devices to achieve my ends. I don't limit my outdoor cooking to meats and barbeque -- I do Chinese, desserts, seafood and all manner of side dishes. You can access many of my recipes here: http://www.recipezaar.com/recipes.php?chef=196369

This book contains very excellent rubs, sauces, and meal recipes that you'll find are difficult to beat -- the methods are quite clear and the book is as useful for the grilling veteran as it is for the newcomer to these skills. I know of no better work on this topic.

Highly recommended!

What's not to like with this classic, original screwball comedy? It still holds up after all this time, and Clark Gable is as sexy as ever with those pervasive dimples and ironic grin.

If you crave some real star quality, some Hollywood [as well as American] history, get this film now. The chemistry between Gable and Colbert makes this movie hum, and compared to the drek we get today both in our "stars" and the scripts, it is a stellar piece of art.

Heartily recommended!

Since ths reviewer seems to be on an "oldies" kick of late, certainly this film has to be included. The movie swept the Oscars for a production of 1934 vintage, and of all the movies made in this era, this one seems to stand up today as best. The opening credits are absolutely childish; one would swear that he or she were about to watch a silent film. End of swearing! Capra's direction flies at the viewer at a lightning pace. Spoiled rich girl Colbert seems as natural as any seasoned actress, and Gable's famed barking quickly turns to love, albeit none too tenderly. The plot is simplistic; no need to embellish a theme repeated hundreds of times. But, just imagine even one short sex scene in a 2008 remake completely ruining the movie. No, the chemistry between the budding lovers is just fine, thank you; even an idiot can tell where this duet is heading. One story, perhaps apochryphal, has Colbert showing up late for the Oscar ceremony, leaving a cabbie waiting outside the theater, running down the aisle, accepting the award , and running back outside jumping into the cab. As Gable had said in the movie: "All you dames are so darned dizzy".

I would recommend this book for anyone looking for straightforward recipes that taste good and aren't too difficult or exotic. This was given to me as a Christmas gift and I have really enjoyed trying out several of the recipes. Everything that I have tried to-date has been good, and some have been truly exceptional. The author seems to have a lot of common sense, but also appears to be an accomplished chef. This has been a perfect recipe book to help me get out of the rut of just grilling chicken and hamburgers and to try some new recipes.

Dinotopia was the first book James Gurney wrote in this series. The artwork was what initially drew me into the story and I found sweatshirts, posters, calendars, pins...you name it, with these chaarcters on them. The storyline was easy to follow, as it was written in diary format.

The things I really found interesting were the song (notes and lyrics) and the code for the Dinotopian written language (footprints). My students love writing letters and stories in Dinotopian to each other and for daily assignments. After teaching it for almost 10 years students are as much in love with the story as I am and they want to read it over and over. The artwork makes for great writing prompts and gives kids ideas for sculpture and watercolor pieces.

You might just end up with "Dinotopia". That's how good the illustrations and paintings in this book are, and should be the primary reason for purchasing the book. The artwork is absolutely first class, and the book can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. I purchased "Dinotopia" in 1992 when it was first released, and subsequently, picked up its sequel "The World Beneath". They both still hold a special place on my book shelf more than 10 years later. HIGHLY recommended!

This book has a lot about dinosaur names and how the dinosaurs lived, even the plants they eat. There are a lot of pictures that can help you to learn to recognize them. It is all very well drawn.

But it has a different perspective because they think of time differently, not as 1 o'clock but as when to do certain things, such as times to harvest.

It is very good realistic fiction because it makes you feel like you are a part of the story. It is written as a journal, kind of like talking to you, which makes the story seem more real.

The plot is very complicated. So it always keeps your attention and keeps you turning the pages. There is not a lot of action, but when there is it is very realistic because you feel the danger and excitment.

Well, parts of the book ARE sad...but other part and inspiring and uplifting. You just have to keep reading till the end. I had a chance to hear the song, "The Spirit of Christmas," that goes with the book: it is wonderful!

This book was in my opinion average at best. Yes it had some sad parts, yes it had some warm parts, but all very expectant. You knew what was coming down the road with every page turned. To me it just wasn't worth the time I spent reading it. You can judge a book by how often you think about it once you've finished it. Does it linger on your mind? Does it strike an emotion in you when you think about it? This book does none of that. Once I finished it and put it down, I never thought about it again. The writing style of the Author felt more like someone that is in high school. No depth. The book was also very short with larger font so it didn't take more than a an hour and half to read.

This is a book of comfort, inspiration, faith...a parable about the rewards of anonymous service...a story of eternal bonds. This story shows how service to others can make a life meaningful, even after the most severe and traumatic of tragidies.

Life can bring you to your knees in despair...but it can also exalt you when you learn what great things can come of everyday kindnesses.

This book has made me really think!

John Allen is a consumate story teller...a modern day Dickens. I contacted HCI Books and they told me John is working on another book that should be completed soon. I cannot wait to read it!

So who reads Christmas books in the summer? I do. I have since I was a kid. Don't ask why...I couldn't tell you. If that makes me crazy, so...I'm crazy.

But I had to take a moment and share my thoughts about "Christmas Gifts, Christmas Voices." This book starts out typical enough: A man is buying Christmas gifts for his family. But a few pages later BANG/WHAM...I won't tell you what happens, but let's just say it's not what you'd expect from a Christmas story.

But it's the ending that realy gets you. And it makes you feel like there's hope for everyone, no matter what.

Allen's book isn't just a great Christmas book. It's a great book...period.

Another book I'd recommend it Richard Siddoway's "A Christmas Wish."

More than just a Christmas book

Why would my friend give me a Christmas book when it wasn't Christmas?

Why?

She knew that I had just suffered a devastating loss. And she explained that "Christmas Gifts, Christmas Voices" was more than a holiday novel...it was a parable that showed how service and thinking of others ultimately brings peace after a loss.

The other book my dear friend gave me had a less perplexing title: "I Wasn't Ready To Say Goodbye" by Brook Noel.
While Allen's book was lyrical and parable-like, Noel's book was filled with straightfoward advice.

Because my friend helped me out so very much by giving these books to me when I needed them most, I wanted, in turn, to tell others about these books. They are wonderful and comforting.

And isn't it interesting: one book that helped me was set during the holiday season, and the other book was written by someone with the name "Noel."
