The Continuation of Black Bartlemy's Treasure
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-07
If you haven't read Black Bartelmy's Treasure, get it first and read it. It ends without resolution for the two main characters and this is the continuation. More than a sequel, it is the second half. See the reviews of the first book. This is more of the same, great well sculpted characters in profusion, mixed with adventure, death, love, passion, and chivalry in the 1700's with pirates, Spanish inquisition, Central American jungles, Myans, battles, survival, shipwrecks in profusion. The best use of 80 cents around. I love Farnol's writing style, reminds me of RL Stevenson's. Martin Conisby is adrift, farther and farther from his love. This follows his adventures, his quest for vengeance against an ancient family enemy, woeful suffering, the consummation of the vengeance that has eaten at him for 6 years. Flight to safety, survival in the jungle, unexpected friends and loyalty at many turns, as well as unexpected death and threat. But: read Black Bartlemy's Treasure first, to really understand what drives Martin and the ghosts of the past that haunt and drive him to near self destruction.

Great starter for Travis style

This book is a terrific introduction to learning to play the Travis style by a second cousin of Travis, and a person intimately familiar with the Muhlenberg county guitar tradition.

Flint will start you off with some basic Travis-style patterns and rolls, and then works into more difficult material. You will learn how to wrap your thumb around the neck, something I'd never tried before. Some of the lessons use snippets from Travis tunes that Flint has worked into new compositions; others, like Thom Bresh's "Barbeque Rag" or "Way down Yonder in New Orleans" are intact songs. Working with this book allowed me to develop far enough along to play several hours worth of tunes and perform solo Travis-style for several years.

The book comes with a CD and is written with notation and tab. Highly recommended.

Mercenaries 5 stars

Mercenaries was by far my favorite impulse d20 buy ever. It has lots of great supplement. It has 9 new races, 10 new classes, a great equipment section, new spells, two chapters on mercenaries as pcs, npcs, and random mercenarie campaign themes. My favorite classes in this book are the Nomad class, which is mostly about skills and learning languages, and the Mercenary ranger. The merc ranger really isnt very differnt than the D&d ranger. The big differance is in the ranger options. Rather than the ranger options being in one specific order you choose what you want to specialize in. So rather than start off with the choice of a combat style at second level you get a ranger option. theirs a list of all sorts of things that you can do in stead. for example you can take spell casting rather than combat style. This book is loaded with supplement and is worth buying.

A collection of ideas with great instructions. The fact that she gives photos and instructions on how to make the miniature beds, linens and quilts makes the book a wonderful find in the miniature world. The instructions are straight forward and easy to follow. A jem of a book!! Found it at the local library and knew it had to be purchased for future use and personal notes.

The methodology is classic. The discussion of the results is poignant. Fans of such classic films as the Shawshank Redemption and the Spitfire Grill may find this study insightful. Anyone who enjoys the hits from REO Speedwagon will undoubtedly be moved. However, if you are interested in Neo-Kohlbergian Moral Judgement Development this study is a must read. I laughed, I cried, but, most importantly, I finally overcame my fear of the little girl who comes out of televisions.

Hooray for Silver Dagger Press which is reissuing the Sheila Travis mysteries. In this first of the series originaly published in 1988, Travis, a recent 40ish widow, comes to Chicago and the pretigious Markham Graduate School that trains future diplomats. Sheila is well qualified for her job as assistant to the president of Markham because her husband was in the diplomatic service in Japan and she served as his excellent hostess over their married years.
At Markham she is quickly tossed into a murder investigation when the body of a young woman is found in the library stacks at the institute. Suspects include not only the staff but visiting professors and an interesting group of grad students from very different backgrounds.
Sheila vows to keep clear of the investigation but her redoubtable Aunt Mary, a VERY Southern dowager and truly
delightful person, keeps urging her to dig in, despite the fact that Mike Flannagan of the Chicago Police, with an eye for Sheila, keeps reminding her to butt out. Another murder soon occurs for which Sheila feels some responsibility and her investigative skills soon are at full force.
In the end, Sheila gathers the suspects together in a large room (a throwback to the traditional mysteries of the 30's and 40's) and comes up with the solution.
Anyone who enjoys traditional mysteries with a very likable heroine will love the Shelia Travis series. Numer two, MURDER IN THE CHARLESTON MANNER is due for reissue in January.

skateboarders diverse opinions about authority

Review Date: 2007-08-27
While some may say I am too close to the project to review it, I think, as a contributing author to this compilation in my first published effort, I feel I have been validated enough as a writer to feel qualified to pen this...while I get my 4 pages of fame in this feature, I am accompanied by hilarious and poignant essays from the likes of Marc Johnson, Karl Watson, Anthony Pappalardo and the like, as well as skateboard industry giants (Jim Gray) and magazine writers (Rob Brink, Bob Kronbauer.) Illustrated by the incomparable Dale Dreiling, his illustrations perfectly encapsulate the stories...my essay was entitled "Flipping the Script", named by Chris Long, the publisher, as I was unaware a title was needed, and displayed an attitude of uncommon respect for the authorites I have run across in my 19 years on a skateboard, and I explained why my interactions ended without as much peril as is usually encountered. So this isn't just a "F tha police" compendium of grumbling from disaffected skate youth, it shows a variety of well thought out opinions from a group that is now getting a lot of attention for their physical skills, but now are showing their intellectual sides, skateboarding having introduced them to the concepts of creative expression and individual opionion. These skateboarders and writers have nailed it...most readers will be surprised at the intelligence and wit of the loose band of street urchins that make up this highly entertaining compilation...it's also nice to know that 8th graders in Arkansas can now quote me as a pivotal perspective opionion in a skateboarding harassment essay and I can help the lil' bugger get an A for a change...happy reading, any parent looking to understand their rebellious young skater must purchase this book!!!

Observations on Florid Song is a fine collection of items on baroque singing, and baroque music in general. It is almost all text, and there are very few music examples. While I was initially disappointed at the lack of music examples, the quality of the concise text made up for any shortcomings.
