This book would appeal to the young person who has the time and a little money to tour Ireland staying at hostels and trying out pubs. It's a fun book to read and you do learn a little about Ireland too.

This book was fun, interesting and very well written. To read a book about Ireland that does not have the troubles as its main subject matter is refreshing. The author does a great job of relating Irish culture to the reader. The author even goes as far as to write the peoples dialects into the book, so that when you are reading the book, you can get a sense of the softness of the language.

I would recommend this title to anyone that wants to learn a bit about Ireland. I would especially recommend this to all those of Irish decent.

The subtitle of this book tells you what this Irish travel book is all about. And that is what drew me to it.

Contents:
The first round
Dublin on tap
Beer and politics
Blood is thicker than Guinness
Love at first pint
Pub town
Heading north
The holy mountain
A land of pubs and poets
Last drinks

Australian, Evan McHugh, travels to Ireland to meet some friends. On the ferry over to Dublin from Wales, he and his travelling companion "Twidkiwodm" (the-woman-I-didn't-know-I-would-one-day-marry), aka Michelle, have their first Guinness. It was not a very good experience (but it sure was funny to read). Debarking, they are told that the Guinness served on the ferry is about the worst in the world. Their friends take them to a couple of pubs in Dublin, including the Guinness Factory Tour. Whilst sitting in a Dublin pub, they are told that the best Guinness is found on west side of Ireland. Off they go, looking for the best Guinness and the result is Pint Sized Ireland: In Search of the Perfect Guinness.

Travelling cheaply, hitchhiking and sleeping in hostels, McHugh provides a wonderful travelogue of Ireland. That he is looking for the "perfect Guinness" makes this even sweeter. Travelling from town to town, asking about the best Guinness, experiencing some of Ireland's best (but maybe not so well known) sites, and picking up books from local writers (Yeats is one). Interspersed throughout the book, McHugh includes words from the writers to explain some of his experiences. It adds a lot to the book.

This book really makes me want to visit Ireland. No matter where he goes, be it Dublin, Westport, Sligo, or Belfast, the people are friendly, kind, and humorous. At each stop, either the barman or someone in the pub tells McHugh where he can find the best pint of Guinness (hint: it is always somewhere else). It is in a pub in Belfast, his last stop, where a patron begins to tell him where he can find the best pint. Stopping the man, McHugh tells him where you can find the best Guinness in Ireland. He drank for free the rest of the evening. Yes, the answer was that good, that true. And after reading this book, I agree (if you ask, I will tell you where).

An excellent travelogue, especially if you love "moother's milk."

Slainte!

Classic, funny, and dead on...

A friend of mine tipped me to a book that immediately caught my interest... Pint-Sized Ireland: In Search of the Perfect Guinness by Evan McHugh. Having spent a little time in Ireland for a software conference, I find myself drawn to the country, people, and customs. Evan McHugh made me feel like I was right back there. And I haven't read something this funny in quite awhile...

Contents: The first round; Dublin on tap; Beer and politics; Blood is thicker than Guinness; Love at first pint; Pub town; Heading north; The holy mountain; A land of pubs and poets; Last drinks

So the framework of the story is that Evan and his traveling companion (who was to become his wife) decide to travel over to "Oirland" to meet up with a couple of friends. Knowing that there would be plenty of drinking (it *is* Ireland!) of Guinness, he felt that it was necessary to acquire a taste for the dark beverage. On the ferry over, they start their training. It does *not* go well. His description of "moother's milk" leads you to believe that mother is none too well. As expected, a stop at a pub is the first order of business once they meet their friends. This Guinness goes down better, which starts the discussion as to where you can find the "perfect Guinness". So as they travel the island via train, hitchhiking, and hostels, the question is always asked... where can I find the perfect Guinness? And it's always "somewhere else". Along the way, you meet traveling companions, colorful locals, and more pubs than you ever imagine existed. And at the end, McHugh does find the answer to where the perfect Guinness can be found. And it's a classic...

While it sounds like this book is all about beer, it's really something much better. It's a travel diary of sorts, written by someone who has a real knack for capturing the color and flavor of the culture. In many instances, he writes the Irish dialogue as it sounds. So when they are visiting their first pub, he tells his friends they had a Guinness coming over on the ferry. The reply is classic. "Oh, you shouldn'ta doon that. It's fookin' shite, that's why. Now get that into ya. We've a lotta poobs ahead of us." After spending time with my friends over there, I know that would have been the EXACT reply I would have received, using the EXACT same words. :)

If you're at all interested in Irish culture, this is a must read. Think of it as a way to understand the openness of the Irish people, and how in a "poob" you're never a stranger...

Poor Tom is Cold is a historical fiction that is more of a mystery. In the book the main character is Detective Murdoch. He is investigating a case in which his fellow worker and friend was killed. The police say that it was a suicide and call it a closed case but Murdoch knows that Oliver is not the type of person who would commit suicide. Oliver was found in an abandoned house all alone with a gun and a note saying that he killed him self. Next to the house were oliver was found much more is going on. Next store a lady named Mrs. Eakin is being claimed to be insane by her family. And it just so happens that she is blaming her son for a murder. Through out the book it also shows raisism to towards the chinese as well as the mentally insane. "Poor Tom is Cold" takes place in Toronto, Canada in the 1980's. I liked this book and would recommend this to any one who likes a good mystery.

Police Constable Wicken is dead--an apparent suicide. Still, Acting Detective Murdoch feels that things don't fit. Who was the woman who so conveniently testified about Wicken's broken heart? And what possible connection could Wicken's death have with the nearby home--a home where Peg Eakin has apparently taken leave of her senses in a paranoid fit?

Two things make POOR TOM IS DEAD stand out from the crowd. Murdoch and the fine turn of the (previous) century detail. Murdoch is a human character, fully rendered. His toothache is a nice detail, his frustrated love for his neighbor adds both human interest and historical detail about the then-current chasm between religion and class. Author Maureen Jennings has obviously researched her history--the details of police procedure, treatment of the insane, and class/race distinctions ring true. Better, she integrates these details into her novel so subtly that I didn't feel lectured to.

Emmons and Thomas convert the "Tennis Technique" to a singer's manual for mental stamina. My favorite aspect of this book is the charts. There are charts to help you schedule, program, and maintain mental, physical, and emotional stamina throughout your practicing, preparation, and performance. The book contains many appendices that contain helpful reminders, charts, and tips for singers who teach and those who just perform. Using minimum to no scientific language, Emmons and Thomas communicate the importance of having a power performance by aiding the singer/teacher in "starting from scratch" to build up to the utmost potential of performance. Using techniques and advice from Olympians and teachers of singing, the witty language and motivating advice can help lead anyone to success.

A must for serious singers / perfomers

This is a very good book. The area of the mental side of singing and performing is really paid too little attention to. There are so many books about singing technique etc. At last a good book on this subject! After having read only a few pages, it helped me already. The book is giving me very helpfull practical tips about selfconfidence on stage etc. The only thing is, that the English which is being used, is not so easy to read as in most American literature (I'm from Holland). But the positive thing about that is that I am increasing my English vocabulary...

This is a book with very down-to-earth advice. What amazed me most was that the most things I had always felt about performance, but didn't know how to put in words, are voiced accurately, objectively, concisely and fulfillingly in this book. Also, many things I had never stopped to think about are also dealt with nicely. You will learn how to make the most of performance problems, their sources and consequences in order to help you perform well. There is great joy awaiting you in this book. You will never regret buying it. Buy it. Buy it. Once more: buy it!

I am a professional trumpet player. This book is the centerpiece of a long list of reading material I've culled ideas from over the years. NOT FOR SINGERS ONLY! All musicians can benefit from this book! The book challenges the reader to think and to act. It is not a book you can read passively. If you work carefully through the charts and teaching points you will be rewarded with performances you enjoy giving and ones that audiences will enjoy hearing! Simply put, you'll get out of it what you put into it.

This is the book that all others will be judged against. It leaves "Inner Game" in the dust!

Help for All Performers

The techniques in this book are applicable and a "must have" for any kind of performer, though directed specifically toward classical singers. Whether you are an opera singer, a rock & roller, an actor, an instrumentalist, a public speaker, etc., you can benefit from practicing "power performance". It doesn't come easily. There is a lot of ground-work that you must do to fully benefit, but you will find practical tools to use along your journey, even before completing the book. In my opinion, it's a much more thorough discovery process than found in "The Inner Game of Music", though along the same lines. Definitely worth the investment.

A very exciting journey of a life led by prayer. Dr. Schuller proves that prayer works as he writes on his experience in the achievements. His testimony should bring encouragement to those who pray and have faith in a God that listens and answers prayers. I found this book very encouraging and would commend it to all as a testament to one man's walk with God.

Powerful Book!

Dr. Schuller tells us his passion has been and remains to help people who are hurting. He sees prayer as an adventure, a mystery which connects us with God. He points out that one of the things that is unique about humans created in God's image, is that unlike other created beings, we can dream. Consider his creative description of Jesus: "my hero--the greatest adventurer of all time." Jesus is a role model for all Christians, in addition to being our Savior and Lord!

Prayer is presented in such a powerful, yet simple way in the opening paragraph of the first chapter when he tells us, "Prayer is all about possibilities. About dreams. About faith."

Talk about "California Dreaming"...Dr. Schuller does in a very profound way. I love what he says. "I fell in love with the mountains. The ocean. Palm trees." God answered his prayer and sent him to California.

My copy of this book is extensively marked. I have portions underlined and comments written in the margins. It is such a powerful discussion of prayer, dreams, God-given direction. It comes from a man who has lived it. Faith, the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. By it the elders obtained a good report. In this book Dr. Schuller will feed your faith.

A GREAT BOOK FOR ANYONE OF ANY AGE

You learned the tough times that Mr. Schuller went through and how his faith in God helped him through many obstacles and how it can do the same for you. You learn how he created the Hour of Power television series and the different levels of pray. I would highly recommend this book to read.

Believe it or not, I had been moved to tears over five times (my personal record) by this medium length book. I had read many christian books and written tens of related reviews here. By far this is the best, or should I say the most productive one for my faith. Even if you had read other books written by Schuller or biographies of Schuller before (which I did), you would still be fascinated by this autobiography.

p.s. This is my shortest review here on Amazon to show my sincerest respect and appreciation of the book. Thanks to the Lord my God for granting me the chance to read it. Dont miss it.

What is prayer? Why do we pray? Is all prayer the same? These are questions that many people do not know, or maybe do not even wonder about, yet it is so important. All Christians pray, or ought to, and this book explains the basics of it. Whether you feel a need to enhance your prayer life, or whether you are just curious about what you never were taught on the subject, this book makes an excellent read. I believe this book would be greatly beneficial for any Christian. It is filled with scriptural references throughout, as well as references to other sources such as the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and others by Dubay. It reads very fast, and one may feel inclined to read more on the subject, but the book gives you all you need to get going in the right direction, which is the most important thing. Very orthodox, by an expert on prayer, this book is a great read for Catholics. It would undoubtedly be of great use to protestants as well.

This book is intended for the intelligent person who considers him/herself a beginner in prayer. It introduces the various types of prayer in a very understandable manner. Those who are familiar with Thomas DuBay already know that he is a wholehearted Christian who does not let society set the bar for his teachings. Those who are interested in persuing the Christian life with vigor should pick up this book or "Happy Are You Poor," another very thought provoking book.

Circle of Honor, by Carol Umberger, is an exciting historical novel based on the Scottish struggle for independence in the 1290's. It is the first of a series of four novels which follow the times of Robert the Bruce, his family and supporters. The novel is written from a strong Christian viewpoint and is inspirational as well as suspensfully entertaining. We need more novels of this calibre!

The Price of Freedom picks up where Circle of Honor left off during the struggles for Scottish independence in the 14th century.

Black Bryan Mackintosh is sent to capture an estate loyal to the English. He finds Kathryn de Lindsay, a young unwed mother, in charge of the keep.

Kathryn is intrigued by the formidable warrior, but she keeps her distance because of a secret she carries. She cannot let him know she had a baby while she was still unwed. Ironically, Bryan is the illegitimate son of the Scottish king. As they learn to trust each other, they both find healing from the past.

This was a very entertaining read and I'll look forward to reading the 3rd book in the series. Bryan and Kathryn are wonderful characters and the author uses them effectively to show that God can extend forgiveness to any who ask and He will always bring something good out of something bad.

I bought this Bible two years ago and I love it. It has an appealing cover (and lots of people do judge books that way!). And the inside is truly amazing. It presents the Word of God in a way that makes teenagers want to read this Bible, whether they don't really know the Lord or they already have an awesome walk with Christ. The inserts (Promise, He, You, What if, etc) are great and they help students understand the Bible better. The 10 Challenges and Chacteristics of World Changers are awesome, too. The only problem is this Bible would have been better in an NIV or NRSV version. Still, the CEV is clear and easy to understand. Definately get this Bible for a teenager or adult!

I ordered this bible for my 14 year old son who is in confirmation class. He has an NRSV gift bible which he was struggling with. I have the Learning Bible in the CEV edition which I teach bible from and most people I work with find the CEV very refreshing.
The Promise Bible adds all of the cool stuff that student bibles like the Life Application and others have, but it is easier to comprehend than even the NIV which is important for those first studying the bible. I think the CEV also does a better job of keeping with the meaning of the scripture than the bibles I had as a kid like the Good News bible. The research for the CEV is very strong and compares strongly with most commentaries.
I think this is a good bible for teens and a good version for all of us who have a little trouble with the kings english.

When you need physical property data, and you don't have exact information; this book provides best available estimations of the physical properties. It has been a great help to me, over the years.

Having worked on a piece of an earlier edition, as a grad student at U of Mo - Rolla; where Bruce Poling was a professor, I know how much work it is putting this together for the industries. My hats off to Bruce and his co-authors, and especially to Nanci, his wife, for doing yoman's work on this 5th edition of a classic!

If you are a chemical engineer and do not own this text, you will have a hard time. This text covers all physical properties of organic, and some inorganic, gases and liquids. It offers complete theoretical development and practical equations which are amenable to spreadsheets and numerical analysis. Particularly useful is a comparison at the end of every topic showing the accuracy of each method in predicting a property. Presented in tabular form, it allows the reader to choose a method which is sufficient for his/her needs. You may decide to choose a method that is less accurate but easier to program. Every chemical engineer should have this text. My only regret is that we did not have time in undergraduate to use this text. I learned its value from watching the graduate students.

If this review was helpful, please say so. Thanks.

I was a bit unconfortable when I bought this book since I was suspicious that this one was one of those unreadable thermodynamic books. Fortunately I was wrong. This book provides you with a complete treatment of the properties of gases and liquids in a plain language stressing the understanding of the basic laws governing the behavior of liquids and gases instead of the mathematic that goes with it. The treatment of the topics is very suitable for engineers since it allows quick understanding of the phenomena and provides a wealth of correlations and methods for estimating properties. The appendixes contain all kind of basic information indeed helpful for applying the correlations showed. Without any hesitation, this book is well worth its price.

Unique Story About Pre-Revolutionary Boston

An intriguing read for teens--and perhaps their parents--about pre-Revolution Boston. Seventeen-year-old Rachel Winslow takes on the ghostly guise of her great-aunt Regina Silsby to fight the British acts of tyranny. She tricks British soldiers, frees prisoners, and confounds a certain spoiled redcoat captain, leaving Boston believing that Regina's spirit truly haunts the city. In the mean time, while she tromps around as the ghost of her great-aunt, Rachel wonders what the truth is about the real Regina Silsby. Was Regina a witch, as the gossips say--or a devoted Christian? Did she practice things darker than the organ in King's Chapel, or was she simply pouring out her soul to God through music as she mourned her dead fiance? Rachel investigates and discovers that all the superstitions of the townspeople are for nothing. Regina Silsby was a godly young woman who died a tragic death. Rachel sees the damage to a person's reputation that idle gossip about the supernatural can do, and she rejects the untruthful stories. However, Rachel is left with another problem--a spoiled British captain is determined to make the so-called ghost pay for humiliating him....

Regina Silsby's Secret War is a young adult novel that greatly impressed me as a reader and reviewer. With its realistic language and situations, this book is one I highly recommend. Rachel's reliance on God's guidance before making the important decisions she had to make was inspiring. Mr. Brodeur brings the pre-Revolutionary time period to life in this novel, and I also highly recommend its sequel, Regina Silsby's Phantom Militia, which continues Rachel's story further. She brings along a companion ghost from the grave in the sequel, adding to the excitement and danger. I also personally think these two novels would make a great movie that would be a wholesome choice for teens.

Confound it!!! What a great story!

The Old English or King's English or English or whatever it is, the style of the language, was great fun to read at the beginning. Then, you get to know the setting, Boston in the 1700s. Neat details about daily life in that time keep your interest. For example, Rachel (the protagonist) is outside in the cold doing laundry in a tub or fetching firewood.

Then you get to know all the characters. There are great characters. Rachel and her family are the good guys. There is a British soldier who moves into their house. Him and his troops are the bad guys. There's townsfolk, a cemetary, horses, ships, a ghost, knife throwing... all kinds of cool stuff to make a great adventure!

Then, at the end, the adventure unfolds. Like great historical fiction does, the story is intertwined with real life events; the Boston Tea Party, the American Revolution.

I must say I was a bit worried that this book would be a snooze fest since it is "Christian Fiction for Young Readers". Boy, was I surprised! It is simply a great adventure story with fun on EVERY page.

This book is a must-read and must-have for any reader's collection. It is set in the Boston Tea Party-period, and Rachel Winslow is the very likable heroine who has a clever plan of disguising herself as a ghost...but I will not give it all away, you must read the book for yourself.

The writing is so elaborate, you feel as if you were really there in the story, thanks to the vivid expressions, imager, and vocabulary.

You will really enjoy this book if buy it, so get your copy today!

I recently read "Regina Silsby's Secret War" as a primer to reading it with my 10 year old daughter and got hooked!! The vocabulary is rich, the pace is fast, and the entire story is extremely believable and engaging. My 10 year old daughter is now reading it and is thrilled with the antics and courage of Rachel, the main character. She's also excited about how well the plot ties in with her recent history lessons about the Boston Tea Party, Stamp Act, Quartering Act and the other Intolerable Acts. Kudos to Thomas Broduer for an extremely well written book that's fun to read for kids and adults!

Haunting book of color photographs reflecting life in death.

William Greiner is definitely an artist to watch! This book is wonderful! The color photographs are haunting and the presentation honors a most memorable subject - graves and memorials to dead. Not just any dead people - but those quirky graves of New Orleans and vicinity are photographed here. The setting often combines the commonplace with the ethereal. A brillant theme photographed by a genuis at capturing the unusual around us. It's really a wonderful book to own and display.

Small Models of the Barren Earth

To capture the ironies, poignancies, and soulful idiosyncrasies of the grave sites pictured in this book, William Greiner spent several years traversing the cemeteries of New Orleans and South Louisiana....Despite Greiner's obvious debt to William Eggleston, who is often cited as the father of modern color photography, his photographs stand out as originals. The compositions are provocative, and he renders garish colors into a lushly seductive palette..... Mr. Greiner's small, Louisiana-style models of the barren earth combine with Thomas Lynch's elegant foreward to make The Reposed a fascinating book. Nov/Dec 1999

A fine color portrait of common places.

William Greiner's first monograph is a welcome selection of photographs from his many years of work in color. Greiner's view of the world, mainly in his native Louisiana, is alternately witty, tender and rhetorical. THE REPOSED is a book that the viewer will want to look at again and again.

If one picture is worth a thousand words, then this book is worth sixty two thousands words to describe the surreal photographs. Definitely not enough room here to convey what I think is a remarkable look at cemeteries in and around New Orleans. William Greiner is a genius with a camera, who has taken the cemetery photograph and made it into a haunting, beautiful work of art.

If you only buy one photography book in your lifetime, this is it. Nobody has ever said so much with pictures about a dead subject.
