I read this book in the late 1970's`and have never forgotten it! It is such a haunting story. I actually found Nancy Groover Thomas' father and talked to him via telephone. I often wonder where Terry Thomas is and what he ended up doing after the accident.

If anyone knows what happend or where he is, please email me [...] I highly reccomend this book!

I read this book in one sitting, it was so compelling I could not put it down. It had been on the book shelf of my house for years though I had never seen it. I am only 16 years old and I picked up the book one day attracted to the title and its somehow grasping theme 'love'. I was moved to tears in every way physically, mentally and spiritually. I would recommend this book to anyone old enough to understand its concept and the reality of a tradgic love story.

I first read this book in the early 70's but just recently read it again. It is a book that I certainly want to keep in our library. This shows just how special the marriage relationship is in God's eyes. This is a story of a couple who were "sold out for Jesus" and also shows how God works in our everyday lives. God blesses those who keep themselves pure until marriage. I have often wondered where and how God was using Terry in building up His kingdom since the accident.

You'll never forget it.

I read this book when I was a young teen. This story has stayed with me my whole life, I am now 50. I grew up in So. Calif. and moved to Georgia in 1986. I never believed that I would end up close to where Nancy went to college. I have always wanted to know what she looked like, so this past month my husband went with me to Wesleyan College and we looked her up in the Yearbook. What an awesome experience, to walk where she walked! I know that might sound a little over the top, but this book has always been close to my heart.

If you never read another book, you must read "At Least We Were Married".

I read this book when I was in the Fourth grade. You are probablly wondering why such a young girl grabbed ahold of this wonderful book. Well Terry Thomas is my Step Father. Once I read this book it showed me that love really does exist and some people take it for granted. I have listened to Terry tell me the story of him and Nancy many times. Everytime I hear it my heart aches. I hope when people read this book they understand life can get a lot worse. I definantly think this book should come back to print!

I found this book very, very helpful and informative. I purchased this book when I was stage managing my first musical (community theatre) and read through it again before the last show I did. I have only stage managed three shows so far, but thanks to what I learned in this book I received a great compliment - Thanks for your work, you were so professional, I look forward to working with you again. This is a must have for a stage manager. I feel that as I progress and do more (including hopefully professional jobs someday) I can continue to refer to this book and hone my skills.

Very informative... ish

As a recent graduate with a BFA in stage management, I have found Kelly's book to the the most in depth look at the craft. It addressed more complicated issues, and most interestingly, new developments, that the other books I've read(Stern, Ionazzi) don't touch on. I agree that it isn't a book for a beginner, but for someone with a little experience, looking to refine their skills, its the best book out there.

This is the best book on theatrical stage management currently available, for the money. It is well written, well organized, and very comprehensive. Kelly's approach to stage management is outstanding and he communicates it in a clear and interesting manner in the book.

Besides, being such a good book, it is priced very well. The only books that are comparable in content cost at least three times as much.

A must have for everyone seriously interested in stage managing.

From the minute I picked this book up it has become my "bible". Chock full of helpful tips and funny stories of the author's experiences as a stage manager. Not overly technical - with lots of helpful forms to smooth the way for a production (and the stage manager's nerves)! Have it with you through every show - before, during, after. Bravo! Encore!

The Believer's Study Bible is the best Study Bible that I have ever had the privilege to use. The book introductions, study notes, and charts are most helpful in clarifying things that might otherwise be difficult to understand. I've shared information from this Bible with students in my Sunday Bible Study Class. I've given this Bible as gifts to friends and to my husband, who is a pastor. All agree that this book contains a wealth of good, useful information that is normally found only in reference books. I have used other Study Bibles, but always return to The Believer's Study Bible. In fact, my own Bible is well worn and in need of a new binding.

I strongly urge Nelson to bring back this Bible. There is none that can compare to its quality in information anywhere!

As a psychotherapist, I can't tell you how important i believe Hillman's contribution to the field of psychology is. His championing of the soul, it's intricacies and shadows, it's necessity as the form that formless spirit coolly appreciates, is an healing offfering for the spirit/matter split of modern consciousness. Read this book, and prepare to be amazed.

Always provocative and challenging, Hillman is one of today's greatest thinkers in my opinion. This is a solid introduction to his ideas edited by one of his biggest fans. If you haven't read Hillman, this is a good place to start. Hillman can be a little hard to read, so these short excerpts make it a bit more manageable. I also highly recommend Inter-Views, a series of conversations with Laura Pozzo and We've Had A Hundred Years of Therapy (and the World's Getting Worse)-conversations and letters betweem Hillman and Michael Ventura. These last two works are Hillman at his most readable.

This book can be consumed as a full course meal. For example, read a chapter like "The Salt of Soul, the Sulfur of Spirit," and there is enough material to feel full for several hours as you digest the many metaphors, and delicious word play. For a snack, Hillman provides "Recipes", little snippets to be consumed in the morning or before going to bed.If consumed before bed, one's dreams may be seeded by an ever-expanding Hillman metaphor. Bon Appetit.

A drumfire of images and imagination enchanting the souls depth

In "A Blue Fire" Thomas Moore took long citations of the apparently rich collection of James Hillman's publications and rearranged them to topics. Each topic is introduced by him. The citations gain a strong rhythm that draws you in. This is probably due to Moore himself. Therefore I have the impression that Moore is more of an author than an editor of this beautiful book.

This excellent book has some prerequisites. It is a strong help to be somewhat fluent in Jungian thinking and terminology. The level of the English (and the other implied languages) is quite high. You might get along with less, but that is hard work. Also you certainly do not want to read it, if you are in a psychical unstable mood. The book is emotional and intellectual quite challenging.

The content of the book is difficult to communicate. But maybe the attitude and way of dealing with the subconscious is more important. Here the authors make a strong claim that it is important to feed the soul. Images are the core. Healing is a secondary activity. The primary activity is to befriend oneself with the internal images and consequently with the soul.

Thoughtful and engaging. It gives pause for reflection.

"Blue Fire" is an anthology of selections from James A. Hillman's major works, including "Insearch: Psychology and Religion," "Suicide and the Soul," "Healing Fiction," and others, including journal and magazine articles in such diverse publications as "Spring," "Utne Reader," "Institute Newsletter," and "Loose Ends: Primary Papers in Archetypal Psychology." This should not scare you away. On the contrary, the reader will find that "Blue Fire" is quite readable and understandable. The selections in this book challenge you to think. Thomas More (editor) did an excellent job in assembling and introducing the selections in the book, tying them together so that they show a logical continuity of thought. If you read "Psychology Today," you should have no trouble with this book. You will find it delightful. If you have a deeper interest in 'depth psychology,' Jungian Psychology, or archetypal psychology, you will find this an excellent read.

Hillman's approach to psychology is one of addressing the individual as an individual within a society, paying strict attention to the needs of that individual and his/her soul. Psychology is not treating mental disorders and symptoms of such disorders, it is caring for the soul. Much of what can be accomplished is a transformation of the soul symbolically through the use of imagination, poetry, symbolism, and metaphor. "Blue Fire" was an epiphany for me. It caused me to look at many things from a different prospective. I found a new appreciation for spirituality and soulfulness, as well as the need to accept others and myself.

The Book of Five Rings is similar to Sun Tzu Art of War in that is discusses strategy, fighting, and competition from a combat perspective. The book is small in size and easy for reading while traveling. While references can found that comment this is as a book for management, it is still very much a book about combat and the samurai warrior. Interesting nontheless.

This really is a great book. It contains a philosophical outlook on dealing with people and sword fighting/combat from hundreds of years ago, but it really translates very well into today's modern business world. Everyone could learn something from this old samurai who lived in 18th century. I highly recommend this book and the book Understanding: Train of Thought to everyone.

Business and Martial Arts

Review Date: 2008-01-30

The book written by the samurai warrior Miyamoto Musashi circa 1645 is considered a classic treatise on military strategy, and it enjoys an audience considerably broader than only that of martial artists: for instance, some business leaders find its discussion of conflict and taking the advantage to be relevant to their work.

The term "Ichi School", which is referred to in the book, Go Rin No Sho, when referring to such books, refers to "Niten No Ichi Ryu", or "Ni Ten Ichi Ryu", which literally translated, means "Two Swords, one heaven".

Throughout the book it is clear: what is primary for Musashi is The Goal, while the means of achieving the goal are secondary. He wrote "According to this Ichi school, you can win with a long weapon, and yet you can also win with a short weapon. In short, the Way of the Ichi school is the spirit of winning, whatever the weapon and whatever its size."

The same is in business: the leaders who are attracted by the goal rather than by embellishments are the true leaders. For example, the dot-com bubble of 2000 was caused by the managers who forgot about the primary goal of the business: net income. Those who were obsessed by their stock prices regarding of massive losses and the lack of revenue became bankrupt. They put attention to the fancy office buildings and furniture rather than to the assets that generate earning. Musashi wrote about it: "Just as a horse must have endurance and no defects, so it is with weapons. Horses should walk strongly, and swords and companion swords should cut strongly. Spears and halberds must stand up to heavy use: bows and guns must be sturdy. Weapons should be hardy rather than decorative".

Musashi also encourages to maintain a balance of your skills throughout your life. This balance could be thought of as Yin and Yang. The balance is to be neither over-familiar with something nor under-familiar. The over-familiarity or over-use of one weapon is not recommended by Musashi, as it would be seen to reveal your spirituality to your enemy, and thus your boisterousness, or over-calm. The over-familiarity makes you stick to a conviction. This is a very important for the business. Take, for example, mr. Warren Buffet.

A quality standing out about Mr. Buffett is his ability to morph. If you read his materials from the 1960s, he said very different things than in the 1970s and early-1980s. Early on he was buying dirt-cheap stocks by simple statistical standards and typically smaller stocks (smallcap), later he bought "franchises", then he entered a period of buying great managements of big companies and being a long-term holder, then, amazingly, he was buying smaller things dirt cheap again just as value came back into play as the twenty-first century began. He tactically morphed steadily over the decades. Trying to freeze his tactics from any decade and replicate them in the next few would never have led you to his actual actions. Musashi wrote about that this way: "You should not have a favourite weapon. To become over-familiar with one weapon is as much a fault as not knowing it sufficiently well. You should not copy others, but use weapons which you can handle properly. It is bad for commanders and troops to have likes and dislikes."

WARRIORS BIBLE

Review Date: 2008-04-29
Musashi, like every great warrior, knew that strategy was as important as tactics and techniques in combat. This book will teach you things that were learned in combat and will enhance your survival potential on the battlefield, street and life.

It is not the easiest book to interpret and understand, but that hardly matters, as for the information in this book is worth your time and effort. One good book is worth a hundred crummy ones, and this book is one outstanding book. This book is divided into various distinct sections, and the serious and professional warrior should extract as much information as possible from each section. Every time I pick this book up I learn something new. This is the warrior's bible.

I highly recommend this book to all readers.

"Ten Hut!!" -- The Leader's Toolbox

Review Date: 2008-02-07
Author Joe Franklin makes a compelling case that leadership is as much "caught as taught." That it, you probably can't learn it just by reading books. A former West Pointer, he sees the US Military Academy as an ultimate laboratory for grooming leaders and it is hard to argue with that.

Each chapter focuses on one aspect of leadership. Critics may chide that it sounds like a list of Boy Scout virtues. Real world examples - sometimes a bit too self-congratulatory - illustrate the points that Franklin develops.

Mostly we know what it takes to be a good leader. The kicker is doing it! No book can do that for you but Franklin's book is a motivational and instructive blast for those who are looking to hone their leadership skills in any arena - government, military, business, private life, whatever. A worthwhile book!

The foreword by General Norman Schwarzkopf is impressive!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-28
The foreword by General Norman Schwarzkopf is impressive (I would have put his name on the cover) and the author's declaration that, "everything I have accomplished and learned, successes earned and disappointments endured--can be traced back to my days at West Point" alerts readers, right from the start where this book is going. What surprised me--having known a few generals in my time--is the candor with which Major General Joseph P. Franklin, former Commandant of the Corps of Cadets at West Point, writes this. Who will benefit from it and why, is the broader question.

As an entrepreneur and author of a book on marketing, I know that business leaders don't take the time they should to read. When they do it is books with bulleted points, single page self-evaluations and faddish, over-simplified directives. One of the best ever, "In Search of Excellence," benefited from in-depth analysis of what worked in a variety of existing corporations. Here we are limited to Franklin's service experiences and the one or two top-level executive positions he has held since retirement. Would a young buck scrambling up the corporate ladder in these Enron/WorldCom days ask, "What are we doing...and why are we doing it?" or rather, "How can I get more, faster?"

I don't doubt the General's earnestness for a moment, only wish our politicians and current military leaders would at least appear to practice what he says. For example, while discussing honor he states: "What if there's a problem and they (company leaders) are asked to cover it up? The right person to step up to leadership will always answer: 'If that's the case, don't ask me to be in charge.'"

The chapter on "Faith" was the hardest for me to swallow. I understand what the General means when he says, "Those dedicated volunteers and their leaders (in Iraq) have two choices: they can be bitter and question their service and the leadership above them, or they can faithfully serve their leaders our country, and the assignments given them." It would be hard to follow someone who you didn't believe had faith in the mission and faith does play the major role in controlling fear, but as a Vietnam vet, I have to say, "yes, but..." And maybe he heard me because the next chapter begins with the quote: "It takes real courage to admit you're wrong."

On the other hand his chapter on "Compassion" reveals the man as well as the true meaning of leadership. His distinction between leadership and management is also useful. (There are callouts throughout the book that reinforce its message. Someone--probably the publisher--marked each of these with three stars. Their content stands on its own without an appeal to rank and, anyway, shouldn't it be two stars for a major general?) But talk about putting your money where your mouth is. Franklin's decision to measure the high radiation levels of a nuclear power plant at the Greenland ice cap by himself rather than put a subordinate in danger is truly inspirational.

My neighbor would love this book (in fact I am giving my copy to him). For years he owned a bakery and managed young workers. He also reads history and is very active in church work. Anyone who has had to make decisions that affect others but has afterwards ruminated long and hard about their consequences will gain perspective through chapters on duty, honor, faith, courage, perseverance, confidence, approachability, adaptability and compassion. Those are the ten principles Franklin discusses. Like Albert Schweitzer, the General believes "Ethics is our way of being human." That's a lesson not only for leaders but for the whole world. And we need to learn it now.

Insightful frameworks for an effective PSO

This book is absolutely the best! It provides frameworks to structure and implement an effective professional services organization (PSO) for an IT product vendor. A product company PSO matures over time through various phases characterized by the types of services it offers. This book is full of practical yet winning strategies and tactics to maneuver the high risk waters of professional services. There are clear directions on how to manage key levers that increase profitability but it also sets realistic expectations. Although the book provides the `recipe' for a sample $100 million professional services organization, it lists all the necessary `ingredients' to cook up a PSO of any size.

I liked the fact that it is written in a style that is free of any jargon. Authors are professionals who clearly understand the industry from inside. My least favorite part are the diagrams and illustrations which are at best adequate but could be better. Highly recommend this book!

This book will take you through planning an PS organization, development of various groups, reporting strucutures, templates for tools to help you.

It's focus in on a PS organization of a product company but you can take much away from this book if you are purely a services organization.

Mr. Grave's outstanding book is at once highly entertaining, suspensful, educational and terrifying. Mr. Graves work is clearly the product of extensive real-world experiance. He offers the reader a tour-de-force of South American politics, national and inter-national crime and corruption, all manner of terrorism and narcotics trafficking, weaponry and tactics, high-risk personnel survival, and even some high altitude medical physiology. Graves also points out, in chilling detail, how vulernable the US is to devastating terrorist attacks the likes of which have, fortunately, never been seen before. "Bulletproof" is a must read. It is what Clancy would write had he actually lived it.

While from a literary standpoint I could snipe at this novel's need for some tighter editing, deeper character development, expanded relationships, less awkward dialogue and so forth, I set all of that aside to applaud the true value of this book: it's thorough knowledge and understanding of how the world works and the threats this country faces today.

Like Tom Clancy, Mr. Graves has a real feel for the operations of our enemies and the Intelligence and Special Operations people striving to thwart their efforts. This book is packed with details about the corruption found not only in South America, where it is set, but at the highest corporate and governmental levels as well. Mr. Graves seems to understand the workings of the terrorist world, be they Islamic, Narco-terrorist, Eco-terrorists, or simply terrorist-for-hire. He understands the nexus of drugs and the monstrous amount of money generated that has corrupted a near continent and compromised so much of officialdom. He even gets in information about how great powers, like China, are positioning themselves for the ultimate collapse of the USA.

Almost trying to pack too much into one book, this is still a hell of a read, and Mr.Graves' grasp of the details makes me agree with other reviewers that there seems to be a lot of real-world knowledge at work here. A thriller and adventure, this is also a very sobering picture of the world we really live in, the one unknown or ignored by our politicians and our popular culture.

While the world seems to be focused on the Middle East of late, Latin America will probably be a much bigger problem for the US. This book gives us a glimpse of what is going on in South America. Great "fictional" work that everyone should read to get a taste of foreign problems to come.

Fast, interesting read- combines several different types of genres into one book in a cohesive and interesting format. Explores areas currently unknown in the computer world (well, I hope unknown) and highlights the underworld of sex slavery.

I had not heard of this author before but liked the synopsis so I bought it. It took me a while to get into the book but by around page 20 I was totally hooked. The character development was great. The Artificial intelligence was so real it even made me cry. A great read and I hope he writes a sequel SOON as I want to know more about what happens to the characters and the Artificial Intelligence.

I have read numerous books about asthma in children, but this book is by far the best. The information is presented in a clear, understandable way, but is not so simplified as to be unhelpful. The book is full of good tips and pertinent information; it's like spending an hour or two talking with an asthma specialist. The book has what I found to be invaluable information about how to monitor asthma in children who are too young to use peak flow meters. A system called "asthma signs" is used and is a wonderful way to identify problems and monitor asthma in young children.
There is a also a very helpful section on traveling with a child who has asthma.
If I were to recommend only one book on asthma in children, this would be the book.

Last weekend my seven year old son had an asthma attack with no warning, his first ever. Our doctor treated him competently and he is now recovering nicely, but the information we were given -- and all the drugs and instructions -- were a bit overwhelming. My first response was to try to find some good books on asthma in children, and I was lucky enough to find this one. It explains everything you need to know about asthma in easy-to-understand language. I learned many important facts about the biology of asthma, the drugs my son is taking, long-term care and management of asthma, and -- perhaps most importantly -- the questions I should be asking his doctor. The book is well illustrated, including pictures of all the different kinds of inhalers and spacers, how to properly administer different medications, etc. (particularly useful for newcomers to the world of asthma). I also really liked all the information and sample forms showing how to keep an "asthma diary" of your child's symptoms and treatment. The first-person stories of how other parents have dealt with their children's asthma were helpful, especially for putting things into perspective. In summary, this book really helped me to understand what we are facing, and I now feel much better able to deal with it. I have other asthma books on order, but I doubt I'll need them -- it is hard to imagine how any other book on asthma in children could top this one.

Dr. Plaut was coming to a town near me to speak shortly after my daughter was hospitalized for the third time. One of the nurses handed me a flyer and recommended I go hear him. I bought his book before I went. This book was a lifesaver. I first read it nearly 10 years ago (spring 1992) and my daughter has not been hospitalized since! Dr. Plaut gives the average parent the confidence to handle this illness without falling apart and without having to decipher the medical-ese being spoken by the doctors in charge of their child.

This book became my single source for reference about asthma. Till I found this book, I was reading anything and everything that I could find on the net about asthma. My 3 year old had an asthma episode as a result of a viral infection. She has an excellent pediatrician and we chose to care for her at home. I got great comfort in knowing that the things we did intuitively were the recommended things in this book. It helps to have a good doctor. It also helps to have this book as a friend. While I was freaking out that my daughter had asthma, this book helped me calm down cos I realized that it could be worse. My heart goes out to all the children who suffer. If you are a parent of a young child with asthma, read this book. It will help you understand what asthma is all about in plain words and give you an idea of what you can do to make your child's life more comfortable by learning to identify the symptoms and manage your child's asthma better. Make sure you have a good doctor, too!!

I came across Plaut's book in the aftermath of my 9 year old son's first and life threatening asthma episode just 6 weeks ago. Since then my son's condition has been stabilized with some wonderful medical help. But nothing has been better in understanding the disease, the treatment, and the myriad of medications recommended for it, than Tom Plaut's book. It is now my asthma bible. No one affected by asmtha in any way should miss it!
