AmeriTales Presents Abraham Lincoln and the Forest of Little Pigeon Creek, a children's picturebook loosely based on the childhood of one of America's greatest presidents. Abraham Lincoln and the Forest of Little Pigeon Creek follows young Abraham and his turkey friend Jack (based on a pet of the real-life Lincoln's son Tad) during their journey through a forest to borrow a book from old Mr. Crawford, widely known for having purplish-blue veins on his nose. In the course of his adventure Abe learns two powerful lessons that will serve him for life: that the forest is the home of wild animals, and needs to be respected same as any other home; and that books have incredible power and wisdom stored within. The bright, cartoony color illustrations add a vibrant and cheerful touch to this delightful "one to grow on" story.

What a wonderful book that teaches both history and character. My son truly loved the book and all that Abe went through to borrow a book. The illustrations are superb and the humor is ideal in making it interesting for children. My son wants more!!! We look forward to reading others in the AmeriTales series. Ilene Patrick, Atlanta, GA

Wow, this book taught me a little lesson on history!

I'm an aunt not a mother, but I can honestly say that I enjoyed the book from the time I looked at the cover to the time I turned the last page. I know that if I can be entertained from viewing the pictures, reading each page and re-reading certain pages, then certainly a kid in this age group will also be entertained.

I thought the author expressed the historical events in an informative, creative, yet exciting way. I'm certain most kids and parents will be very satisfied when sharing the story-telling and educational experience together.

I highly recommend this book to others and I can easily envision a movie and/or other books along this same line in the future. Thanks T.D Carter for giving us a book that is educational and exciting!

As a history major in College and a parent, I know history does not have to be drab and boring. One example of a children's series that works really well is the Magic Tree House series and all of the related spin-offs. There two fictional children via a magic tree house are transported back in time to actual historic events and are able to experience them first hand. In this case, the first book in a planned series, the work is based on a fictional story built around a real historical character.

Set in 1818, Abraham Lincoln is nine and walking through the forest of Little Pigeon Creek with his best friend, Jack, who happens to be a turkey. The young Abraham Lincoln is desperately trying to convince himself that he isn't afraid despite the fact that the forest smells, has lots of scary noises and bugs, and all the rest of what one would expect in a forest. For Jack, everything is fine and as he chases a bug here and there, he can't understand why Abraham would be afraid because everything seems to be normal to him.

The only reason Abraham Lincoln is walking deep into the forest is because that is where Old Man Crawford lives in his house. He has a book that Abraham has been itching to read and probably will loan to him for a little while. The journey to his house and back as well as a follow-up journey to return the book provides the adventure and learning moments for the young Abraham Lincoln as well as readers.

The result is a charming children's book with colorful detailed illustrations and a powerful message regarding reading and the environment. Both are very important, as the book makes clear as it does the secondary theme of overcoming obstacles in life.

While marketed and aimed at four to nine year olds, the text itself may reside above their abilities despite a short glossary of terms used at the back of the book. The illustrations though, know no boundaries, and are sure to delight young and old alike. The overall result is a good children's book that parents and others can feel comfortable with young children reading and learning from. It starts the series well and one hopes that future planned editions featuring Amelia Earhart, Thomas Edison, Jackie Robinson and Sitting Bull will meet if not exceed this strong standard.

This is an outstanding book. What I appreciate most about it is its thoughtfulness. Where other books present statistics and give only brief attention to very important topics, this book presents a fair, smart, and thorough account of the World of Admissions and encourages you to sit down and think about things, guiding you along each step of the process.

Wonderful Resource!

"Admission Matters" attracted me for a number of reasons--the background, experience and knowledge of the authors is compelling, but moreover I chose this book because as the parent of three with two already in college and the third an applicant now, I was hopeful that I would find new details and advice regarding the competitive hurdles that my youngest will be facing. My hopes were more than fulfilled! This book is an engaging and informative resource that blends just the right amount of humor, candor, anectodal details, encouragement and reality for parents and their college bound kids. It is also organized to facilitate quick reads of sections and question areas of greatest interest. This is a refreshing and valuable guide in the high-anxiety sea of college planning.

The best book I read so far. As an admission consultant, I think it covers the basic information that parents and kids should know. I even met her in person this year. There is one little problem about this book - it is two years old. So new things happened within these two years have not yet been covered, such as the SMART grant (new for year 2007).

Amazing resource for anyone with admissions question

As a high school senior, I've been having the usual problems with finding a college that I feel is right for me, and then actually going about the process of applying. Not only was this book helpful in answering nearly all of my questions, but it is written in an interesting, friendly manner that I found heartening in the midst of a process that has been incredibley stressful! I recommend this book not only to high school students but their parents as well - my Mother read it and she loved it too!

This is the first book I have read for pleasure in about 20 years. The thought of getting joy out of reading was not on my mind when I started but soon realized that the pleasure comes from "becoming one with the words". "Banking, Beer & Robert The Bruce" was a great choice for me to get back into reading for pleasure. And fun it was!! I now want more....and thank goodness I have just finished the second volume, "Easy come, Easy Go" and the journey in my mind continued in a most pleasurable manner. Mr. Wade kept me wanting to read more but I forced myself to read just one chapter per night as to stretch out the pleasure of reading this very interesting, funny and in many ways informative (as to the specific mind frames and actions of the characters during various periods in history)book!!

As good as reading Harry Potter. Even though this novel is more for adults than children, the story forces you into reading on and on. Very few books have interested me as much as this 'out of the blue' gift. I look forward to the next two volumes and hope I can order them through Amazon UK!

An awesome resource

Aside from the matter of salvation read this because..

Jesus prayed for the church not to divid, yet we divided. The topic of baptism is one of the strongest dividing lines amongst those who profess Christianity. If the church is ever going to be united as a whole body working in unison its going to take people willing to study subjects like baptism and sit down and debate until there is an accord.

Despite what you may have been taught about baptism, despite whether or not your loved one died with out baptism, despite what all your church and friends believe about baptism, there is a black and white truth to baptism. The Bible is very clear on the subject, yet there is division.

The truth is its a matter of life and death. And after reading this book, it walks you through the logic, the facts, the history and the word itself and at the end you will see baptism the way it clearly is painted in the word. Its not needed to be read, but it takes the subject as a whole from the the Bible and puts all the peices together in one writting. So read this if not for yourself, but to help others and unify the those who profess christ.

I believe its essential. Any argument against youve heard will not stand up to truth. go to bebaptized. org and if that ignites you, read this book too.

A very provocative work

Review Date: 2006-11-03
Even as someone from the reformed perspective, I found myself in substantial agreement with Dr. Cottrell's exegetical and theological conclusions that baptism actually confers the very blessings that those in the evangelical community, as well as many in the modern reformed community, believe it merely symbolizes (i.e. the remission of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit). His argument that baptism as a condition of salvation doesn't violate the doctrine of justification by grace alone since baptism is really a work of God and not a work of man, is very similar to the arguments of Luther on this issue and is not at all incompatible with the theology of the reformation. However, I didn't find his arguments and conclusions that the efficacy of baptism is exclusively tied to the exact moment it is administered to be a necessary inference from the biblical texts. Overall, this book is a much needed wake up call to the evangelical and Reformed communities to reexamine their presuppositions regarding the meaning and importance of baptism and the biblical teaching regarding its place in the salvation process of the elect.

Thorough, Scholarly, Objective

Cottrell is painstakingly thorough, yet his writing is well-organized and clear. You feel as if you've considered the subject from every possible angle. The result is a deeper understanding of God's amazing grace. Cottrell's scholarship uncovers meanings that even avid Bible students might have missed. And they all point to the magnificence of God's work.

Cottrell's approach is what makes this book so helpful. It's even-handed, an objective search for what the New Testament writers--and God--intended for their audiences to hear. Every seeker of truth should read this book.

Review Date: 2005-07-23
Jack Cottrell tackles the subject of Baptism with an understanding that the reader will also be a seeker. Because of that, he approaches the subject with such enormous grace to keep the reader engaged all the way through. No one who reads this book will be disappointed, nor will they be offended by the way he handles the subject matter. I look forward to reading more of his books.

Agree or Disagree... Still a Great Read
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2004-09-14
Whether you believe as Cottrell does about baptism or not you can't help but to enjoy reading this book on the subject. The book is written in a style that any serious Bible student will enjoy and benefit from. Just the way that Cottrell explains salvation is worth reading the book for. This book will challenge any believer concerning their view on baptism and it's place in the Christian experience. I also must say that this book, unlike so many, does not defend the position so much as it explains it and that is refreshing. Read it whether you are in the Church of Christ or not. If not, and you read this book, you will respect what they believe even if you have an issue with this doctrine.

This book is a great book about a teenager dealing with normal teen problems. He goes through a lot of stuff in this book and one of them is that he has to repeat 11th grade. He also just wakes up from a BIG accident that almost killed him. He also gets the girl,(if u read the first book)and Sophie finally calls him. How is he going to juggle them? This is extreme pressure on him, dealing with other teen things. He also does a lot of daydreaming and fantasizing. It is a great book and i suggest all teens to read this book.

I didn't like Thorne's attitude toward sex and girls (he made relationships seem like nothing - a great big soap opera or a game of some sort that he would "win" when the girl agreed to sleep with him) and wondered if he'd get Jonah to change the way he looked at girls. I was worried that book would turn into nothing more than a meaningless string of conquests that left hearts squashed in the dust. But this didn't happen. Instead of copycatting Thorne, I liked how Jonah's views stood in stark contrast to his friend Thorne's. I didn't dislike Thorne quite so much when he and Jonah found a way to continue their friendship. Exposing Thorne's nonchalant girl-hopping and then following it up with Thorne's secret (wouldn't you like to know? Read the book!) and then some of Thorne's feelings (which you'd never guess about) made the story deeper and more real. I think I have it figured out who Northgirl999 is... I wonder if I'm right? I'm worried about Jonah doing the same thing to Posie as his buddy Thorne did. Not that I don't like Sophie, but considering Jonah's fury at how Thorne treated Posie, you'd think he'd be more careful of what he's doing... Also, what is up with Posie? She jumps from guy to guy as easily and quickly as some of the guys in the story, only she has never been portrayed as a cheater. What is she really feeling? Does she really love Jonah, or if another guy came along and got Jonah into trouble with her, would she latch on to the new guy? Hhhhmmmmm...

This is by far the best book that i have read in a long time. It contains all the aspects of the life of a teenager. It is about a Junior/Senior named Jonah and its about how he goes about his everyday life and how different people influence him. He makes a lot of new friends like Posie and Sophie, and many others. The author uses great imagry to describe the characters and it almost feels like u know them personally. After i had read the first book of this trillogy i imidiately ordered the next to see what was going to happen to Jonah. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO IS BETWEEN THE AGES OF 14 AND 17.

Yet again we meet Jonah Black and start to learn more about his life and what problems he has in it.

Jonah is just getting out of the hospital and while he is there he finds that someone has giving his roses there, at first he thinks is Cecily but later on he finds out it wasn't.

Jonah is now having to deal with the fact that Posie is going out with Thorne and he hates that. But Jonah does manage to figure out a way to get Posie and he trys to do that. All the time while he is doing that he still thinking about Sophie.

Finally after Jonah learns some shocking news about Thorne does he tell Thorne about the true reason why he got kicked out of the school.

But the true question still is who is NorthGirl999 and will Jonah ever find out.

This book is a great second book and I can't wait to dive into the 3rd and 4th ones and find out much more about Jonah Black and his life.

This book is about all kinds of bugs. My kids ages 5 to 9 were all glued to this one again and again. The illustrations are absolutely the best I've seen. They are so cute and funny and there are tons of different types shown. The pages are overflowing! The gross out factor is high for instance "Oh, in your clothes they're restin, in your nose theyre nestin, there isn't any question, theyre infestin your intestine" and "now, you may have had a hunch, if you bite bugs they will crunch, this is true but stay alert - the fat ones sometimes squirt." Then, the illustrations show the picute of a boy forking a huge bug on a plate and green guts spraying out. My kids were uttering "ooooh yuck" and "oh, he's cute" throughout the book and wanted it read again when we were done. If your kid likes bugs and the gross out factor, this book is for him or her.

QUIRKY, GROSS, REVOLTING AND SOOOO MUCH FUN!

This is one of those silly books that kids (and adults that still have a lot of kid in them) love! It is quirky and is loaded with gross pictures of bugs and very strange suggestions as to what to do with them. The art work is great and the rhyming text is a pleasure to read. A tremendous amount of imagination and work has gone into this work and it has certainly paid off. This is one of the most checked out books in the local school libraries for the young ones. They just enjoy looking at the pictures. This is also a fun book to read with your child or a group of school kids. The bugs depicted and the uses they are put to are so ridiculous that I doubt a child, any child, would take it very serious. Most children are bright enough to spot a "put on" when they see it, so I don't think their is much worry in that department. If you are looking for a fun, interesting and very, very funny book to read with your child, then you probably should give this one a try. The art work alone is worth the price of the book.

Weird, but totally funny

I have bought most of these books for my 6 year old son. They are a little creepy, but for boys, they are terrific fun! And for me too, to be able to get into "character" reading them. I would highly recommend these series of books for anyone who has a child who loves animals, and bugs. Great fun, if you can get through it!

My Grandkids love this book.

This is a good book. It's gross and charmingly off-beat, just as the other reviewers claim. It also rhymes and makes a good out-loud read. And it is very, very outlandishly funny.

However, we also have David T. Greenberg's book Snakes! and it is just as appealingly gross and much funnier. Plus, the rhymes work a bit better for out loud reading. If you are only getting one of his books, I'd go for Snakes!

But before you buy, a quick warning! Neither this book or the Snakes! book are for kids who take things literally or who are easily frightened. I'd only recommend them for children who really "get" puns, word plays and jokes. It is the perfect book for older kids who still love to have books read out loud to them.

There's more to receiving God's blessings

There is more to receiving God's blessings than meets the eye. The blessings of God are greater than words. I've learned and I'm continuing to learn that there is indeed a process (before you're even aware of it) that takes place (in you) before a manifestation of God's blessing is handed down. The beauty is it's God who gives the blessings, but also it's God who enables us not only to extend our hand to receive the blessing, but it's also God who enables us to open that same hand. As God opens our hand to receive His blessings He also prepares us, prepares our heart, our emotions, and our abilities (in advance) to handle the opposition, the resentment, the rejection and the pain that comes from friends, family, church members, and yes, even the saints of God. You see so many people (Christians, and non-Christians alike) want the blessing, but are they first in love with the giver of the blessing, the Sovereign One? It is through reading this book (Can You Stand to be Blessed) that I'm reminded of the organization and the turn of events, that take place while in the process of being, "BEING PROCESSED FOR GOD'S BLESSING."

Once Again, T.D. Jakes, Thanks for sharing what either our parents, aunts, and uncles didn't know, or perhaps they just didn't know how to share on being a receiver of God's blessings. I will continue to pass on the gift of learning, and sharing not only just the blessings of God, but also the preparation process.

I've been on a blessing journey for quite a while. I'm on the way, and yes there are some good times along the way, however, there are also some not so good times. The truth, the truth must be shared. The blessings of God are available but "Can You Stand to be Blessed" is the question.

You Can Stand to be Blessed, but you mustn't nor will the Father allow you to miss the process. Oh God cares for us soooo much, that every step in His process will be completed to His satisfaction before we are allowed to move on.

T.D. Jakes, I continue lifting you up in the hearing of the Father, believing that God continues to sharpen your hearing of His voice as you continue to share the Father's heart with the people.

You too continue being able, and willing to "Stand to be Blessed"
