The narratives of memories from years past are wonderful additions to the recipes in this gem of a cookbook. I particularly appreciated the personal remarks by the Wilkes family about many of the recipes. Having grown up in the south myself, I continue to be amazed at the simplicity of southern cuisine (yes, it's cuisine!) while at the same time being so wonderfully sublime! I've found more recipes I want to try in this book than in any other I've bought in a long, long while.

I enjoyed many meals at Mrs. Wilkes Boardinghouse during my six year tenure in beautiful Savannah, GA. I can't tell you how the atmosphere and family-style serving add to these wonderful recipes. You wouldn't think they could get any better, but you'd just have to go there and see for yourself! The experience just takes you back to another time. You're seated at large tables with other folks who've waited in line (that wraps around the corner and down the block on most days) right along with you. Then they bring out the food (there's no ordering, everyone gets the same thing) and it's passed family-style around the table. There is nothing like it. I highly recommend a visit to Mrs. Wilkes Boardinghouse which is located on Jones Street (between Bull and Tattnal Streets) in the heart of the historic district.

I enjoy the stories interlaced with the recipes in this book. I am looking forward to making pies, macaroni and cheese, and many of the other wonderful recipes in this cookbook. I think new cooks would find the recipes easy to follow, and everyone would find the stories entertaining.

`Mrs. Wilkes' Boardinghouse Cookbook' is a collection of recipes attributed to Sema Wilkes of dishes served at her famous Savannah boarding house (which no longer takes in boarders). The recipes are augmented by a series of articles on the history of the Wilkes family and the restaurant by John T. Edge, a widely and favorably recognized writer on southern culinary matters.

The most interesting aspect of the recipes in this book is that they are as much an interest as an historical record as they are a basis of culinary inspiration. The most interesting books with which to compare this work may be, for example, `Rome, at Home' by Suzanne Dunaway and the books on Sicilian cookery by writer/actor Vincent Schiavelli. The most similar book I have seen is Ms. Sally Ann Robinson's charming little book, `Gullah Home Cooking the Daufuskie Way'. A non-culinary comparison may be to a manual on how to do decorative painting in the style of the Pennsylvania Dutch hex signs. I say this only to enhance the value you can anticipate from this notable book.

This volume contains recipes for `Comfort Food Central'. Ask a hundred second generation Americans to name their top five favorite dishes and recipes for virtually all these dishes will be in this book. Main dishes include fried chicken, chicken cacciatore, roast beef, beef bourguignonne, meatballs, meatloaf, chop suey, corned beef and cabbage, and chili. This is the typical collection of both classic Southern dishes mixed with Americanizations of famous foreign dishes. All other types of dishes show a similar selection of favorites. The dessert chapter stays just a bit closer to home by featuring primarily cakes, such as pound cake, red velvet cake, carrot cake, and fruitcake and pies (and cobblers) such as lemon meringue pie, sweet potato pie, pecan pie, peach pie, and blackberry pie.

Many of the savory recipes are simply `dump and heat', where the procedure could hardly be any simpler. Recipes for chili and beef bourguignonne which in some hands take on epic dimensions are so simple in this book that you need to look twice to be sure this is the dish being made. This simplicity is achieved in many cases by using one or more classic darlings of 1950's cooking, canned, condensed soup, canned mushrooms, bouillon cubes, French dressing, and bottled mayonnaise. This doesn't mean the results of these recipes are not tasty, it only means the dishes may be a lot different than what you may be expecting. This is definitely not Julia Child's beef bourguignonne. Even such staples of Southern cooking such as fried chicken are done in a highly abbreviated way with no brining and no buttermilk marinade.

Another caution with these recipes is that many have not been scaled down from boarding room proportions to suit a family of four. Still another concern is that like a lot of recipes in `Gullah Home Cooking the Daufuskie Way', there is a certain sameness in a lot of recipes. All the potato and macaroni and chicken and egg salads are about the same except for the star ingredient. Again, this doesn't mean they are poor recipes, it just means they all reflect a time when supermarkets didn't have radicchio, fennel, Belgian endive, celery root, and leeks. So, lots of recipes had to depend on celery, onions, and carrots.

Since this oversized book with lots of excellent pictures and really interesting text lists at only $29.95, the quality of these pictures and text and the `archeological' interest of the recipes is more than enough to make this book a worthy addition to your cookbook collection. If you want to make pies, read Nick Malgieri. If you want to bake cakes, read Maida Heatter. If you want to make meatballs, read Marcella Hazan. If you want to make barbecue, read Steve Raichlen. If you want classic Southern cooking, read Edna Lewis. If you want to make beef bourguignonne, for heavens sake, read Julia Child, Tony Bourdain, or Thomas Keller. But, if you want a taste of Savannah boardinghouse cooking, this is your book.

Aside from supporting recipes for preparations such as meringue, sauces, dressings, and piecrusts, there are virtually no cooking instructions here. Even the index fails now and then in that there are prepared ingredients mentioned in some recipes for which there are no entries in the index. So, I have no clue to how to make a `Kitchen Bouquet' mentioned as an ingredient in several recipes. And, I suspect a great part of the quality of the food at Mrs. Wilkes boardinghouse can be attributed to the skill of the staff and to the quality of the ingredients rather than to the excellence of the recipes.

As long as you buy this book for the right reasons, you will not be disappointed.

I don't know where to start with this book. This is obviously some of Pastor Jakes early work but it has the same fire that his later books have. This book has taught me how to open up more and stop trying hide behind what "looks appropriate" thereby keeping secrets unnecessarily and keeping me in bondage. No I don't share everything with everybody but I do have someone to which I go to now to hold me accountable no matter how bad, silly, or far fetched it may seem as well as someone who is supportive and in my corner when I can't see where I am going. Excellent book.

T.D. strikes again! I read a novel called "Waiting to Exit Hell," and it is one of the best novels I've read all year. This author boldly deals with the really real. Besides T.D. Jakes books, I highly recommend this book also. Not only does it "keep it real," but it provides entertainment as well, to keep your attention. A five star novel.

T.D. Jakes brings home a winner with this call to openess. Jakes discusses the need for openess with God and fellow Christians. The title comes from Genesis when Adam and Eve were naked before God, and walked with God. Jakes uses this imagery to call us to a deeper relationship with God, by dropping our outward protections and being totally honest with where we really are in life. This challenge is not for the faint of heart, but for those seeking to go to the next level. The only way up is to strip down.

I believe that Bishop TD Jakes is one of the most influence minister in this day and time. I offen say if I was in Texas that Bishop Jakes would be my pastor. He has help me out in some many ways. The title of the book alone gave me to courage to stand, by itself "Naked and not ashamed" how many time spiritually and physically I was ashamed about things I did not want to be reveal. But I have learned just by read and listing to Bishop Jakes along with my favor my Pastor how to get over hurt and pain. Thanks Bishop Jakes because of minister such as yourself you have help me as well as other women to get over it and still be save.

Favorite Childhood Book

This was the holy grail of my childhood library. I would always go straight to this huge book when we had library time. It was on a wooden slanted shelf with a bottom lip so little kids didn't have to bear the full weight to read it. I can honestly say this book heavily influenced my interest in science and astronomy for my entire life. Beautiful, inspiring paintings with easy to read and understand text suitable for young children. This book takes you from the surface of the earth to the planets of the solar system and beyond to the edge of the universe unraveling the mystery of the cosmos. I have it on my coffee table now and read it often as an adult with much nostalgia and continued interest. The cover art by John Berkey alone is worth the purchase.

This book was my favorite growing up. I would take it everywhere: to grandma's house; on doctor's visits. I had at the age of three! I still have parts of it. (I had to tear it apart when my cousins needed me to fax pages from it for their homework projects.)This book gives you a look at how we as Americans have advance upto the 1980's. The pictures are amazing and there is mythological information for each plantet and the sun (Apollo). It even gives scientic information like physics and math. There's a section on men and women scientist who's contributions make our world a better place.

When I was a child, I would borrow this book from the library as often as I could. It really sparked my interest in the solar system and space in general. Even though the information in the book is considered out-of-date, I believe it is still relevant today. It can stir anyone's interest in astronomy!

My parents had this book on our shelf since before I was born, and when I was old enough to pick it up and read it, I fell in love. Even if some of the text was beyond my comprehension, the illustrations were more than enough to capture my imagination and drive my interest in astronomy. As I got older and could understand more of my reading, the book became that much more important and influential for me. I used it as a resource for several reports through out elementary and middle school.

Sure, by this time, some of the information contained in the book is outdated and many new discoveries have been made, but the information that is there is a great resource for people of any age. I only remembered the book just now as I study for my Black Holes and Cosmic Evolution final, and how much I'd like to take a glance at it for some outside information!

Besides my own copy, I have never seen another one of these books. It's a shame really, because this book combines information and illustration in the way only National Geographic can. The nine planets of our solar system make up the majority of text material here, which goes a long way in preserving the shelf life of this book.

Our Universe begins with a brief history of astronomy entitled from 'Sun Gods to Gamma Rays' and is written in a manner accessible for all ages. Gallant then proceeds to examine our solar system piece by piece, beginning with the sun and then the orbiting planets. Each planet is given its own chapter, complete with graphs of orbital patterns, atmospheric qualities and actual photographs if available. Stunning artwork is peppered throughout, and in my opinion makes this book a treasure.

Finally, Our Universe includes chapters on comets, asteroids and meteors, and the various galaxies outside our own Milky Way. It's a book that everyone can enjoy. Adults might learn something new, and the artwork will garner interest in kids to learn more about our universe.

...please accept my sincere congratulations and thanks for an absolutely fabulous baking book, where every recipe is delicious and never disappoints. I'm from a family of German baking women -- you know how fine an art baking is in Deutschland -- and have shared your recipes and books with them along with best friends. This afternoon I made your scrumptious lemon bars, which my husband and I enjoyed with a small glass of white wine. Truly heavenly. Thank you, Jim.

Comfort Desserts - 3.5 Stars

I bought this book in the late 80s and have used it steadily through the years. The book was out-of print but recently made a comeback as a paperback. By today's cookbook standards, this isn't a very sophisticated work - and that's fine by me. The recipes come under the heading of "comfort desserts" and the dozen or so that I have used have always turned out well. The Oatmeal Cake with Crunchy Oat Topping is my favorite - a great old-fashioned cake to take to informal gatherings. The Irish Soda Bread, Russian Tea Balls, Applesauce Cake, Cardamom Cookies, Date Crumble Bars, and Pecan Pie are all delicious. Think elementary school bake sales.

The recipe for Cardamom Bread (Nisua) is huge and unwieldy (five braided loaves!) - unless you're the proud owner of an equally hefty Viking 7-Quart mixer. Fobel said he was not able to successfully reduce the recipe to a more mangeable size - perhaps he just didn't try hard enough. My own recipe for Swedish Cardamom Bread makes three braided loaves - as much as anyone would want to handle at one time in a home kitchen. The "1933 Glory Cake" is tooth-achingly sweet and the "Maraschino Cherry Cake" just isn't appetizing - but I prefer sour cherries for baking.

These are easy recipes delivered in a straighforward and friendly manner - and the price is right. Comparable to Marilyn Moore's "Wooden Spoon Dessert Book" and Lee Bailey's "Country Desserts". I give it 3.5 stars.

Delicious and Delightful

Review Date: 2006-08-27
The format of the cookbook is simple and without airs, like the old-fashioned American desserts represented throughout. There are no elaborate photo spreads of artsy kitchen-work, just the occasional black and white photo from Fobel's family album. The font is reasonably large, so you won't have to squint even if your vision is getting a little fuzzy. Ingredients are set apart visually from instructions, and instructions are divided into short, convenient numbered steps that make the recipes easy to follow.

And as for the recipes--oh, my, the recipes! There's a marble cake that's hardly any more difficult to make than a boxed cake mix, yet infinitely more moist and delicious. There's a raspberry cream pie that we picked up the ingredients for on the spur of the moment (the raspberries looked too good to resist that week), and I can still taste its exquisite sweet-tartness. You'll find recipes for traditional favorites such as coconut cream, pecan, and pumpkin pies, but you'll also find things like banana meringue pie, Mrs. Paasanen's cheese pie, and a glazed strawberry pie. Cakes range from a golden fruitcake to burnt butter cupcakes, chocolate coffee cream roll, and a maple layer cake.

There are coffee cakes, sweet rolls, yeast breads, cookies of all kinds, and of course cobblers, crunches, etc. Whether you want something simple that mostly uses dry ingredients and a few things you probably already have around the house, or you're in the mood for something that uses the best of the season's fresh fruit, you'll definitely find it here!

Mr. Fobel started from a pile of crumbling, yellowed recipes that inevitably left out changes and whole steps that his family members knew by heart, and recreated the nostalgic wonders of his childhood for us to enjoy in our own kitchens. These are painstakingly tested recipes that come out beautifully and result in absolutely delicious foods, and this is a cookbook well worth purchasing!

I received this book as a gift in 1989. It is the BEST baking book I've ever owned. I need a new one because it is falling apart. The "Almond Ring" pastry is the best - it has been a Christmas morning tradition in our family since I first made it in 1989. The "Devil's Food Cake with Chocolate Fudge Frosting" is the most incredible chocolate cake I've ever made. If you want to learn the basics about baking from scratch, this is the book for you. I will buy this book for each of my kids when they move out - they have learned to bake from scratch over the years by making recipes from this cookbook. Anyone who loves old fashioned baking needs this book!

Excellent book. I am not a golfer, but admire Phil Mickelson because it has always seemed to me that he has his priorities straight. His wife and his children are uppermost in his list of what life means to him. Must confess that I merely skimmed the details of the hole to hole play in the Masters tournament being described since I had purchased the book to read about his personal life. However, my husband, who IS a golfer, very much enjoyed the "play by play" in addition to more information on the personal side of Phil. This is an athlete children can look up to and admire without parents fearing an ugly, hidden side. That simply doesn't exist in this athlete. I have always enjoyed watching him play; now I will enjoy those tournaments even more.

A great book for any golf fan..

Operation Stagecoach Red was a really neat book mainly because when I read it I couldn't put it down. Every chapter was full of intence action and excitement. It was like you were there with courage and Thao as they went through the jungle with the small team infiltrating the North Vietnamese defenses. Being a wounded Green Beret the book appealed to me and it surpassed my expectations! We served in the same area and he was devouted to his country, family, and his teammates!! I spent six months in Valley Forge General Hospital as a patient and I thought I was there again while reading each line in the book. I believe we were very talented and skilled professionals that lived up to every challenge presented. He ran his personal life as if it were an operation in combat. As a Republican he took a job with a Democrat because he belived in his leadership and could support him totally. He made teens realize that working hard and having respect for themselves made you feel good!
His relationship with God is one that many veterans go through as I believe in a God but don't think he is just there for one denomination. When you see atrocities it shakes your very belief that a God would allow them to happen. You learn that he does this to check your ability and follow the path that will make you the most productive.
I cried(yes real men cry, laughed, shared the pain, and shared the pride in which he lived his life.
I have been a CEO for many different hospitals over the past 35 years and I believe that I have made them better places because of the lessons I learned as a Green Beret.
I read this book not knowing what to expect and the journey was one that took my breath away, gave me great pride. I remember that all that hurt and pain made the trip worthwhile.
I think you will be a better person for reading this book. His courage in everything he did was never questioned nor his devotion to get it done!

This is a magnificent tribute to a magnificent man. Maureen Collins Baker has created a masterpiece that has brought B.T. to life once again. He was unique, one of a kind, unforgettable.

For those of us who knew him slightly or knew him well, this book is a living testament to all he believed in. For those who never met him, this book is an insight into a truly wonderful life - a life of unselfish acts, an altruistic journey.

B.T. inspired, taught, and persuaded people with his words, his selflessness, and his humor. Maureen has conveyed this in her own words and given a new life to the memory of Brien Thomas Collins. The man who could be described as "one in a lifetime" has been endowed with a living legacy, Outrageous Hero.

Thank you, Maureen!

I do not believe that I have ever laughed and cried so much reading the same book than I did from "Outrageous Hero." As one who spent several late "Torch Club" nights with BT and later had the privilage of working with him in the Wilson Administration,I believe his sister, Maureen Collins Baker, has done the Nation and California a tremendous service with her appropriately poignant remembrance of her brother, BT. This book should be required reading for everybody who thinks he or she has a reason to whine about their Country but who have never served it in any capacity. We could indeed use the candor, courage and integrity of 3 million BT's about now. Thank you Maureen for writing this book. God, I hope I spelled everything correctly. Michael B. Neal, Loomis, CA

This story will grab you by the heart. It will make you cry and it will make you laugh. You will never look at your life in quite the same way again. "Outrageous Hero" is the compelling story of B.T. Collins, a genuine American original - a tough talking, straight shooting, dedicated, fun-loving, full-blooded American hero. Here's a man of the people who volunteered for the Green Berets in Vietnam, where a grenade ripped off his arm and his leg. When he picked himself up, he managed to put himself through law school and then worked as the key man for two California governors of opposite parties.

Writer Maureen Collins Baker brilliantly presents this colorful maverick's life, warts and all. It's an emotional roller coaster that will make you proud to be an American. I first met Collins in 1967 while recuperating from my own wounds at an Army Hospital in Pennsylvania. He's been my hero ever since. Now, with Baker's fast-paced biography, he will be all of America's hero as well.

...and not in the sense of fantasy. This book is the real deal, a thinking person's da Vinci Code (though the analogy doesn't do "The Parchment" justice). Page turner, engrossing, intelligent, etc., all the usual shibboleths apply. This is simply a terrific piece of work.

A page turner. Following an ancient parchment as it resurfaces in the last days of a present pope, threatening to upset a papal election. The parchment is picked up during the fall of the Jewish temple (62 ce), and we follow it re-emerging through the middle ages, the crusades, and the present Israeli - Palestinean crisis. Great action sequences. Subtle papal intrigue. Romance and adventure. I couldn't put it down.

A Great Historical Novel

This book is a true page turner for anyone interested in historical fiction. This story is plausible and believable, and the author is very skillful in the way he skips back and forth in time to tell the tale.

It is also far more enjoyable (and believable) than the De Vinci Code, probably the best-known work to deal with similar subject matter (and in my opinion the most over-rated book in recent memory).

Unlike most other works of this kind, McLaughlin's story works without straining credulity, while still being challenging and interesting. It's simply a shame that this work has not received more exposure.

What is even more stunning is that the Parchment appears to be McLaughlin's first work of fiction (I understand that he is a legal scholar of some note and has previously published academic papers). It's been a couple of years since this book has come out, and I sincerely hope that Mr. McLaughlin is working on another historical fiction novel for us, his fans.

Excellent writing about papal transition, consipracy, political suspense and church history. From the Knights Templar to the current Mideast tensions McLaughlin ties it all together. Because of the recent papal transition, it is a must read and a great deal of fun.

A thoroughly absorbing experience.

I read this book in just two sittings, it took that strong a hold on me. The author's imagination went far beyond the research he must have done to ground the story historically, so that suspense and excitement prevailed on every page. And the final twist to the mystery is masterful. I would recommend The Parchment to anyone who enjoys a well-told tale that comes out of history but is solidly contemporary, uncannily right out of the news.

and get Dr. Fee's audio tapes from Regent College bookstore.
I studied with Dr. Fee at Gordon-Conwell while pastoring in Cambridge, Ma. Our church supported some of Dr. Fee's mission trips around the world. His books are all great, but his lectures, especially his exegetical NT book studies, are simply unparalleled, satisfying the intellect and the spirit and leading one to experience the Holy Spirit in the Word.

Essential for Study of Paul

This is a wonderful resource, appropriate for anyone who is seriously studying Paul. It features detailed, thorough, analysis of passages from all of Paul's letters. Yet it doesn't become bogged down in minutiae. Fee's synthesis rises above the details to offer a compelling picture of Paul's Christology.

This book bridges an important gap in the study of Paul. It offers far more detailed analyses of scripture than the many theologies of Paul that have been written. Yet it examines the broad scope of Paul's writings in a way that commentaries on individual letters cannot.

This volume is primarily a scholarly work, but the author's own faith and love for the scriptures are readily apparent. I also recommend it for any academically-minded Christian who wishes to study Paul's letters for devotional purposes. I used this book extensively in writing a Masters' thesis on Paul's letters, but I also expect to use it for preaching.

Those who already own Fee's commentaries on 1 Corinthians or Philippians will find that there is a good deal of overlap between those works and this one--even verbatim repetition at times. However, this book is still worth getting for Fee's writings on other letters, as well as the synthesis.

Dr. Fee expects that this book will be most useful as a reference text and he is likely correct. This is not some 160-200 page large print book with a lot of fill material that you can read in a few days.

It is a thorough discussion (chronologically) of every Christological verse Paul wrote. It shows how Paul made frequent use of the Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures (the SEPTUAGINT aka LXX)when he referenced our Lord Jesus in his letters.

I am only an interested layperson but I could easily follow Dr. Fee's discussions.

One of the more interesting concepts (perhaps very familiar to Bible scholars) that Fee uses is that of "echoes." An example would be how 1 Thess 4:16 (the Lord descending)is an "echo" of Psalm 46:6 (the LORD; i.e. YHWH, ascending).

Very useful for reflection and devotional reading. Buy it, its is excellent

If one's eye drifts across the shelves of my study, and if all the loaned books have been returned, you would probably find more volumes by Gordon Fee than any other. I am happy to add his Pauline Cristology to my collection. I am currently designing a new course on the Apostle Paul and this work is invaluable to my study of Pauline Themes.

Deep Review of Paul's Christology

If you are looking for a detailed, deep review of Paul's Christology then this book is for you. It is not a light read but it is also not so technical and erudite that the average reader would find it too difficult. Dr. Fee has presented the material in an systematic and academic fashion. I suspect that this book will become the textbook for many college classes on the subject. This book and the new book by Bowman and Komoszewski "Putting Jesus In His Place" should end the critic's claims that Jesus wasn't thought of as divine until the 3rd or 4th centuries.
