Savannah Lore and Recipes. Good Look and ReadReview Date: 2004-12-29
The most interesting aspect of the recipes in this book is that they are as much an interest as an historical record as they are a basis of culinary inspiration. The most interesting books with which to compare this work may be, for example, `Rome, at Home' by Suzanne Dunaway and the books on Sicilian cookery by writer/actor Vincent Schiavelli. The most similar book I have seen is Ms. Sally Ann Robinson's charming little book, `Gullah Home Cooking the Daufuskie Way'. A non-culinary comparison may be to a manual on how to do decorative painting in the style of the Pennsylvania Dutch hex signs. I say this only to enhance the value you can anticipate from this notable book.
This volume contains recipes for `Comfort Food Central'. Ask a hundred second generation Americans to name their top five favorite dishes and recipes for virtually all these dishes will be in this book. Main dishes include fried chicken, chicken cacciatore, roast beef, beef bourguignonne, meatballs, meatloaf, chop suey, corned beef and cabbage, and chili. This is the typical collection of both classic Southern dishes mixed with Americanizations of famous foreign dishes. All other types of dishes show a similar selection of favorites. The dessert chapter stays just a bit closer to home by featuring primarily cakes, such as pound cake, red velvet cake, carrot cake, and fruitcake and pies (and cobblers) such as lemon meringue pie, sweet potato pie, pecan pie, peach pie, and blackberry pie.
Many of the savory recipes are simply `dump and heat', where the procedure could hardly be any simpler. Recipes for chili and beef bourguignonne which in some hands take on epic dimensions are so simple in this book that you need to look twice to be sure this is the dish being made. This simplicity is achieved in many cases by using one or more classic darlings of 1950's cooking, canned, condensed soup, canned mushrooms, bouillon cubes, French dressing, and bottled mayonnaise. This doesn't mean the results of these recipes are not tasty, it only means the dishes may be a lot different than what you may be expecting. This is definitely not Julia Child's beef bourguignonne. Even such staples of Southern cooking such as fried chicken are done in a highly abbreviated way with no brining and no buttermilk marinade.
Another caution with these recipes is that many have not been scaled down from boarding room proportions to suit a family of four. Still another concern is that like a lot of recipes in `Gullah Home Cooking the Daufuskie Way', there is a certain sameness in a lot of recipes. All the potato and macaroni and chicken and egg salads are about the same except for the star ingredient. Again, this doesn't mean they are poor recipes, it just means they all reflect a time when supermarkets didn't have radicchio, fennel, Belgian endive, celery root, and leeks. So, lots of recipes had to depend on celery, onions, and carrots.
Since this oversized book with lots of excellent pictures and really interesting text lists at only $29.95, the quality of these pictures and text and the `archeological' interest of the recipes is more than enough to make this book a worthy addition to your cookbook collection. If you want to make pies, read Nick Malgieri. If you want to bake cakes, read Maida Heatter. If you want to make meatballs, read Marcella Hazan. If you want to make barbecue, read Steve Raichlen. If you want classic Southern cooking, read Edna Lewis. If you want to make beef bourguignonne, for heavens sake, read Julia Child, Tony Bourdain, or Thomas Keller. But, if you want a taste of Savannah boardinghouse cooking, this is your book.
Aside from supporting recipes for preparations such as meringue, sauces, dressings, and piecrusts, there are virtually no cooking instructions here. Even the index fails now and then in that there are prepared ingredients mentioned in some recipes for which there are no entries in the index. So, I have no clue to how to make a `Kitchen Bouquet' mentioned as an ingredient in several recipes. And, I suspect a great part of the quality of the food at Mrs. Wilkes boardinghouse can be attributed to the skill of the staff and to the quality of the ingredients rather than to the excellence of the recipes.
As long as you buy this book for the right reasons, you will not be disappointed.

Sure, by this time, some of the information contained in the book is outdated and many new discoveries have been made, but the information that is there is a great resource for people of any age. I only remembered the book just now as I study for my Black Holes and Cosmic Evolution final, and how much I'd like to take a glance at it for some outside information!

Our Universe begins with a brief history of astronomy entitled from 'Sun Gods to Gamma Rays' and is written in a manner accessible for all ages. Gallant then proceeds to examine our solar system piece by piece, beginning with the sun and then the orbiting planets. Each planet is given its own chapter, complete with graphs of orbital patterns, atmospheric qualities and actual photographs if available. Stunning artwork is peppered throughout, and in my opinion makes this book a treasure.
Finally, Our Universe includes chapters on comets, asteroids and meteors, and the various galaxies outside our own Milky Way. It's a book that everyone can enjoy. Adults might learn something new, and the artwork will garner interest in kids to learn more about our universe.

Comfort Desserts - 3.5 Stars Review Date: 2006-10-19
The recipe for Cardamom Bread (Nisua) is huge and unwieldy (five braided loaves!) - unless you're the proud owner of an equally hefty Viking 7-Quart mixer. Fobel said he was not able to successfully reduce the recipe to a more mangeable size - perhaps he just didn't try hard enough. My own recipe for Swedish Cardamom Bread makes three braided loaves - as much as anyone would want to handle at one time in a home kitchen. The "1933 Glory Cake" is tooth-achingly sweet and the "Maraschino Cherry Cake" just isn't appetizing - but I prefer sour cherries for baking.
These are easy recipes delivered in a straighforward and friendly manner - and the price is right. Comparable to Marilyn Moore's "Wooden Spoon Dessert Book" and Lee Bailey's "Country Desserts". I give it 3.5 stars.
Delicious and DelightfulReview Date: 2006-08-27
And as for the recipes--oh, my, the recipes! There's a marble cake that's hardly any more difficult to make than a boxed cake mix, yet infinitely more moist and delicious. There's a raspberry cream pie that we picked up the ingredients for on the spur of the moment (the raspberries looked too good to resist that week), and I can still taste its exquisite sweet-tartness. You'll find recipes for traditional favorites such as coconut cream, pecan, and pumpkin pies, but you'll also find things like banana meringue pie, Mrs. Paasanen's cheese pie, and a glazed strawberry pie. Cakes range from a golden fruitcake to burnt butter cupcakes, chocolate coffee cream roll, and a maple layer cake.
There are coffee cakes, sweet rolls, yeast breads, cookies of all kinds, and of course cobblers, crunches, etc. Whether you want something simple that mostly uses dry ingredients and a few things you probably already have around the house, or you're in the mood for something that uses the best of the season's fresh fruit, you'll definitely find it here!
Mr. Fobel started from a pile of crumbling, yellowed recipes that inevitably left out changes and whole steps that his family members knew by heart, and recreated the nostalgic wonders of his childhood for us to enjoy in our own kitchens. These are painstakingly tested recipes that come out beautifully and result in absolutely delicious foods, and this is a cookbook well worth purchasing!

You never know how great you can be until you meet AdversityReview Date: 2008-11-16
His relationship with God is one that many veterans go through as I believe in a God but don't think he is just there for one denomination. When you see atrocities it shakes your very belief that a God would allow them to happen. You learn that he does this to check your ability and follow the path that will make you the most productive.
I cried(yes real men cry, laughed, shared the pain, and shared the pride in which he lived his life.
I have been a CEO for many different hospitals over the past 35 years and I believe that I have made them better places because of the lessons I learned as a Green Beret.
I read this book not knowing what to expect and the journey was one that took my breath away, gave me great pride. I remember that all that hurt and pain made the trip worthwhile.
I think you will be a better person for reading this book. His courage in everything he did was never questioned nor his devotion to get it done!

For those of us who knew him slightly or knew him well, this book is a living testament to all he believed in. For those who never met him, this book is an insight into a truly wonderful life - a life of unselfish acts, an altruistic journey.
B.T. inspired, taught, and persuaded people with his words, his selflessness, and his humor. Maureen has conveyed this in her own words and given a new life to the memory of Brien Thomas Collins. The man who could be described as "one in a lifetime" has been endowed with a living legacy, Outrageous Hero.
Thank you, Maureen!

Writer Maureen Collins Baker brilliantly presents this colorful maverick's life, warts and all. It's an emotional roller coaster that will make you proud to be an American. I first met Collins in 1967 while recuperating from my own wounds at an Army Hospital in Pennsylvania. He's been my hero ever since. Now, with Baker's fast-paced biography, he will be all of America's hero as well.

A Great Historical NovelReview Date: 2005-07-12
It is also far more enjoyable (and believable) than the De Vinci Code, probably the best-known work to deal with similar subject matter (and in my opinion the most over-rated book in recent memory).
Unlike most other works of this kind, McLaughlin's story works without straining credulity, while still being challenging and interesting. It's simply a shame that this work has not received more exposure.
What is even more stunning is that the Parchment appears to be McLaughlin's first work of fiction (I understand that he is a legal scholar of some note and has previously published academic papers). It's been a couple of years since this book has come out, and I sincerely hope that Mr. McLaughlin is working on another historical fiction novel for us, his fans.

Do yourself a favorReview Date: 2008-07-05
I studied with Dr. Fee at Gordon-Conwell while pastoring in Cambridge, Ma. Our church supported some of Dr. Fee's mission trips around the world. His books are all great, but his lectures, especially his exegetical NT book studies, are simply unparalleled, satisfying the intellect and the spirit and leading one to experience the Holy Spirit in the Word.
Essential for Study of PaulReview Date: 2008-05-19
This book bridges an important gap in the study of Paul. It offers far more detailed analyses of scripture than the many theologies of Paul that have been written. Yet it examines the broad scope of Paul's writings in a way that commentaries on individual letters cannot.
This volume is primarily a scholarly work, but the author's own faith and love for the scriptures are readily apparent. I also recommend it for any academically-minded Christian who wishes to study Paul's letters for devotional purposes. I used this book extensively in writing a Masters' thesis on Paul's letters, but I also expect to use it for preaching.
Those who already own Fee's commentaries on 1 Corinthians or Philippians will find that there is a good deal of overlap between those works and this one--even verbatim repetition at times. However, this book is still worth getting for Fee's writings on other letters, as well as the synthesis.
Excellent WorkReview Date: 2008-05-06
It is a thorough discussion (chronologically) of every Christological verse Paul wrote. It shows how Paul made frequent use of the Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures (the SEPTUAGINT aka LXX)when he referenced our Lord Jesus in his letters.
I am only an interested layperson but I could easily follow Dr. Fee's discussions.
One of the more interesting concepts (perhaps very familiar to Bible scholars) that Fee uses is that of "echoes." An example would be how 1 Thess 4:16 (the Lord descending)is an "echo" of Psalm 46:6 (the LORD; i.e. YHWH, ascending).
Very useful for reflection and devotional reading. Buy it, its is excellent
