Too many footnotes
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-27
I have read about half the book so far.

One thing that irks me is all the footnotes. I have not counted them but they must total in the thousands. While I agree that it is important not to use somebody else's work without acknowledgement, this book seems to take it to the extreme. I can tell that the author(s) must be English majors because normal people would simply not use so many footnotes. It would have been better to use the "shotgun" approach - a statement something like "some statements in this book are not entirely those of the authors, other works have been used blah, blah, blah...."

As for the content of the book, there is the overwhelming hint of inside advertising for various companies. Examples are good, I agree, but I get the feeling there are many hidden advertisements for various companies.

A lot of the information is common sense. I thought this book would give me more insight into the way advertising works, so far I have been underwhelmed to the point of disappointment.

I can only hope the rest of the book will make up for a lackluster beginning.

The advertising behind the advertising

If I had to choose one book as a survival book in the adfield, this would definitely be my weapon of choice.
It has down to earth and truthful advertising insights about how things work or don't in the advertising universe.

It really, really is a must have for all us who deal from the agency side or the marketing side of the ad business.
Better if any agency and client read this before to fully understand one another, in working better off as one team aiming to one vision.

This book details and focus everything from the psychological point of view.
This one is definitely a keeper!

The best book on the psychology behind advertising by far

I was introduced to this book several years ago when I was in the ad agency industry.
Since then, my issue has been read and re-read, referenced countless times.
My copy mysteriously disappeared (hey who could blame them??) so have just rebought the newest version of this book.
The book is brilliant because it gets behind the psychology of the buyer, allowing you to really and simply understand the thought process behind the buying decision.
Others who have touched on the subject of the psychology of reasons why we buy have made the content too heavy, too theoretical and let's face it - Boring with a capital "B" ... but not these authors.
It has great examples of ad campaigns throughout the book.
Personally this book has helped me design and write more responsive advertising campaigns as the many learnings from this book have stayed.
This is a must-read for anyone in an ad agency, students of marketing and advertising, and anyone in the marketing industry.
Buy this book, you won't regret it.

I found this book un-put-downable. From start to finish the pace never lets up giving you little time to think about such mundane acts as eating and drinking. Mr Robinson's vivid description and use of the putrifying mess that's left after a major battle adds great a twist to the story. I recommemnd this book with only one reservation that it should to be read on an empty stomach. Otherwise buy it!

Being an avid fan of fantasy, choosing to read this book was easy. After getting into it, I found it much more exciting than most. Number one, the story is based after the battle, not a pretty scene and well described in gory detail. Mr. Robinson puts you there, on the battlefield itself. Once you get through the first couple of chapters, you begin to put all the characters together, each one having a unique personality, be it good or evil. You begin to relate to each one. This is not a book that you will want to put down, once you start reading it. I found myself getting deeper and deeper with with each chapter. Mr.Robinson has a talent for keeping you on the edge, wanting to know what is going to happen next. It is very well written - you become so involved that you don't want to stop reading, until the book is finished. Being that this is T.S.Robinson's first novel, it is excellent reading - I can hardly wait until his next one is released.

"It was a good day to die." That's the first sentence of this book, and believe me, it sets the tone for what is to follow.

From page one, this book grabs you by the throat and drags you along through the filth, decay, and appalling aftermath of the death and destruction that is the sad result of a fierce battle. The setting is a big battlefield, and interestingly enough, the whole story takes place in a single day after the battle has ended. Not everyone on the battlefield is dead, though most are. But of those left alive, all have a purpose for living. Some have noble causes, others slink around looking for even more victims. This story tells you...excuse me, shows you what their objectives are, and what they do to accomplish them.

This is not your typical fantasy. For example, this is the first book I've read that has a cast including dragons, dwarves, vampires and even zombies to name a few. But it's a good story told very well. As you change chapters, you move back and forth among the characters and see the story from their eyes. On one page, you'll find yourself holding your breath as one person struggles desperately to stay alive, and a few pages down, you'll find yourself hoping the bad guy gets what's coming to him. Either way, you'll come to care for some of the characters. And don't worry, while the premise for the story seems dark, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

This book is just the way I like them -- the pace is fast, the action is furious, the scenes are described well, and the story is darned good. I recommend this book to fantasy lovers who want to try something a little different.

An incredible journey!!

Your heart begins to race as you join Ringlerun in his magnificent journey searching for vengeance. Suddenly, you feel the tug of compassion tug while soaring with Rhordanz. The author provides thought-provoking lessons in life for those who listen. T.S. Robinson, I anxiously await to join you on your next adventure.

I read (and owned) this whole series when they first came out, and got in the habit of buying extra copies to give deserving friends. Unfortunately I only still have the first three, due to the trials of moving :-(

It boggles my mind that they are no longer in print, as the wit and wisdom contained in these slender volumes belies the brevity of their format. I heard a rumor that they are going to go back into production sometime soon - if true I will probably buy a dozen of each for goft giving ;-)

The images are staged sets photographed with Hasselblad, the colours are very nice, the characters are sculpture made of clay. My daughter loves the book and always ask me to read it. It is based on a true story. I hope that Ms Von Buhler will make another one soon and that it will be translated in italian.

This is an absolutely delightful, touching story that is visually beautiful and cleverly executed. All of us cat lovers have experienced elusive cats that we would like to have closer to us. Friends of mine live in a Victorian house that looks a whole lot like the one in the story, and they have a cat in their yard they feed who won't come inside. (Fortunately we live in California so no snow to contend with, as in the book.) When I heard about this book in Cat Fancy magazine I bought it to give them but wanted to keep it too. You can't miss if you buy this book.

The Cat Who Wouldn't Come Inside is a touching story of trust, patience, friendship and love, thoughtfully written and exquisitely illustrated by Cynthia von Buhler with such warmth and detail that you feel like you too have been invited inside the charming Victorian home. The Cat Who Wouldn't Come Inside is the story of a little Victorian girl who leaves warm milk on her porch for a stray cat she invites inside, but the cat will not come in. Each day the girl leaves gifts for the cat on the porch, and again invites the cat inside. Each day the cat declines her invitation. Children will delight in the repetition of the story, while parents enjoy the artistry of the illustrations and the variation as the gifts build in grandeur from a simple bowl of milk to elaborate Victorian furnishings. With patience and time, the cat comes to trust the little girl and eventually shows her affection by inviting the little girl into the cat's home they have built on the porch. This storybook and the true story of Olympus, the stray cat von Buhler rescued which inspired her tale, will touch everyone's heart.

The Cat Who Wouldn't Come Inside is complemented by von Buhler's website, [...] which has been skillfully crafted to showcase her storybook with the same attention to detail and beautiful illustrations. Click on your mouse to discover personal information about von Buhler and the inspiration for her story, an inside look at the making of the book and the Victorian house (von Buhler's childhood dollhouse), step-by-step instructions for young readers to make and showcase their own clay kitty and reviews, and valuable information for saving other cats.

Both The Cat Who Wouldn't Come Inside and its complementary website, [...], are extraordinary!

Hopefully, this publication will encourage countless individuals to find the necessary reason and desire to give of their own time, talents, and hearts to those in need in our society. This book is not for beginners, and contrary to the reputation of O'Reilly press, this is not for experts.

The book uses a simple way to discribe many cases of things going bad. But it stays on the superficial layer of the problems.

The paradigm it uses is describe the problem, ways to prevent it, and how to get off the hook. This may seem very tempting to read because of the easy way to analyse the content of the cases. I like the 3 step aproach, but I didn't see and substance of the way she explained and the conjectures of details each process entails.

The book in general is a simpleton... and its boring.

Doing eBay Right

I was unable to find something I really needed from my usual sources, and turned to eBay for help. Sure enough, there it was! I was an eBay virgin, unsure and feeling very vulnerable. Should I try it?
This is exactly the point where "Don't Get Burned on eBay" comes in handy. Reading this book was like finding a good friend and a compass while wandering lost in the wilderness. I started out marking the impor-
tant points I came across but soon gave that up since there wasn't a lot that I didn't feel like underlining. It's crammed full of useful information.
One aspect that doesn't get enough play for the prospective reader in
my opinion is that the book not only tells you how to avoid the scams
and frauds, it also tells a newcomer how to buy and sell with the legiti-
mate people and do it right the first time. To me as a newbie, that was
just as important. And even if you read this and never do an eBay trans-
action, you will have likely learned something about mail-ordering from
anyone. This is a good reference that I will keep in my library.

A great resource for new and experienced eBayers alike.

I've been using eBay since 1999 as both a buyer and a seller. I was amazed at the amount of things I learned from this book. The policies at both eBay and PayPal have been updated significantly over time, and I'm sure like many other people, I was not aware of many of the changes. From tips on insurance and shipping to information on how to block and cancel bids, this book is valuable to any eBay seller. It also provides tons of information for buyers and sellers on how to avoid common scams associated with eBay. For example, I didn't realize that some people would actually switch a new item for an old and try to claim a return. I also didn't realize that eBay flat-out warns against using Western Union - and that even money orders are not secure in an age of easy counterfeiting.

The book is also filled with real stories of eBay snafus which clearly illustrate the author's points. In addition, the author's sense of humor makes the book a pleasure to read. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that is active in eBay - even if you don't read it cover-to-cover, it would act as a great reference guide.

This book should be mandatory reading for every person who buys OR sells on eBay. Both sides need to understand their rights and responsibilities clearly, and understand what exactly to do when things go wrong. In addition, both sides need to know common scams, common problems, the ins and outs of insurance and shipping, and common payment issues. This book covers every important issue clearly and concisely. EBay should give a copy to every new user, and give them a quiz before letting them bid or sell.

In addition to being clear, the author has a sense of humor, which makes this not only informative, but entertaining as well. The chapter layout makes it useful as a reference tool, to which the reader can turn when she has a question. The reader should read the whole book once, but afterwards, it is easily used to refer back to for specific questions or occurrences.

I'm a librarian in a university library, and I evaluate books all the time. For its purpose, this is one of the clearest and best I've seen.

Whether you've been using eBay for years or have been afraid to try it, lest you be ripped off, this book is an invaluable tool. Unlike other books that deal with online subjects, it's actually fun to read. The wit makes these tips and tales very easy to absorb and remember while bolstering your eBay confidence and savvy.

I've been using eBay since 1998 and I still picked up dozens of new things and now understand some of the more esoteric features of the site. When I lent the book to my mom, who has shyed from the site because she felt it was too risky, she proudly made two purchases using only the book as a guide. I wish all DIY and instruction style books were this much fun to read, I'd know how to do a lot more things if they were.

It paints a vivid picture of what it is like to be on a road of self destruction but recover to the point where one's life story can be told to others so that they would know that recovery is possible from emotional and sexual abuse for themselves.

They also teach an easily learned body-energy based method "Touch and Breathe" (TAB). Practicing this method as the easy-to-understand instructions detail, will release negative beliefs and with them, completely change your life. I know, this technique is one I practice and teach myself. I was very impressed by both the research as well as the straight talking explanations and extra tips and hints that made all the difference in artful use of TAB for personal issues. I recommend this book for those who are keen to dump problems, stress and overload. You couldn't have better teachers than these two authors, who are outstanding guides in what for most will be new, though exciting, territory. Buy this book today and start living the life you've always dreamed. When you have control of your beliefs, anything is possible!

This is the book I have been waiting for - a well written, comprehensive, yet simple, guide to a profound energy psychology technique - Touch And Breathe (TAB). It is the first book I now recommend to those patients who understand how vital it is to take true ownership of their healing. In the early chapters, Sheila Sidney Bender and Mary Sise impart to the reader their deep knowledge of the essential components of TAB:"the meridian gateway, mindfulness, touch, breath, intention and intuition." From then on, they give clear and practical advice on how best to apply this profound healing approach to a wide variety of common debilitating conditions whose roots so often lie within conditioned, false negative beliefs.
Reading this book, and applying its heart-felt advice to our lives, is a truly rewarding experience. I am honored that it has been published as a companion to my own book The Human Antenna: Reading the Language of the Universe in the Songs of Our Cells

Sheila Sidney Bender & Mary T. Sise, The Energy of Belief: Psychology's Power Tools to Focus Intention and Release Blocking Beliefs, Fulton, CA: Energy Psychology Press 2007.

This is an excellent book that delivers on the promise in its title, presenting clearly and convincingly the tools and methods that can identify and transform beliefs that block one's progress and satisfaction in life. Sheila Bender and Mary Sise have a very readable style that engages the reader's interest as it explains biological energy fields, blocking beliefs and how to deal with them.

Helpful nuggets that stand out include:

· Energy field perturbations (well known in the numerous therapy traditions as signs of problems), as well as elaters and harmonizers (positive aspects of energy fields);

· Energy field reversals (again, well known in the Energy Psychology) and energetic belief reversals that can block progress;

· Self-testing for energetic belief blocks.

The scripts and diagrams for using the Touch and Breathe method, supplemented with richly illustrated case examples provide a clear understanding of how to apply these methods. This book is warmly recommended to those who are seeking methods for self-healing.

A powerful and user-friendly way to use Energy Psychology

The Energy of Belief is an eye-opening and informative read for both professionals and non-professions alike on a powerful energy psychology treatment. Psychologist, Sheila Bender, and Social Worker, Mary Sise, have written an easy to "read, learn and do" book that brings the gentle, energetic power of the Touch-and-Breathe (TAB) treatment approach literally to your finger tips.

The Energy of Belief provides an easy to understand scientific foundation of energy, intention, vibrational frequencies, and fields relative to Eastern and Western medical views as they relate to the concept of mind and mind-body-energy interactions. Thought and beliefs are described as detectible energetic elements that impact our emotional and physical being, which can unknowingly disrupt and block healing treatments despite our best intentions. The authors discuss the relative importance of body polarity, how to assess and correct polarity when needed, and its essential value as a guide in successful treatment.

Bender and Sise provide numerous illustrations, charts, learning exercises, and photos as they outline step-by-step procedures for generic (algorithm) and individualized use of TAB to treat the most common to the most elusive and self-sabotaging issues that challenge our lives. Whether you desire to recover from traumatic experiences or self-defeating habits, this book offers a powerful avenue to address all contributing beliefs that may have served to block your previous efforts to change and heal and offer the best opportunity for success.

If you are new to the area of "Energy Psychology" and meridian-assisted treatments, or have training and experience in TFT and EFT, you will find this book to be a valuable resource and reference regarding content, clarity, and ease of application. Of considerable importance is the protocol for treating positive emotions and beliefs that hook a person into repetitive and self-sabotaging behaviors in order to feel better.

As the originator of the Touch-and-Breathe (TAB) treatment and lead author of Evolving Thought Field Therapy from which this book is derived, I found The Energy of Belief to be a "must have" in understanding and applying energy psychology treatments. Dr. John Diepold www.TFTworldwide.com

I couldn't put this book down. I read it at the perfect time for me. I've studied and taught the Bible for decades from a Christian viewpoint, but I've always been drawn to the connection between Judaism and Christianity. This curiosity has led me to spend more and more time in the Old Testament, or Tanach. This book is the account of another Christian Bible student with a similar attraction to Jewish thought; however, Dickson went directly to the source and attended regular study sessions at a local synagogue. Through this book I have been stretched intellectually and spiritually in ways that are brand new to me. My resolve to learn more on these subjects is stronger than ever. I've even signed up for Hebrew lessons at a local synagogue. I am excited about the possibilities of future spiritual growth as I dig deeper into the Scriptures revered by Jesus and his disciples.

I loved it!!!

This was a great read. Highly recommended.

The book reads smoothly, uses comfortable language, and flows in a logical way. Dickson employs several mini-stories throughout the book to introduce and illustrate the subject matter of that chapter.

Dickson touches an area of Christianity which is desperately needed. We embrace so much of our faith without having any knowledge of its roots or foundation in Judaism. Christianity and Judaism are not synonymous. They have significant differences, and Dickson does not ignore these differences, or try to homogenize the two faiths. But they ARE similar, and Dickson does a great job of showing just how so many of the themes in Christianity overlap with those of Judaism, even if that doesn't appear to be the case at first glance. Most of Dickson's focus is not on the minutiae differences of Christianity and Judaism, but is on the larger elements of our faiths, including the differences in how we approach our faith, and how we answer the hard-to-answer questions.

Allow me to share my favorite aspect of the book. Dickson discusses, in detail, the difference in the way Christians and Jews deal with difficult questions about our faith. I grew up in the church, Dickson is correct in characterizing the way most Christians answer those questions: we often try to make them seem less difficult than they really are, and look to some pre-fabricated answer found in our "ways to answer those questions" manual. Many questions are off-limits as quasi-heretical, meaning that we often never quite satisfactorily examine the things in our faith we struggle with. By Contrast, according to Dickson, no question is off-limits for Jews, and they embrace difficulties and questions concerning their faith. I believe more Christians should react like the latter. We should be willing to ask questions--the answers in our manual may be correct, but we should be willing to go and see.

One of the things that make this book so good is its ability to make you think-it encourages you to examine what you believe. You will find yourself pondering the things you read throughout the day. I cannot agree with everything that Dickson asserts in the book, and there are some areas in which I felt he could have elaborated and discussed more thoroughly. But the book DID make me think, and it did have an effect on what I think about a couple of issues. If you read this book, and consider the things discussed in it, there is a fair chance that your view on an issue or two will be tweaked in some way too.

The book is great. The book is easy to read, and enjoyable. While I still don't necessarily agree with everything Dickson says, those things are rather minute and mostly insignificant. People interested in the subject matter should definitely read the book. I am confident that you'll enjoy the book, and that you'll be glad you bought it.

So, What's the Difference?

This was neat. But in saying that, it was by no means at all, a light read. Athol Dickson made you think. A great writer of fiction, he writes great stories, with a message. But when he wrote, "The Gospel According to Moses," he is to be taken very seriously. Upon joining a Chever Torah group, his faith was challenged. And his faith was ultimately strengthened. He wasn't afraid to address difficult questions.

When I read this, Dickson wasn't afraid to to discuss what a Christian believes, opposed to what a Jew might think. And he wasn't afraid to apply Torah and Bible scripture. He takes examples in The Bible like Moses and Abraham, and events in their lives. He begins by stating, "Life's most important moments are often disguised as the commonplace." In this case, in the situation that Athol Dickson knowingly put himself into, that is most certainly true. Did he expect to be challenged? Possibly. He wasn't afraid to expose the differences. Or was he? Where does Jesus fit in this? You'll know soon enough.

So, if you want a few of the topics that Dickson addresses in a nut shell, I'll give a few. In the opening chapter, Dickson talks about dealing with doubts. He'll talk about why God lets us suffer. He'll discuss finding connections between obedience and grace. And in the final chapter, he'll ask a real tough one: Are Jews going to Hell? He discusses a lot of other stuff as well. The topics are 13 chapters total. I would dare to say, give this a try. If you have tough questions, then maybe this has the answer. Will it give you satisfying results? Only you can answer that.

Is this possibly a "Jesus Freak Among the Jews" account? Quite possibly, and a little more. It was awesome.

Based on insights gained from his experience as a Christian guest in a Reform Judaism Bible study, Dickson offers his thoughts about God, scripture, and interfaith misunderstandings--such as the relationship of faith to obedience, grace to works. 'The Gospel According to Moses,' one of the most refreshing books I've read in a while, has caused me to study the Jewishness of the Christian faith, which in turn has brought new depths of understanding of and awe for God and the Bible--and more questions to contemplate and explore.
