A must read for Ford enthusiasts. A wealth of information on all the Ford conversions that I know of except Roadless which was given it's own book. I was expecting more than a brief mention of Weatherill. Just like Gibbard's Roadless book, an abundant supply of photographs.

A sobering study of human response to the unexplained.

The northern lights show up much farther South than usual, so far South in fact, that no one recognizes them as northern lights. With that brilliance in the night sky, it must be that the world is coming to an end. The panic and the reactions of the characters are every bit as intriguing as those of the passengers of the Titanic. I cannot believe that no one else has come forward to review this Kentucky classic by one of this century's greatest Agrarian writers.

excelent primer on STM/AFM design fundamentals

Smith & Chetwynd's book covers many of the fundamental design considerations for ultraprecision devices. This is done from a physiscist's perspective starting with a discussion of the basis for simple beam ananlysis. It proceeds through optimal constraint and flexure design, along with actuator and detector selection. Simplified design examples are included. Finally, a selection of construction materials along with their physical properties are presented, along with a discussion of optimization on that basis.

Written by a pastor, for a pastor
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-11
This is a book written for pastors by a pastor. Its purpose is to help out "fresh air' back into preachers who may have grown tire or stale in their preaching. Briscoe's promise is that pastors need help in a media soaked culture. Surrounded by pulpit "superstars" local pastors are finding it increasingly difficult to "deliver the goods" to their churches. Briscoe covers the full range of preaching from the preacher's attitude and preparation to the delivery of sermons.

By far the greatest strength of this book is that the author recognizes and expounds on the role of the Holy Spirit in the act of preaching. The pastor is anointed by God to be His spokesmen. Thus, he is to expect something supernatural to happen in the very act of preaching, "When the word is preached in power, progress is one of the inevitable results." I also appreciate that he addresses character issues- that we are to be men of the Word, studying, mediating, praying and walking in the Spirit. Briscoe has the confidence to laugh at himself (preaching a sixty week series on I Corinthians). He is also very pragmatic, taking the read step by step through the process of sermon preparation and proclamation.

The only thing I gook issue with was chapter 9, "The Predictable and the Unpredictable." His premise is good: Each worship service should have predictable elements presented in unpredictable ways. Yet, the examples he gives seem to be novelty for novelty sake. His word of worship (pg. 83) reflects the traditional order of worship that Rutz (The Open Church) attributes to Martin Luther. If Briscoe really wants unpredictability in the worship service, why did he choose an order of worship that is the same "week after week, month after month, year after year, decade after decade, generation after generation, world without end, amen?" c.f., Rutz, pgs. 61. Briscoe's advice to combine different worship styles within a given worship service is suspect, very few people can make it work.

Aside from these minor problems, this is an excellent book for any preacher. Great book on preaching.

Concise short reading

Though it doesn't cover some aspects in depth, it covers things overlooked by other books. Interesting descriptions and good recomendations: aquarium themes regarding fish and their natural enviroment, aquarium plants characteristics and needs (highly recommended to prevent algae when you place an aquarium near a window), notes on fish "hardness" and temper. Plenty of full color pictures all over the book. It worth the price. I also recommend Community Fish from the same author as a companion reading.

Spiritual Survival for Law Enforcement is a great book. I believe that the book very clearly articulates what we as police chaplains attempt to convey to police officers in the field. Spiritual Survival for Law Enforcement is a must read for all Law Enforcement officers.

A Real Gem
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-18
I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I opened this book, but what a Gem it turned out to be. A collection of Prose and Poetry written within a range of styles around the themes of friendship and relationships.

The book is written with an aching honesty about the author's experiences, that immediately draws you in, and rather than just identifying with the author, begins to make you really think about your own life and your own actions and intentions. At first glance it may appear deceptively simple and almost naïve, but in actuality this book uses this simplicity as a method of stealthily delivering the point behind our own blasé and defensive attitudes. You soon start to realise this book has a lot of levels and that each reveals something else you hadn't consciously realised about your attitudes or feelings.

This book is very therapeutic, especially if you've ever been hurt or let down by others in this arena.

Overall, if you want to be challenged and provoked into thinking about the whole subject of friendship take a chance on this - A superb read!

The political emphasis, along with tactics and insights on choices, makes for an important, revealing guide
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

Over one and a half million Jews left the Soviet Union from 1987-92, when it ended: this account of their movement surveys the strategies of the Israeli and American Jewish establishments in moving these citizens to new places. FROM EXODUS TO FREEDOM: A HISTORY OF THE SOVIET JEWRY MOVEMENT surveys the movement before 1985 and in America as well as the Soviet Union, tracing its evolution, basic concepts, and political splits which caused it to change and face troubles. The political emphasis, along with tactics and insights on choices, makes for an important, revealing guide.
