Prosopography is the study of pedigree, biography, and genealogy, especially among royal and noble families (i.e., those of power and influence in society), including the study of family names, and focusing especially on the person, his environment and his social status -- that is, the individual within the context of family and other social groups, the place or places in which he was active, and the function he performed within his society. Keats-Rohan is director of the Unit for Prosopographical Research at Linacre College, Oxford, and this project is an heroic attempt to synthesize the genealogy of families in the first century following the Conquest and the histories of the manors which they either owned or labored on. For "only by determining the identities of persons concealed in a repetitious mass of names in the text of Domesday Book can we hope to understand what happened next, or who was who in subsequent records such as the Pipe Rolls." Domesday Book contains some 45,000 personal names, many of them duplications since tenants-in-chief held land in several counties. If you also leave out the churches (as tenants) and the surviving English tenants, fewer than 20,000 names remain, and about 8,000 of those are identified by forename alone. The author has analyzed 19,500 records of continental names into about 2,500 individual persons, including some 200 tenants-in-chief and about 600 Englishmen. Their entries, which make up the bulk of this large volume, range from a single sentence (Harduin was a"Domesday tenant of William fitz Nigel under earl Hugh in Chester") to several pages for those at the top. Citations to appearances in Domesday Book itself, as well as in later charters and other sources, are very complete. The descendants of the great men whom the new king made tenants-in-chief became the great barons of the English feudal system, and nearly all of them appear here. For instance, Eudo Dapifer, son of Hubert de Ryes, married Rohais, daughter of Richard de Clare. One of Eudo's tenants in 1086 was Osbert, husband of his sister Muriel. Eudo also acquired the land previously held by his brother, Adam, who was a tenant of Bishop Odo. Farther down the social ladder were men like Herbrand de Sackville, tenant of Walter de Giffard, who had sons named Jordan, William, and Robert, and a daughter named Avice, who married Walter d'Auffay. The author also has included seventy-five pages of background history and prosopographical methodology, which make this work very accessible to the non-specialist. This is apparently the first published installment (there are also several online databases) of an extraordinary and fascinating enterprise which should open new avenues of research for those interested in medieval English genealogy.

The work of a genius

It's hard to find words which do justice to these wonderful plays. Schiller is a genius, a german Shakespeare. The plays are full of fascinating characters, deep emotions and humanist ideals. Don't be surprised if you find youself sympathising with and understanding the enemys of the heroes. In Philipp II and Elizabeth I the inner torments of rulers surounded by false friends (Leichester, Alba), idealists(Posa, the spirit of liberty and friendship) and caught in there own fears, hopes and loves is poignantly illustrated. All in wonderfull words - read it in german if you possibly can! If you can't, DON'T miss it in english!!! You may find yourself identifying the situations in your life with those of the characters. These are plays to read over and over - always something new and worthwhile to discover.

From Leger ,Davis was re-inforced to the importance of drawing. When Davis said drawing I think he meant design. After learning the traditional academic drawing ,he used mechanical drawing to develope his paintings. This book offers ample illustration and text to show the working methods of this important American.

This deck has one important feature - it is easy to shuffle! While many cards are beautifully tailored for framing (it seems), this card is truly for your use. I love the pliancy of this card, and the images are intuitive to interpretation. I highly recommend it for beginners.

The best book on the subject of agricultural drip irrigation
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 1999-02-07
Anyone wanting to learn how to design agricultural drip irrigation systems should definitely read and use this book. I have been designing ag drip/micro systems for nearly ten years and this is the best and most practical book I have seen on the subject. Has excellent coverage of hydraulics as well as filtration and the design of flushing manifolds. Also has lots of practical information gleaned from grower panels and interviews with top people in the industry. This book is used as a text by the Irrigation Association in its training programs for those preparing to take its Certified Drip/Micro Irrigation Designer exam.

New insight from some well-known academics

This one's great. It provides a fresh look at e-commerce and how businesses organize their virtual operations. It goes beyond the hype of guru texts and looks at real examples and frameworks to help understand them. Whilst I haven't really heard of some of these examples, others are well known - like KLM. It has academic depth, if that's what you want, and contributions from some famous and less well known professors.

Interesting and Enlightening

Review Date: 2007-03-25

This is a comprehensive, enlightening and interesting book for pupils around 13-14 years of age or third year of secondary school. The book is well illustrated which help the student gain a mental picture of what things were like during the early modern age in various countries and regions of the world. Questions at the end of the chapter are a good revision aid and reinforce the understanding of the subject.

This is a well written book in clear and simple English that is easy to follow and understand that is well worth having.
