First of all, I checked this book out at the library. I fell immediately under its spell at the library while reading the first few pages. It is full of fantastic information, articles, how-to's and so much more.

I am a Usui Reiki Master and practice many forms and types of healing and therapies. I am a licensed surgical nurse (self-retired) and find this book to be a fantastic read and learning experience for all practitioners of healing methods.

It covers the techniques, manipulations and aromatherapy used in practices today.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK...KEEP IT IN STOCK!

This is a great reference on composite materials. It details almost everything that a person designing composites would need. It can be a bit bland to read, but it is full of valuable information. The only thing that it may lack is example calculations for the design of composite structures, but the theory is all there.

Galleons and Arquebuses - Oh My!
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-10
On the one hand, this book is a meticulous reconstruction of a now almost apocryphal event: the Defeat of the Spanish Aramada. On the other hand, it is a finely told story of suspense and adventure. And finally, it is a superb tale of the days when Spain was the Master of the World, England was hanging on by its fingernails, and wooden ships were not yet the miracles of technology that they later came to be in the days of Nelson.

I love the detail and connections in this book! For example, the author of Don Quixote, Cervantes, was involved in events leading up to the Spanish Armada(s). We learn more about Elizabeth I's (told from a decidedly UNsympathetic historian's point of view) and Sir Francis Drake's (who comes off as a superbly competent though self-interested risen-from-the-common-ranks adventurer) roles. We learn MUch more about Phillip II, King of Spain and effective secular Master of the Western World (until, that is, the defeats of his Armadas).

Sailing in the 1500's was so much a matter of luck, timing, logistics, weather, and fortitude. New naval technologies and strategies were in their infant states. The Spanish had the popular vote to win. The English had the technology (guns and gunnery) if only they had the food. Poor planning on the Spanish side and supremely fortunate timing on the English side managed to counteract English budget frugalities and supplier shenanigans.

In the end it is a rip-roaring story, all the more enthralling for the details. Hanson builds the story masterfully: element by element, personality by personality, circumstance by circumstance... from Phillip's "brainstorm" to invade England, to the climactic sequence of battle encounters as both fleets were pushed along the English Channel by wind and storm.

It's hard indeed to remember how uncertain setting sail was back then. This was the same era as the setting of Clavell's "Shogun" book - Blackthorne the devil-take-all English pilot and his precious navigation Rutters. Galleons and Arquebuses ruled back then. Oh my!

He's an excellent writer and professor...His work must be taken in small increments, and be absorbed. Very worthwhile reading. Dragan is one of the better writers in dealing with sociology, semiotics and law. This is a must-have. I have also read several works that Stuart Henry has contributed to...he's a plethora of information as well.

A deep analysis on corporate reputation
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-06
This is really a comprehensive book on corporate reputation. This book is divided into two parts. Part one dealing with reputation as a strategic approach and part two dealing with managing corporate personality.
This book gives a deep new paradigm on how to manage corporate reputation. The study cases in this book really give real-world examples of managing corporate reputation.
This book provides analysis on corporate repuation not only of usual corporate, but also of merged-corporation.
A really good and useful book!

This book on Model-Based Depth Imaging is the best that I've read in years. As a passionate Geologist, I would recommend this book to anyone who not only has a career in geology, but also just a passing intrest in Model-Based Depth Imaging. It reads more like a novel. I could barely put it down! A MUST READ!

4 1/2* Round Up!
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-02
A group of coyotes wearing bright Hawaiian shirts (and a non-conformist in plaid) satisfy their mathematical and gustatory appetites in this clever "Mathstart" series book (Level 2; ages 6 and up). The Coyotes -- Clever, Cool, Careful, Clumsy, and young Little One--look out over the desert from the porch of their ranch. There are roadrunners everywhere, but no subpoenas. (The book judiciously omits crates labeled "ACME" label, or coyotes named "Wile E.") "'There must be hundreds of them!' said Cool Coyote." The coyotes separate to verify this, but Clever Coyote (after failing to catch a running roadrunner) claims, "I bet I can do it in my head and come really close." When Clever Coyote rounds the individual number counts to the nearest ten and adds them, his estimate is only two more than the actual count. In similar fashion, the coyotes compare their counts and rounded estimates of tasty grasshoppers and zebra-tailed lizards.

Steve Bjorkman paints his desert with soft shades of purple and dotted browns. Large green cacti break up this landscape, and the Hawaiian-shirted coyotes (wearing shades, sipping lemonade, chasing prey) give a playful air to the rounding lesson. Bjorkman's splashy, colorful style extends to the lizards, one of which peers at the reader from the bottom of the page. There's one very annoying discontinuity; however, and it's not possible to tell whether this is due to the illustrator, author, and/or publisher. On pp.14-15, Clever Coyote comments (about the lizards): "There can't be that many" and "Why don't you count them and see?" However, Clever Coyote is not pictured on the 2-page spread. One could also quibble over the implication that the coyotes' rounding is faster than adding. The book doesn't really compare adding rounded versus unrounded numbers, nor does it compare counting vs. estimating. As set up here, the coyotes' exact counts precede the rounding estimate; apparently, methods of estimating are beyond the book's scope.

Still, author Stuart J. Murphy presents the general topic clearly and in an entertaining manner. He gives the animals human personalities, while retaining--at least in Clever Coyote-their animal habits. On each spread, Murphy includes "factoids," information about coyotes and the desert environment (e.g., "Factoid: Roadrunners can fly, but they usually run. They can go as fast as 25 miles an hour.") These facts could lead to some interesting discussions about biomes, food chains, etc. The last two pages restate the rounding rules ("numbers that end in 5 or higher should be rounded up), and present several school and home activities to reinforce the concept.

A Man Like Us

For me, Bataille's Skira book "The Birth of Art" is his most beautiful book. For that reason, this volume is most welcome. Translator Stuart Kendall has written an excellent introduction. There are, I think, roughly two kinds of readers of Bataille: those who love the Eye and don't have much time for his philosophy, and those who focus on the latter, tending to read his artistic works through an academic lense. In some of his works the 'two Batailles' come together, works like "Guilty" and "Inner Experience", but mostly "The Birth of Art". Some of the magic of that book can be found in the Cradle of Humanity essays. Bataille's writing, at its best, becomes an adventure that parallels the sense of wonder one experiences when contemplating ancient art. We are fascinated by that ancient artist. Bataille understands that our search for him is equivalent to the search for ourselves.
