American Labor's Opportunity
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-22

In this edited examination of central labor councils in the United States Ness and Eimer provide a comprehensive examination of the challenges and opportunities that the U.S. labor movement has in activating the dormant labor councils. The writers demonstrate that U.S. labor councils have a long history that veer from their counterparts elsewhere, they represent powerful building blocks toward a stronger workers movement.

Now that the U.S. national unions are examining structure once again, they must take note of the work of this book, which is as relevant today as ever. Unions simply will not expand through using their leverage unless they view see labor in its new iteration--one that is dispersed throughout metropolitan regions. Perhaps the most daring AFL-CIO effort is the restructuring of its own house. The editors and writers of this book provide a field guide on how to transform unions and build worker power. This book provides concrete studies of Los Angeles, Milwaukee, King Conty (Seattle) and San Jose and Silicon Valley.

Among the contributors are the leading analysts of American labor today: Stephanie Luce, Immanuel Ness, Joel Rogers, and Stewart Acuff.

A seminal work for grad students in rhetoric and technical communication

When I first read this book four years ago in a graduate-level course in rhetoric and professional communication, I admit that I was out of my depth. I didn't know who any of the writers were and I thought academic journal articles were really tough to read. Now I'm working on a dissertation in professional communication and I've realized that most of the articles in this book are in my reading list and will end up in my literature review. The articles have been reprinted in their entirety and each one is prefaced with a reflection by the author.

If you are teaching a grad-level class in professional communication theory or writing and analyzing professional documents, then this is the book you need.

Drama & Tragedy Better Than Hollywood Could Ever Create

I bought this book after a trip to England, trying to figure out how Charles had so mismanaged his relationship with the House of Commons that he became the only British King to literally be killed by it. This book takes you on an amazing journey. Charles disguises himself and slips out of England, going to Madrid to check out a potential bride in Spanish Royalty. It doesn't work out, and soon after he marries Henrietta Maria of France. She speaks French, and is Catholic. He, of course, is the great defender of the Church of England. Yet they grow to love each other. But in these Puritan times, there are many who are anti-Catholic, and who think that Charles will make the island nation Catholic. The Scots want him to make it Presbyterian.

His fights with the House of Commons lead to the English Civil War, which the Royalists lose. But when the radicals in Parliament can't get what they want; approval of a court (with no legal footing) to try and then execute Charles, they do something that seems unthinkable today: they kick out everyone who voted against them. Now the fix is in, yet the judges summoned by Commons to participate, refuse. Still, as the drama builds, that does not stop those intent on killing the king. Amazing Charles handles his last months of life with great dignity, once turning his back to his advisors so they will not see his tears fall. The day before his beheading, he is allowed to see his children, in scene that is emotional for any parent to read. What happened in London in a bleak January in 1649, and all the events leading up to it, create a story that should be read by everyone in the United States and Great Britain.

Chemistry of the Carbonyl Group
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-16
A program for first and second year undergraduates in organic chemistry. This programmed text is written so that the student can teach himself the principles of carbonyl chemistry starting from the simplest addition reactions and ending with highly sophisticated syntheses. The approach is mechanistic and the book attempts to stress the logic behind carbonyl chemistry and to show how the basic principles applied in this field are also relevant in other areas of organic chemistry. The program may therefore be used as a text in the teaching of the principles of organic reaction mechanisms in general.

There are no multiple choice questions; the student is set a continually advancing challenge to his own competence. He is told what he needs to know before he starts, and each chapter has a list of new concepts required as previous knowledge.

This epic tale of the South spans fifty years, beginning with the appointment of the first police chief in Delano, Georgia, in 1919 and the first of a series of disappearances that will baffle police for half a century. Mark Hammer gives a slow, judicious impression to the story of Will Henry Lee's career as police chief, the long period of racial tensions, the election of Lee's son to governor and the appointment of the South's first black police chief, who ultimately solves the earlier disappearances.

Drawing on his backround in Great Britin and the US, Briscoe explains in simple terms how values have become "relative" and how it effects our life. Briscoe uses wit, wisdom, the scriptures (mostly Proverbs) and current events to carefully explain the way to a better life, with God. I highly recommend this book to the young people of our country. The book changed my life, and my understanding of God.

Mr Maxwell-Stuart having thoroughly investigated the "Vicars of Christ"
presented for all to see the human side of the men who direct the
Catholic Church. After reading only a small portion thus far, I better understand as will everyone, that being Pope takes courage, determination,
and the skills of a first class diplomat to direct such a world wide
organization.

Superb survey of the Tudor monarchs!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-11
This is the final book in a series profiling the Plantagenet and Tudor Kings of England. David Loades, the editor, is a professor of History at the University College of North Wales and a leading authority on the Tudor Kings. Loades assembled a team of leading authorities to write 80 short essays on the Tudor Kings and the people, politics, manners, mores and customs of Tudor England. Contemporary chroniclers describe the key events in each monarch's reign in vivid detail.

This book is beautifully illustrated with 150 color and black and white illustrations and is accompanied by a detailed genealogical table covering the Tudor succession. The book also features four maps, a guide to the peers, a glossary and a bibliography of late 20th century books on the period.

I highly recommend this book and the others in the series to anyone interested in medieval history. The other books in the series (all edited by Elizabeth Hallam are: The Plantagenet Chronciles; Chronicles of the Age of Chivalry (also published under the title Four Gothic Kings) and The Wars of the Roses. Chronciles of the Crusades follows the same same superb format.
