Hungers and Compulsions: something to chew on!Review Date: 2002-08-14
While the book is targeted primarily at professionals in the fields of psychology/psychiatry, etc., as a lay person, I find myself reading it "compulsively" (if you'll excuse the pun), since it offers fascinating insights into areas which may touch our lives or the lives of those we know -- hunger disorders, cigarette smoking, alcoholism and drug addiction, etc.
The book also explores the patient-therapist relationship, from unique vantage points: often that of the therapist and his or her own needs or the analysis of a literary character's behavior.
If you are looking for substantive summer reading, I think you'll find it dulce et utile. After reading the first few chapters, I was shocked to find myself in the exercise room for the first time in my life! Perhaps it was the image of the coughing cigarette smoker or the patient who yanked and ate her hair. Hopefully, it will inspire others towards positive change, as well.

The only "diet" book you'll ever need.Review Date: 2005-06-14

The best book ever!Review Date: 2001-08-31
The charaters are devolped very well, you get to know each one. Sabre, Lady Tybar, hi! and lo! Jinks, etc, they all become your friends. The town of Tidborough and the "Penny Green Garden House Development" become places you visited.
The begining was a little hard for me to get through, because I only could read it in between classes so I got it in small amounts, but once I got pass the first chapter I couldn't put it down.
It starts with a married couple, (Mark) Sabre and Mabel. Sabre works for "Furtune, East, and Sabre, Ecclesiastical and Scholastic Furnishers and Designers" where he rides his bike to everyday.
The story goes on and Sabre's old friend, Nona, shows up. Sabre is in love with her.
Then WWI starts and all the men are leaving for war. All but Sabre. He trys many times to sign up, but never passes the medical test. Then as the war goes on and England needs more men, they finially take him. During the war, Sabre gets hurt. [I believe that he loses his leg, but it may just be injured] So he is sent home.
His wife and he split. For he was never happy in the relationship to begin with.
To reveal the rest of it would ruin the ending. It's an ending that you don't really think will happen. I read the last page before I started the book [I sometimes do this] and knowing the last page still didn't tell me a thing that was going to happen.
This book is written so well. I first read it in 10th grade and and have been in love with it ever since. I recommend it to everyone.

Informative Overview Of Japanese Fantastic CinemaReview Date: 2003-08-03
Galbraith writes in a breezy and humorous fashion, providing detailed , often witty synopses and brief critical examinations of over one hundred titles, covering any/all films released in the U.S. during the period 1950 - 1992. As such, it affords an excellent historical background to the current and much heralded renaissance of Japanese cinematic horror. Of particular interest is Galbraith's refusal to instantly demean any of the films on hand. He takes the films cultural and artistic differences from the U.S. norm at face value and attempts to succinctly explain any appeal each individual movie might have. This is not to say that some of the titles don't get mercilessly slammed--they do, deservedly so. Its just that Galbraith tends to provide a much more thoughtful critique than the usual "Bad Special Effects, Terrible Dubbing" mantra so often spewed out by xenophobic American-based reviewers.
The book's final one hundred pages are devoted to a remarkably detailed filmography, with full cast and technical crew credits to every film discussed in the main text. As the author notes, this is easily the most extensive such listing of Japanese fantasy films ever put into print. The filmography in itself makes the book an unqualified necessity for fans of the genre.
ATTENTION DAIKAIJU EIGA FANS: You Need This Book !Review Date: 2000-04-13
Absolutely ANY Daikaiju eiga film released in the U.S. that you can remember (...and some that you no doubt have forgotten about! ) are described in this book. From the studios of Toho and Daiei, you will find ALL of the 20+ Godzilla and 7+ Gamera films as well as EVERY other sci-fi movie made by the incredible team of Tomoyuki Tanaka, Ishiro Honda and Eiji Tsuburaya (producer, director and SFX master of the original Godzilla films). Some of the lesser known but still wonderful films discussed include The Mysterians; Attack of the Mushroom People; Kwaidan; Onibaba; The Magic Serpent; Majin Trilogy; Atragon; The H-Man; War of the Gargantuas and Frankenstein Conquers the World.
With 424 pages laid out chronologically, Mr. Galbraith provides in-depth detail on more than 103 films including storyline, actors and their roles, production background, release notes and comments from contemporary reviews. Also included is a filmography of the genre from all Japanese studios including cast, crew and Japan/U.S. release information. A rather large bibliography and index complete this masterful work. This book was obviously written with great love and affection for the films at hand - I am quite sure that Daikaiju eiga fans will not be disappointed with their purchase of this book!

I was attracted to the book because I am a writer and it contains a section about creativity and addiction which I found extraordinarily insightful.
This book makes excellent reading and is also a useful tool for self-examination.
