This is one of the first apologies of the raison d'etre of the Church of England and why it is neither Roman Catholic nor
Reformed in the way the Protestant churches on the continent were. Jewel came after Cranmer, but before Hooker and should
be considered one of the architects of Anglicanism even as he envisioned a Reformed Catholic Church of England.

John Jewel wrote his Apology in the mid 16th Century in support of the nascent Church of England. In it, he deftly expresses
that the foundation for the Church of England as a separate entity from the Roman Catholic Religion is not a novelty but is
found in the Scriptures, in the writings of the church Fathers and in the early Church and even Jewish tradition.
For Jewel, he and the Church of England were remaining faithful to the faith handed down from Jesus, the apostles and church Fathers. It was the Roman Catholics and not the Reformational Christians that had rebelled and turned from the true faith. Jewel and others saw themselves as returning to the ancient faith based on Scripture.
He makes this solid case in his Apology by rarely making a point without referencing Scripture or a Christian Father or both. In that sense, this book serves as a Biblical Study and church history lesson. He also is adamant in attacking the practices of the Roman Catholic leaders and doctrines of religion that he saw as anathema to the gospel. These include the exaltation of the Pope, private masses, masses said in Latin, purgatory, indulgences and attacks on Protestants. His criticisms are targeted and are not necessarily anti-Roman Catholic; in fact, Jewel pleads for a blessed Christian relationship between the Roman Catholics and Protestants rather than animosity.
The case is made for the Protestant church then and Christians at anytime to separate themselves from the established religion when it represents doctrines of man in conflict with the ancient faith received from Christ and the apostles.
Jewel pulls no punches and is at times antagonistic. The writing is stimulating and enjoyable, while it is always enlightening. I think that Anglicans today would especially appreciate this book.
The copy I read was edited by John Booty and included helpful references. I do not know if all versions will include them or not; either way, the original text is excellent.

After reading Appalachian Values, I actually have a better understanding of myself and the culture that influenced my life.
I was always wondering why I have such different values from people that I work with in other areas. Loyal Jones not only
explains our time honored values but instills a sense of pride about a culture that is generally misunderstood due to media
portrayal. I have a true sense of pride and understaning of the ways of our culture after reading this book. Beautifully written
and photographed.

This is the ultimate treatise on the Waco "incident," the massacre that at rock bottom informs us of the limitations of our
government's ability to "uphold the Constitution" of the United States of America. Whether deliberately or by tom foolery,
men, women and children were burned to death because the BATF and the FBI failed in their mission to inform themselves of
what was at stake. The authors of the various essays in the book are well-informed, articulate and thoughtful souls who have
given great care in crafting their words. They have brought forth many of the troubling aspects of the Branch Davidian conflict
that the mainstream media did not even have the capacity to approach.
Do not be simple-minded about this issue. It is the seed from which there has been much trouble since (think Oklahoma City). It is important to understand Waco as much as is humanly possible in order for this country to get past it. Of all the books I have read so far on the subject, this one is by far the best.

Dr. Stuart Wright brings together experts in sociology, psychology, criminal justice, constitutional law, and the media to
analyze data collected, witness testimony, and survivor accounts of a tragedy in Texas. For anyone wanting the truth of what
really happened in Waco, this is a good start. The authors present a sociologically sound study of many of the dynamics
affecting the events in Waco. The Branch Davidian's orgin and what ultimately happened in Waco are also clearly detailed.

the one I'm thinking of, it was one of the best historical expositions I've seen, and explained much. Also very readable.

just skims, but covers the pertinent dates, figures, and works to get you going. i recommend the Masterplots series for in-depth
essays on these topics -- much better than those cliff notes which bore me.

I am currently studying to take the Oklahoma Teacher's Certification Exam in English. This book has really helped me. I
don't know what I would have done without it!!
When I began studying, I only had four weeks to study. Right now, I still have two weeks left, and I am actually starting to understand British/English literature. Please keep in mind; I have only had one literature class in my life, and I took it over 14 years ago. Basically, I was literature illiterate. This book has really help me a lot.
However, I must admit that I have done a lot of additional research. [...]
I also bought the American Literature EZ 101 because the exam will cover both areas. That book is equally as excellent as this one. By using those two books, by comitting to some serious study time, and by using wikipedia when I got stuck, I feel literate!!
I truly believe that this book is a good resource for self-study--if you're willing to study!! It WILL NOT give you every little detail; it is designed as a study guide to help you get through a college class where you actually have a teacher to help when you get "stuck". On the other hand, if you're looking for a study guide, I don't think you can beat it. It is excellent!!

Travelled for work to Benin and this book was great for my hobnobbing over the weekends. It is also very well written, my
parents, who were not travelling with me, read it too, just because it was so much fun to read. There are also details as
to who you can contact in a certain town for good guids, which I'm sure is useful. I did not make use of this and regret it.
Only negative, though you cannot really expect this from a travel book, is that the historical chapter is somewhat incorrect
and over-simplifying, but for that you would better get a history book. All in all, a great purchase for anyone going to
Benin.

your travel adventures in future travel guides.
