It seems everything Jesse Stuart wrote was a gem! In a literary world where there is lot of throwaway writing (thin plots, shallow intents, forgettable stories), here is an author who brought Appalachia alive for the world! I am from Ohio, and as a young boy (having a mother who was an English teacher who adored Jesse Stuart), met him while he was signing some of his books at Leslie's Drug Store in Greenup, KY (which always had a display of his books). He lived right up the road in W-Hollow. I told him how I loved his books and how I wanted to be a teacher like he had been. He was delighted and discussed teaching with my mother and my future career with me. We discussed characters from his books at length. I bought "Come Gentle Spring' and he happily signed it and we were on our way back to Ohio. Since then I've read everything he's written numerous times. I recently read 'Daughter of the Legend' again and it still moves me. No one brings out the color and beauty of the Appalachian Mountains and the people who live there more than Jesse. Without Jesse Stuart, one would probably think of Appalachia as a dirty, smelly region of in breds right out of 'Deliverance'. Jesse shows the gentle, romantic and humerous side of these mountain people: the smell of fresh cornbread baking on a woodstove or the beauty of red rhododendrons blooming on the hill and the warmth and passion of a square dance after a tobacco harvest. I love Jesse Stuart's world and anytime you can get your hands on one of his works, indulge yourself and enjoy!

I have been searching for this book for years and years.

I was raised on the ridge where this book takes place. These people were always real to me, and the way Mr. Stuart describes them is as true to form as possible. I read the book when I was a little girl and then again when I was in my teens, and for the last few years I have not been able to find it. I am happy to have the opportunity to let my kids read this treasured book. My son has actually been in the play that was adapted from the book. This book has been a part of my family's history since it was written, and being from the same places as the characters, and knowing the people of this community I am proud to say that I am a raised in the hills of East Tennessee, Newman's ridge runner.

Would make a great movie...

This is easily one of the most unappreciated classic books of all time. I'm not a big Jesse Stuart fan, but this story has stayed with me since childhood. I'm surprised Hollywood hasn't found it and ruined it yet.

I read this book as a child and loved it.

This book was so great that my 4 sisters read it and we talked about it all the time. My nieces heard so much about it they have read it as well. We talked like the Huntoons and picked out their strange names to call ourselves. I've looked for it for years but I was spelling Stuart wrong so I couldn't find it on the library shelves. Now I can sign it out again and read it and relive my childhood. I also want to read more about the Melungeons.

This is the most complete Book on this Subject, I have ever found. Mr. Harris did extensive research to compile such an informative and educational Book. I comand him, for his ideals, and even in a few areas, imagnation into reality.

Reliable and exact, are the only words I can use to refer to the excellance of the research that went into this work of Art. Every page has information described to perfection, the areas, locations, times, dates, descriptions of everything are so real, I felt I was there. I learned more, about Alabama than I will ever know, about my own Home State.

Thank YOU Mr. Harris; I spent hours re-reading your excellent work. Please, inform me of any future Publications by you. ( The Author )

Being an Alabama native, I found this book fascinating! I learned about towns, villages, and communities that I never knew existed. Some of them were very near my hometown. The book contained several types of dead town information. It told of former Indian villages, Spanish, French, British, and American settlements. The earliest date was an Indian village which began around 1200 and died about 1500. When the Spanish explorer and Conqueror, Desoto, came to Alabama, many of his findings were written down. Desoto found Alabama as it existed when the Indians were it's only residents. Harris gives many details of these early events. He also shares later stories of conflict between Indians and early settlers. When people think of Indian/American conflict, they usually think of the Wild West. There are great stories from Deep South too! He also shares stories and events from more modern towns that have failed to last. Some of them existed during the Civil War and some even existed into the twentieth century. Many of these are very interesting as well. If you do not live in Alabama, you might find the book boring. If you live here, you may find there is a Dead town very near you, waiting for you to explore.

Good, but very specialized reference

While this is an excellent study of Alabama's lost towns of old, I recommend it only for the most die-hard Alabama student/historian. The listings are well-presented and there is much esoteric historical information contained within the covers, but the average seeker of Alabama history tidbits should look for a more general reference.

A decent general and relatively recent Alabama history book is "Alabama The History of a Deep South State" (currently available from Amazon & other sources). Although I don't completely agree with a few of the subjective opinions/views expressed in this publication, I certainly consider it the best history of Alabama to have been published in the last 50 years and do indeed recommend it!

This is a great book to introduce young readers to the kaleidiscopic world of Benjmain Franklin because it follows his many discoveries to their present day outcomes. The writing style is clear but adult and readers familiar with the Franklin story will enjoy the author's ability to put his achievements into the context of his time and ours. No mean feat.

Resurrecting Franklin

Review Date: 2008-03-23
As is the case with Sigmund Freud, Charles Darwin, and a select few other notables, a thriving cottage industry exists for publications on Benjamin Franklin. And with so many books on Franklin, we can legitimately ask whether we really need another one, and whether even known things about this Founding Father can even be presented in a new way. Happily, the answer to these two questions is "yes," as shown by physician Stuart Green in new book, "Dear Doctor Franklin."

The subtitle of this book pretty much describes its novelty: "E-mails to a Founding Father about Science, Medicine, and Technology." Green's e-mails back and forth to the resurrected multidimensional Franklin cleverly allow us to see some of the scientific and medical issues that he dealt with during the long eighteenth century, and conversely how well his knowledge and ideas have withstood the test of time. As for the scope of his knowledge, while much has been written about what Franklin did to help us understand the nature of electricity, surprisingly little has been written about his many medical contributions and various ventures into sciences, such as chemistry, geology, meteorology and psychology.

With his training in medicine and obvious love of Franklin and his chosen subject matter, Green's book really is different from the myriad of other books on Franklin. Additionally, with the comments from Franklin and this author, we are provided with an enjoyable way to appreciate important dimensions of Franklin that are often omitted or glossed over by his many general biographers. For a very different and pleasurable take on one of the most fascinating men who ever lived, and one that will at the same time educate the uninitiated, this book is well worth reading.

Some of us are lucky in life to master one discipline. And probably content to do so. Clearly that was not the agenda of Benjamin Franklin, arguably the closest thing to a Renaissance Man since well, the Renaissance. Author, printer, politician, satirist, statesman, diplomat, educator, musician, bon vivant and most assuredly, scientist, Ben has rightfully earned his epithet of "Founding Father." It seems if there was something to find back in the 18th century, he found it.

What's so utterly charming about this Franklin book by Stuart Green (who happens to be a fellow doctor, scientist, globetrotter, photographer and Franklinophile) is it's sheer originality. Certainly the inventor of the lightning rod, bifocals, the eponymous Franklin stove, flexible urinary catheter, et al, would be just as conversant in today's web-based e-communications. After all, what Renaissance Man would be caught dead without email? Of course, given Old Ben's predilection for eternal entombment in a cask of madeira wine, one can speculate on whether he's not among us in the first place.

Hence, this book. Doctor Green to Doctor Franklin in an assortment of edifying, humorous, satirical email observations about the state of the scientific state over the past couple of hundred years is eye-opening, smile-inducing and just plain readable fun. It's like HG Wells' time-machine all over again. Only the machine is a laptop (one can only assume that Ben had an early design for this device as well; my hunch is it would have been a Mac).

It's science for both scientist and layman (count me in the latter) with a wonderful twist. Pull up a chair, pour yourself some madeira and dig in. It'll make you healthy, wealthy and wise.

Unusual premise, perfectly executed

There have been only a few people throughout history whose accomplishments were both very broad and very deep. One person that is rarely given the credit for the height and width of his achievements is Benjamin Franklin, he is generally well known only for his accomplishments as a statesman and diplomat. His negotiations with the French that led to their aid in the American war of independence turned what had been a stalemate into a colonial victory. However, beyond the story of his flying a kite in a thunderstorm, little about his scientific work is common knowledge. This is unfortunate, as Franklin was one of the most accomplished scientists of the eighteenth century.
The premise of this book is an unusual one. Franklin had noted that flies that drowned in Madeira wine could be revived later. Franklin had written, "I should prefer to any ordinary death, being immersed in a cask of Madeira wine . . . to be later recalled to life by the solar warmth of my dear country." Green opens with the supposition that Franklin was indeed entombed in a cask of such wine and has been successfully revived. The book is a collection of e-mails sent by the author to Franklin that are designed to bring him up to date with the scientific accomplishments since his "death."
Green does an excellent job of taking a statement made by Franklin and using it as the base for a description of the changes in scientific and medical thought since his death. Franklin was an extraordinarily broad thinker and in many cases he expressed skepticism about the medical practices and scientific theories of his time. In this way, Green is also demonstrating the breadth of Franklin's scientific curiosity and knowledge.
Green is on the Board of Directors of Friends of Franklin Inc., "An organization dedicated to promoting fellowship, learning and the spirit of Benjamin Franklin." This book certainly achieves that aim.

As a high school student, I have always been reluctant to reading many books. After a friend of mine recommended this book, I decided to give it a shot. I could not have asked for more in a book; reading it has been a great experience. Dr. Fischer has included many useful ideas that one could use when emergencies occur. He has included 40 of the most common emergencies that many people are forced to deal with daily. In dangerous situations, I now know to remain calm and react to these situations in the best ways possible. I feel safer now and always carry this book around with me. It was a great book, and i definitly recommend it to everyone.

The best all-around medical emergency book has got to be this one. It dispels any medical myths you might have, and it will help you identify what is really wrong with you, instead of worrying about what it might be.

Just about every common medical emergency is in there, from the correct way to treat a nosebleed, to how to figure out if your child has appendicitis, to knowing when back pain is serious. I wouldn't go on a family vacation without it, and it personifies my motto: "Always Be Prepared."

A new benchmark in ecological awareness. Sym van der Ryn has long been practicing ecological design, and draws on his wealth of experience to give readers many valuable insights into this growing practice. Van der Ryn warns readers to separate the wheat from the chaff as there are many persons claiming to be toeing the line when it comes to sustainable design, but few are actually doing it. What is needed is a whole new approach to eco-friendly architecture and planning development, not just more band-aids.

The book takes a fairly general approach but there are numerous references for those really interested in pursuing the subject in more depth. He outlines his principles of ecological design which begins with gaining a better awareness of your locality, by looking into the ecological history of your community. Who knows your street may be where a stream once flowed, and that your storm drain in all likelihood flows into your water source, so be careful what you dump into it!

Van der Ryn avoids the cliches and pieces together a compelling set of anecdotes and observations which will open you up the broad field of possibilities. The book is well researched and written, with the valuable assistance of Stuart Cowan, a former student of van der Ryn. It is imperative that we gain a better appreciation of our natural environment before adding any more to our built environment. Sustainable design is our only future.

I have been using this deck for many years, it always talks to me and seems to provide depth and clarity in my readings. This is not a Rider type deck, but there are excellent indicators for interpretation in each of the Major cards. It does require some study as you would expect for any unfamiliar deck. The LWB included with this deck is easy to follow, though I believe these cards will work best in the hands of a "sensitive" with an affinity for Egyptian imagery. For me, this is a very intuitive deck, and I recommend it for serious users. Because of the beautifully rendered Egyptian imagery, collectors will enjoy owning this deck as well.

This deck is a little different system with Egyptian art and symbolism. I own a book that explains all the correspondences of this deck with the European method. The book is in Spanish:

El Tarot Egipcio , By: Margarita Arnal MoscarĂ³, Ediciones Obelisco

Try to find this book in English. The book explains the correspondences of the Egyptian hieroglyphs of the deck with the Hebrew alphabet and the Tree of Life. It is very interesting and adds new depth to the interpretations of the images and the suggestive words that are written in each card.

The meaning of the cards is multi-layered> The upper image of the card is associated with an Egyptian Deity, the middle part of the card is associated with the divinatory meaning, and the bottom of the card is associated with Astrology, Hebrew alphabet and the Qabalah.

As I know you it will not be easy to find this book in English I am copying here the correspondences with the European Tarot Suites>

PENTACLES> KIER DECK> from #23 to #36:

23-Ace of Pentacles
24- 2 of Pentacles... and so on and on until the Court cards:
33-Page
34-Knight
35-King
36-Queen

SWORDS> KIER TAROT> from #37 to #50 (court cards are the last 4)

CUPS> KIER DECK> from #51 to #64(court cards are the last 4 cards)

WANDS> KIER DECK> from #65 to 78 (court cards...last 4 cards)

This deck also has another correspondence system that can be applied just summing up the numbers of any card which number is more than 22. Example: If you choose #38 for an answer, you add 3 + 8 = 12 = The Hanged Man, this card adds depth to the #38 card answer. Each minor card has correspondence with a mayor card, just sum the numbers.
Well I wish all of this helps you to use the deck. I know how much illusions, expectations and money we put in a new deck. Spanish is my first language, if you do not understand something, please ask: tarot@auroradivination.com

There are over 145 different kinds of Tarot cards. Which kind to chose? What for? Very simple in design while very psychologically profound, "Egipcios" (Egyptian) Kier Tarot cards are the ones recommended. It is absolutely certain that the Study of Tarot cannot be separated from psychology, in the same way that moisture cannot be separated from water. There are other companies that print "Ancient Egyptian Tarot" cards (as they call their prints), but that do not correspond with esoteric and psychoanalytical principles faithfully displayed in the "Egipcios" Kier Egyptian Tarot cards. "Egipcios" Kier Tarot cards are the ones recommended for study by the contemporary anthropologist and psychologist Samael Aun Weor, and are the most complete of all Tarot cards in existence today. A comment we'd like to share here is that Samael Aun Weor states that Arcanum No. 21 and Arcanum No. 22 are incorrect, and this is due to a mistake in the past that has come along to us today. The graphic images of Arcanum No. 21 and Arcanum No. 22 should be switched, thus having the figure of the "Man over the crocodile" as Arcanum No. 21 (and not No. 22). This can be fixed by photocopying Arcanum No. 21 and Arcanum No. 22, cutting the bottom photocopied part of Arcanum No. 21 and taping it (use transparent scotch tape, if you prefer) over the bottom printed part of Arcanum No. 22; and cutting the bottom photocopied part of Arcanum No. 22 and taping it over the bottom printed part of Arcanum No. 21. The Ancient Egyptian Tarot is not a game, and is not meant for the amusement of others. The Ancient Egyptian Tarot is meant to be accompanied with introspective psychological attention and reflection. The booklet that comes with the cards is good for reference, however it is quite strictly intellectual and does not go to guide the person towards the development of intuition (a necessary element for accurate readings). The quality of the consultation reading depends on the level of Being of the person handling the cards for consultation. (...)

This is an outstanding collection of letters and documents relating to one of the most important and influential person in English history. My only problem how the edition was published - the type font is way too small. I realize that the subject matter is wide ranging and some economies are necessary to keep the printing costs down - reducing the type front to squeeze in more text is one of them. Unfortunately, this makes casual reading very difficult.

This is a beautifully designed book. As to what's inside: It contains what too many of her biographers are either too dishonest, too ignorant, or, too afraid to include, i.e. her belief in God and her understanding that her country and her country's people had a unique place and a unique role in carrying out God's plan. Elizabeth I had a complete understanding. It's difficult to write off her accomplishments in learning at such a young age as being merely the result of having royal tutors helping her along. This is what many biographers try to do. There's never been an over-supply of young genius in royal families in any era. More attention, as well, should be paid to her reading. Reading great books has never been a guarantee of anything regarding somebody's understanding of themselves and the world, but it is, without exception, a key ingredient in the education (self-education or otherwise) of everybody who eventually DOES attain a real understanding of themselves and the world. Elizabeth's understanding may have even gone beyond herself and the world around her... These writings are not ideal as a window into her, but there is enough here to work up an impression above the words, and, coupled with a good biography such as the one by Paul Johnson the picture can become very complete.

Queen Elizabeth I of England has had hundreds of books written *about* her, but very few of them allow us to hear what she has to say in her own words. I found this an accessible, well-edited collection, not of *all* her words, but of a very good sample. It includes all of the speeches, prayers and poems she wrote that are available from reliable contemporary sources (as with all famous people, things have been attributed to her that she never wrote). It also includes -- and this is my favorite part -- a selection of her letters; sometimes the replies are also included, as with a series of angry letters she exchanged with King James of Scotland (all the while addressing him as "my right dear brother and cousin"). The documents range from formal speeches to Parliament to the occasional playful, teasing or personal note, such as the one she wrote to Lord Leicester in the Netherlands that begins, "Rob, I am afraid you will suppose by my wandering writings that a midsummer moon hath taken large possession of my brains..." Spelling and punctuation have been modernized, and unusual words have been footnoted, but the words are otherwise unaltered, and the texts are presented in full, sometimes in several versions where they differ significantly. I did find that a basic knowledge of the outline of the events of her life is immensely helpful in understanding who she is addressing and why, which is often mentioned only briefly in the notes. There is a certain amount of theorizing in the book's Preface about the "strategic gendering of Elizabeth's self-representation" -- but the texts really speak for themselves. This is a rare chance to see historical material that's often hard to locate, and an enjoyable chance to be "inside the head" of a fascinating historical person.

There are countless books on Tudor England and Elizabeth I in particular. So, it is refreshing to finally read some of the letters so many authors have used as source material in their books about the Virgin Queen. There's little doubt that she was well educated and highly intelligent. Now, readers ready and willing to dive into medieval letters, in the formal language of the time, will be rewarded by the ability to form their own opinion about whether this woman was politically savvy, or a political pawn.

You be the judge--no, really:)

In this age of theological chop-logic and political spin, Spinoza's Euclidean method of arguing for God-or-Nature as the self-causing, single, infinite substance conceived under infinite attributes (or aspects) of which we humans have knowledge only of two (thought and matter soars far above the heads of most contemporary academics and bewilders first year philosophy students, who are routinely advised to leave Spinoza well alone and settle down with Descartes instead. What a great deal they miss!

The book is in five parts: 1. Of God; 2. Of the Nature and Origin of the Mind; 3. Of the Origin and Nature of the Affects; 4.Of Human Bondage, or the Power of the Affects; 5. Of the Power of the Intellect, or On Human Freedom.

It is not easy reading, but studying it with an open mind will pay huge dividends.

Spinoza takes us step by logical step, from basic axioms via propositions, demonstrations and explanations, to a world view which inspired Einstein to formulate his theories of relativity, which started the romanticist movement, and which provided the foundations for modern existentialism.

Spinoza was excommunicated by the Catholic Church, booted out by the Quakers and expelled from the synagogue; he was cursed, reviled, and anathematized. Matthew Arnold begins his essay 'Spinoza and the Bible' with the full force of the rabbinic vehemence, "By the sentence of the angels, by the decree of the saints, we anathematize, cut off, curse, and execrate Baruch Spinoza...cursed be he by day, and cursed by night...the Lord pardon him never, the wrath and fury of the Lord burn upon this man.... The Lord blot out his name under heaven.... There shall no man speak to him, no man write to him, no man show him any kindness, no man stay under the same roof with him."

This cheap penguin edition is nicely produced with an attractive cover, though it's a pity the proof reader didn't spot that Spinoza's name is spelt `Spinza' on the copyright page.

Stuart Hampshire's introduction is very helpful, and Edwin Curley's translation is superb.

Basic Flying Instruction: A Comprehensive Introduction to Western Philosophy

The best translation of the "Ethics" in the english language

If you ever heard of Spinoza, you have probably heard also of his "Ethics". This book is simply Spinoza's finest and most valuable book. One could say many things about the "Ethics", but they would be unnecessary: if you want to know about the book, buy a guide or read a compendium on the history of philosophy.

But this is the actual text; here there is no talking about the book, only the actual getting inside it.
The "Ethics" were first published in 1677, in the "Opera Postuma", right after Spinoza's death. The first reaction to it was of disgust; later on, with the german idealists, Spinoza was recuperated from a mistreatment, and was even considered to be the true beginning of all good Philosophy (Hegel). In the end of the 19th century, Elwes published the "Ethics" in the english language for the first time; in the 20th century, 2 new translations appeared, the one by Samuel Shirley, and this one, by Edwin Curley. Edwin Curley, actually, decided to publish, in the 1980s, the collected revised works of Spinoza in english, where in the first volume was included his translation of the "Ethics". This is the translation included in this Penguin volume.

Edwin Curley is a reputated scholar on Spinoza and his translation of the "Ethics" surpasses any other ever written in the english language: it is the most quoted and consulted translation of the "Ethics" by the english-speaking scholars, and it well deserves its success.

If you want to read Spinoza's "Ethics", this is your edition.

Spinoz's Ethics

Spinoza worked through his ideas using his mathematical background. He diligently recorded his postulates in a very studied order. Remember, he wrote this in the 1600's under trying circumstances.

Anyone can pick up the "Ethics" today, randomly open the book and find meaning on just about any topic. For example, I'm opening the book now, Page 132, the first thing I read in Italics is:

"Only insofar as men live according to the guidance of reason, must they always agree in nature."

At the top of that same page it says, "Peter has the idea of a thing he loves which is already possessed, whereas Paul has the idea of a thing he loves which is lost. That is why one is affected with joy and the other with sadness, and to that extent they are contrary to one another."

Spinoza teaches us to be moral without religion, but with a total belief in God. His view is that there is nothing that cannot be known. Try it, for this book will end up being well worn by you.

Ethics is a towering work by an absolute genius, a mathematical definitive explanation of G~d, the universe and man's place in it. Read it not because you think you must fight through `great philosophy', but for its beautiful symmetry of ground breaking rational thought. I eagerly recommend this work to anyone interested in exploring their thoughts on philosophy, religion and psychology. If anything, Ethics obtains renewed relevance in the post-modern 21st century and its unfolding events.

Imagine setting out as an objective to describe human existence and the "journey to inner freedom." To accomplishment that feat, we must first begin with G~d and the universe, then work our way through nature, religion, society, science, and evolution until we can frame the essence of man. Imagine then that we wish to make sense of the human paradox of violence, hate, love and passion, fear and hope, and give it a framework through which to view the world and gain serenity and purpose.

Imagine further that we do not wish to merely write yet another philosophical or Eastern spiritual text. We wish to supersede and encompass all these earlier attempts, including current thinking on Judeo Christian practice. While doing so, we shall set our bar high. We will extrapolate these beliefs and universal relationships as a geometric treatise in the manner of a mathematical proof, with definitions, axioms and propositions, and so demonstrate the possibility of reducing philosophy and the pursuit of human fulfillment to a scientific exercise.

Now imagine that we shall set out on our metaphysical journey during the Inquisition, when espousals contrary to the Church result in execution. Imagine that our thoughts are so revolutionary that even the heretics (mainly Protestants) and evolving philosophers with whom we must find safe harbor view our thoughts with alarm. Imagine ourselves cut off from public discourse, excommunicated from family and friends. Lastly, imagine we are frail and suffer from ill health, our views necessarily rendering us relatively penniless and unknown, hiding in modest obscurity. Now dear reader, we are ready to begin our book on the meaning of life despite the fact that we will never publish it for fear of death.

Most great thinkers name `Ethics' among their largest influences. Einstein espoused himself a Spinozan. It is certainly one of the most astounding and important books ever written.

His work changed my life. He not only filled in pieces of the puzzle I had missing, he rearranged them and gave them sense. I view almost all important constructs in life within his tautology. Please read Spinoza.

One last note: Readers may find one of the translations of his work more approachable. I plead with the reader not to allow the geometric treatise of his work to get in the way of accessing this most incredible accomplishment.

His astounding work is a testament to the blinding power of rational thought.

I just finished reading "The Exemplary Husband". I cannot thank Dr. Stuart Scott enough for this book. It is so thorough. I will read it again and again. The book has so much in it that it should be read slowly to really absorb and capture the Biblical perspective for the husband. Dr. Scott's extensive use of Bible exerpts is the core of why this book works! Finally, I am beginning to understand the the true role of the husband. My wife and I are Catholic and I used to have pretty much an "I'm the boss" attitude or "you should listen to me because I am the husband". I must admit that at first, parts of the book were a little hard to swallow - especially with respect to intimacy and lust. But after careful prayer and reflection I have come to understand how selfishness can really destroy a relationship and even one's feelings of self worth. "The Exemplary Husband" has been so helpful for improving my relationship with Christ, God, and my wife. This book should be mandatory reading for all husbands. This contemporary book is one of the most valuable tools any man could have to help insure marital harmony. Thank you Dr. Scott!

Good Book for those men struggling to lead their family

As a skeptical Christian man of anything "How to..." I have found this book to be helpful in establishing a good foundation for men to lead their family. I can see this book as a great book for someone that is completely broken by doing family their own way and truly seeking to get some help from God. Men often wonder why our families don't follow - perhaps we are not leading in the right way.

I can honestly say that this is one of the best books I have ever read in regard to godly living. The unique aspect of this volume is its practical `how to' approach to daily life. I especially appreciated the exercises in the appendix section. These exercises [and others scattered throughout the book] provide the sincere disciple with actual acts of righteousness that can be practiced. The various charts also provide an organized plan to keep track of progress. Help is to be found in every area of imaginable difficulty from financial management to selfless sexual intimacy with your spouse. The theological explanation of the role of the husband is done at the outset of the book with great care and simplicity. The reader is challenged as to his view of God and his willingness to live his life in submission to the Word of God. That priority of worship is consistently brought under pressure as the husband faces opportunities to lay down his life daily on behalf of his wife. According to Dr. Scott, `The Exemplary Husband' "has no trouble in asking forgiveness because they want to be peacemakers" [p.190]. This book not only teaches the husband how to recognize sin and shortcoming in his life, it also teaches him how to deal with it biblically. As a pastor engaged in regular counseling, I have found that most Christian men have real difficulty as they attempt to discipline their time within the priority system that God has set forth in His Word. This book can play a vital part in bringing some accountability into that area. True believers want to live a repentant and godly life, however, in many cases they don't know how to begin and maintain the process. In the `Exemplary Husband', the seeking heart will find concrete answers from the Bible explained in a very useful way. I was personally convicted and encouraged to grow in my relationship with God and with my wife as I read this volume.

I have 10 hard back volumes of the Australian series, all written under William Stuart Long, all very well written and well worth the long wait to obtain your full series collection. I believe there are two more one being the Nationals which I would love to be able to locate. All are based on factual historical events making the fictional characters appear as real people in history.Apart from the history the story is very entertaining, making it hard to put the book down.

This book takes you back to the late 1700's to England where criminals, justly and unjustly accused, were transported under ghastly conditions to Australia to begin a new colony. When reading this book, you really feel as if you were there right along with the exiled prisoners. Although the book is fiction, it is based on events that actually happened, and I feel I now understand a bit more about this period in Australia's history. I enjoyed it and look forward to reading the rest of the series.

The Australian series is a compelling historical record.

This series should be used as a teaching guide. It gives a remarkable insight into the reality of a new colony built on hatred and fear. What our ancestors endured was without doubt incredible. The corruption and politics unequalled. The insensitivity of the British Admiralty and the cruelty of the English Government against the Irish and their own people was horrific. Vivian Stuart's research and insight into the personalities of our founding fathers & early colonists is brilliant. This historical record has been written with passion and understanding. I advise every Australian and those interested in history to read this account. It is also a tribute to William Bligh, who should be vindicated in history as he was not only a great mariner but a fine leader. Read it.
