Treating Affect Phobia is a manual for short-term work with relatively high-functioning individuals whose emotional blocks influence their work, relationships, or their quality of life. Novices and senior clinicians alike will find this manual useful. It focuses psychodynamic work by combining the exposure work of CBT, and it elaborates CBT by including exposure to avoided emotions. The writing is clear and direct. There is enough specificity for a novice, and the exercises at the end of the chapters help the reader to absorb and practice the material. Those clinicians with a CBT background will find the book refreshingly present-focused. The explanation of defenses and the careful working with defenses and anxiety-regulation are clear and understandable even without a psychodynamic background. For those unfamiliar with exposure therapy, the book offers a radical way of enhancing comfort with avoided affect.

For the senior clinician, the book offers a unique and efficient approach to short-term dynamic Psychotherapy, but there is enough subtlety for repeated readings.

The book targets high-functioning individuals (those with a GAF score 50 or above), but has chapters on working with those with less stable object relations. I have found that the model can be adapted for those with a lower GAF.

A very useful manual

The authors have produced a very clear presentation of how to identify and treat psychodynamic conflicts using active methods. For the beginning therapist, it offers a step by step detailed approach. For the more advanced therapist, it has a very clear and useful organization that provides a resource for thinking about the stuck places in therapy. Both supervisors and supervisees will find it helpful.

A Manual of Great Character

Affect Phobia is a brilliant clinical model, the Triangle of Conflict is a teaching tool of beauty, and this manual is a pleasure to read. The theory is creatively integrative and above all functional. I find my thinking clarified, I know how to stay on track when a client's avoidant behavior takes center stage, and at all times I have guidance in attending to emotion. My recommendation is: buy it, read it, share it with the people you supervise! Your work will be enriched.

This is without a doubt the clearest book I have ever read about how to understand and formulate psychodynamic conflict, and how to address it in psychotherapy. Integrating elements of psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and interpersonal models, the manual is at once respectful of clients and a very good "how-to" for therapists at any level. It is deceptively simple, in that appears to be for those new to the field, but in fact it is astute and complex.

Outstanding Conceptual Clarity

Review Date: 2006-06-05
This is the only "manual" I recommend to supervisees or seasoned colleagues. It is a wonderful "how-to" for psychotherapists, and so much more. Integrating elements from both psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral traditions, it offers a simple yet powerful conceptual framework for understanding inner psychological conflict. The model clearly illuminates how maladaptive behavior in a client (or anyone)represents their best effort at avoiding feared emotional states. In creating so much conceptual clarity, it allows the therapist to more readily arrive at a place of compassion and effective intervention. Numerous and creative strategies are suggested for working with inner conflict, often in the context of clinical vignettes illustrating exemplary and inspiring work of mature and compassionate therapists. It never trivializes the depth of human suffering. This is a wonderful book!

I'm currently a 2L and last year, I used a plethora of study aids. I found this book to be the most helpful for Torts class. The book explains the history behind the subjects and then what the substantive law is. It lays everything out very logically and is organized in a way that makes sense as well. While it doesn't have any comprehensive case summaries, if you truly want to understand the law of torts, you can't go wrong with this book.

Great Supplement to Understand Torts

This book was recommended by my torts professor as a supplement to readings. I found it extremely helpful and a great overview of the torts material. My professor was nice enough to tell us which pages would be beneficial to read which was helpful but the glossary of terms is great for going back to a topic for a quick refresher of the subject. The book is well written but simple enough for a first year to easily grasp the topics covered. Some other pros? It mentions specific important tort cases most likely covered in ALL first year torts classes (Palsgraf among many). I think this book would be a great review for the final as well as using it as a supplement to assigned class readings.
I have the older version and it seems some of the law is not current, I do know the book has been republished in 2006 and therefore might include those revisions. Definitely a must for first year law students.

I am a torts law professor and this is one of the two books I recommend my students use as supplementary reading. It is a relatively short but comprehensive and very well written summary of the material. Torts is a required course in all law schools and this book will help any student get a more complete understanding of the topic. Students, will, of course, need to read and prepare the assignments from whatever text the professor assigns. This book will work best as a supplement to those texts. By the way, the other book I recommend to my students is The Forms and Functions of Tort Law by Abraham.

This book is a must have for any torts class. Forget Gilberts. This book is easy to read, straight forward, and gives examples on every topic it discusses. This book is the secondary text book in my torts class and was highly reccommended by my professor. If you are confused about anything, this book will make any complex theory easy to understand.

This is a really great book - it also is small ( less weight to carry in bookbag ) - it has some short commings ( light on product liability ) - I used this with Epstein on Torts ( Aspen Hornbook ) Shapo on Torts ( West Hornbook ). You will find that all authors give some topics less attention than others - hence the plethora of hornbooks. Emmanuals & Gilberts are not so good.. Also - get the California Baby Bar Essay problems and answers - this is the best resource for practice exam taking. If you're lazy - get the Black Letter Law series book on torts for very concise rules - I used this as a rule book to capsulate the restatements so I could remember them for the test

Buber is one of the great original thinkers of modern Judaism. He reads here six Hasidic tales and infuses them with his own fundamental perceptions as to the nature of the religious life. He writes with grace and power. And there is in his interpretations and retellings a sense of the holy and the inspired.

From the Existential to the Spiritual

Martin Buber has a way of speaking to my heart. He speaks as a human who has always struggled with the cynicism and skeptical spirituality of our age. Yet he has retained a strong faith in God, and a strong faith in God's real presence in our struggling human everyday life. We may not always feel His presence...but in Buber's words we hear another's testimony that God is with us even when He seems absent. In these short parables, Buber introduces us to other humans...ordinary men...who likewise have struggled to walk with God. Their walk is grounded in the existential. But unlike other ways such as Zen, their walk gradually reveals the real presence of God who has been walking with us since day one. It is as if in our faithful walk God gradually becomes trulu felt as walking beside us...and in our hearts.

41 pages of wisdom from the standpoint of Hasidism (from "hasidut": allegiance, piety)--but Hasidism seen through the heart of Martin Buber.

This too-brief book really asks only one question: why are we here?

Buber responds with thoughts, anecdotes, and reflections, all of it extraordinarily condensed and yet marvelously lucid.

Here are two quotations:

"Our treasure is hidden beneath the hearth of our own home."

"Man was created for the purpose of unifying the two worlds. He contributes towards this unity by holy living, in relationship to the world in which he has been set, at the place on which he stands."

This book is comprised of several short essays that are each about ten pages or so in length. It is difficult to explain exactly what the book talks about. But it basically is a series of discussions about what our lives mean in relation to G-d. Why we are here on this planet, how you can think of your life and the lives of others, and lessons from other great Jewish thinkers about these same topics. I read this book, which is tiny and small, maybe 80 or so pages, and it changed my life. It opened for me a new way to explore my Jewish identity that was discrete from the mechanics of the religious observances. I am now very interested in Jewish philosophy and epistemology and want to read further. I would highly, highly recommend this book to anyone, Jewish or not.

...Martin Buber encompasses the whole world in the span of 50 pages. He relates new interpretations of a handful of old myths and stories, making each one reflect the individual's personal journey towards enlightenment. Poignant and marvellously efficient and concise in his style and vocabulary, Buber has created a book which is accessible to small children, but which will resonate with anyone even slightly interested in spirituality. It can be read in an hour, and is a book to which I return again and again for guidance and inspiration. Truly, a miracle of a book.

I've been looking for a poetry book, for a very long time, that I could just sit back, relax and really get into. I searched through aisles and aisles of boring, unemotional poetry with themes I just didn't relate with by various writers. I finally found what is in my opinion, the perfect poetry book! Every poem in this book is outstanding. It is the most enjoyable book I've ever read. And most definitely the type of book that one would read over and over again. I was also pleasantly surprised to find out that it's written by the author of one of my favorite children's books! Highly recommended!

In my opinion, the way Giselle Steele writes --with a gentle, tender touch that leaves a lasting impression--is reminiscent of Robert Frost; the same deep appreciation of nature, the same vivid imagery, the same deep emotion, fill every verse. The poems in this book truly come from the heart, and make the absolutely remarkable photographs--also by Giselle Steele --suddenly come to life. I recommend this book highly!

This fascinating book of poems will remain a part of my life forever. The poetry is very moving and diverse. The book begins with a journey to the ocean under the heading "Captive Soul of The Sea" then takes you to a realm of fantasy in the section entitled "Ivory Tower Of Dreams." There are three more sections filled with awesomely written poetry, each as enjoyable and exquisite as the next. I recommend it highly for all poetry lovers, and for anyone who wants to be taken on a fantastic journey through reading.

I especially liked the author's comments at the back of the book. She explained her inspiration behind each poem and that was really neat. Does anybody know if she is currently on a book signing tour? I would love to get this autographed. Truly a wonderful book of poetry!

The Wellness Book has been extremely helpful to me and is one of the best investments I have made in myself. I first used this book 10 years ago and was able to establish some healthful living goals and actions for myself that improved my physical conditioning immensely. I continue to use it today. What I really like about this book is that it enables each reader to really focus in on their individual lifestyles, needs, and habits and develop specific, realistic, and individualized action plans for improved and healthful living. The improved physical condition that I realized as a result of focusing on a plan and actions enabled me to climb mountains in the Sierra Nevada. I have also used techniques in this book to successfully address anxiety. This week I pulled the book off of my shelf and am going at it again. I am having fun with this exercise because I can compare my "10 loves" from 10 years ago to my "10 loves" of today and put a plan in place to realize them. Many thanks to the authors for such insightful and all emcompassing work. This book is as useful and current today as it was the day it was written.

Stuart does a great job of capturing everyday moments we all encounter and turning them inside out to see the true meaning of life in ways you wouldn't expect. He shows us, through short, fun to read stories, that there is humor and grace all around....all we need to do is look for it in places you might not expect to find it, like your own backyard.

I passed this book up the first time I glanced at it, but then I read a review online, and am very glad I decided to purchase it. It covers hundreds of mini-subjects on gun collecting, and is especially helpful with photographic tips for the gun collector. The book features excellent photography throughout, and each page seems to have a helpful picture and caption that improves a broad range of collector knowledge. Some of the information will be very basic to an established collector, but it has something for each level of firearm collector, so it is relevant to anyone in the hobby. It is full of excellent advice and personal experiences that will probably pay a collector back for the cost of the book and more in avoided mistakes.

The book 331 Essential Tips and Tricks for the Gun Collector by Stuart C Mowbray was absolutely brilliant in its presentation and format.
I found some most valuable information about how to look after, what to look for and how to care for the items that had been purchased.
The only drawback I saw was that it tended to focus around the flint lock/black powder firearms and not much to do with more modern centre fire types eg M1 Carbine, M1 Garand, Thompson SMG etc which where my interests lie. However the book is a must for the collector and hopefully Mr Mowbray will do a book on modern firearms in the future. If he does I will be the first to buy it

OK, first off this isn't the definitive word on any single aspect of gun collecting. However, it is chuck full of all kinds of tidbits of information ranging from buying, maintaining, storing, displaying, etc. your gun collection. If you're a novice, it is a great starting point. If you've been around for a while, you'll still find more than enough useful information to cover the issue price. Your lessons are expensive in gun collecting, and this book is a cheap investment to avoid costly mistakes. The pages are nice and glossy, the soft cover being quite thick. The photography is fantastic, sharp and clear. It's like holding a piece in your hand. All the photographs are in color, and they abound! I would definitely add this to my gun library if I were starting out, or even if I just had one or two family guns that I wanted to take care of properly.

A 'must' for any gun collector needing a comprehensive reference.

This book is one of the few "must read" books on the Hermetic-Alchemical tradition by a modern author. Burkhardt is uniquely qualified to author such a book due both to his life long study of a variety of Traditional religions (with special focus on Sufism and Islamic Esoterism) and his encyclopedic knowledge of the Alchemical Tradition. His amazing grasp of the subject really shines through in the book and it quickly becomes apparent that he has a knack for reducing (often) complex and hard to grasp concepts into clear and concise text.

As another reviewer noted the Alchemical tradition can be found in a variety of guises throughout the worlds religions and peoples.. From China to India to Europe... So learning a little about it cant hurt and might just help you understand some the deepest mysteries of religion. Knowledge of Alchemy is a must for those who wish to study comparative religion as well.

_Alchemy: Science of the Cosmos, Science of the Soul_ by traditionalist author Titus Burckhardt is a unique book which examines the science of alchemy in the light of its traditional interpretation. Burckhardt quotes extensively from such figures in the traditional school of thought as Rene Guenon, Mircea Eliade, and Julius Evola (who all had written on alchemy), as well as Carl Jung, the depth psychologist who attempted to understand alchemy in terms of the collective unconscious (relating it to the process of individuation). Burckhardt begins by noting that contrary to the modern historical and scientistic interpretation, alchemy was not so much a forerunner of modern day chemistry and science as it was a process of spiritual growth embodied in tradition. Burckhardt notes how alchemy had its origins in the Egyptian deity of Thoth-Hermes and in the writings of Hermes Trismegistos which came out of Egypt. Later, alchemy was to come to play an important part in all the world's great religious traditions, including Hindu, Buddhist, Chinese, and primitive Japanese religions as well as the three monotheistic religious traditions Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Much of this book is spent discussing various source materials from these three monotheistic religious traditions as they relate to alchemical transformation. Burckhardt notes that alchemy did not derive from a desire to enrich oneself by transmuting base metals into gold as had originally been conjectured. Rather, the gold came to represent a spiritual state attained by the alchemist. Much of this book is spent discussing the seven base metals as they relate to the seven planets and the four elements (air, earth, fire, water) as well as the ether. In addition, the concept of the "chemical marriage" of sulphur and quicksilver, sun and moon, king and queen to achieve gold is explained. Various symbols including the ouroborus, the caduceus (or staff of Hermes), the Christian cross, and the seal of Solomon are explained in terms of the alchemical meaning. In addition, alchemy is related to the system of yoga and the kundalini, as well as other far eastern traditions. The athanor or the oven in which the alchemical elixer is prepared is also explained in terms of its symbolism. Burckhardt also includes a section discussing the life of Nicolas Flamel, a fourteenth century alchemist who came into contact with a special alchemical treatise. In addition, the Emerald Tablets are discussed, which reveal the principle "whatever is below is like that which is above" showing the direct relation between macrocosm and microcosm (Man). This represents an excellent source on alchemy as revealed through the lens of the traditionalist school of thought and the perennial philosophy.

Interest in alchemy has been greatly enhanced during this century through studies and research carried out in this field by historians of science and also by psychologists. The historians of science have thought in their studies to discern in alchemy a primitive chemistry and the roots of the modern science whose name derives from alchemy. The psychologists, beginning with C. G. Jung, who devoted two works to the subject, regard alchemy as a psychology couched in the language of metallurgy. Rarely has a study been made of alchemy as a science of the soul in the light of a spiritual principle that manifests itself at once in the soul and in the cosmos and therefore relates soul and cosmos, or the microcosm and the macrocosm, intimately to one another. In fact one can say that the book under review is the first work in which integral alchemy, as a spiritual science of the soul but related both in language and inner correspondence to the cosmos, has been elucidated both with precision and in depth. As the author says, "spiritual alchemy was not necessarily involved in outward metallurgical operations, even when it made use of them as similes. It is nevertheless to be supposed that originally the inward and outward work went hand in hand, for, within the framework of an organic civilization orientated towards man's highest goal, a craft can only have meaning when it serves a spiritual way" (p. 92). In this as well as many other passages the author has expounded not only the principles of alchemy but also of all traditional cosmology, and even of art which is closely connected with it.

To penetrate into the meaning of alchemy would require under normal conditions, when this tradition was fully alive, an initiation into the "mysteries" through which the meaning of its symbols and method and its often extremely abstruse and complex language would become revealed. In the absence of an actual possibility of following such a way, the only alternative is to begin from where alchemy ends and thence come "downward," if one may so express oneself. That is, alchemy seeks to lead man by stages from the materia prima to the state of purity which makes possible the wedding of soul and Spirit, the moon and the Sun. Now, if one possesses knowledge of the spiritual life through other means, through the "Greater Mysteries" rather than through the "Lesser Mysteries" of alchemy, and if one also possesses an intuition of the spiritual significance of traditional art, then it is possible to descend from the spiritual to the material and to unravel many of the mysteries of alchemy without being taught its language stage by stage. It is noteworthy that the author of this work has written several outstanding books on Islamic esotericism or Sufism as well as on the traditional art of East and West. He has applied knowledge of both the above subjects as well as his intimate knowledge of the metaphysical and cosmological doctrines of other traditions (especially of Hinduism, where Tantrism presents many striking resemblances to alchemy) to the clarification and elucidation of basic alchemical symbols and doctrines. In this manner he has made clear certain questions which no other contemporary book had been able to explain satisfactorily.

The chapters of the book, starting with a short historical introduction, deal with nearly every aspect of alchemy, from an explanation of its language to the discussion of planets and metals, the elements, the materia prima, sulfur, quicksilver and salt and the alchemical marriage. There is also a very important chapter devoted to the "alchemy of prayer," while several chapters are devoted to specific alchemical authors or works such as Nicolas Flamel and the "Emerald Tablet."

One of the most important chapters of the book is on the "stages of the work" and its correspondence to the stages of the spiritual life as taught in different traditions, proving without doubt the inner nexus between alchemy and the spiritual way. The discussion here of the technique of invocation, so central to spiritual realization in many traditions, and its connection with the actual "spiritual technique" of alchemy is very revealing.

In addition to the text, the book abounds in illustrations from different alchemical manuscripts, some made available for the first time in this work. The meaning of these illustrations is given wherever they appear, adding a very helpful "visual" commentary to the text.

The appearance of this book in English should correct once and for all many errors prevalent in this field. It should make clear to historians of science, of whom at least some would agree with this point of view, that although alchemy did give birth indirectly to chemistry, yet if we are to study it scientifically we must take full account of its unified world view according to which the events in the soul of man and in nature are inextricably connected; this inner correspondence between man and nature is something that has been forgotten by modern man including the chemists. It should also show up the serious limitations and errors of any purely psychological interpretation of alchemy such as would seek to study the psyche without reference to the luminous world of the Spirit which alone can comprehend the soul, in the sense of both encompassing and understanding. For students of art and comparative religion in general this work is also of great significance.

From the point of view of translation this book has been well done; its presentation is also excellent, with very few errors. A short list of the names and dates of alchemists and a bibliography of works on the subject add to its usefulness. One could wish, however, that some of the sentences which appear only in Latin had been followed by their English translation thus making this easier to read for all and sundry.

If you've ever heard the phrases 'aqua vitae', 'the chemical wedding', 'the philosopher's stone' and wondered from whence these concepts came, Titus Burckhardt sums them up nicely in this cogent little publication that is more a tractate than a book, more a treatise than an introduction. Mr. Burckhardt treats the subject of alchemy with both the practicality of the operative form of the art, and the spirituality of the speculative form it takes. The text unfolds laconically, introducing the main topics of the royal art in neat little chapters that stick to the subject at hand and finally realizes the prize in the explanation of the 'great work' (another phrase you may have heard of). A wonderful addition to any student's library, esoteric or no.

I used this book in my introductory level computer science course. I found this book to be an essential tool in my early undersanding of how computer works in general and more importantly how to develop working algorithms. This book is well designed and easy to read and easy to understand. This book comes with a CD ROM. I believe this is the key feature to this book. On the CD ROM there are emulators of various computer operations. (eg. Compiler tree breakdown, and many other emulators. An Excellent book!

Deckers gives you a concise tour of computer science. Not enough to turn you into a programmer, given the space limitations of the book. But he covers many key ideas in the field. Including Usenet, email, virtual communities [think Second Life], and the World Wide Web. Naturally, he has to explain HTML, as the graphical language of the Web. HTML is so simple that he essentially explains all its important points. Including the crucial hyperlink tag.

The book then segues naturally from HTML to XML. Where you can now write your own tags. Immensely flexible and popular.

It is only after this, that the book goes into the traditional topics of computer science. The explanations of what makes a programming language. He uses JavaScript as one example of such a language. So you learn about constructs like for loops, if-else and while statements.

The book is really dominated by the Web. The pedagogy stresses this.

Very Good, Very Well-Written Book

This book is one of the two texts in FSU's COP 3502: "Introduction to Computer Science" course (a required course in their Computer Science degree). As the authors state in the preface, they "wanted to design a 'CS 0' course that was a true survey course." They did an excellent job. Basically, they start with the assumption that the reader has never turned on a computer in his life and take him through its history, how to use it, what programming is about, and how the hardware works. They even teach a bit of HTML and JavaScript. There's very little I can say that is bad about the book. It comes down to some typgraphical errors, an incorrect web address for the online portion of the book (easily figured out from the page their web address takes you to), and my belief that they took out too many steps in describing computer switches, gates, and circuits. Frankly, I'm amazed that they reasonably went from a neophyte level to a fully-grounded level in one book. I rate it as 5 stars out of 5.

After meeting Dr. Gould in person, and talking with him for over an hour, he casually mentioned that he had just finished writing a book.

... after reading and re-reading this book, I have a picture of a man who went through one of the most intense training programs ever put together. And then, for some reason, decided to go through that same training again at age 60!

To anyone who enjoys military history, especially the accounts around the bulding and creation of the US Special Forces, this is an ideal book. For those who read accounts of people who have been through the extremes of human endurance & existence, this book also a great match.

An outstanding chronicle of Ranger School and what these men must accomplish in order to wear the Ranger Tab and protect us all. What a wonderful use of vocabulary, syntax and grammar with such real life imagery. Every American should read this book and be thankful. Every Ranger should read it and be proud.
