The Companion is a comprehensive collection of essays on this complex topic. The first part addresses different aspects of Postmodernist thought, creating a complete picture. I found especially useful the last part, a glossary of terms and key figures of the postmodern movement. A fully enjoyable amd instructive read!

Having purchased the massive Routledge Companion to Aesthetics, I was expecting another book of that stature. To my pleasant surprise, this book is a wonderfully smaller introduction to the concept of Postmodernism. The structure of this book, with its history and cultural context forming the first part followed by the relevant people/terms/meanings in the second part is brilliant. I no longer have to sit in class with that glazed look that every student seems to get when trying to absorb 'stuff' that seems to whizz over everyone's head. This book has become my new best friend when I am uni. (the companion to Aesthetics is too heavy to carry-that stays by my bedside!)

This book is of great value to readers struggling to familiarize themselves with the postmodern. The first half of the book provides interesting explorations of how the postmodern is at work in culture. The latter half is of particular value to anyone unfamiliar with the multitude of artists and theorists whose work and thought is significant to the postmodern. The collection of entries in the dictionary serve anyone reading primary postmodern texts well by opening up otherwise opaque allusions.

When I first ordered Stuart Sim's `Routledge Companion to Postmodernism', I was expecting a narrative discourse on postmodernism, most from a philosophical standpoint. What I received was quite different, but quite wonderful, and an indispensable resource as I study theology and philosophy as they relate to postmodern ideas.

The text, edited by Sim, who is a professor of English Studies at the University of Sunderland, has dozens of contributors drawn from the academy and professional ranks. They provide an insight in the broad and varied diversity of postmodernism, which is far from being a monolithic enterprise. There are two main sections to the book - first, a series of 14 essays on sources and developments in modernism, and the second, a critical dictionary of names and terms.

The first section of essays includes essays such as Postmodernism and Philosophy, Postmodernism and Politics, etc. The topics deal with feminism, science and technology, art and architecture, many aspects of popular and current culture (cinema, television, literature, music, lifestyles), as well as the general idea of postmodernity vis-à-vis modernity and traditions of criticism and dissension. Each of the essays is interesting and engaging, brief enough to be read in one sitting, yet thorough enough to be the sort the interested reader will return to again. Postmodernism can be defined in various ways, but Sim gives the definition out of Lyotard as the rejection of `grand narratives' and universal theories -- the sort that science, metaphysics, mathematics, and other such disciplines have tried since the Enlightenment (or even further back) to support and impose. There is a strong antifoundational sense to postmodernism, that often makes it controversial.

One of the really useful aspects of the essays is that the text includes words (names, terms) in boldface when they are included in the general dictionary in the second section. There are brief biographical sketches of key intellectual players in postmodernism (Derrida, Lyotard, Barthes, Baudrillard, Foucault, etc.) as well as creative and artistic types (Pound, Carter, Rushdie, Vonnegut, etc.) contained, as well as figures who, while not postmodern themselves (Kant, etc.) nonetheless provide necessary and significant pieces to the postmodern project.

Rare is the book that will contain references to both Derrida and Heidegger's destruction/deconstruction as well as MTV and the rock band U2. This is truly postmodern! The cross-referencing makes this book a real pleasure to use; both the index and the bibliography make this of real value to scholars as well. The text is difficult at times (given the subject matter, there is no escaping that) but not needlessly so; the careful reader will find value regardless of the lack of previous critical and philosophical training.

I began my interest in postmodernism as a piece of theological investigations arising out of narrative theology. This book goes much further afield than that narrow disciplinary focus, but I am grateful for that, for it opens up a broad vista on the subject, and asks questions that need to be addressed in intellectual pursuits and cultural/creative tasks across the board.

The best introduction to postmodern theory

This is the single most essential volume for anyone who wants to familiarize his or herself with the huge field of postmodern theory. Most people realize that postmodern theory is incredibly controversial with opinions ranging from the positive to the negative to some theorists who claim postmodernism doesn't even exist. Some of my professors have gone as far as to claim that the term "postmodern" itself is meaningless, that it cannot be defined. Anyone who reads this book will understand exactly why that is a ridiculous statement: there are plenty of answers available and even if there is a multiplicity of interpretations and understandings, there *are* definite, defensible positions and you'll discover them here.

I must stress that this is excellent as an introduction: of course no one would use this as their only source on postmodern philosophy. The point is, this book introduces you to the influential theorists, their ideas, and their work. Following that, you can go and explore them on your own. The best thing about this book is that it gives you a manageable overview without reducing a rich field of discourse to a few key ideas and people. There are shorter guides to postmodernism, but they're typically the work of a single author from a single perspective. Stuart Sim does a great job compiling articles and dictionary entries here.

The articles are largely descriptive so you don't need to worry about hidden agendas and biased information. The writing style is conducive to understanding and communication. Concepts learned here will help you tackle the more difficult primary sources later when you're ready for more specific readings.

It's also a great reference. Even after studying postmodern philosophy for a few years, I still return to this book to remind myself of certain facts. I've recommended it to a number of friends who found it very useful as well. This is great for students and for those with a casual interest in continental philosophy, postmodern theory, or our contemporary world. I highly recommend this.

Searching for Values: A Grandmother, a Grandson, and the Discovery of Goodness is a memoir, a visualization, and an urgent missive to counter greed and dishonesty run rampant in modern culture. Author Stuart Muszynski, bedridden for over a year with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, visualized his grandmother's life and home town in Poland, and the ethical values that inspired five Christian families to hide her and his parents during the Holocaust. Exploring history and the cruel choices that once had to be made to survive during and after the Nazi occupation of Poland, Searching for Values recounts chilling tales of the Third Reich's methodical genocide while marveling at the compassion of those who risked their lives to defy it. A profoundly moving blend of the lessons of present and past in the quest for building a fulfilling life and community, and passing on positive values to one's children.

I had the opportunity to read this book when it was still in the stages of being written and perfected, and I had the honor of contributing to its editing. I think that teenagers and adults alike will enjoy this book, for it teaches the importance of origins as building-blocks of a human being. I certainly learned a lot from reading it! It is also well-written, interesting, and engaging. A must-read for entire families!

The summary of this book doesn't adequately convey how gripping this story is as Muszynski recounts the life and death moment-to-moment choices his grandmother and parents made to survive in Nazi-occupied Poland, intercutting that story with the challenges he himself faced growing up as the child of Holocaust survivors in a suburb of Cleveland.

It was incredibly refreshing to read a story that so fully reveals the humanity of all the people described, including the Polish Christian families that helped protect the Muszynskis from the Nazis at great risk to their own lives. Also - we always hear about 'cycles of violence' handed down through generations, a story that the nightly news never lets us forget. Here is an inspiring story about a 'cycle of kindness' handed down through generations, that has led to the spread of kindness to tens of thousands of American teens today.

A great story to give to grandparents and to teens.

I was moved by Stuart Muszynski's work, both for its bold message of hope and its unanswered questions. His book convincingly discusses how a terrible trauma affected his family in the past and still affects him today. Utilzing a juxtapositioning of chapters to continuously effect sensibilities, Mr. M shows how the horrors of WWII Poland for Jews are very much a part of first generation Americans' psyches. His emotional angst leads the reader to understand how deeply he was affected by his parent's tragedy, and the concrete steps he took and continues to take to build himself, and more nobly, his community. As a child of Holocaust survivors myself, I understand the pain Mr. M has confronted, yet ultimately it is his very personal journey that leaves uneasy feelings about how few of us in difficult circumstances are motivated to do good by our fellow man. From the deepest darkness, he has summoned a lightening bolt of consciousness. Amen.

Dr. Shipko's book not only provides a great overview of panic disorder, but also addresses topics that are often neglected on the subject. Psychological, psychiatric and medical aspects of this frequently misunderstood condition are clearly addressed. Even as an educated patient, I found myself learning new things beyond the DSM-IV manual. Topics include necessary medical tests, GERD and IBS issues, medication and psychotherapy issues, as well as heredity, pregnancy, birth, children, relationship and marriage issues. I believe that anyone with panic disorder could greatly benefit from this insightful book.

Several years ago I was fortunate to discover the website of the wonderful doctor/author of this book. I've lived with this incredibly misunderstood disorder all my life and never knew what I had. Why? Because the vast majority of doctors don't understand the full spectrum of panic disorder and attribute so much of the physical problems that go along with it as separate entities. Dr. Shipko is the first doctor that I know of who has put it all together for those of us who have panic disorder. He has defined it and made sense of it. His book will literally change your life if you have panic disorder. The information is so comprehensive and so clearly explained. Knowledge IS power and you will be given the tools to take charge of this disorder and make your way safely through the maze of today's medications and the doctors who try to treat panic disorder. While some physicians listen to their patients and respect their opinions, many doctors have sketchy information about panic disorder and how best to treat it. I can honestly say that the author of this book probably saved my sanity and, I am certain, spared me from the hell of much of today's medications. I have exhausted library books on panic disorder and skimmed books in bookstores and nowhere have I found a single source as concise, clear, helpful, and valuable as this book.

An easy to read, no nonsense book about Panic Disorder. Written in clear laymans' terms, double spaced text and short chapters, this book moves along quickly and is filled with information that is easily absorbed. With good advice and a keen understanding of Panic Disorder, the author writes about treating real people and shares their experiences. The treatment advice and coping mechanisms are right on. One of the best I've read on the subject.

John MacArthur calls us to examine how we, as believers of the Lord Jesus Christ, percieve and live in this world. He gives practical ways to align our thinking and hearts with the truth of the Word rather than with the world. I highly recommend this book to any believer whether a formal leader in the church or not.

Think Biblically is edited by John MacArthur, who also has contributed four chapters to the book. The other contributors are faculty members of the Masters College. Every person has a weltanschauung we are told in the introduction. A weltanschauung is a personal worldview. This book contrasts the christian worldview from a secular mindset. How should a christian think about and relate to the world in which we live? Think Biblically is very helpful in giving answers to that question on a number of subjects. How should a christian view creation versus evolution, history, education, church and state, science?
An important feature of this book are the insights given to what the implications of not holding a christian worldview can be. On p.79 John MacArthur writes "There is no viable explanation of the universe without God. So many immense and intricate wonders could not exist without a designer. Theres only one possible explanation for it all, and that is a creative power of an all wise God." God has given meaning to everthing that exists, and without God there is no meaning to anything. This is ultimately where evoulutinary philosophy must lead. It is mans attempt to escape moral accountability for his actions from an omnipotent, righteous creator. As the Bible says in Romans 1:22 "Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools."
What the christian believes about about creation, masculinity and feminity, history, literature will greatly impact how we live and interact with those in our culture. There is no neutral ground . We are affected by our culture whether we realise it or not.
Think Biblically will help to instruct and challenge christians to see if they are reflecting Biblical truth in the postmodern world in which we live. This is an important and relevant book for twenty first century christians.

It seems in our day that few Christians understand what they believe and even worse most churches fail to communicate sound doctrine and instead choose to build churches based on experience or pragmatic teachings of men (Mark 7:1-13).

This edition from the staff of Master's College and Seminary in Los Angeles, CA gives its readers a biblical worldview. Notice I said "biblical" because this book does a wonderful job of presenting the Bible is the sole authority for faith and practice. Every worldview from politics to feminism is examined in the light of Scripture. Because this book makes the Bible its source for divine truth and authority, the writers avoid their opinions and give us God's view of a world gone mad.

This is a great book and I would encourage all full time servants to purchase this book and seek to understand a biblical worldview not tarnished by politics, money, or sin.

I'm a college student, and I ordered a bunch of these books for the men's small group that I attend, and all of us can agree that we're learning a lot. John MacArthur and his colleagues do a great job presenting the inerrancy of the Bible, and what negative ramifications there could be if our presuppositions are otherwise. Definitely helps us to understand the Bible and God more.

A really outstanding book exploring the concept and role of the Christian mind throughout history with a challenge to the reader to be not just a hearer of the word, but a doer as well. MacArthur is thoroughly Reformed in his presentation of the Christian worldview laying out the foundation of the Creation-Fall-Redemption model as the framework within which is built the Christian mind. MacArthur begins with presenting the case for the sufficiency and authority of Scripture and continues to remind the reader that developing intellect is not the goal of the Christian worldview - rather, it is bringing all things into focus using the lens of God's revealed Word. MacArthur writes that "the Christian mind should be a repository of God's revealed truth." The rest of Part One of the book presents the foundational truths of the nature of God, the nature of man and man's responsibility to walk in obedience to God's will in his relations to others.

MacArthur then taps the expertise of his faculty at The Master's College in Part Two as each chapter explores some component of a biblical worldview. The chapters cover issues such as understanding the currently postmodern thought, profiling true masculinity and femininity, an in depth examination of the role of worship and music, a contrasting view of psychology with true biblical counseling, a look at the significance of science, the role of Christian education, an honest reflection on history, a biblical worldview of the church in relation to the state, a biblical concept of economics and the importance of literature and the arts in culture from a Christian perspective. Each chapter really could be its own book on the subject, presented from a professor whose expertise is in that particular field of study.

Personally, I enjoyed the book, especially the foundational concepts presented in Part One. MacArthur's Coming to Grips with Sin (chapter 4) was absolutely outstanding and is essential for the Christian to understand that Scripture teaches that sin is the problem with the human dilemma and the only viable solution to the condition of mankind is offered through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. Every chapter had something valuable - a nugget of pure gold - but the second half of the book was pretty tough treading. Overall, a very good book that would be an excellent recommendation for any person interested in examining how their faith addresses all facets of life beyond just the issues of religion.

Each of the girls have different dna mixes with different animals. Ichoga with a cat, Minto with a bird, Retasu with a dolphin, Purin (my favorite) with a monkey and Zakuro with a wolf. As cute as it gets Ichoga has a crush on the most popular boy in her school ( I think she's in sixth or seventh grade not to sure)! Alright--it doesn't get any cuter or sweeter than this. Characters are named after sweets, and their base is a pastry cafe built to look like a tiered wedding cake. They attack with bells and batons, and their enemies are mice, sparrows, and other everyday animals that aliens have injected with something to make them big. And the preteen love story is there in its entirety.

This is a cute series, but don't read it if you have an allergy to cute.

Who understands publishers? Just because a guy is no longer alive doesn't mean his words were worthless. With so many badly designed products on the market today, you would think a book like this one, which gives the designer a fighting chance of realising an excellent product, would be in multiple reprints. If you can find a copy of this book, make it your own. This book tells you how products SHOULD be designed. Better still, badger Amazon and the publishers (Addison Wesley - who should know better!) until they reprint it. Pugh's memory deserves the credit, even if the great man is no longer with us.

Treating Affect Phobia is a manual for short-term work with relatively high-functioning individuals whose emotional blocks influence their work, relationships, or their quality of life. Novices and senior clinicians alike will find this manual useful. It focuses psychodynamic work by combining the exposure work of CBT, and it elaborates CBT by including exposure to avoided emotions. The writing is clear and direct. There is enough specificity for a novice, and the exercises at the end of the chapters help the reader to absorb and practice the material. Those clinicians with a CBT background will find the book refreshingly present-focused. The explanation of defenses and the careful working with defenses and anxiety-regulation are clear and understandable even without a psychodynamic background. For those unfamiliar with exposure therapy, the book offers a radical way of enhancing comfort with avoided affect.

For the senior clinician, the book offers a unique and efficient approach to short-term dynamic Psychotherapy, but there is enough subtlety for repeated readings.

The book targets high-functioning individuals (those with a GAF score 50 or above), but has chapters on working with those with less stable object relations. I have found that the model can be adapted for those with a lower GAF.

A very useful manual

The authors have produced a very clear presentation of how to identify and treat psychodynamic conflicts using active methods. For the beginning therapist, it offers a step by step detailed approach. For the more advanced therapist, it has a very clear and useful organization that provides a resource for thinking about the stuck places in therapy. Both supervisors and supervisees will find it helpful.

A Manual of Great Character

Affect Phobia is a brilliant clinical model, the Triangle of Conflict is a teaching tool of beauty, and this manual is a pleasure to read. The theory is creatively integrative and above all functional. I find my thinking clarified, I know how to stay on track when a client's avoidant behavior takes center stage, and at all times I have guidance in attending to emotion. My recommendation is: buy it, read it, share it with the people you supervise! Your work will be enriched.

Lucid and Illuminating

This is without a doubt the clearest book I have ever read about how to understand and formulate psychodynamic conflict, and how to address it in psychotherapy. Integrating elements of psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and interpersonal models, the manual is at once respectful of clients and a very good "how-to" for therapists at any level. It is deceptively simple, in that appears to be for those new to the field, but in fact it is astute and complex.

Outstanding Conceptual Clarity

This is the only "manual" I recommend to supervisees or seasoned colleagues. It is a wonderful "how-to" for psychotherapists, and so much more. Integrating elements from both psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral traditions, it offers a simple yet powerful conceptual framework for understanding inner psychological conflict. The model clearly illuminates how maladaptive behavior in a client (or anyone)represents their best effort at avoiding feared emotional states. In creating so much conceptual clarity, it allows the therapist to more readily arrive at a place of compassion and effective intervention. Numerous and creative strategies are suggested for working with inner conflict, often in the context of clinical vignettes illustrating exemplary and inspiring work of mature and compassionate therapists. It never trivializes the depth of human suffering. This is a wonderful book!

Excellent book for law school students

I am a torts law professor and this is one of the two books I recommend my students use as supplementary reading. It is a relatively short but comprehensive and very well written summary of the material. Torts is a required course in all law schools and this book will help any student get a more complete understanding of the topic. Students, will, of course, need to read and prepare the assignments from whatever text the professor assigns. This book will work best as a supplement to those texts. By the way, the other book I recommend to my students is The Forms and Functions of Tort Law by Abraham.

I'm currently a 2L and last year, I used a plethora of study aids. I found this book to be the most helpful for Torts class. The book explains the history behind the subjects and then what the substantive law is. It lays everything out very logically and is organized in a way that makes sense as well. While it doesn't have any comprehensive case summaries, if you truly want to understand the law of torts, you can't go wrong with this book.

Great Supplement to Understand Torts

This book was recommended by my torts professor as a supplement to readings. I found it extremely helpful and a great overview of the torts material. My professor was nice enough to tell us which pages would be beneficial to read which was helpful but the glossary of terms is great for going back to a topic for a quick refresher of the subject. The book is well written but simple enough for a first year to easily grasp the topics covered. Some other pros? It mentions specific important tort cases most likely covered in ALL first year torts classes (Palsgraf among many). I think this book would be a great review for the final as well as using it as a supplement to assigned class readings.
I have the older version and it seems some of the law is not current, I do know the book has been republished in 2006 and therefore might include those revisions. Definitely a must for first year law students.

This book is a must have for any torts class. Forget Gilberts. This book is easy to read, straight forward, and gives examples on every topic it discusses. This book is the secondary text book in my torts class and was highly reccommended by my professor. If you are confused about anything, this book will make any complex theory easy to understand.

A really outstanding concise - but thorough hornbook

This is a really great book - it also is small ( less weight to carry in bookbag ) - it has some short commings ( light on product liability ) - I used this with Epstein on Torts ( Aspen Hornbook ) Shapo on Torts ( West Hornbook ). You will find that all authors give some topics less attention than others - hence the plethora of hornbooks. Emmanuals & Gilberts are not so good.. Also - get the California Baby Bar Essay problems and answers - this is the best resource for practice exam taking. If you're lazy - get the Black Letter Law series book on torts for very concise rules - I used this as a rule book to capsulate the restatements so I could remember them for the test

I've been looking for a poetry book, for a very long time, that I could just sit back, relax and really get into. I searched through aisles and aisles of boring, unemotional poetry with themes I just didn't relate with by various writers. I finally found what is in my opinion, the perfect poetry book! Every poem in this book is outstanding. It is the most enjoyable book I've ever read. And most definitely the type of book that one would read over and over again. I was also pleasantly surprised to find out that it's written by the author of one of my favorite children's books! Highly recommended!

Reminiscent of Poe and Frost....

In my opinion, the way Giselle Steele writes --with a gentle, tender touch that leaves a lasting impression--is reminiscent of Robert Frost; the same deep appreciation of nature, the same vivid imagery, the same deep emotion, fill every verse. The poems in this book truly come from the heart, and make the absolutely remarkable photographs--also by Giselle Steele --suddenly come to life. I recommend this book highly!

This fascinating book of poems will remain a part of my life forever. The poetry is very moving and diverse. The book begins with a journey to the ocean under the heading "Captive Soul of The Sea" then takes you to a realm of fantasy in the section entitled "Ivory Tower Of Dreams." There are three more sections filled with awesomely written poetry, each as enjoyable and exquisite as the next. I recommend it highly for all poetry lovers, and for anyone who wants to be taken on a fantastic journey through reading.

"The Wayfarer's Stone" is one of the most inspiring works of poetry I have read in a good long while. I purchased mine at Amazon and ended up getting another one from the publisher's website beacuse they offered autographed copies (at special pricing, by the way). Would absolutely love to attend a reading of The Wayfarer's Stone by the author. Highly recommended reading!

I just finished reading this and I have to say what a lovely gift this book has given to me. It feels like time stops as you read this - I was totally into each poem. I especially liked the author's comments at the back of the book. She explained her inspiration behind each poem and that was really neat. Does anybody know if she is currently on a book signing tour? I would love to get this autographed. Truly a wonderful book of poetry!

This book is by far the best guide to mind/body techniques to healing and recovery of the body and spirit. Dr. Benson's Mind/Body Clinic at Beth Israel Deaconness Hospital in Boston is widely respected and uses all the techniques made available here. Indispensible.

My doctor recommended this book for me and I found it very helpful. The chapter on nutrition is lacking in my opinion (see Superfoods RX by Pratt.)I like the fact that there are many practical applications that are not "so far out there" that someone who is not into Eastern healing can still gain much from it.

The Wellness Book has been extremely helpful to me and is one of the best investments I have made in myself. I first used this book 10 years ago and was able to establish some healthful living goals and actions for myself that improved my physical conditioning immensely. I continue to use it today. What I really like about this book is that it enables each reader to really focus in on their individual lifestyles, needs, and habits and develop specific, realistic, and individualized action plans for improved and healthful living. The improved physical condition that I realized as a result of focusing on a plan and actions enabled me to climb mountains in the Sierra Nevada. I have also used techniques in this book to successfully address anxiety. This week I pulled the book off of my shelf and am going at it again. I am having fun with this exercise because I can compare my "10 loves" from 10 years ago to my "10 loves" of today and put a plan in place to realize them. Many thanks to the authors for such insightful and all emcompassing work. This book is as useful and current today as it was the day it was written.
