The Best Book About Colonial Stone Quarrying
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-29
As a mason and a rock lover I've always wanted to know how it was done back in the day when there were no jackhammers, power drills or cranes. I also spend a lot of time in the woods and this book is a great way to help date some of those old rocks and crumbling stone foundations in the abandoned and overgrown farms and fields of New England. A great companion to Wessels "Reading the Forested Landscape". Indepth research and detailed illustrations give the how, when and why different techniques were utilized and developed with time and technology. The reprinted illustrations date from the 17th through the 19th centuries and really show what a few well leveraged poles and pulleys can move. The book shows every tool and covers every imaginable technique for quarrying, splitting, finishing, hoisting or transporting stone prior to the advent of railroads and steam power. Definitely a one of a kind book due to the limited research on the topic. Great for scholars and amateurs alike.

The Life of America's Greatest Arts & Crafts Silversmith
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1999-03-06
My review for JCK Book Club: You say the name Arthur J. Stone doesn't ring a bell? You're not alone. This is the first book that has gone into depth on the subject of a single silver workshop operating during the Arts & Crafts period.

The Stone shop created the finest silver of the time, and it is ironic that America's finest silver workshop was owned by an emigrant from Sheffield, England. Stone's shop, and Stone specifically, is know by museum curators, knowledgeable collectors, and antique dealers of which two or three specialize in Arts & Crafts silver.

Stone, a master silversmith, inspected all finished pieces leaving his shop and made certain that since his name was stamped on every piece they were up to his uncompromisingly high standards. Stone specialized in the design and chasing of the handwrought holloware and flatware. His delicate and totally controlled flat chasing was to become a trademark along with his sense of floral design and simplicity of form. Every piece produced was handmade at a time when Charles Ashbee deplored the use of machinery-made products for there inferior quality.

The book illustrates the breadth of Stones talent in the pieces he designed and smithed before expanding his shop. Most impressive were the talented craftsmen he employed as evidence in the wide range of products pictured. Those who put the most handwork into a piece was rewarded with his maker's mark next to the Stone workshop mark; an unusual and unselfish token of respect for his craftsmen. A section is reserved as a maker's mark reference which is helpful in identifying these craftsmen and for dating their work.

As a hands-on silversmith specializing in restoration, I have had the good fortune of handling many exceptional pieces of Stone silver. Its functional design and outstanding craftsmanship can still be used as a standard for all silversmiths. Elenita Chickering, the book's author and Stone descendent, has the distinction of knowing first hand, and through shop records, how the business functioned and the interpersonal goings-on between Stone and the other workers.

Arthur J. Stone, 1847-1938, Designer and Silversmith illustrates the intimate world of the last great Arts & Crafts silver workshop--anywhere.

If you read Dr. Stone's other book's, you'll really enjoy this glossary. Whenever I feel to tired to read a book, I flip open this glossary and read a couple of pages. You can learn expanded amounts of information just by reading a single page. Also, look for Sarayon Michael White's books in the future. He is really amazing. You can read about him and his service work at [website]. Read the "messages" section. Very inspiring.

T.Carmi was a scholarly poet with a deep historical knowledge of the Hebrew language. His own poems often had a clear tightness and economy. He often weaves his own experience and perceptions into ironic reflections on difficult Israeli realities.

This is the book on Atlantis that contains all the answers!

If you are an Atlantis aficionado you can't afford to miss this one! Intelligently written; ultimately descriptive, it's the story of Atlantis' final days. The author has included a bit of everything - the Mystery Schools, Qabalah, Tarot, Astrology - it's all here. With an interesting blend of all the metaphysical sciences and esoteric knowledge, the story is told by Lynci an Atlantean Princess and Premier Diamond Class Initiate at the mystery schools. You experience first hand the perils of the latter days, the rising sea, the earthquakes, fires and the destruction of beautiful Atlantis as well as the intricate planning intended for the safe removal of Atlantis' poplulation before the deluge. You will be on the edge of your seat wanting to know what happens next to Lynci, her family and friends. This book contains an extremely interesting theory about what Atlantis was, and the reason for her seemingly untimely end. Here you will find answers to who was behind it all and why, as well as what became of Atlantis' historical records. This look at Atlantis' end times is incredibly imaginative - or perhaps not so. Perhaps instead it is a magical and marvelously detailed memory from long, long ago!

I would highly recommend this informative series about dinosaurs. It's much better than the Magic Tree House series and well written too.The facts are presented via the "Fossil Finder" which my son thought was very cool and the accompanying maps and fact files only added to its appeal. We have a new word in our house now-'JATOM'.I enjoyed reading it as much as my 6 year old son and can't wait to get my hands on the other books in this series.

Are you curious about Jatom??? Read the book.

Robert Enoch Withers was my great grandfathers' brother. I own one of the original prints. Each member of my grandmother's family was given one, which came to my father, her eldest son, and now me. So the author was my g- great uncle. There are many members of the Withers family who would like to have a copy of this book. The book is old enough to come in the class of public domain. So, being as close kin as anyone to Robert Enoch, I encourage the reprint of it. The book is a great source of what life was like in Virginia during his time. We all would do well to learn some of the lessons he wrote about. Ernestine Tabor

WONDERFUL OBSERVATIONS AND PROSE HERE
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-17
This work was first published in 1956 and as far as I can tell it is out of print at this time and what a pity that is. This is nature and travel writing at it's very best. This is a part of a four part series on America, nature and the land. The author goes into out of the way places and in his wonderful prose discribes nature and it's seasons. This volume, number three, addresses autumn. This is a part of the 20,000 thousand mile journey, from coast to coast. The author follows the season from the east coast to the west coast, making observations and sharing his thoughts. This is truely nature writing at it's best and I highly recommend this one.
