Joining others in the `basics of hard sciences' series is an important guide recommended as a pick for any student of college-level biology - including quite a few at the advanced high school level. Students here receive an introduction to the science of biology, an overview of the history and key scientists and concepts involved in the discipline, and a topical arrangement which lends to easy browsing and information retrieval. An outstanding introduction combining simplicity of access with concrete facts.

In BEAUTY AND THE BADGE, we meet Mary Shaw, a preschool teacher who was an unfortunate witness to a murder. We also meet FBI agent Ford Devereaux, a man assigned to follow Mary in hopes of finding the jewels taken before the murder. At first, Ford believes Mary has them in her possesion and is part of a smuggling ring. But after he kidnaps her, for her own safety, and gets to know her, Ford realizes that Mary is only an innocent pawn who is now being hunted by a ruthless killer. Now on the run, Ford and Mary struggle to find a safe haven and survive long enough for Mary's innocence to be proven. Love was definitely the farthest thing on their minds, and the only thing they couldn't escape.

BEAUTY AND THE BADGE is a fast-paced read that will enthrall you until the very end. You'll love it. Trust me!

Best Fiction Since 'Huckleberry Finn'
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-28
This is the best fiction I've read since "Huckleberry Finn." Honest to God. Great books quietly teach you truths you'd never thought much about - but are the better for having learned. This book does that in important areas of your mind and life that you may find were ill fed before.

Within a few phrases, or a page, or constantly added to throughout the book, each character becomes someone you would recognize walking down the street. The places this story visits will become almost-memories of your own. This is not only a broadly fascinating story; it's also a writer's book. I suspect this will become a writer's reference - a collection of flawlessly written phrases that perfectly condense relevant issues into single sentences.

My only regret is that I can't read this for the first time - again. Read the first chapter and you'll read the entire story; it's never slow and it never lets go. Then recommend it to friends; everyone appreciates a solid recommendation of a good book.

A Culture of Gratitude
This poetic history of the Coast Salish peoples adds great understanding of the depth and resilience of the coastal tribal culture.
It is a beautifully bound, small book with heart-touching photos of Indian speakers and elders.
It is highly acclaimed by academic experts and by tribal leaders and elders.
The book is used in college and high school classes as a text reference in cultural history, but its main audience is with tribal and non-tribal people looking for the inspiration of the wisdom of the Pacific Northwest earliest people. People from countries all over the world have this book, and it has been used as a book reference in conferences with world leaders, such as,Nelson Mandela.
I recommend it as a beautiful gift book, and one that would be of interest to readers of books, such as, Radical Hope.

The Steamy Side of Your IT Department

Mark Stone's new book "Behind the Screen: Hacking Hollywood" is for every one of us who has eavesdropped on the couple in line beside us at Starbucks.

The juicy tidbits of gossip main character Jonathan Davis gathers at his new job of monitoring company e-mails may make an adult business owner blush. Half of the readers will wonder what kind of people write steamy stuff on their company correspondence....the other half will wonder if their IT guy read the thank you note they sent to their girlfriend after that most unusual evening.

Stone could rely on the titillating aspects of a career that pays you to peek into co-workers inner most communications, but he proves to be a better storyteller than that. Sure, Davis hooks up with a couple co-eds at an IT function, scores dates with bondage e-mail senders from his office and trades MSN messages with a 17-year-old, but Stone does a masterful job of humanizing his "I.T. Romeo" before his escapades get out of hand.

Early in the book Stone sets up his main character to be more than just a hot computer geek. John Davis is trying to run away from his past and create a new future.

"John, 34-years-old, is a recovering gambling addict. He has not gambled at all in over a year. His evenings as an overly active participant at the card tables of Morongo Casino in Cabazon are behind him. He is proud of himself, but is heavily in debt."

Only a writer like Stone could make a blackmailing tabloid writer non-cliché. He uses his gift to bring the reader along on a wild fantasy escapade. The difference in this novel is you want to believe. Stone does a masterful job of entertaining while storytelling. He throws enough truth of computers, relationships, coffee shops and coincidences to carry off the far-fetched.

At times "Behind the Screen" reads more like a Hollywood screenplay than a novel. The twists and turns of each chapter are colorful, creative and continually ask you to believe the nearly unbelievable. A teenage girl who happens to know how to pick locks just as the skill is needed? An overworked boss who doesn't mind a mouthy, long-break taking new employee? Bank branches filled with some of the most outrageously hot to type employees? All these unusual coincidences are in the novel, but with Stone's incredible skill all come off as both believable and entertaining.

"Behind the Screen" is not for the prudish, but it is a fast-paced and fun read for anyone who has ever sent a personal e-mail at work.
