Exquisite color photos of handpainted stone cats.

This is a short book, only 46 pages, but is packed with excellent color photos of stone cats created by artist Nagata Yoshimi. The cats are actually river stones that have been painted to look like cats. The photos are just as beautiful as the cats themselves, showing everything from a rock concert (cat playing to other stone cats), cats hiding in the leaves, a white cat nestled amid flowering clover, dozing cats, and lots of other delightful photos. At the end of the book is a step-by-step tutorial, showing you how to make your own stone cats

I wish it were possible to convey how much enjoyment this little book of cats painted on river rocks has given me. I have even tried painting a few cats of my own. What sheer delight! Thank you, Mr. Nagata, for all the pleasure you have given me.

This is the book for you if you are obsessed with the Ancient Ones and Rock Writings left behind! Artwork to us, but actual messages to others back then, this book provides very insightful information about "the Ones who Went Away". The photography is intriguing and the book's layout is amazingly well done. It will have you running for your computer to book a flight to the southwest so you can see for yourself!

Stone Chisel And Yucca Brush: Colorado Plateau Rock Art collaboratively developed by Ekkehart Malotki (Professor of Languages, Northern Arizona University) and archaeologist Donald E. Weaver, Jr. is a stunningly impressive coffee table book which is filled from cover to cover with gorgeous color photography of ancient Native American rock art, as well as a detailed, "reader friendly" text explaining the most recent discoveries, theories, and speculations about these fascinating rock art creations in the American Southwest, and what they represented to the Native American peoples and cultures who made them. Stone Chisel And Yucca Brush is strongly recommended for Native American Studies supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.

This is a terrific exploration of the association between Pound and Yeats at Stone Cottage in the mid teens. Longenbach examines the relationship between the elder and younger poet--Pound's imitation and adulation of Yeats, and Yeat's willingness to explore the various impulses that result from his association with Pound's energy and combativeness--with a thoroughness that is illuminating. In many respects, I found this to be one of the best interpretations of many of the subsequent energies of High Modernism (its hermeticism, the sense of exile, of expulsion from the "garden" of the pre-Great War world)that I've read. The influence of Yeat's interest in the occult on Pound is also rather revealing, and I found myself rereading the Cantos is a slightly different light afterwards. Two small criticisms: Longenbach rather neglects the influence of Dorothy Pound on the relationship between the two poets, although he notes her early Cubist paintings and makes a brief examination of her relationship with Pound. Although one cannot fault Longenbach for maintaining his tight focus on the two poets, one cannot disregard the impact that ia visual artist might have on two such polymathic artists. I personally think this was a missed opportunity, and I hope Longenbach will add new material on the trio in future editions. The second niggling criticism is the author's tendancy to repeat himself in "touchstone" sentences throughout the work--one has the sense that Longenbach is working his sources a bit too hard and substituting clarity for nuance in such moments. Regarding the use of this study with accompanying texts, one is best served by the new Library of America edition of Pound, Poems and Translations, the standard New Directions edition of the Cantos, as well as the Finneran edition of Yeats. Longenbach examines enough previously unpublished texts of Pound that the LOA edition is indispensible. In short, I think this is an excellent secondary text for incipient PhDs and poets, and Longenbach should be praised for his remarkable study of these important Modernist poets.

An entertaining and different kind of book about Panama

I read a lot of fiction and, quite frankly, loved this book as much as anything I've read lately. Stough has written an unpretentious chronicle of Panama from the Spanish conquest to the present--and beyond. The story is told through people connected by blood and also by Panama's rich, varied culture. There are enough heroic, doomed, quixotic characters--spread over 350 years--to shame the Bard, a collection of natives, Spanish conquistadors, English pirates, opportunists of every ilk and, of course, French and American canal builders.

The United States of America - The Stone Kingdom of Daniel's prophecy

Review Date: 2008-04-09

After reading Stone Kingdom, I feel Mr. Capt presents a most compelling case for America being the fifth and final great kingdom of Daniel, chapter 2. There are so many apparent clues given in Scripture to support this conclusion, as cited in his book, that it is amazing more Christians do not see it! As with all his other books that I've read, he verifies fulfillment of biblical prophecy with evidence found in secular history and archaeology. It would certainly be worth the time of any serious Bible student to thoughtfully read this perceptive book to perhaps gain additional insight into the role that this God-ordained nation has in the service of Jesus Christ to establish justice, truth, righteousness and liberty in the earth. Mr. Capt maintains we cannot escape our responsibility, because God is Sovereign. He will certainly work out His Divine purpose for America!

Mr. Capt again makes the complex simple. Understanding the "keys" of the bible...unlock many of the mysteries of prophecy. Many wonder why "America" the greatest super power of all time is not mentioned in the scriptures. It has been said, this vast Christian nation has no particular role in the "end times." Mr. Capt shows how America (stone kingdom) plays the final culminating role of this age. Excellent Book!

Unearth this diamond in the rough, Stone Palaces, immediately! Climber Geof Childs' ability to turn a phrase - be it recounting a Vietnam firefight or a Himalayan expedition gone askew - reduces scribes like Tim O'Brien (The Things They Carried) and John Krakauer (Into Thin Air) to mere belayers. Mid-book you'll find "Bah," just about the finest wilderness love story ever penned. I knew Geoff was hilarious when he taught our ragtag NW Outward Bound '81 group to climb stone palaces. I'm sure grateful he delivered by way of a book nearly twenty years later.

Socrates Would Be Proud (if he weren't dead)

In "Stone Palaces," Mr. Childs draws on portions of his fascinating past to create cohesive, inspiring vignettes. This book will keep climbers and non-climbers up all night on its own merits, but will hold a special attraction for anyone who has ever attempted to capture, on paper, the meaning of a personal experience.

This book is inspiring. First, the writing is clean and concise and keeps the reader "in the room." Second, the stories bring their settings alive, whether they take place in a Vietnamese jungle, on the sides of distant mountains, or in an abandoned church in the Eastern US. Third, and most importantly, "Stone Palaces" reminds us why Socrates said "the unexamined life is not worth living." Buy it, read it, give it to a friend and buy it again (it won't be returned to you any time soon).

A GREAT STORY CONTIUNES IN BOOK FOUR

I got this book sometime ago and I am very surprised that this author's books has not taken off in sales. In this fourth book, Willard takes on the horror of the Vietnam war. The story seems to be more edgey. The edge in this story is probably because Willard is a highly decorated paratrooper. The characters comes off as real people. And because TW has witness war firsthand, it really shows in the writing. TW deals with issues peculiar to blacks in the military with insight and compassion. This is a history lesson told in an adventurous, dramatic and sometimes a funny way. TW next book deals with a member of the Sharp family in Desert Storm. Those of you who have not read the Sabre Chronicle need to check out this great story for the first time. I recommend you start from the first book named Buffalo Soldier, then The Sable Doughboys and later the Wings of Honor. This story will not disappoint; guaranteed !!!!

Ms Reichel's book, which she also illustrated, is a lovely, touching tale in the style of such well-known legends as "The Juggler of Notre Dame." It tells the story of Remi, a French stonecutter, and how he comes to fulfill the promise of his talents in his final sculpture. Although the book is for young people, like Shel Silverstein's "The Giving Tree," it contains truths that human beings of all ages should realize.

Review Date: 2004-04-30
I recently picked up this book and was so taken by the storyline I finished it in a day. The author has created honest characters that the reader genuinely cares about.

The setting is a ranch outside of LA, used as a set for Hollywood projects. Sammie, the female protaganist, works as a medical assistant whose job discription surpasses expectations at a medical clinic, staffed to care for the many people who live on, and visit the Ranch to work. Sammie meets the love of her life and the story takes off from there, but everything is not as it seems, and the author has a few unexpected surprises.

The loyalty and friendships in the book invoke a heartwarming quality that keeps you rooting for these people through their ups and downs. You will want more once the story ends.

The second book in the Trilogy is called MALLOTT MEADOW, followed by the third book titled THE KEY. If you are looking for a bit of sentiment, and characters you will think about long after, this book won't disappoint.
