I have loved the narnia books all my life and found this new book very interesting because it told me about the authors childhood which made me feel that I knew him. The book is also a great romantic story about his friendship and then marriage to the author Joy Gresham.

As an avid reader since childhood of the Chronicles of Narnia, I was thrilled to read this wonderful biography of C. S. Lewis. The author paints a detailed picture of his privileged childhood in Belfast, Ireland, followed by unhappy years at English boarding schools.
I enjoyed reading about his many years at Oxford Univeristy, first as a brilliant student and later as a professor. His touching romance with American author Joy Gresham and her tragic death touched my heart.
This is a wonderful book and I recommend it to adults and young people. Cathy Gustavson, retired professor

"Magic Time" in the Village

Never heard of Caffe Cino? Try Bernadette Peters, Sam Shepard . . . Al Pacino? Yes, all got stage time in their fledgling careers at the legendary Greenwich Village cafe/theatre known as Caffe Cino. It was the seminal womb of Off-Off-Broadway theatre in New York. This space, inhabited by founder Joe Cino and a host of practically mythic characters, was a non-judgemental---and magical---laboratory for a generation of new theatre artists, many but not all gay. It was a place where they could risk, and often fail, but also create groundbreaking successes.

Scholar Wendell Stone has done a masterly job of snatching important historical interviews, first-hand accounts, and documentary artifacts from the precipice of obscurity. We are all richer for it. Moreover, he does so with such grace and obvious affection for the subject that the factual read turns out to be a most pleasant ride. Woven through the saga of the location is the elegant tragedy of the man, Joseph Cino, a figure practically unknown, but a determined soul who literally sacrificed himself for his small corner of artistic influence. Stone has redeemed that sacrifice with this simple but illuminating snapshot of a "magic time" and place---New York's Greenwich Village in the 1960s---and the merry band of genderbenders who presided over Caffe Cino. New Yorkers (wherever you may live); theatre lovers; gay historians; students of life, love, and loss---this book is for you.

I have to end this review with a disclaimer: I know Wendell Stone very well. He is a most respected colleague and friend. We did PhD work concurrently and I watched this material develop from an idea to an important and exciting work. I've loved this topic for a long time now and am pleased to see that Wendell's treatment of it has been so appreciated. It's a good book by a good guy. Read and enjoy!

tells the story of how one of the US's most profound archaeological sites almost ended up a trailer park, but was saved thanks to some efforts of concerned citizens. Then this book gives a good concise overview of the site itself. But i had some questions,at it's peak just what was the population of Cahokia. How far from the center of the Monk's Mound is the population considered to be a part?I've read as high as 38,000 and then as low as 2,000 at it's peak, about 1100.From reading this book,it seems that Cahokia actually had a very short span of influence in regard to years, how about territory as well? Then there is the question of Mound 72,where there was evidence of human sacrifice.Too often this info is pushed under the rug or dismissed as propoganda from early catholic missionaries.Actually instead of making the Amerindian look like a bloodthirsty savage the effect is the opposite. There are some accounts i've read that allude to the overthrow of the Cahokia chiefdoms because of this practice, not revelry in the ritual of holding a live beating heart up to the sun as in the case of the Aztecs.Maybe this was the reason for the short span of years for the rulership of the Cahokia chiefdoms. No book i've yet read deals in any length on this subject except a few archaeological journals, most of them only lightly. The fact that not much info is available on this could mean that maybe this although a shocking practice,it was not a frequent or popular one and this type of ceremony only took place once in a "blue moon"

The series, Digging for the Past, is always intelligible, informative and fun to read; and I found "Cahokia Mounds" is no exception to this.
The book was an eye opener to me, as it is a geographic area that I would never have expected archeologists to discover such a major site peopled by what seems to have been an advanced civilization. As in the Southwest, some of the "mystery" of the Cahokia indians appears to be similar to the Anazasi around whom there also are numerous theories of their lives and disappearance. In addition to this, the authors explain the discovery and subsequent excavations and studies in such a way as to make the mounds and the civilization they represent relevant and accessible today.
After reading "Cahokia Mounds" I would be interested in knowing more about this Native American culture that lived in the Midwest. In conclusion the book was well-written and enjoyable, and I continue to look forward to other books in this series.

Poems Of A Broad Spectrum

Review Date: 2004-09-19
My poetry is only secular, at first, then grades into philosophy, science, and theology towards the very end. The final poem, Cradle Of Souls, has wide potential implications as to how we perceive ourselves and could therefore possibly temper, or even dilute, the dangerous and harmful acts of all people. From the local school yard bullies, to the local criminals, to suicidals, to terroist groups, and into the very top echelons of governments everywhere. It is also interesting to note that the Cradle Of Souls poem, the last finale of Carusoism, was a revelation from an incident in 1990 when the Holy Spirit came to my aid while I was wearily driving a semi through eastern Ohio. From His single sphere glowing rays of Holy Gold, Silver, and White revitalized me, soon levitated the whole rig, continued to do another half hour of miracles for me, got me back on schedule, even ahead, and said before finally leaving me - "Know that we love you." "Do praise the Lord." "And never forget that a miracle occurred tonight." All in non verbal communication. And I clearly remembered that very same non verbal communication being used in what I call, Cradle Of Souls.

A Dickensian style novel said with much fewer words

The Jago was one of, if not the worst slums in London. Dicky Perrot is the main character of the story and we follow him form age 8 to about 17. His fight for survival and the responsibility he feels for his mother and sister whilst his Father is in prison makes you feel like crying. He has nothing and knows, as the local eccentric put it, that the Jago had got him and that there are only two ways out for him - to become a "Swellmobsmen" ( successful thief ) or death. Dicky is encouraged by the local Parson, Father Sturt, who is tireless in his work with the people of the Jago, to try to make something decent and honest with his life and enjoy all the things that the people who he robs enjoy and manages to secure him a job as a delivery boy for the local chandler. Unfortunately for Dicky he is dismissed thanks to an old friend who does not want him to take the straight and narrow path. After this Dicky goes down hill fast, he loses patience with his mother who takes to the Gin and leaves Em his sister to crawl in the gutter and fend for herself, his Father, disenchanted with life after coming out of prison, does his one last fatal job and at the end we see a small, poor desperate Dicky and like his old friend Beveridge told him years before, there are only two ways out of the Jago... Find out which way Dicky gets out in this excellent and realistic portrayal of life in a London slum at the turn of the century.

Harshly Realistic

Arthur Morrison's novel provides an excellent (if harsh) counterpoint to the relative gentility of Great Expectations or Wuthering Heights. You may be thinking, "Dickens and Bronte didn't pull punches," but read A Child of the Jago, and suddenly Pip's life will seem downright bucolic.
Morrison gives the reader a window into the seamy underbelly of Victorian London, and exposes unimaginable living conditions and inhuman treatment. This book is a must-read if you enjoy Victorian literature. It brings to life a part of London that must be experienced to be believed.

Making Unified Messaging Work

Review Date: 2004-11-09
In the beginning there was the telephone. Then there e-mail, and not long after came sophisticated voice messaging systems that replaced the simple answering machines. Then all of this kind of communications becan to converge. The combined communications capability became called Unified Messaging. Cisco's Unity server is the state-of-the-art in unified messaging systems. And this book seems destined to be the Unity Bible.

This book covers unity. Part I, about a quarter of the book is on the concepts and architecture of the of the Unity system. A good bit of the material in this section covers features that are not discussed anywhere else.

Part II, about a third of the book is on Deployment. Unity is a very flexible system. That means that the installer has many options to consider, and the use of these options involves tradeoffs.

Part III is on the ongoing management and administration of a Unity system. What tools, for instance, are available to monitor the performance of the system and how to interpret the results that these tools give you.

This book walks you through the entire grooming process for your poodle starting with choosing the right supplies and then moving to brushing, bathing, and clipping. The detailed instructions are illustrated with clear photos to help you understand the grooming process.

It's really too bad this book is out of print. Although it hasn't been published in more than 30 years, this book still offers valuable information. My breeder recommended it and it's been a great resource for me. I highly recommend it!

I live in the Rochester area but it took visiting friends, who brought this book with them, to discover the area's treasures. We spent a wonderful day following one of the trips - the directions were superb, the explanations about each structure were well done - in short - I bought the book, read it, found some more hidden delights! This book is worth every penny!

"Cobblestone Quest" presents 17 self-guided tours, of cobblestone structures in upstate New York, that can be taken by car or bicycle. If you are unable to travel to this area, but enjoy learning about interesting architecture you will still enjoy this book. The authors, Rich and Sue Freeman, begin by presenting a background about the history of cobblestone structures.

In the United States, from 1825 to 1860, 90% of these structures were built within a 65-mile radius of Rochester, New York. The authors also discuss the geological makeup of the stones and the building techniques used to put the structures together. They mention that cobblestone is actually a construction method and not an architectural style. The most common architectural style of the cobblestone buildings is Greek Revival. The buildings are all unique unto themselves.

The book contains many photographs so that if you are unable to take the tour, you can see what some of these structures actually looked like. I really like how the book is set up. After reading the background information on cobblestones, the tours begin. Each tour lists the distance involved and the approximate time of the tour if taken by car. The authors give very detailed directions on where to start the tour and how to get to each location, much more descriptive than you would get from Mapquest.com!

Very interesting descriptive information is given about each address. At most stops, the original owner, the year built, the time period and the style are also listed. I really enjoyed reading background information that was given about the people living at these sites and how some of the buildings have evolved over time. Some of the homes have continued to be owned by the descendants of the families that built them. "Cobblestone Quest" is a book that I would highly recommend to readers who enjoy traveling to interesting places and learning about the places and people who have resided there. These tours can be taken by car, bicycle or by armchair as I did. I would also recommend it to people that live in the area of Rochester, New York. I think that they would find it fascinating to learn about these places that are in their own backyards.
