Margaret's books always sing. They are like music. Her first, Marriage of the Rain Goddess was pure poetry--and this one, her third, is similar. It is refreshing to find such writing in children's books. The illustrations are breathtaking. This book is like a dream.

A wonderful book! So lyrically written and beautifully illustrated
that it held the attention of my 11 year old son and 17 year old daughter
when I read it aloud to the family. Especially interesting were the author's
well-written notes at the end of the book that explained the symbolism used in the book.
As a result, the book was not only entertaining but gave us an opportunity to learn
about the Islamic mystics, the Sufi, and to see how allusions and metaphors were used
enhance the story. Get this book for your children -- so you can read it yourself!

A beautiful and unusual story. The writing is like rare jewels, and the illustrations are extraordinary. I enjoyed this book because it featured a female who undergoes a spiritual transformation. Because of the rich inner story this makes an excellent book for adults as well--particularly for lovers of the poet Rumi. Superb.

Lovecraft for people who don't like Lovecraft

Colin Wilson wrote this book because although he liked the basic ideas behind the "Lovecraftian" genre, he did not like the writing style of H.P. Lovecraft. His goal was to develop a well-written novel using the rules of the genre, such as making everything as real as possible in regards to references, events and places.

This book also deals extensively with the concepts that are more at home in a Frank Herbert novel, such as the limits of what it means to be human and what human beings are capable of. This book is part mystery, part science-fiction, part primer to Wilson's occult philosophy.

A great Lovecraftian suspense!

This is one of the best Lovecraft-style stories I have read. The suspense in this book is great. You never know what will be uncovered in the next page. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys a good suspense story.

Colin Wilson continues his exploration of "Intentionality" as a key element in his existential philosophy. If you liked The Mind Parasites, then you owe it to yourself to read this book (as well as The Space Vampires). His use of fiction as a vehicle to philosophical discourse is worth the effort to find these books.

Edward Gleason - perhaps because he has been a schoolmaster and a fund raiser in addition to a parish priest - knows prayer as so much richer and flesh-colored than the usual parochial pussilaminous nonsense that all but the most pious find off-putting or irrelevant.

This book has now been on the shelf in our bathroom (where most serious reading and reflecting happens) for two months. My wife and I - whose literary tastes are chalk and cheese - have both spent more time than we ought in there because we have been caught up in the touching immediacy of Gleason's stories.

That he links them to prayer - an ancient and sometimes offensive mystery - is genius.

So, I guess I do pray after all. I just didnt know to call it that.

Get a copy and put it in your bathroom. Better put a timer next to it or you'll never get your work done.

A Powerful Message Affirming Prayer

This book does something no other book on prayer has done, demonstrated the power of prayer through the stories of everyday people. Using the Book of Common Prayer as the loose outline, Gleason weaves a poignant portrait of people for whom prayer has become an integral part of their lives. If you like the "Purpose Driven Life" now read the Prayer Given Life to bring the message full circle. It will touch both your heart and your soul.

Mr. Gleason and his wife were witnesses to an ordinary, extraordinary moment. While driving home one evening they saw an owl in the garden. They watched it for a while. The evening continued. He uses this moment to show us the importance of watchfulness and silence. "The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him." (Habakkuk 2:20, BCP 20)" Using stories as tools for reflection on prayers from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer, Mr. Gleason not only brings the Prayer Book more fully alive but he shows us the nearness of God. This book is just as valuable to non-Episcopalians. We all are reminded of the nearness of God, of the ease of prayer, of the richness available to one who endeavors to make of her or his life one full of an awareness of God. I have been unwilling to put this book down. It is as if I am feeding on rich nectar. I feel nourished and made more alive. I recommend this book highly for anyone who desires to live a prayer-filled life.

Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Moustafa Gadalla's Pyramid Handbook is a unique, informative, and iconoclastic contribution to Egyptology with its focus on the pyramids of antiquity. Featured are the locations and dimensions of the interiors and exteriors of the pyramids; varied theories on the construction, purpose, and function of the pyramids; the sacred geometry that was incorporated into the design of the pyramids; and a great deal more. Pyramid Handbook is fresh, original, thorough, scholarly, completely accessible to the non-specialist general reader, and enhanced with useful illustrations of the sites and interiors of the Egyptian masonry pyramids. If you have an interest in Egyptology, the Pyramids, and iconoclastic archaeological studies, read Moustafa Gadalla's Pyramid Handbook.

From having traveled to Egypt myself, I can tell you that this is one of the best books on the pyramids I've ever read. If only I had this when I was there, I could have been so much more fullfilled. I was especially interested in the writtings on sacred geometry. I can't wait for for the next time I get a chance to go to Egypt and visit the pyramids armed with Gadalla's book. This is a must own for anyone traveling to Egypt or has ever wanted to know the truth about antient Egypt and the pyramids.

The sacred geometry of the pyramids and pyramid power are very interesting. Well researched, and well written.

This book is not a preaching manual or a homiletics textbook. Get "Christ-Centered Preaching" by Brian Chappell if that is what you are looking for. Instead, it is a reminder that God uses a variety of people and a variety of styles to advance His Kingdom. When I first started out preaching ten years ago, I spent a lot of time trying to sound like other preachers. This book shows us that it is pointless to do so and ultimately unnecessary. God can use the communication style He created in us to begin with.

These communicators have just a few things in common: they love God and work diligently to make Him known. Their styles, however, couldn't be more different and that is ultimately very encouraging. Drop the cash on this one. It's a winner.

What an excellent book! Dave doesn't come over as "preachy" and doesn't force a certain style upon you. When reading about my preaching style, I could only shake my head and say, "Wow! This is me. He is describing me." The interviews, tips and cautions are helpful. His book wil add zest to my preaching now that I am aware of the few tiny changes I need to make in my style of preaching, and he has challenged me to experiment more with other styles that I would feel comfortable with.

As a minister, without a normal preaching background, this book really is a Godsend. While reinforcing your personal style, with gems from some of the greatest communicators alive today, it also gives a glimpse into other styles that can be unbelievable tools in ministry. Chapters are well constructed to get more out of them. I especially liked the points of caution at the end of the chapters for each style. The CD is also a wonderful resource. A great and useful read for anyone who will ever speak in public!

I read this book 10 months after experiencing a miscarriage. What an amazing book. It is definitely moving and will help women to know they are not alone. The book is filled with tons of references for support groups, online support, local and national foundations, and lots of information on what you can do personally to heal from the loss of a baby. There is a GREAT section to be used by doctors or for women to know how to interact with your doctor during or after a loss. Every story is as unique as one's pregancy. I have since given this book as a gift. My only complaint is that the book was not carefully edited for spelling, grammar, or how it all fit on the page. For me it was hard to get past that. But it did not change the context, helpfullness, or sincereity of the book. Whether you read this book immediately following the loss of your angel or years after a loss you will no doubt find healing & strength.

Remembering Our Angels: Personal Stories Of Healing From A Pregnancy Loss is a perfect title for Hannah Stone's book. Each child that was lost in this book was a little
Angel, it just was not their time to take their place on this world just yet, for whatever reason it may be.

The first few chapters were very informative, while the last chapters were tear jerkers. Some entries were written by doctors that have experienced child loss on a personal basis or have had patients that have suffered through the loss of a child. Other entries were written by mother's or fathers that have also experienced child loss. I found a lot of information there that I had no idea even existed.

I did not know that there was a thing called a perinatal grieving kit. It includes sometimes a plaster mold for the parents to have a little hand or footprint, a container for a lock of hair, and a couple other little things to help remember the child instead of trying to forget what happened. The day a parent looses a child is forever scared on their hearts, and nothing will ever make that day disappear.

In Remembering Our Angels, it tells of ways parents grieved in their own ways. Most have found Internet support groups, talked with other parents that have had a loss, and have even found what works for them in order to help the grieving process. One thing that touched me was a balloon release ceremony. It in a way is like sending a gift up to your child in my opinion.

Having had a miscarriage of my own, this book brings to light a few things I've never thought of before. It is a great help to any who have lost a child no matter the age even if it was only a couple of weeks along or at the end of the nine month gestation period. If you or someone you know is hurting pick up a copy of Remembering Our Angels as well as Hannah Stone's other book Forever Our Angels, it has a lot of information between the pages for helping to heal the heart. 5 Hearts

Both [of Hannah Stone's] books were beautifully written and I felt that Hannah Stone had progressed after "Forever our Angels," to finding a much better way of writing about each stage of pregnancy loss; grief and the healing process with her second book "Remembering our Angels." Both books are honest and simply written and will have a big impact upon the reader from whatever walk of life.

"Forever our Angels" gives the reader a chance to read of others' experience of pregnancy loss, showing just how common it is and letting us know we are not alone. It is well written and easy to take your time over. "Remembering our Angels" is written in much more depth and I think that this would be much more useful for healing and managing grief. I would recommend this book of the two purely because it covers so much unspoken ground for every aspect of pregnancy loss.

Both books are very touching and the way they are set out makes them very easy to read and understand. Both have introductions from medical staff - one doctor in "Forever our Angels" to many more in "Remembering our Angels." I enjoyed reading the views of the professionals in the first chapter and felt comforted that it is now realised that validating the loss of all babies at whatever stage in pregnancy they are lost, is so important in the healing process.

"Remembering our Angels" felt like more of a journey for me; going through each stage of pregnancy loss and reading of how others coped with the experience and the grief. I felt that the point of this book is that they are still having to cope often without adequate support which is needed so much after losing a baby in pregnancy.

There are many good ideas of how to cope after pregnancy loss and many have had very positive experiences from being part of a group or organisation, both personally and in helping others. Both books give the message that this should not be a silent grief. As a volunteer for The Miscarriage Association, I found both extremely useful. They motivated me to appreciate that support for men, women and families experiencing this hidden grief was paramount, helping me to help them.

I feel that the author was very brave to touch on a subject so hidden and ignored in so many ways and I do think that many others will gain strength by reading the stories of loss and survival. It is important to understand that pregnancy loss is a part of our lives and to grow from it.

If you only could read and own one history book on Nazi Germany, this would be it. Don't let the 1245 pages daunt you, this is a very well written and readable book on the subject. Shirer was apparently a journalist and started research on the book when he first went to Germany in 1925. He spent 5-1/2 years writing it. The title pretty much explains it, it covers the rise of Adolf Hitler to the eventual fall of Berlin. There are other history books that cover specific aspects of the Nazi's, such as the recommended 2002 publication of Antony Beevor's The Fall of Berlin 1945, but this is the one history book on it all. Considering how the events covered set up the modern world, this should be essential reading for everyone on the planet.

I see that this is the first review for the hardcopy version of the book, which is the version of the text that I have. Those wanting to read other reviews should go to the paperback version site.

I have studied two years of German in college for my BS degree. My dad grew up in Nazi Germany. We were not the best of friends. Yet, this was a very fascinating book to me! I bought it because I figured that Hitler was a foreurunner of the Antichrist of the Bible and maybe this book would give me insight into his character. And it did. Yet I found some strange humor in it as well. Both my dad and one of my German professors had used the expression "he ought to be shot!" before as a reference to the frequent use of firing squads in the Third Reich. There is some of that gallows humor in there. Like a description of the quaiity built crematoriums for the death camps-made with the finsest of materials and German craftsmanship! My dad always was big on German craftsmanship and efficiency. I even found myself joking with my therapist about how cool it would be to become a dictator like Hitler where I could put all my enemies into concentarion camps, have them executed and have it filmed as the master had done!
I seemed to know more from that book about Hitler that my dad did. I discovered Hitler was a failed artist. My dad had tought he was a house painter. As my dad had terminal cancer and we visited once a month with him, we could talk about how he was living in Romania when Hitler invaded Russia and when they were repulsed that he and my aunt Margit had been evacuated out of Romania by Hitler. My dad was pretty tight-lipped about his childhood; yet this book actually gave us something to talk about befeore he died. What did we have in common? Quantum Theory? NOt! Bible Prophecy? NOt! We could discuss old "Uncle Adolph" as he had once called him!
So, I did see a twisted sort of humor to it. Just like on a News Radio Station from the Eastern US I had heard about a man who had a custom license plate in Virginia that said ZYKLON B on it. And how the state of Virginia had the plate revoked when they found out what it was. In Shirer's book, I discovered that ZYKLON B was the chemical that IG Farben had produced which Hitler used to carry out the "Final Solution" of the Jewish problem.
This book is jam packed with all kinds of trivia and interesting details. Just like I said, my dad grew up in Hitler Third Reich and did not know some ot these things!
There is an interesting lesson in this book in the life of Hitler. Hitler went to Vienna to study to be a painter. They rejected his application. So, he blamed this on the Jews and made it his ambition to erradicate them from the face of the earth-The Final Solution. Or in more modern times, I had seen on TV how the woman who had prayer banned from the public schools hadd been discriminated against in church; so she did not want to make her kids have to pray in school! Sometimes, discrimination comes back to haunt people!

Rolling Stone Interviews will strike magical chords in everyone. The book, edited with deep affection by Jann S. Wenner and Joe Levy, binds together reprinted interviews with famous people taken from Rolling Stone Magazines spanning nearly forty years. Starting with Pete Townsend of the Who in 1968 before the release of Tommy, and ending with U2's front man Bono in 2005, the interviews capture and frame a chunk of modern history in a truly unique fashion.

For those unfamiliar with the interviews of Rolling Stone, it's not just about music. Captured in raw form are the thoughts and feelings of directors like George Lucas after the release of the original smash hit Star Wars, and actors like Jack Nicholson after 1983's Best Picture Oscar went to Terms of Endearment. There are interviews with comedian Robin Williams, talk show hosts Johnny Carson and David Letterman, and writers like Tom Wolfe, all stand-out artists in their own right.

The most striking features of the book are the voices. It's rare in a non-fiction title to capture so much passion. John Lennon's interview in 1971 shortly after the breakup of the Beatles has more guttural honesty than a priest's confession. Kurt Cobain's 1994 interview captured shortly before his suicide lays out personal demons and screams for help. Bill Clinton's interview from 2000 breathes enough soul-searching sage advice to garner empathy from any hardened Republican. And there's more.

It must have been difficult to choose which interviews to include in the book. Of the multiple Eric Clapton interviews from various issues of the magazine, how could someone pick just one? Likewise, I'm not sure I would have voted for the Axl Rose saga to be included. But I'm thankful for what is there, all in one place.

Where else could you find the thoughts of the Dalai Lama just pages away from those of Ozzy Osbourne?

Armchair Interviews says: If you love music and the entertainment business-and strong stories and writing, this book is for you.

The presses of Rolling Stone magazine began to roll in San Francisco in the midst of a world-shaking consciousness-raising wake-up call centered around music, peace, and love. Many magazines published interviews, but The Rolling Stone Interview was definitive--in the interviewee's own words, unedited, uncensored, and whatever amount of space needed.

This book includes important interviews from 1967 to 1980 with some of the most great musicians of the time. Their words are as timeless as the music.

Ralph Gleason was a SF music columnist with an ear for great music from the jazz era to the emerging music of the mid 60s. Gleason joined with Rolling Stone Founder/Publisher Jann Wenner and contributed crucial reviews about the local bands and musicians. (Those columns alone would make an important book about the times.) Gleason did a Rolling Stone Interview with Bob Dylan in 1967. Dylan was interviewed again in 1969 by Wenner. The amazing 1972 Rolling Stone Interview with Jerry Garcia was a conversation with Wenner and Charles Reich.

The book is illustrated with photographs.

Great talk from the classic era, with great interviews with Led Zep, Dylan, Neil Young, Stones, Joni Mitchell and Billy Joel by writers Ralph Gleason, Jonathan Cott, Timothy White, Cameron Crowe, Bob Greenfield and more rock scribes. Neat time capsule.
