Great read, showcasing the latest fossils!Review Date: 2004-07-29
Valuable reference for academics and laymen alikeReview Date: 2004-09-05
Full of ecological and detailed anatomical descriptions of the key species in human evolution, this volume very rarely, if not uniquely, integrates the story of hominid anatomical adaptation and modification across the Miocene through to the Holocene.
Students of paleoanthropology will not find a more thorough one volume overview, which while going far beyond being an introduction, admirably serves that role to.
For those who want to come to grips with, at a very detailed level, the drivers and form of anatomical and associated behavioural change amongst the human ancestral species, this Cameron/Groves volume is the ideal reference.
Multiregionalism DebunkedReview Date: 2006-08-19
"Out of Africa" versus the "Multiregional" hypothesis are the book's main focus, and "Out of Africa" comes out the clear winner. David Cameron and Colin Groves each have their own slant on human origins, and these are clearly depicted in dozens of cladograms, each co-author posing variations. There are numerous sketches and photographs, and brief boxed interludes that also display a sense of humor.
"Bones, Stones and Molecules" introduces Groves' strong background in Australian fossils, the controversy over the timeline of Australian colonization has ramifications that affect much of anthropology. This is a solid book best suited to those with previous knowledge of the field. The appendix provides mathematical proof of assertions made in the book, hundreds of anatomical measurements are detailed. There are very few works that achieve such an excellent balance between mathematical rigor and literary readability.

My family immigrated to Cedarburg in 1856Review Date: 2004-06-02
All the facts were right, and the names were tight, and the sory was good because it was fun to read. There were funny stories, especially about the indian panic. I think you should buy it if you live here or used to live here.

This is great - the first history of West Hollywood!Review Date: 2004-04-03
The author showed how the railyard village of Sherman became a safe destination for Russian Jewish immigrants, homosexuals, and other dispossed or oppressed classes. West Hollywood gave us the world famous Sunset Strip - where the stars went shopping, dining, drinking, and gambling.
There is enough explanation to give a good idea of the history, for example how the Strip changed in the 70s with rock-n-roll.
He also fully explains how the city became a city after being county property for its whole history.
To arrange the photos so well and to tell the story to make some sense, well it was a easy pleasure to read.
i think Mr Gierach has a voice that needs to be heard, and I can't wait to see where his next book takes us.
Must-read 4 anyone interested in regional historyReview Date: 2003-07-24
Many local histories are written by archivists or presidents of historical associations - but this wonderful stone-faced city by a creek was trebly-blessed to have a professional writer do its history. The book, which at its beginning traces the geologic and environmental factors leading to the Native-American settlements there, also relates how and why German immigrants transplanted their own culture there. Finally, and regretably since the book was such a ripping good read that I didn't want the history to be over, Gierach tells the story of how the town faced down the modernization movement of the 1960s and 70s to propel itself into the 21st Century by preserving the legacy of the German founders of the town.
In the main, the book is a general history done chronologically and with a focus on the cultural history. Gierach avoids the mind-numbing lists of most municipal histories by telling the tales of the town's leading lights in a cultural context - and in the doing helped me better understand how German heritage shaped, in large part, middle-American values.
Cedarburg is a history-oriented town, and it should be very very happy that Gierach did such a bang-up job on their history.
I can't wait until his second title is ready - I'll check Amazon frequently for his name.

A Must Read for Adoptive Parents and Adult AdopteesReview Date: 2003-10-15
Exquisitely written! Garrotto eloquently conveys Natalia's feelings of forgiveness, love, desire and inner strength.
In reading Circles of Stone I found myself living Natalia's journey to Peru. Throughout the book she is faced with important decisions that could destroy her relationship with her parents, fiancée, and her birth mother. From the time she visits El Retiro de Cristo Rey in Sedona to her decision to go to Peru, it is easy to feel Natalia's disenchantment in discovering her personal adoption story and the ultimate discovery of her true spirit.
A great book is one that stays fresh in your mind for many years. It is one that is read and reread, and with each reading something new will be discovered. Circles of Stone is of this caliber--a novel that will touch the lives of all who read it.
As director of an international adoption agency I consider Circles of Stone a "must read" for adoptive families, adult adoptees--anyone who wishes to read a great novel!

Concious Coaching: Your Soccer Kids Will Love You for It.Review Date: 2001-01-11
Whether you are a parent, coach or teacher, this book will "coach" you to discern what works in your relationship with others (coach, child and parent) so that you can continue to reinforce those attributes that are positive. Most importantly though, it will guide you to recognize and shape your own behavior within those unfolding dynamics to effect desired outcomes and achieve empowering results.
Having said as little, it should be noted also that Conscious Coaching is a quick read; you will love it for its clarity, as much as for its wisdom.
