Rudi and The Green Apple is a must-read for anyone truly interested in using the teachings of yoga for spiritual growth. While the stories it shares are told in an easy, conversational style, what it transmits is profound. The book itself helps us gaze into the life of an incredible yogi and partake of some of his depth and power through the eyes of a young student. This kind of guru-disciple relationship is not common in our society but as this book reveals, it can give us the tools for transformation so many of us seek. This is a book I will return to many times as I try to understand in my own life how the spiritual path of yoga truly works.

This beautiful book gives the reader a taste of the special relationship that exsists between a guru and disciple. In this heart touching story Faith paints a vivid picture of her teacher, Rudi. His personality, teachings, and enthusiastic love for people is clearly conveyed for the reader. It is easy to feel a great affection for this man too!

Faith tells the story of how this special person came into her life and tranformed her world, and her view herself. There are really nice pictures and illustrations as well as a recipe that adds nicely to the book. A wonderful, inspiring story!

This book inspired me to dig deeper into my own soul. I laughed, I cried, my heart broke open as I read. Faith Stone, with word snapshots, shows us the life and teachings of a unique and extraordinary American Yogi, Swami Rudrananda. She writes honestly, simply, and with depth about her experiences while studying with him and about how she has applied what she learned to her own life. This is not a meditation manual. Rather, it is a juicy, zesty, deliciously dramatic adventure into realms of consciousness that one might think are not attainable for the ordinary person.....BUT...Read this book and think again! Beautiful layout and illustrations harmonize perfectly with the text.

It is a rare privilege to read this beautifully designed and sweetly written book about the even more rare privilege of being the student of a Siddah Yogi in the U.S. Author Faith Stone writes from her heart about her almost unbelievable experiences as the student of Swami Rudrananda. In the process she manages to convey a good overview and very down-to-earth explanation of Rudi's teachings. The book is filled with love, spiritual wisdom and beautiful art work. A very moving book--not to be missed by spiritual seekers! It is truly a precious gift.

This book, although written a decade ago, is an insider's prescient account of how Hamas was born on the West Bank and why. It also is a terrific read, with true literary quality. Almost like a novel. And enlightening for policymakers and anyone else trying to understand the fundamentals of the Middle East.

A must have cookbook

The best cookbook I've ever owned.
Just like the other reviews say, recipes are easily laid out, simple, and ingredients are easy to get; or you may have them in your pantry already.
Plus,it's got a little of everything-not just indian recipes...something from each region,and appetizers,breakfasts,etc.

You could easily add meat to the recipes if you are not vegetarian. But definitely get this book-you will not be disappointed. My dad copied the recipe for Morrocan stew and added meat to his.

I have given this book countless times,as a gift. It's just beautiful.
If you are a seasoned cook, you will find inspiration and appreciate the simple elegance of the recipes.
If you are trying to increase your kitchen know-how,you will find this book accessible and do-able. If you have children, they will likely enjoy many of these recipes. My child does!
Get this book,and enjoy!

This is the best cookbook I have ever owned!!!

I own about 45 Vegan and Vegetarian cookbooks and this one is the best! Head and shoulders above the rest. It's recipes are easy to make. They are also incredibly delicious and nutritious! No need to sacrifice taste for good health when you have this gem in your library. The Indian breakfast cereal is now a staple in our house. If you don't own this book do yourself a favor and purchase it. You won't be sorry!

Of all the vegetarian cookbooks I've come across, this one is among the best. I've tried other cookbooks such as Moosewood and was never satisfied. This book actually has entrees that aren't just a collection of Middle Eastern dishes. They are original, yet simple and easy to follow and don't require a trip to specialty stores for that one ingredient you've never heard of. The dishes that I've prepared from this book have been enjoyed by vegetarians and meat-eaters alike, so if you're family is divided on such issues, have no fear.

Not a single bad recipe in the book!

This book is a comprehensive survey of all topics related to becoming a lawyer in Canada. It provides information that will assist you from your first thoughts of wanting to attend law school up to the day you are finally called to the bar, as well as web links and names of other books that may be of assistance. It is honest and thorough and I would recommend it for anyone who is considering law school, on the path to law school or already in law school. This book is a fresh account of everything law school related that does not deceive, patronize or beat around the bush. The author uses his own experiences and that of his colleagues to provide helpful examples and problem solving techniques. It is evident to me, in reading this book, that the author is selflessly committed to providing the most accurate, up-to-date and constructive advise to Canada's future law community. Mr. Letourneau's out-of-the-box thinking and open personality wonderfully complement this books unique style. [...]

Applying to and attending law school in Canada can be a challenging process. Unlike the many books that focus on the experience in the US, this book specifically looks at the Canadian system. 'So, You Want to Be a Lawyer, Eh?' outlines the process and offers tips to improve your results in the application process, at law school and in finding an articling position. I will be attending law school next year and I am confident that this book will help me succeed.

I highly recommend anyone considering a career in law in Canada to read this book!

As a future Canadian law student, I was frustrated with the lack of guide material available to Canadian law students. All of the material I was able to find was aimed toward American students. Since there are some differences between the way the two countries educate their lawyers, it was important to find a book like this that addresses the particular elements of Canadian Law School.

I highly recommend this to anyone contemplating law school in Canada.

The book is an absolute must-read for those considering pursuing a career in the law. A number of books address the topic in the U.S. context; however, this is the first book I have encountered that thoroughly addresses: (1) Canadian law school life, (2) tips that will help one land the articling position of their choice; and (3) work as an articling student and junior lawyer in Canada.

The book is very comprehensive, well-written, and well-researched.

This book proved to be a good reference material that is written in laymen terms and formatted in an easy to follow chronological order taking you from the application process to the law school experience to seeking out law firms for articling.

The author, an articling law student, has taken the time to explain what potential law students should consider when seeking a career in this field.

This book also provides reference to several websites that will be useful in preparing one for the LSAT to selecting a law school to financing your education.

I definitely recommend this book as a planning tool for highschool/university students and mature adults considering a career in this field.

This book wonderfully brings alive a beautiful story and individual. I felt myself enthralled by the story of Amalia's journey, and in the experience I felt my own relationship to the earth deepen. A lively account of one person's journey into deep connection with herself and the earth, I could not help but feel my own connections evolving and deepening as well. The narrative is engaging, descriptive and flowing in substance and style. Amalia writing plays with the subtle balance of fun and enjoyable reading with a thoughtful and contemplative content. It was a true pleasure to read.

Amalia is truly genuine. While in Sedona I had a shamanic session with

Since then, I have read her book. She sincerely shares her spiritual journey with the reader. I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend this book, especially if you have a strong connection to Mother Earth.

Amalia was the guest speaker at a meeting I attended and, loving to commune with nature and Mother Earth myself, found her very interesting. I purchased a copy of her "Spirit of the Stones". The book was fascinating. I could put it down only momentarily for the essentials and also to pause to reflect and contemplate the messages Amalia received. Her story is captivating and told with honesty, sincerity and openness. "Spirit of the Stones" breaks new ground and provides thought provoking ideas and messages. A 'must read'.

A Shaman For Our Time

Review Date: 2007-07-24
A shaman for our time, Amalia is the real deal. In the tradition of Dan Millman's "Way of the Peaceful Warrior", Amalia digs down deep for the courage to live the experiences leading to shamanic wisdom. In her true story of a woman's unique personal journey of self discovery, Amalia sacrifices all to answer a call from Mother Earth. Giving up her home, her husband and her successful naturopathic career in Australia, she travels to many unusual locations on the planet where Earth's energy is uniquely manifested in massive stone formations. There, Amalia uncovers her special power to retrieve ancient knowledge held in the stones over the millennia. Amalia's story is fascinating and grounding. As Earth's consciousness ascends during these next few critical years, Amalia will probably be in the middle of the fray leading many of us in her shamanic dance pounding out much needed healing messages from Mother Earth. I could not put this book down.

I've loved Katherine Kerr's Deverrey universe for many years, and I was particularly heartened with what she began in this latest series. The second book can often be the weakest in a trilogy, but this one manages to avoid all the traps. In fact, it's better than The Gold Falcon, in part because Kerr includes a long past-life flashback that really illuminates the current story. I've always liked how Kerr's characters have to work out their wyrd over time... and how the decisions they make in this lifetime affect the ones to follow.

If you haven't read the series before, don't try to start with this one. But if you've read even the first trilogy, you'll want to get into this Silver Wyrm collection.

I waited breathlessly for Katherine Kerr to write this book. I read it doing everything, cooking, laying in bed, waiting in the car...it was well worth it.

I am now waiting breathlessly for the conclusion to find out what happened to the other characters who were NOT mentioned in this book. There are a few things she needs to put to bed to finish the series. Then I will read it over and over again and again.

Although I enjoyed Gold Falcon, I was disappointed at its lack of a past life section. Spirit Stone suffers no such lack, and indeed fills in a missing section most satisfactorily. Without wishing to give anything away, this book also expands the action to include the perspective of two unanticipated characters, and arrives at its planned destination with many engrossing detours. Some may gripe at the relative lack of Neb and Branna in this book, but I found it heartening that they don't simply suddenly turn into super magicians over night and solve all the problems, and their story is charmingly told. Can't wait for the final volume in this saga.

Some of the Horsekin have civilized themselves and settled in cities but that hasn't abated their thirst for war. They need more lands for their heavy horses to have more pastures and they believe their goddess wants them to have it. The dwarves, the elves and the humans of Deverry are planning to attack Zakh Grel, the fortress they built to stage their battles from. As the men make ready to go to battle, people from 983, over one hundred years ago who have been reincarnated in the present all have a role to play.

Nevyn the herbmaster was a powerful wielder of Dweomer (magic) found the woman he and then her lost to a magic wielder's poor judgment. In the present he is known as Neb a scribe married to the Lady Bronna once known as Morwen. Both possess Dweomer and are ready to defend the borders. Friends and enemies from 983 are all alive in the present and have a role to play in the upcoming war. In the past Gwairyc was a lord who looked down on commoners but in the present he had to earn his lordship and is a great leader of men. Lez Maj, an outlaw in the present was a pedophile in another past incarnation while Mella, now Sidro, an ex-priestess who is Laz's lover. Maj's lover is fascinated by the black and obsidian pyramid made with magic in 983. As the forces of good and evil begin to march, nobody knows what the outcome will be, not even the seers.

The latest Deverry novel contains an epic high fantasy plot that is absolutely spellbinding. The tale is divided into two parts, 983 and the present and the various players who have reincarnated in the present are believable characters taking their personalities from one era and transforming them into something else in this incarnation. Filled with wondrous creatures like talking dragons who are allied against the Horsekin speaking animals and heroes who will fight and die for a cause they believe is just, THE SPIRIT STONES is a wonderful and exciting tale.

Dr. Drury has produced a much needed lay-person's exposition of Earth science - Bravo! To paraphrase his words, this book provides the complete story which is sketched out in several contemporary works dealing with life sciences and origins.
On the down-side, the reader is forced to read the authors' (short but frequent) political commentary peppered throughout the work. Marx, Engels, Lenin and other economic/political writers are quoted throughout. In most cases, the quotes are forced and read as though they were inserted in spite of the otherwise wonderful text.

Drury has done for geology and the evolution of Earth and life what Carl Sagan did for the cosmos. In Stepping Stones you can see how chemistry, physics and biology combine with the evidence from rocks, and begin to understand the highly complex and extremely long past from which our own evolution has sprung. Heady stuff, but surprisingly easy to read.

This is one of the best books out of the hundreds I've read on astronomy, earth science and biology. This is the rare book that weaves together these disciplines. If you read one book on how our planet got to where it is, and where it's going, this is the one.

I just finished it. It was a really great book. It is somewhat technical, as of course is must be, without going over the top.

But not being trained in neither geology, chemistry or biology it was slow work on my part. 5-10 pages max. per sitting. Too much info to digest.

But well worth the effort.

For years I have been interested in geology and the evolution of life, but have rarely found any general book aimed at the non-specialist. Stepping Stones breaks completely from the single-topic approach and takes on probably the broadest scope of any book I have read - the entire evolution of our home planet, the life upon it and our own emergence from a history of quiet change interspersed with unimaginably violent events over almost 5 billion years. It links geology through physics, chemistry and biology to astronomical factors. Forget the Whole Earth Cookbook; Stepping Stones tells our story. Like all good reads, it contains a sting in the tail and blends fact, theory, speculation and some wry humour. I can't say that it is an easy read, but truly found it hard to put down. What I particularly like about it is the way that the author has divided the text into more than 20 chapters, each of which is almost self-contained and possible to read in an evening. I don't know how he did it, but the huge amount of content links together wonderfully. My favourite passage - where he jokingly links our irritating cough reflex to the survivors of a volcanic holocaust 25 million years ago when the atmosphere was thick with noxious fumes, and 90 percent of all life perished. Every living thing today descends from those survivors, and I laughed to think we may owe our being to the plague of concert halls. What I learned most - how humans evolved through a repeated sequence of huge climate and environmental shifts, which helped hone our ancestors survival skills, and generally how evolution is as much a product of outlandish chance as it is of slow change governed by genes pitted against surroundings. If I were younger, I would enroll for a geology course, and would feel confident that I could master any specialist detail thrown at me, now that I have grasped the fullest possible context from Stepping Stones!

There are detailed accounts of travelling to many stone circles around the world - new and old, with even chapters on how to build a stone circle and the alignments.

I can hardly wait to start laying out my own little "stone henge" and with this book I now know how! I always wondered how they did it, now thanks to Rob Roy, not only do I know how they did it, but now I know how I can do it too! Rob provides history, lore, safety tips, labor saving "secrets" of the ancients, great anecdotes and practical and technical instruction on site selection and preparation, stone selection and preparation, constuction of safe and durable megalithic structures, and even a human and spiritual side of the subject that can be quite energizing. With this book anyone can find their own connection to our ancient ancestors! In addition to all the information provided, this book also harbors some very phenominal photographs of both ancient and modern megalithic structures around the world. If you buy only one book this year, buy this one...if your disapointed then you have no soul!

Rob Roy's book, Stone Circles, is perhaps the most comprehensive and masterful work on the topic of stone circles by a living author today. There is much more to megalithic stone circles than just the movement and placement of massive dormant objects. When properly placed, they become permanent monuments to a timeless spiritual perspective. Considering our fragile and tenuous hold on life, we humans, especially in modern times, would do well to learn about and understand these marvels of engineering, determination, and dedication. Rob Roy's book gives us all a good place to start.

Years from now, when I'm asked what books impacted my life in major ways, I'm sure I'll immediately list "Stone Circles" as one of them. This is partly because the book came along at a time when I was developing an interest in standing stones and sacred places but mostly because it treats megalithic architecture as a living art: not just a phenomenon from the past to be studied, but a way to connect, as the ancients did, with the earth and with the cycles all around us. This book truly is a "modern builder's guide to the megalithic revival." It speaks of ancient standing stones at Stonehenge, Avebury, the Orkneys, and other sites, but concentrates primarily on contemporary stone circle builders and on practical information for doing this ourselves! It's filled with incredible photos and the stories of contemporary megalithic architects and builders, as well as a wealth of technical information. Thank you, Rob Roy, and thanks to all of your colleagues for lighting a flame in me - before, I had an interest in megalithic architecture, now I am an (amateur) "megalithic anthropologist." That means that I have an interest in the study and application of how human culture and big stones interact - not just in the context of the past, but here and now. I have a small circle of stones on a shelf at home that I rearrange, am going to build some temporary circles at the beach in a couple of weeks, and I can hardly wait to go to work in the back yard this summer! This is a great personal reference. There is not much that I can add to prior superlative reviews. BUT for this five volume set (please note the actual physical dimensions of the books) one needs a magnifying glass to read the text. Even with my reading glasses on 2.5's it was too hard....

Great edition; regretfully the small print makes it somewhat frustrating to enjoy.

A must have for those who want to learn about HaShem

Since the giving of Torah at Mount Sinai, it remains the most sacred words of G-d. The commentaries included on the Torah are excellent. Just as you must use "salt" when reading anyone's commentaries, you must apply salt to these as well. If you have never been exposed to Jewish traditions, the commentaries will give you an insight to how the Jews interpret the Word and put it into practice. May HaShem bless you as you read His word.

Handsome edition, with lucid contemporary translation. This is fast becoming the most popular English-language Chumash for synagogue and home use, and it's easy to see why.

With illustrations, cross-references, and haftorahs included in this nicely-bound single volume, it's a thrill to see a work of this quality available from Amazon.com.

This makes a fine bar/bat mitzvah gift, as it's an essential addition to any Jewish home (even one that has a chumash/Bible already).

I'm sure this is the best book written by Mingfong Ho yet. Some of her earlier novels like The Clay Marble are a bit creaky but this novel doesn't have a false note in it! The story involves a girl who is caught up in the Khmer Rouge evacuation of Cambodia and is sent to work in a camp in the rural areas. Some members of her family die while others survive. Mingfong Ho worked in the refugee camps in Thailand for Cambodians and speaks Thai as well as Chinese and English. She witnessed the lives of the Khmer people in refugee camps and heard their stories. This all comes alive in the book and makes the story much more realistic than some other novels about the Khmer Rouge time. She has also grown as a writer and communicate her story in a clear, descriptive manner. There is no doubt that she is now a terrific children's novelist.

I thought this was autobiographical because it seemend so real. The turmoil of Cambodia and the family's escape from their were so terrifying.

As a middle school teacher, I found this book wonderful. Although it deals with issues some younger students may struggle with, I plan to use it in my 8th grade classroom. The story is told from first person, the voice of a 12 year old Cambodian girl. It takes place in the 60's and therefore deals with Vietnam war and that time frame. The main character experiences some severe traumas, but makes it through them all stronger and more mature. A wonderful book for young adolescents and a quick read for adults!

Better than others we read, rang true

We bought Stone Goddess in preparation for a trip to Cambodia with our children. The older ones (10 and 12) read this book along with two others that tell similar stories (Little Brother, and Chantrea Conway's Journey to America). Stone Goddess was BY FAR the best-written of the three - Ho's prose is spare but emotionally rich, and her descriptions certainly rang true with what we saw in Cambodia. We visited Angkor, and the scenes in the book that were set there helped prepare us for what we would be seeing.

The plotline was also the most believable of the three books, and I found the latter section of the book, when Nakri has come to America and is trying to adjust, very poignant and true to the 20th century immigrant experience.

I would highly recommend this book for tweens and up - it's on the short side, but even adults will find it moving. If you were planning a trip to Cambodia with kids, I would say it's a must-read.

I enjoyed the Stone Goddess, by Mingfong Ho. This book is great for pre-teens and teens who are interested in first person fiction. It is a book based on the late 60's and the ending of the Vietnam War. It shows the struggle and trauma that one girl named Narki goes through to become free as she once was, before the war. Even though the book is fiction, it has very true messages for growing up and not taking freedom for granted.

Narki, is a young Cambodian girl, her sister Teeda, and her brother Boran, are separated from their family during the Vietnam War. They all struggle to survive in labor camps where they are not treated with any kindness. They are made to work in rice fields. They are withdrawn from their Buddhists beliefs and they are forced to become part of the Angkor, which is the belief of the people who captured them. It shows how strong they were to survive for four years in the labor camps. It shows how being away from your family doesn't keep you from believing that one day you will re-joined with them.

All in all, The Stone Goddess is an enjoyable book. It unlocks doors that show the adventure of surviving in an unfamiliar place. It shows, even if your dreams are crushed, you just need to believe and everything seems possible as it once did before. This book represents adventure, dreams, trauma, and struggle. And it shows that all of it makes you a stronger person.
