A MUSICAL THEATRE FANS' MUST HAVE BOOK
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-04
This massive volume showcases just about every production to hit the Broadway stage in the last sixty years-each production has a brief synopsis of plot-tryout problems-backstage squabbles-cast listings-musical numbers used in each production and even songs deleted before the shows' opening-the length of the run and profit or loss-and every show that has had mutiple revivals-the info on the revival or revivals follows the original production section. This is not a book that can be read in a short period of time but is so well presented the reader can always pick it up turn to any page and find some wonderful tidbit. the only drawbacks is the bulky gargantuan size of the book, the gargantuan price,no photos and the teeny-weeny print. but then if the print was larger you would probably need a fork-lift to carry the book-forget the size-forget the price- forgive the lack of photos-this book is a must.

Pre-Enron Integrity

I loved this book because it had soul, heart and wisdom. Sam Bronfman was an immigrant that took advatage of what NA and in this case Canada had to offer. From selling frozen fish and firewood he "made" one of the largest corporations in the world and had fun doing it. "It's not the money, he said, it's the making of the money". The game, the fun. "The best thing ever invented is compound interest. You make money while you sleep".
It is great reading. Americans might have some problems with the British and Canadian references but ignore them or look up the appedndices that are quite complete. A throwback to the likes of Mellon, Carnegie and Heinz. When a deal was made by men that cared about other people.

Impressive with good BC History!

I found the book to be well written. The history of BC and furthermore Nanaimo and Canada's false prophet "Brother XII" really opened my eyes. As a person who has lived in Nanaimo for all of my 17 years I had never heard of Brother XII before. The information in this book and references to Nanaimo and the surrounding area was wonderful. To think such a spiritual scam occurred right on Nanaimo's back door was amazing! My hat real goes off to Mr. Oliphant who researched many of the people who lived in town, in Vancouver, and in many other places affected by the Brother. I will definitely read it again, and I recommend anyone interested in BC or Vancouver Island history also read this book as it is an invaluable chapter to our past!

great cut out bugs with a variety of uses

One of several books in the Waltons' paper chains series, this one is by far the most elaborate. The bugs come out realistically and beautifully; they make great decorations for greeting cards or can even act as self-contained cards. The book comes with ideas on how to use the cut-outs and with sheets of colorfully patterned, high quality paper (unfortunately, there is no way to acquire more of this paper; it isn't sold independently of the books). As an adult, I love this book, but it seems like cutting the numerous skinny bug legs would quickly become tedious for all but the most dedicated junior craftsperson. Some of the Waltons' other paper chains books might be better choices for kids.

Thomas Bulfinch retells the classical myths for the masses
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-02
"The intelligible forms of ancient poets,
The fair humanities of old religion,
The Power, the Beauty, and the Majesty
That had their haunts in dale or piny mountain,
Or forest, by slow stream, or pebbly spring,
Or chasms and watery depths; all these have vanished;
They live no longer in the faith of reason;
But still the heart doth need a language; still
Doth the old instinct bring back the old names;
Spirits or gods that used to share this earth
With man as with their friend; and at this day
'Tis Jupiter who brings whate'er is great,
And Venus who brings every thing that's fair."

At the end of his Author's Preface for "Bulfinch's Greek and Roman Mythology: The Age of Fable," Thomas Bulfinch (1796-1867) quotes from Coleridge's "The Piccolomini" to represent the connection between mythology and literature. An accountant at the Boston Merchants' Bank, Bulfinch had been educated at Harvard and was a teacher early in his career. Seeing a need for something more than a formal translation of the myths and legends of antiquity, Bulfinch decided to popularize classical literature for all of us who did not know how to read Ancient Greek and Latin. Throughout his business career he collected hundreds of myths and legends, not only of the pagan era of Greek and Roman gods, but also Oriental deities, and Norse sagas. "The Age of Fable" was first published in 1855, and created the identification of the name of Bulfinch with that of mythology for the general population. For the last half of the 19th-century and the first part of the 20th, the volume was as much an American classic as "The Last of the Mohicans," "Uncle Tom's Cabin," "Uncle Remus," "Tom Sawyer," and "Huckleberry Finn."

When Bulfinch told these ancient tales the archeological study of Greece had not really begun (Troy was still considered a mythical location) and historians had yet to formulate any acceptable explanations for how these myths originated. Bulfinch was interested in telling these stories simply and for their own sakes, without being caught up in the Dead Language issues of the poems he excerpts (except to the extent that he uses the Latin versions of the names of the gods and goddesses rather than the Greek). Nor was he interested in drawing moral lessons from these stories, because Bulfinch's goal was to make the classical references found in the educated poets of his day accessible to the common folk.

The opening chapters deal mostly with the gods and goddesses, starting with the tales of Prometheus and Pandora, and ending with the "Monsters" such as the Sphinx and Pegasus. The next section is devoted to the great heroes, from Jason and Atalanta, to Hercules and Theseus, and then the lesser heroes such as Orpheus and orion. We then get to the epic poems of antiquity with chapters on the Trojan war, the adventures of Ulysses, and the adventures of Aeneas. The final section of "The Age of Fable" covers a lot of ground, including Egyptian deities, the Oracles, Poets of Mythology, Eastern Mythology, Hindu Mythology, and Norse Mythology, including Beowulf. I was weaned on Edith Hamilton's "Mythology," but I still appreciate Bulfinch's approach in telling pretty much the same stories in a more straightforward manner. More importantly, these stories have really become literature in their own right, and can be read for that enjoyment rather than for scholarly knowledge. This edition has the additional virtue of being illustrated by some of the world's greatest paintings, which is perfect because mythology has been the subject of so many great works of art from "The Birth of Venus" on down the list.

Illuminates the dark and shaky paths connecting science, poetry and life
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-13
In Bushido: The Virtues of Rei and Makoto, scientist and poet Art Stewart attempts something very new. He uses poetry to show the connections between real life, science, philosophy and human responsibility to the planet and each other. Obviously this book is difficult to summarize because of its wide and deep scope, but the author actually makes it all come together in a profoundly simple and yet important way. Imagine traces of William Carlos Williams and John Updike as well as Albert Einstein with a soundtrack by the Indigo Girls and Dave Matthews Band.

Artfully, the poems are all related in their focus on Bushido (the way of the samurai) and most use first-person perspective as one feels that Stewart, with his Peace Corps work, his scientific research and his high school and college teaching experience, has earned the right to be an instructor of modern values and responses to an ever-changing world. Using the concepts of Rei (or respect) and Makoto (truth and sincerity), the author addresses issues from stem cell research to pollution to global warming to overpopulation to teaching evolution in schools.

In "Ghanaian Story", an African man struggles to chop down rainforest to feed his family in what some would say a short-sighted and wasteful display, yet at the same time the African shows respect for life in other ways. The author implies the "if only" present in the African's contradictory behavior.

Most of the poems are seemingly stream-of-consciousness, yet closer inspection reveals their profundity and purpose. Stewart's scientific knowledge is evident, and deftly does he leap from scientific detail and obscurity to common, emotional, raw truth of experience and human intimacy. I gladly recommend this book to anyone interested in the interplay between science, emotion and life.
