GREAT unknown book on deductive reasoning
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-07
I came across thsi sleeper at the Library. I had never seen it recommended by any Bridge players or book lists. I figured it would be some outdated crap and I'd skim it and return it the next day.

Fortunately I was greatly mistaken.

1. The book has 90 generally very good to excelelnt problems.

2. The problems test various aspects of deductive reasoning such as:
a - placing cards based on missing HCP
b - drawing inferences about the hand shapes based on the bidding
c - counting out the hand
d - drawing inferences from discards

3. the problems also test your declarer play technique. How to play a suit, safety plays, how to protect against a bad lie of the cards, timing, trump control.

4. Table presence / putting yourself into your opponents shoes. Asking yourself "What do the opponents know about my hand" or "why did they do that"

Its a great unknown book, highly recommended.

An Urban Poet: Short But Interesting
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-10
I was looking for books by Ezra Pound at a small bookstore on Bloor in Toronto, in the Annex, and by chance was introduced to a young poet named Paul Vermeersch. Poetry is no longer the center of literary excitement and the young poet had some time to spare.

After a chat he mentioned a few books of poetry that he like including Dylan Thomas "Collected Poems" and a similar book by Wallace Stevens. Also, he showed me some of his own books, and in particular the present book "Between the Walls."

This is a short collection of his poems. It is a slim 80 plus pages. The topics are mostly abstract and urban, but not entirely. He has for example is a poem on the "Embrace of the Sea."

He divides the poems into three groups:

- "Garbage Day,"
- "As Fields Become Birds Become Clouds," and
- "As Is."

It is hard to generalize because the poets are a mixture if impressions and subjects and feelings mostly set in Ontario. There are a number of urban settings and subjects but also he returns to his home town, and elsewhere he has poems about animals, orchards, toads, and primetime.

It is an entertaining collection of poems, which has a certain freshness. I liked "As It Is On the Edge Of Town" which is about children playing among cast-off refrigerators. The poet and his writings are caught up some where between his home town in Brights Grove on the southern shores of Lake Huron and urban Toronto on Lake Ontario.

Makes me Enjoy Reading

I think as an adult we have the tendency to let some things go due to busy schedules, or think we must read the hodge-podge things to be considered and adult.

I came across the Edge Chronicles in a local book store. I have a 9-year-old and tried to convince her to want the book, so I'd have an excuse to read it. She opted against it. I waited a week and went back to buy the book, while looking for the second book of another series.

I was immediately drawn in.

The main character Twig knows he's different, and he finally finds out why towards the beginning of the book. His mother sends him to a relatives for safety, and well...the adventure begins there.

I love the descriptions of the characters, and the places. Some are red, some are just weird and foul with foul intentions. Others are strange-looking yet turn out to be very helpful to Twig in his journey when he strays off the path. The pictures help to add just enough to the imagination, especially when a verbal description has you thinking it may look a certain way. But who says the pictures are exactly right ;-).

I spend my time reading while commuting to work - so I am already on book two and bought through book 7. Looks like I will need to order book 8 & 9, shortly.

If you have a child (outside of or inside of you) who likes the Star Wars Adventures, the Chronicles of Narnia adventures, mixed with a bit Harry Potter and Lemony Snickets' mysticism and weirdness (not that Star Wars and Battle Star Galactica didn't have enough strange looking creatures in certain scenes). I'd say this is the series for you.

Book Two continues the adventures of Twig ... and of course more characters and 'things' to go through and do.

As someone who has worked for many years in both education and mental health, it is refreshing to find a resource that finally bridges the two. I have used this book as a resource for all of my staff. We find it extremely helpful in redefining our perspectives of the population we serve.

A great resource

The information doesn't seem to mention that there is a CD of bird sounds. It's very cool!

I used this book before a 7th grade field trip to a wildlife refuge. I put pictures of the birds (from the Internet) into a PowerPoint presentation and added the bird sounds from this disk. We listened to the sounds and made notes about what each bird looked like and sounded like. When we went to the refuge, the students could identify wigeons, grebes, and wood ducks. Waterfowl don't just quack.

I also liked listening to the songbirds and using the sounds to identify the little birds that hard to see in the bushes. If you enjoy figuring out what's in your yard or your neighborhood, you'll enjoy having this CD and book combination.

Bitterbloom - a popular work of moving fiction
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-26
Georgia Beaumont in 24 when she boards a ship for Australia. Behind her is South Africa, her homeland she loves but can no longer endure.

Bitterbloom tells the story of the delicate balance between escape and feelings of guilt and loss; of Georgia's shattering relationships with two men who come close to destroying her. In a passionate and often devastating emotional journey, Georgia must come to terms with her past to find peace in a new and hostile land. Alison Stewart brings a new sense of the pain of loss and the joy of re-discovery as she charts a course form confusion and dislocation to peace with the clarity and force only personal experience can afford. Bitterbloom introduces a brilliant and established Australian writer to the world.

I give this extraodinary novel a 5 out of 5 and wish this talented and popular writer good luck in the future.

This book was written by the incredible Stewart Coffin, his magnificent stories of canoeing and portage from years gone by in the remote areas of Canada and the United States really are astounding. I read the book from cover to cover, absolutely refusing to put it down for even a second.
Stewart's lifelong adventures are not only great reading, but the tales make you seem like your right there along with him in the canoe! If you've ever wondered what its like to travel into the vast areas of untouched forests, stream, and lakes then you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of this magnificent book!!

A Great Read for Teen Men
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-14
Parents of boys interested in sports and thinking manliness and Godliness don't mix, owe it to their sons to introduce them to the life of Pier Giorgio Frassati. Though a continent and a century removed, Pier Giorgio shared the same idealism, problems and interests as our own young people. His teenage years were interupted by World War I; his parents didn't understand him; he struggled with his studies. He loved to climb and ski and hike the mountains of Italy and sports were his passion. But his greater passions were the love of God as expressed in his daily attendance at Mass and all-night Adoration, and his special love of, and personal sacrifices for, the poor. At his death, at the age of 24, he was personally, finacially responsible for 120 poor families. No wonder, Pope John Paul II called him the "Man of the Beatitudes". His life is an incredible read for any young man.
