Refreshing for the Seventies!

Dr. Stewart rivets our attention to what real writing is all about: writing through the voice of the author. With the onset of social construction theory, Stewart's message may have become passe for some, but for those of us who too often were forced to write within the guidelines of five paragraph essays, Stewart taps the wellsprings of creativity itself. While other more recent textbooks may expound more eloquently on the writing and rewriting process (or "vision and revision" as Donald Murray calls it), the fact is that Stewart's book is, historically, one of the very first to tackle the subject of writing from a student's point of view. His democratic approach gives his readers credit for the ability to be creative in their own right. The teacher's role? To get out of the way of their students' writing

Great story for dog loving kids!

This is a very cute picture book for young kids, relating a true life shipwreck off the coast of Nantucket in 1877. One of the survivors of the wreck was a black Newfoundland Retriever, and this is his story. It's a perfect story for doggie-loving little ones, and even includes a bit of information as to how such a rescue would have taken place in the late 19th Century. The pictures are as bright and attractive as the text. One more title from top flight author Whitney Stewart!

A Classic

Since this is a children's book I'll keep it clean. Actually a classic, this is a dekliberately corny cash grab by the original sell out Martin Luther. A children's book advertised as serrious yoga. O.k., but the artwork should've been a lot better and marketed at adults. The poem itself isw a timeless masterpiece about the birth of Jesus, illustrated. If sung aloud, can be very serious and powerful yoga. My niece has a lot of children's books and my mom gets them they're not more than 5 dollars, but come on it's the reading equivalent of drinking corn syrup. Fix the artwork for adults please. Says this reviewer. I'm getting a copy for my two nieces for Christmas this year and got one for myself and will get one for my best friend and grandmother as well. This might be worth money some day.

This has to be my 9 month old daughter's favorite book. She especially loves the illustrations. We love to read it to her at bedtime. It is a sweet story about how precious children are and how we should enjoy being parents. I can't wait to get more books by this same author.

I have a 5 year old child and am now 7 months pregnant with my second child, I discovered things in this books that i went thru in my first pregnancy and that i had no idea of the purposes of it, this book explains everything in details and i'm able to understand more of what is going on inside of my body, i feel that after reading this book i'm ready for anything that comes and has to do with parenthood, I wish i would've read this book when i was pregnant with my first child it would've definitely helped me a lot, i recommend this book, for every woman that is expecting, is planning on having a child or already has a child, because this books helps with all three stages...

This book was first published by Hurtig in 1984, and is the copy that I am reviewing. I'm sure much has had to be changed by Brown in order to make the book accessable, as much development has, unfortunately, occurred in Ontario over the past twenty years.

The book consists of 24 excursions through Ontario's beautiful countryside. Ontario has numerous natural wonders, quaint small towns, and historical landmarks--all of which are within a few hours drive.

For those unable to undertake the excursions, or who have no inclination to go polluting through them, will still enjoy this book immensely, as I have. Ron Brown is an excellent writer, and describes each excursion with clarity and the right balance of information and anecdote.

best bamboo book out of print!???

Bamboo World is one of the very best , most comprehensive, most
detailed , best photographed, authoritative texts on bamboos
and clumping bamboos especially that there is (was!) available.
Why the heck it would now be out of print is a real mystery.
It is also a pity and a blow to those of us cultivating
clumping bamboos.
This book is IT for those who do.
Bring it back into print ASAP....
please ;^)

One of the best books from the Dear Canada series.

Twelve-year-old Angelique Richard has lived her whole life on her family's farm in Grand-Pre, Acadia, as part of a large, loving family. But the year is 1755, and life for everyone in Acadia is about to change forever. The British government has been imposing more and more restrictions on the Acadian people, due to the war with the French. Although the Acadians wish to remain neutral, the British refuse to trust them. Angelique's father and many of the other men are thrown in jail for signing a petition in protest of this unfair treatment, and even worse is to come for the people of Grand-Pre. Angelique describes this all in her diary, first telling of everyday life -- doing chores, going to church, fun times with her brothers, sisters, and cousins -- and then the difficulties she faces as the British impose more restrictions on her people, culminating in the unjustified deportation of her people, and Angelique's struggle to retain hope in the heartbreak that follows.

This book is one of my favorite books from the Dear Canada series. Angelique is a wonderfully real character who brings to life the heartbreaking story of the Acadians and the tragedies they faced during their forced exile from their homelands. I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy historical fiction or who enjoyed previous Dear Canada books.

Fancy a brave adventure filled with knights and chivalry? The Middle Ages might be over, but John Matthew's captivating tales might make you think otherwise. Coupled with actor Anthony Head's magnificent storytelling, and Giovanni Manna's delightful illustrations, these seven stories come alive! Children and adults alike will love to revisit this CD and paperback collection time and time again.
