This book is one of the best kept secrets in wine books. It is easy to understand and provides an exceptional amount of information on all aspects of wine. This is one of the best wine books I have ever bought and I own a couple of dozen wine books.

Careful scholarship
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-10
Dr. David Stewart has written a solid piece of scholarship, characterized by workmanlike though lively prose and convincing evidence and argumentation. This book should have been more widely recognized for the way it corrobates certain approaches to complex regional idenities in the early modern period (c.f. Linda Colley and Peter Sahlins) as well as for the way it complicates many of our assumptions about the reign of Louis XIV. While we have known for quite some time that Louis XIV was not without failures in his foreign policy, historians have generally characterized his "domestic situation" as stable, peaceful, etc. with little resistance to his centralization of the interior. Stewart makes it quite clear that these views are in need of revision (though he probably could have pointed out more forecefully the significance of his conclusions). The Catalans would tolerate little attenuation of their cultural autonomy. In order for Louis to exercise any political authority in trans-Pyrenean Catalunya, the monarchy was forced into negotiations. So much for absolutism!

Amazing 7th Century Astrology

This Jewish astrologer charted everything from the Flood, to Jesus and Mohammed's birth. He died about 817. Astronomy, astrology and math were born and this is one of the first major writer/chart casters from the earliest times.

If you are into Hellenistic-Arabic astrological history, this is a very interesting Harvard monograph, where Masha'allah's work is studied and even critiqued for errors.

A play by a theatre lover and artist, for fellow theatre lovers.

Review Date: 2007-09-03
Playwright teacher and artistic director of the Edmonton Theatre Company Stewart Lemoine has crafted a brilliant play, At the Zenith of the Empire. Set in 1913, when well-known tragedienne Sarah Bernhardt traveled to Edmonton, Alberta to perform in the final act of Alexandre Dumas' "The Lady of the Camellias", At the Zenith of the Empire is a saga inspired by "Fallen Empires", John Orrell's famous history of Edmonton's early theatre scene. Narrated by "The Divine Sarah" herself, At the Zenith of Empire imagines theatre in a time of yore with flair and color, steeped in emotion and heavy with the history of timeless landmarks such as Ada Boulevard and the Groat Ravine. A play by a theatre lover and artist, for fellow theatre lovers.

Refreshing for the Seventies!

Dr. Stewart rivets our attention to what real writing is all about: writing through the voice of the author. With the onset of social construction theory, Stewart's message may have become passe for some, but for those of us who too often were forced to write within the guidelines of five paragraph essays, Stewart taps the wellsprings of creativity itself. While other more recent textbooks may expound more eloquently on the writing and rewriting process (or "vision and revision" as Donald Murray calls it), the fact is that Stewart's book is, historically, one of the very first to tackle the subject of writing from a student's point of view. His democratic approach gives his readers credit for the ability to be creative in their own right. The teacher's role? To get out of the way of their students' writing

A Classic

Since this is a children's book I'll keep it clean. Actually a classic, this is a dekliberately corny cash grab by the original sell out Martin Luther. A children's book advertised as serrious yoga. O.k., but the artwork should've been a lot better and marketed at adults. The poem itself isw a timeless masterpiece about the birth of Jesus, illustrated. If sung aloud, can be very serious and powerful yoga. My niece has a lot of children's books and my mom gets them they're not more than 5 dollars, but come on it's the reading equivalent of drinking corn syrup. Fix the artwork for adults please. Says this reviewer. I'm getting a copy for my two nieces for Christmas this year and got one for myself and will get one for my best friend and grandmother as well. This might be worth money some day.

NECESSARY READING
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-13
I found this book interesting from beginning to end. It is refreshing to read anthropologists and historians who take responsibility for producing culture and not just writing about it. Included in this book are poems, short stories, and essays that defy description (I found the essays more compelling than the fictional writing). The book gave me a deeper understanding of the fieldwork experience itself, since the more flexible styles of writing in the book maintain the tension between the culture the author is writing about and the experience of living within a different culture. Perhaps as we pile up more and more information about other cultures we need to change direction and consider why we write in the first place. This volume gives us one possible direction that social science writing can go in. This type of thing has been done before, and no doubt will be done again, but as I far as I know there are only a few collections available. This is a valuable addition to that list.

This has to be my 9 month old daughter's favorite book. She especially loves the illustrations. We love to read it to her at bedtime. It is a sweet story about how precious children are and how we should enjoy being parents. I can't wait to get more books by this same author.
