This book is wonderful. It is completely told from the duck's point of view, which coincedently (surprisingly) is thick with anti-hunting sentiments. Nearly every page has one reference or another to how hearltless, cruel, unfair, etc that hunters are. Whether you agree with this sentiment or not, the blatant one sideness of the story makes this a very amusing book (I first read this when I was 7, now I'm 21 and I still love it, as a child I loved the plot and the characters, as an adult I love how Burgess is able to convey his beliefs and naturalist knowledge into a children's story)

The wild tales woven by Mr. Burgess are just up a child's alley. My children asked for this book over and over. At times we were laughing so hard, we had to stop reading to wipe our eyes. We highly recommend this book for a family reading evening.

This book is a a much needed text that speaks to the African- American congregation. Dr. Stewart uses the twelve prophetic principles as a foundation that will help the leadership to strategically develop a growing congregation to meet the needs of its community. I have found that the book uses a sound theological foundation and good scholarship. This is not a how to book. This book can be used as a bible study, retreat study and for long range planning. This book is not a church growth book. It is a book that will help the church to discern their gifts for ministry. This book guides us through all the stages it takes to develop a growing and effective congregation . I highly suggest this book for all church leaders both lay and clergy.

An excellent collection of articles on black political economy

Review Date: 2006-02-24
This new volume of essays on the emerging field of African American political economy is both provocative and remarkably comprehensive. It features articles by many of the leading thinkers in the field, such as Manning Marable, William Darity, Thomas Boston, Richard America, Cecilia Conrad, Patrick Mason and James Stewart (the last three are also among the book's editors). The book will make an excellent text for courses in political economy, history, sociology and economics which focus on the African American experience, as well as more general courses which seek a solid historical and theoretical analysis. The book was also selected as one of Choice magazine's Outstanding Academic Titles for 2005.
As the preface notes, the book is premised on two basic themes: first, the idea that race matters. Second, the idea that history matters. A reader outside the field of economics may be excused for wondering why these commonsense ideas could possibly be considered provocative. The simple answer is that most of the economics profession views both race and history as unimportant; race is seen as a temporary effect of market power, which perfect competition will eliminate, while history is seen as secondary to theory. A major theme of the book is the many shortcomings of this view.
The book is divided into nine sections, which take the reader through a rich set of theoretical and historical arguments, providing a deep context for understanding the current economic situation for the African American community. Early sections focus on the development of the `black labor force', discussing slavery, sharecropping, the uneven economic development of Europe and Africa, and the complex relationship between organized labor and African Americans.
The book is an extremely important attempt to grapple with the problem of race in the U.S. today, in all its complexity. It is recommended to all serious students of social theory.

The title of this book is an appropriate one for a study of gender relations, for we live not in but after Eden -- a fact that is especially evident in the ongoing tensions between men and women. Reflecting much careful deliberation, After Eden not only deals sensitively with the painful realities of broken gender relations but also puts forth a biblically inspired vision of shalom, healing, hope and reconciliation.
Written from an informed Christian perpective by an interdisciplinary team of scholars, the book discusses the history of feminism in its Christian and secular forms, analyses the tensions and compatibilities between Reformed chritianity and feminism, and looks at the relationship of gender to various cultural and social institutions. What makes After Eden unique is its wide-ranging scope; no other book treats, as this one does, the systematic embedding of gender issues in all areas of life.

A superb 200-page introduction to numerical analysis

This is an excellent elementary introduction to numerical analysis, only basic math is required. It is fun and easy to read. This is a "small" book; the largest section (linear equations) being 66 pages. However, it does cover a lot of ground.
Code fragments are in C and FORTRAN. The C code obviously hasn't been tested (abs() instead of fabs() throughout). There are many typos in the text as well as in the code fragments.
