I have read both of the books in the Great and the Terrible (i hope) seriers. I loved this author's interpertation of what and how we were before we came to earth and how we ourselves have picked how we were going to live here. I personally could not put either book down until I was done it.

I have been a member of the LDS Church since I was 8, making my way on others testimonies, having a blind faith on all that was being taught to me, and never really living my faith. I am now 48 and after having listened to this series, my soul literally awoke, and sang with joy. This has been a spiritual guide to strengthing mine own testimony.

I am waiting for the next book in this series.

Pull on your cartharts, cork boots and flannel shirt

I found this book in my youth ministers office after he moved out. Evidently, it was a gift and obviously it was never read. Ready to give it the heave-ho into the trashcan, I paused and looked at it again. Am I glad it did- it is a delightful book.

It is a collection of short stories about the history of the Pacific Northwest up to the early twentieth century. A third generation Oregonian, thought I knew Northwest history, but this book filled me in a side of history never taught in school. For instance, Holbrooks tells us of outlaw Jim Turnow who he describes as the most crafty and dangerous man ever to roam the timbered reaches of the Pacific Northwest- a cold blooded killer who had a reign of terror in Grays Harbor. Compare this killer to the story of Miss Fern Hobbs, a twenty-five year old, 104-pound secretary to Governor West, who single handily disarmed and brought peace to lawless mining town of Copperfield Oregon. By far, my favorite story is about The Death and Times of Joshua the Prophet. A charismatic leader who lead astray the women of Corvallis Oregon, the ending of this story is both surprising and tragic.

Holbrook takes us to another time and to another culture. His prose is beautiful; it is a work of art. So put on your cartharts and cork boots and flannel shirt and tin hat, this is a great read. Even if you are not from the Pacific Northwest, you will be captivated by these stories. Buy this book and place it in your guest room. Your guests will thank you for a great read.

This is an anthology of some of Holbrook's mid-1900's articles about the development of the NW around the turn of the last century. Holbrook's prose is easy-reading but carries well-researched along with humor and style. Each chapter is a treat!

If you haven't read Holbrook before, who should I compare him to?..... Well, if Ken Burns was primarily a writer, I think that he might produce similar stuff.

There is a bonus in the introduction. The editor's lengthy piece fills us in on who Stewart H Holbrook was and is fascinating reading in itself.

This writer's work deserves further resurrection.

How often have you faced obstacles in your life? I mean something really BIG! Like an extremely ill family member. How did you handle yourself? How did you handle your day to day activities? Where did your faith take you? In Wings As Eagles, Ann Stewart lets us into her life describing how she answered these questions, humbly, through her daily life, when her husband was near death. Singing and offering praise to Jesus, sometimes at the darkest and deepest hours, she shows how Jesus sustained her and her family during this time. Read how she overcame difficulties and hardships while all the time giving God all the Glory.

I just finished reading the book, "With Wings as Eagles" last night and I feel Blessed to have been a part of Ann and Jack's lives for this brief moment in time through their book.

Why, you may ask...because it strengthened MY faith. Sometimes when the going gets rough and you see no end in sight it's to easy for us to forget that we have a loving God who asks that we cast our burden's on Him and He will give us rest.

We are always one with God and He sent His only begotten Son to be tortured and to die on a cross, so that we may be healed. Physically, emotionally and financially, He is, and always will be, your true source and supply.

Ann and Jack's story should be a must read for everyone. Through out thier trials you feel thier love for God and it only reaffirms what we should ALL be aware of...that without Him we would not be here at all, to live life abundantly, experiencing joy and fulfillment while living a life of laughter, love and praise.

May you and your family be forever Blessed!

I bought this book to help me with a quilt I was planning to make. At first I was disappointed and then I realized that having taken some floral arranging classes I might enjoy this book. Boy did I ever! The information is marvelous and well planned and extremely helpful. There is much you can learn about flowers and how to treat them from this book. Instead of returning it as I had originally thought I would, I find myself looking things up all the time.

I saw Jane on "Martha Stewart" where she was talking about her work for the Duchess of York's wedding and i was hooked. World Flowers is one of the most incredible books available on floral design. Each chapter represents a different country-- and the influences and ideas as they apply to flowers. The best part-- she gives easy tips to create these arrangements on your own. imagine-- putting single light pink roses inside individual pale pink cupcake papers, and arranging them on stacked cake plates. So delightful!

I've tried a lot of the recipes from this book, and they're all fantastic. The photos are great, and the food tastes authentic, not dumbed down, american (aka, bland) versions. Strong flavors, interesting ingredients, great food. I own this book, and I'm buying my mom a copy for Mother's Day.

Delicious and exotic chicken recipes!

This is one of the best books for international chicken recipes. The pages are filled with exotic offerings and the recipes often call for unusual ingredients, so it's not for the timid. My results for the Lemongrass Chicken and Coconut Chicken were absolutely fabulous (although I did omit ingredients that were not at hand). Many of the recipes are accompanied by mouth-watering photos to inspire you when choosing amongst the variety of dishes. My only gripe is that some of the Indonesian and Thai recipes look to be mere variations on each other. But in summary, I'm looking forward to trying more of the recipes in this book.

Like all of Ms. Smith's skating books, A Year In Figure Skating is a wonderful, objective view of the 1995-96 season, complemented by gloriously vivid photos, most of which I have never seen in any other skating publication. If you are a fan of the sport this book is a must have.

This is an absolutely gorgeous book, which takes you through all the major competitions in a year of skating. The pictures are fantastic, and there is so much information about skaters. I really enjoyed the chapter about skating in Israel, and I loved the Sergei Grinkov Tribute (note to Katia/G&G fans-this book is worth buying for just that chapter!)!!! I learned so much about skating and competitions. Beverly Smith has a great follow-up to her earlier book, "Figure Skating: A Celebration"

A Look Back at the Six-Team NHL

Review Date: 2002-04-21
This book is a true treasure-chest of puck history for any fan
of the National Hockey League. "Years of Glory" chronicles the pre-expansion "Original-Six" -team era of the NHL. On the inside front and back covers are shown old-style tin table hockey players in the uniforms of the "Original-Six" team members: the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs.
Inside you will find colorful stories and photos of a bygone era when players went without helmets and goalies without masks. Many of the all-time greats are featured: Gordie Howe, Rocket Richard, Bobby Hull, Jean Beliveau, Jacques Plante, Glenn Hall, Terry Sawchuk, and Bobby Orr among many. There is even a chapter on minor-pro hockey during the six-team era with players Johnny Bower, Guyle Fielder and Andy Hebenton featured. Many interesting statistics like Stanley Cup playoff scores and league draft results are listed. The catalogue of dozens of great old photos alone makes this volume well worth its price.

Fantastic year-by-year account of the postwar Original Six era. Each season is covered with extra reading on things like the Habs' unforgotten dynasty (i.e. the '60s) or the Wings' 7(?) straight first-place finishes. Photos are superb and the writing is first-rate. I never lived through this era but the book made it come alive for me.

I've read a lot of yoga books and this is definitely one of the best -- and one of the most beautiful. The writing is simple and clear, making yoga concepts and philosophy very accessible. There's a real focus on the spirit of yoga through the poses, rather than just a "how to," mechanical approach to contorting the body. The gorgeous photographs are the perfect accompaniment to the text. It's also a very comfortable length, making a perfect gift for anyone who's curious about yoga and wants to learn more.

The books in this series manage to walk the delicate balance of being fun and humorous while still imparting a lot of knowledge to the reader. My three sons (8,7, and 5) couldn't put them down and neither could my husband and me. We homeschool and have encountered a lot of the topics in our history studies and were impressed by how much the books cover.

We also liked how gross/disturbing concepts were softened by the amusing illustrations of david Antram. Very impressive.

We plan to own them all.
