Rousing Collection of 1960's Social Literature!
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-06
For those of us who were actively involved in the events of the 1960s, this collection of relevant works is a virtual treasure trove, containing everything one would need in order to gain a better informed and more balanced perspective as to what was said and thought about a range of important social issues so hotly debated in those fabled times of Vietnam, civil unrest, and social experimentation.

Since so much of the documentation from that time is now sadly out of print, this collection serves as an active antidote to what has become a predominating character asssassination foisted by the new right to the effect that the sixties was all about sex, drugs and rock and roll, which tends to trivialize what actually was said, done, thought, and debated during those turbulent years. If one approaches those times in the proper historical framework, objectively searching for the evidence as to what it was that happened then and how it changed everything, then a book like this can serve a yeoman's purpose by presenting much of the original material for a person's reading pleasure and ultimate edificiation.

To my mind, the sixties represented a time when the younger generation simply refused to accept the world as presented, to uncritically accept the tired old platitudes, hypocrisies, and self-serving myths of the main-stream older generation. Seen in such a light, a lot of the social quesioning, cultural experimentation, and terrifying 'sturm und drang' elements of the times can be better understood.

In the trenches of all the major events, from civil unrest to Vietnam to the counterculture, were people who were actively questionaing conventional wisdom and the tried and true ways of the established society. Many of the selections from this book can help a curious reader to better grasp what the issues were and what the debate on the issues centered around. This is a supremely useful tool in helping to whittle away at the myths being perpetrated by the conservative revisionists about the events of the 1960s. Enjoy, amigo, and keep on trucking!

Outstanding primary source material

Much of the liturature of this period is difficult from the historian's point of view because there are either nostalgic and apologetic (e.g. Gitlin and Miller) accounts by former particiants or their are bitter diatribes against the 1960s (e.g. Horowitz and Lasch). Of the two groups mentioned, the former is more accurate and critical than the later, but nothing -- nothing at all -- comes close to the primary source documents and selections in "The Sixties Papers". Of the six of seven anthologies out there, this is by far the best.

A feast of dark things

In this collection of episodes in an ongoing life story, Hay uses her narrator "Bethie" to vent a vast store of anger and resentment. Each story relates encounters between Bethie and other women. Men flit in and out of some scenes, leaving no prolonged mark. Bethie's interactions with each of the women is related with deep introspection, but none of them, Beth included, exhibit any depth. Not that any of the characters fails a reality check. Hay is too fine a writer to foist implausible people on the reader. The characters are carefully, even exquisitely drawn. The exchanges are nearly uniformly superficial, but Bethie's reflections and self-assessments on them are intensely revealing. At the end, you will ask yourself "could this woman be my friend?"

It matters little whether an individual episode begins or ends darkly - the darkness is there, persistent throughout the collection. Bethie demands, in her mind, much from her friends. Failure to deliver, or stepping from a preconceived image, arouses her wrath quickly. That anger is expressed, but entirely in her mind. Few shouting matches. No clearing of issues. Simply drifting apart or, in a few cases, some prickly rebounds. Being a friend of Bethie's is a high-risk investment with few rewards. In fact, none of the relationships revealed here could be remotely called "friendships" no matter how frequently the word crops up.

Although a disturbing read, the nomination for many awards this book received is testimony to its value. Calling the writing "honed" is puny understatement. Yet, what the book accomplishes remains elusive. Hay has offered none of her characters as a role model. Perhaps the real challenge in this book is inherent in its "women's view." Is this book an example of why many women censure the right of male writers to assume their viewpoint? This book may be throwing down the gauntlet to male writers to delve this deeply into a woman's psyche. The vivid exposure of Bethie's inner thoughts so genuinely portrayed, show Hay's skills cannot be challenged. A valuable expression of inner thoughts, this book is a fine example of creative writing. A powerful exploration of friendships between women.

The title of my review says it all--this is an essential collection for anyone serious about sound art/theory/poetry or avant-garde music. The CD is a very nice bonus, full of unbelievable rarities as well.

By focusing on "earplay" in texts by James Joyce, Ezra Pound, and other modern writers, this collection's twelve essays investigates the relationship between acoustical technologies and 20th-century experimental poetics. The accompanying CD offers soundtracks of early radio sounds, poetry readings, Dada cabaret performances, jazzoetry, audio-poems and contemporary Caribbean DJ dub poetry.

Children are curious about and fascinated with nature. Couple this curiosity with the experience of gardening and the result will be a child that appreciates the fruits, vegetables, and grains that nature has to offer. "Sow And Grow: A Gardening Book For Children" is specifically designed and written by Tina Davis to provide young readers with a calendar of indoor-gardening and related activities, each of which is linked to seasonal celebrations and changes. Beautifully illustrated throughout, "Sow And Grow" begins with basic explanations of the various parts of plants from seed to flower to fruit. Then addresses what plants need to thrive. Then beginning with January and working through to December, specific and 'kid friendly' projects are provided with step-by-step instructions. January is 'Growing Plants from Seeds', May is 'Window Boxes', September is 'Pressing Flowers and Leaves', December is 'Decorating and Caring for Houseplants'. Enhanced with extensive Gardening Notes, "Sow And Grow" is enthusiastically recommended for both family and community library Gardening reference and instructional guide collections for children.

Stewart Custer writes from a Biblical, Faith and factual point of view. I've used his book as part of teaching fifth graders about the Godly wonders of our universe! WOW! (This book is actually written more for high school and college students and for adults--and a great book for devotions.) We have an annual "Star Gazing" overnight for our fourth and fifth graders. Our astronomer (who is a practicing Christian) from the local public college brings his telescope and locks onto special events going on in the heavens so we can watch and wonder at the wonders. Custer's book is so very good--so very helpful! I also gave a copy of this book to our astronomer as a gift. Stewart Custer knows the heavens and his faith is solid. This book should have a rating of billions of stars!

The book is beautifully written. I am still reading it and will keep on doing so.

Seem to be an mistake on page 6, the salary example. The earning table, third column shoulde be {5000, 5000, 6600, 6600, 8200, 8200} instead of {5000, 5000, 5800, 5800, 6600, 6600}.

Considering it's written by scientists (not engineers), such numerical errors are forgivable :)

The book also discussed about statistics and on page 48, it mentioned standard error (or Standard Error of Mean), which seems to be quite controvertial according to

http://www.sportsci.org/resource/stats/meansd.html

Anyway, I searched, there is going to be a 2nd edition

I can thoroughly recommend this small but extremely valuable book. There is a mass of literature and expertise for all the equipment, chemicals and materials students will encounter during the course of their research but there is nothing equivalent for the most important piece of equipment, the mind!

This book attempts to provide that by persuading the reader to take a step back from the humdrum or obvious and look at their projects from beginning to end, even before it is begun!

There are real-life examples (I had great fun trying out the puzzles) that encourage the ability to ask the right questions and highlight the pitfalls so often encountered in scientific investigation. You'll be amazed at what you learn and how easily you can avoid unnecessary work. By the time you have read this book you should have a great understanding of the reality of experimental investigation: from design of experiments, through analysis and interpretation of data to presentation of results.

I've been reading Leonard Cohen since I was 13 and in love with the words "freakish nipples". In Stranger Music, I find myself presented with a feast of words by the man I crushed on from the first moment I heard his voice.

My copy is dog-eared and coffee stained after years of returning to it again and again. Covering everything he's ever written in as lush a way as a volume this tightly edited will allow, everyone will find something to fall in love with in this book.

Highly recommended and I'd say that even if I wasn't crazy in love with him. ;)

Stranger Music: Collected Works of a 20th Century Mystic

"There is a mood for which Beethoven is too loud, and Bach too wise, and silence too good for a filthy heart such as beats in my breast." --It's Probably Spring

And for all of these moods, there is Leonard Cohen.

To many, Leonard Cohen is known only as a sub-mainstream musician and sometime theologian; yet the scope of his artistic genius reaches far beyond music and religious thought. Stranger Music, a collection of his works from 1956-1993, provides the uninitiated Cohen reader with a broad sampling of poetry and prose excerpts, offering everything from lucid and uplifting spirituality (a la Book of Mercy) to darker confessional stylings. Any fan of modern literature would be well advised to incorporate this anthology into his collection. At times conventional, at times avant-garde, Cohen is a writer that transcends genre and accurate definition, and in doing so probes the collective unconscious for themes which pertain to all of modern humanity. His questions, and many of his answers, all presented in his easily accessible style, are universally applicaple, and an experience well worth the reading. For any passionate-literate individual who seeks an artistic alternative to the nihilism of our time, this man speaks for you.

Spend the twelve bucks. You'll congradulate yourself on the investment.

hardcover first edition book tribute to the great stars of Hollywood's Golden Age (1920s-1950s). This lavish, large-sized (9"x11") hardcover book features some of the most spectacular, high quality large photos printed from the original negative on heavy stock paper. Much better than normal photo books. It also comes in paperback and I believe was re printed in hardback at least once. This review is of Format: Hardcover Publish Date: 1987 ISBN: 0941434974 List Price: 1st edition hardback original list $24.99

The paper pages are thick glossy & fantastic and the images wow!
Old Hollywood come to life. No 1970s pictures thank goodness, as they aren't "old Hollywood".

I highly recommend this book. It far surpassed my expectations. Most of the photos are full page.

Sub Rosa was written in competition with other personal attempts to let the word out about America's unknown spy agency in World War Two. The authors, as they stated, were involved in operations conducted by OSS. Basically, the book is like sticking yourself with a needle full of awesome. You read the book, and knowing how long ago it was written and by who, along with the writing style (which still writes somewhat clandestine), you can't help but get the feeling that you're on assignment with the men written about. I'd say get this book wherever possible, but I know that the only way everyone could get a copy is if it were accepted as another book of the Bible. So just get one and jealously guard it- because it's a wholloping good ride.

This is a cool old book. It details the founding & running of the OSS. There are many stories of how OSS agents were recruited, and how they parachuted behind enemy lines to take on (at that time) top secret missions which influenced the outcome of many battles in many arenas. Very cool.

Since I just received the book this is actually a review of the seller. It is in this space because for some reason I can't get the feedback button to work. The book arrived in much better condition than I had expected for such a great price. And even after a post office snafu the seller went out of her way to see that the book arrived as quickly as possible and obviously packaged with great care. My review of this seller is Excellent. The first ten pages of the book are excellent as well.

Stewart asserts that "male masochism was a rhetorical strategy through which men asserted their cultural and political authority paradoxically by embracing the notion that they were (and always had been) wounded and suffering." A bold claim which the author largely backs up with reference to the works of von Sacher-Masoch, Freud and Wagner, showing that, in her words, "masochistic scenarios, whether in literature, music, the visual arts, or medicalized diagnoses of the fin-de-sicle malaise, stage the male as one who submits to an aestheticized and eroticized gaze and voice." More or less exactly what I feel when I enter Milady's dungeon for a brutal flogging.
