Edith Fowke collected much Canadian folklore and folk songs during her life, and wrote many books about these subjects. This is a good introductory book. Fowke carefully includes songs, jokes, stories, etc, from each part of Canada, showing that Newfoundland and Quebec do not have a monopoly on our folklore.

Far too often, Canadians downplay their rich cultural history and undervalue their store of folklore. Hopefully, more books like this one will help us to learn and appreciate our folklore and will whet a thirst to discover more.

If you're into birding, birds, or just curious about what it would be like to actually share your home with several colorful (feathered) characters (no cages!) -- check out this book. Ms. Johns relates her true accounts of sharing a life with birds with compassion and much humor, revealing her ultimate goal to rehabilitate and release birds back into their natural habitat. In addition to her recollections of individual avian personalities, she also explores deeper philosophical themes, often in tandem with her beautiful artwork generously peppered throughout the book. Her descriptions of the Nova Scotia four seasons, so much an artistic backdrop to the book, are rich and entertaining. You can almost be there with her, and want to be!
I am definitely going to read more stories by this talented writer/artist/bird-lover! Hope you'll check out her books, too.

Birdlovers will cherish this wonderful book....

I had childlike zeal as I joyously read about Linda's love of the natural world, especially birds. The author's drawing talents are beautifully woven with her gift of writing-rich,reverent,and funny. Her awe for nature and her respectful approach to all
living things is to be imitated by all.Though some words are weighty, children should definitely read this book as well as adults.I was as happy as a child as I read about her outdoor adventures and excited when a new bird member joined the household! This book has become an instant favourite, and I certainly can see myself rereading it,as so many times have I revelled in the author's creaive, rich use of words to describe the beauty/mystery of her nature treks.....wow.And how wondrous.

THHIS IS NOT A REVIEW, BUT A CORRECTION IN YOUR LISTINGS OF ONE OF MY OTHER BOOKS. You mis-spell my author's name in one of my books now out of print. in my book Coulomb and the Evolution of Physics and Engineering in Eighteenth-Century France, you have my name listed as spelled Gilmor, and Gillmour. INCORRECT. Correct author's name
C. Stewart Gillmor, as in four of my other books you list.

A Real Biography

This biography of Fred Terman was thorough, detailed, and well-documented. The author did a fine job in piecing together the biograhical data into an enjoyable narrative. At times it is very scientific and gets into real science, at others its heart warming and all about love, family -- the stuff that really matters.

What is really amazing is the amount of documentation -- letters, notes, historical records, sketches, etc -- that not only the author dug up, but apparently Fred kept and then donated to the University. I learned about a lot of other things Fred donated to the University too -- such as his house and his book royalties. It goes without saying, but I learned a lot about Fred.

Although I am a Cornellian and not a Cardinal, I believe that this book should be required reading for every freshman entering both Stanford and Cornell, in the summer prior to their matriculation. Not only does this tell a story of a real person, with weaknesses, faults, and strengths, it tells a story of a human who perservered through terrible, life-threatening illnesses to become a leader who changed not only Stanford and Palo Alto and also catalyzed Silicon Valley, but the world. Moreover, it also is a story of family, of things good in life that I believe is still a value in the Valley and was partially responsible for enabling it to springboard off of Fred's initiatives. Finally, it is a story of an entrepreneur, whose vision, perseverance, and care enabled him to achieve greatness, not through himself, but through others, and he reveled in it.

As a Ph.D. student researching entrepreneurship and innovation within the triple helix models (university-industry-government), I was of course interested in why Stanford is such a leader in innovation, and thus this book was a must for me to read, once I learned it was published last fall. However, I got so much more out of it than expected, over and above what I sought to understand intellectually within my narrow field of academic interest. But then again, this is what a good biography is supposed to deliver, is it not?

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2L7Z9BXEVV788 f&b mediaworks (fbmediaworks@gmail.com) loved Freshly Squeezed: A "Write Here, Write Now" Anthology so much we made a trailer for the book. I have never seen so many dedicated, energetic students--many of whom have not been in school for a long time and have full time jobs during the day--throw as much of themselves into writing workshops. The book truly is a triumph, and we thought a little trailer might be the best way to say Thank You CityLit and Thank You Christine Stewart!!

If I may....

I know how it is when one approaches an anthology. It's usually a mixed bag. There are no guarantees. But having lived with these pieces many times in the Write Here, Write Now workshops, and through the editing process, I can say that what we're priding ourselves on here is a wide variety of compelling writing. Each piece will draw you in and give you something to think about. And the range of subjects, styles, voices, genres and forms is pretty amazing. We have ten minute plays, blog entries, personal narrative essays, short stories, novel excerpts and poems. We have crime stories, based-on-a-true story stories, a novel in stories, satire, sci-fi, romance, talking cakes, talking mice, essays on death, love, music, friendship, poetry on personal and spiritual transformation, war....It's a veritable buffet (don't worry, the only scrapple is the one on the cover). Yes, Baltimore has Madison Smartt Bell, Laura Lippman, Anne Tyler, and Rafael Alvarez, and they are all terrific writers, but so are the local everyday people in those diners at two a.m. and workshops and critique groups all over the city. We wanted to celebrate them and share them with you. So here is your first taste. Dig in and enjoy.

There are many books on the Galápagos Islands but Paul Stewart's work is certainly one of the most appealing and true representations of this famous spot in the Pacific Ocean. Naturally, Darwin occupies an important part of Mr. Stewart's prose, but equally impressive is the space given to extraordinary photos. This is not surprising given that Paul Stewart is first and foremost a photographer.

Whether this book can finally dispel the doubts of some people about evolution vs creation is anybody's guess but it will not be for lack of authentic facts as described by the author. The book is a real page-turner.

If you want to take an exotic trip to South America to visit the Galapagos Islands, but can't actually afford the air fare and hotel accommodations, you'll want to sit back in the comfort of your home and enjoy "Galapagos: The Islands That Changed the World". The commentary was wonderful, and the colors, sites and scenes were magnificent.

This is one of the best nature documentaries I've ever seen and it left me yearning for more. If you have even the slightest love of nature and an interest in the ecology of our world, you'll want to see this outstanding DVD.

I'm a 17-year-old who started reading this book for my literature class and I thought it is a very informative book for teenagers. The book informs you of everything you want to know; it has a lot of good details. The book quotes exactly what the interviewers say. It gives an opportunity to those teens in gangs to explain why they join, what they feel, and what they want. This is a great book and I can read it more than 5 times and I won't get bored. I really recomend this book to everyone. It should be a "must read" book on every teen's list.

The Opposing Viewpoints series is a good series for students and others who are working on some of the hot button issues of today. Each volume contains essays and articles that explore the issues thoroughly from several different angles. Sometimes there are two clear sides, but sometimes it is a bit more nuanced.

This particular volume deals with the Gangs. The issues explored within the volume include the level of the problem in the United States; is this in fact a serious problem or one that is heighted by the media? Are gangs active outside major urban areas? The factors that influence gang membership are explored, including family issues, respect and self-esteem issues, and desire for money. The various palns for eliminating or reigning in gang activity are explored, including the idea that gangs themselves can be brought to end the violence by themselves.

Overall, this is a very good beginners book to the issue. It helps to set the guidelines for debate and discussion. There is an appendix with facts and statistics about the gangs and gang activities, study questions, further reading suggestions and an index. The author, Gail B. Stewart, has written over 80 books for children and young adults on a wide range of topics.

I loved this book. It demonstrated for me the real "art" of gardening. William Morris was a clever and far sighted man who advocated staying within the parameters of nature and natural beauty when making gardens. He also perpetuated the "garden room" theme which has been enormously popular since the eighteeth century. I refer to this book continuously and strive to design and construct garden rooms in my own garden which are as beautiful.

This is a wonderfully complex novel
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-01-23
Gates of Ivory is perhaps Margaret Drabble's most difficult novel because it weaves back and forth between London and Cambodia, between "Good Time" and "Bad Time." However, amidst social commentary, Drabble's humor comes through, and the ending is reminiscent of the ending of Virginia Woolf's "Mrs. Dalloway." I cannot do this novel justice in a short, quickly-written review. I can only strongly recommend that you read it.

Genius, Overlooked
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-01
Margaret Drabble is a literary genius. Her Headeland Trilogy, of which THE GATES OF IVORY is the concluding volume, is one of the great literary accomplishments of the late twentieth century. In it, an entire world--the global village itself--is analyzed, along with its problems, through the eyes and stories of a myriad of engaging, three-dimensional characters.

Because her stories have a substantially feminine focus; because Drabble's prose and work as a whole requires sustained attention to detail in order to perceive the interconnections and ramifications; because her styles of writing aren't as flashy as those of Rushdie (et al.); because she isn't intellectually fashionable (lord knows why); because she's a Brit and not an American; because her sister's less enduring but more popular/academic work sometimes overshadows her own; because she's relentlessly normal as opposed to brash, odd, or glitzy: all these possibilities still do not excuse the reading public as a whole from their general lack of attention to Drabble's stunning accomplishments as a novelist.

Read THE RADIANT WAY, A NATURAL CURIOSITY, and THE GATES OF IVORY and be the first on your block to recognize Drabble as Nobel-prize material!
