I have improved a lot after I got this book. It's very good for advanced players.

For Intermediate Plus/Advanced players.
Perhaps 350 problems in 24 chapters covering all aspects of defense. You will be exposed to many types/categories of defensive problems. Such as:

- opening leads
- signaling
- inferences from bidding (shape, HCP)
- counting the hand (shape, HCP)
- avoiding end plays
- 2nd hand High
- Ducking
- Giving Declarer a losing option
- Carding technique (pinning/smother play)

Many of the hands took me several minutes to think about.
Not that I could do that at the table, but it helps focus you on what the correct thought processes are.

Very worthwhile book

Steward spent 16 months working on this book and it shows. He takes the reader from "I" Day (Induction Day) to caps in the air graduation with the permission of the Navy. The photos tell the story. If you or anyone you know in interested in Annapolis, buy this book used.

This is one of the best books I have ever invested in this is great if you are ever interested the life of the midshipmen. The book is very insitefull. You recive an in-depth view of the traditions and expectations of the Academy and the Midshipmen. It is worth your time and money to purchase this book.

This is a beautiful book of poetry that comes from the heart of the author who has lived in so many different parts of the world with extensive periods in the US and and in Japan. Dr. Ellens transcends Western and Eastern cultures. Many poems deal with the process of searching and being comfortable with not knowing all the answers.

Just a few of my favorites -- The foreward for Broken Light talks about, "prism of the human mind has many sides, and the light breaking through is itself broken ... there are truths that cannot be told for there are no words, nor thoughts, even but only hints and guesses." There is an autobiographical poem entitled, "The Ark of Salvation", that deals with the author's life of wanderings. Another poem, "Reflections", written in 1992 on the author's 65th birthday, laments that the world is getting younger (as he reaches 65). In this poem, after talking about death, Dr. Ellens ends the poem with, "For nothing is ever lost, nothing can be lost, for how can anything fall out of the universe?".

Some of the other poems really meaningful to me are, "Karma", and a New Year's day poem. "The Gate".

About 27 pages of this 169 page book are devoted to essays on topics such as mysticism, spirituality, masks in religions, the nature of existence, truth, destiny. It is clear that Dr. Ellens is a very learned man who is comfortable with Western and Eastern religions. His respect for both shows throughout the book.

This book of poems has a beautiful jacket with a picture of birds flying towards light, depicting the last stages of the flight of human souls toward the Light. There is a poem called, "Coming to the Light" related to the cover. This is a "coffee table" size (8.5x11) hard cover book with a very attractive cover.

I wait anxiously for Gordon Ellens' next book of poetry.

I've added this to the list of books I recommend for teaching simple science lessons in Kindergarten. If you have the kids bring in shells it could be a great "Sharing Day" time.

Also can create a good discussion on how we show love to each other.

Great story that shows a healthy father-daughter relationship. It could give some good ideas of ways to spend time with your kids.

Also, I like learning to i.d. seashells while you read the story. If you think about it, each shell on each page goes along with what is going on in the story on that page. We bought some shells at the craft store to match up with the shells from the book. Next time we go to the beach maybe I can name some of the shells I find!

Also teaches that love is a behavior, it shows in the way you act towards each other. It isn't always a feeling, but it is always in the way you act.

i read this book cover to cover and it just arrived yesterday.
i could not put it down. being to young to actualy have any rememberance of the acual event, this book takes you and puts you there, giving you a great feeling of what it must have been like, for the fans & the players. i have read bums, boys of summer, the last good season & this book here. they are all great and i would have to give this book 5 stars..it is a little on the expensive side now that it is out of print and in such high demand but it is definitley worth every penny.
i have added this to my collection and it is a perfect complement to my magazine "who's a bum" the 40th anniversary of the 1955 brooklyn dodgers"..you get that magazine and this book and you got it all!! BUY IT IF YOU CAN!!!!

In 2004, the Boston Red Sox finally broke their long standing curse and won the World Series. In 1955, a similar event occurred. The Brooklyn Dodgers, who had won many more pennants than the Red Sox, finally defeated their longtime nemesis, the New York Yankees, in the World Series. It was a time of enormous rejoicing in Brooklyn, but in many ways it was the last hurrah. Changing demographic patterns had led to a consistent decline in attendance at Ebbets field, and in a few years, they were the Los Angeles Dodgers. Furthermore, Ebbets field had been leveled, so both aspects of the team in Brooklyn were nothing but memories.
This book is an account of that wonderful season, where all of the memories of previous defeats were erased. It starts with a recapitulation of the failures, the greatest of which was the collapse in 1951, where the Dodgers led the Giants by 13 ½ games in the early part of August. They ended the season in a tie and in the third playoff game, Bobby Thompson hit a home run to send the Dodgers home for the winter.
It is also an account of how the Brooklyn people felt about the Dodgers. When I watched the fine Ken Burns video on baseball, some of the interviews were with people who grew up in Brooklyn and worshipped the Dodgers. This book captures the passion that those people felt for their team, and how in many ways, it was also America's team. When Jackie Robinson became the first black to play in the major leagues, it was for the Dodgers. For years after the color barrier was broken, the Dodgers continued to lead in having black players, so blacks all over the country considered the Dodgers to be their team.
There are some events in baseball that will stand forever, and the Red Sox victory in 2004 will be one of them. However, given the number of times they had played in the World Series and lost, the Dodger victory in 1955 probably surpasses the Red Sox in terms of breaking the pattern of failure. This is especially true when you factor in the fact that it was truly a climax, as shortly after, the Brooklyn Dodgers and their stadium were no more. But, it was truly a joy ride while it lasted, and this book is a wonderful description of an extraordinary season. It is a classic in the history of baseball.

For her creation, and maintenance, of a heroine who is not in the early years of her life, Gail Bowen deserves a lot of credit. Joanne Kilbourn, first introduced to us in "Deadly Appearances" has aged with grace and style by the time we get to "Burying Ariel," and this book shows no sign of her character declining.

Mixing in Joanne's daily life with the sudden stabbing-murder of a loved teacher on campus with ehr usual deft touch, Bowen has definitely left the pattern of every murder being tied so someone in Joanne's past (something that was starting to get a little bit hard to swallow in some of her previous books). This murder is connected to her solely by the place Joanne works, the university, and a respect she had for the deceased.

Tying in radical feminists, student protests, and angry pointed fingers at a man who may have confessed - or merely said the wrong thing at the wrong time - keep the plot humming in this Kilbourn mystery. And as always, it is the depth of character in both villains and hero(ine)s of the book that immerse you totally in what is going on.

In Regina, Canada, everyone associated with the university is stunned to learn that someone killed twenty-seven year old Professor Ariel Warren. The culprit stabbed the popular political science lecturer in the back.

The police have several suspects from a professor previously accused of sexual harassment to Ariel's boy friend radio star Charlie D. The campus' militant women feel Ariel is the victim of a male animal and use her vigil to further their goals rather than as a memorial to the deceased. Realizing the campus is divided and turning ugly, Professor Joanne Kilbourn who has known Ariel for two decades begins to make her own inquiries not yet realizing where the danger really comes from.

BURYING ARIEL is an exciting academic murder mystery that provides insight into extreme campus politics. Readers will take pleasure from the story line though they will wonder how the vigil turned ugly so quickly. The characters seem genuine especially Joanne, her family, and most of the political science department. Though the killer's motive seems stretched, the audience will find the latest Kilbourn Canadian who-done-it to be a delightful amateur sleuth tale.

This is an absolutely marvelous work on the Butterflies of Arizona, and undoubtedly one of the finest state field guides ever created. Includes a topography section (map of the basic parts of a butterfly), concise taxonomic list of species with lots of great photos, selected larvae of certain species, selected predators, and a 'Rare Butterflies' section, which covers the rarities that have been discovered primarily in the southeastern corner of the state. One other thing I especially liked was the Appendix of butterflies listed with their respective host plants. A super, must-have addition to any butterfly library!

A useful book covering the butterflies of Arizona. It is about the same physical dimensions as the Sibley Guide to Birds - a little large for a field guide, but still manageable.

The book is comprised of species descriptions on the left hand side of each facing pair of pages, with beautiful full color photographs of the relevant species on the right hand page. No more flipping between various sections of the book to match text and photos! The species descriptions include distribution within Arizona and general distribution in neighboring states, flight time, description, habitats, host plants and similar species.

There is also a small section on larvae, predators, and parasites.

This book is quite an achievement, I recommend it wholeheartedly.

This book is extraordinary. The multiple prefaces and introductions alone are worthy of five stars. I find the translations of the text itself to be well-balanced.

Dimock and Stewart's translation of the Caitanya Caritamrta (The Nectar of the Acts of Caitanya) is a readable and extremely well-researched edition of the biography of Sri Caitanya, a 16th century Bengali ascetic who is believed by Gaudiya Vaisnavas to have been the androgynous dual incarnation of Krsna and Radha. The lengthy introduction and notes on translation provide readers unfamiliar with the tradition with all the background they need to appreciate the layers of meaning hidden in the text and the narrative strategies of Krsnadasa that come across so well in this translation. For more background, read Dimock's 1966 book, "The Place of the Hidden Moon". a true classic in the literature of South Asian studies. Highly recommended.

Frontenac: The Courtier Governor is the absorbing and deftly researched biography of Louis de Buade, Comte de Frontenac (1622-1698), who was appointed governor general of New France in 1672. Though Louis de Buade was popularly credited with making a daunting and ruthless impression on the Iroquois, defying the military power of colonial Britain, and promoting the imperial expansion of France, his biographer W. J. Eccles (Professor of History, University of Toronto) deftly dissects these myths and steadfastly delves into a more sordid picture of the true Frontenac: a man out of his time who strived to hold on to power and status through corruption, favors at court, and the illicit drive for commerce in the West. A closely researched reexamination and interpretation of primary sources, Frontenac is seminal contribution to a colonial era portrait, and a welcome addition to Canadian and North American history and biography collections.

This is THE book on the fur trade, Canadian colonial government,
the Iroquois Wars, and Frontenac himself. It is not a biography of Frontenac, but an engaging history of French Canada. Highly recommended to me by an expert on the subject.
