June Sprigg's great introduction to the Shakers has happily been reprinted. It is a most beautiful book.

It's rare that something that looks at first glance like a "coffee table book" that should be admired largely for its pictures but that also contains such a thoughtful and illuminating text.

There is no other book that shows as clearly how the Shakers connected practicality and simplicity with elegance and harmony of design. The photographs are subtle, understated but quite lovely to linger over.

It's easy to dismiss the Shakers as a fringe group, and few up us would embrace their doctrine of celibacy. But June Sprigg documents the appeal of their fundamental values: Do all your work as if it was to last for 1,000 years, but live your life as if you knew that the Judgment Day was coming tomorrow. Her ability to articulate this apparent paradox makes this a spiritually moving book.

Buy it as a gift for anyone interested in design, or with a serious interest in religion. And be sure to order two copies--you'll want one yourself.

Shaker: Life, Work and Art is a beautiful book. I first saw acopy several years ago and was disappointed to learn that thehardcover version was out of print. The book has short narrative sections that provide insight into Shaker history, work, and communal and spiritual life. One section captures a "typical" day in the life of the Brethren and Sisters. The enlarged font is easy on the eyes and the top of each narrative page is headed by the famous Shaker wall pegs. The narrative sections are separated by numerous pages of high quality, well-captioned color photographs of Shaker crafts, furniture, and architecture. Lots of beautiful pictures! The Shakers legacy still seems to have a profound impact on our contemporary lives in spite of (or perhaps because of) the simplicity of their work and their unusual communal way of life. Although this book does not present a comprehensive history of the Shakers, it does an admirable job of providing an insight into the lives of these interesting people. This book is deserving of any coffee table and should get a lot of attention in your household. END

Every single woman should share this with her friends! Hilarious and oh, so true! My best friend and I were walking through the bookstore and the little hot-pink book jumped out at me. We cried from laughter as we flipped through the pages. Between the two of us, we've dated pretty much ALL of them...and if you're a single female in the dating game, so have you! I highly recommend this book to be past around on your next "irlfriend night"

This book is hillarious. I literally spent all night talking with my friends about it! There are guys in here that are exactly like the men that you meet- and it makes you think of all the people you know that are like them. Quite a conversational topic- and great coffee table book! I've already bought 3 for other friends. Funny, the person that wants to read it the most is my boyfriend!

I love this book. I bought one for my girlfriend who was having a party. When I arrived she set the book down on the coffee table. Let me just say once it was picked up, it was never put down the rest of the night. People were loving trying to figure out which description best fit their man. Girls loved it, but every single guy at the party read the book to get the inside scoop on just what "type" they are. Watching them glued to the pages, self analyzing themselves was the best part of the evening. BUY IT, BUY IT, BUY IT. You'll have a blast.

I have another book by these authors, so when I saw this I bought it, and my friends at work and I have been laughing at it every day since. It's true what it says- it makes you feel better- it's total comic relief and smart & helpful at the same time like no other book I've seen. It's not just one of those other books that has stupid observations and really says nothing- it really addresses the need/problem you might have and provides a solution- even if it's tongue-in-cheek. This is great for an uplifting and fun gift, or even to keep at home or on your desk for a good boost during the dull work day- try it, you'll definitely " really feel better!"

Forget Dr. Phil, if you truly are down-in-the-dumps what you need is a good laugh. And this little book delivers!!! I don't know who the ladies who wrote 'I love my hair!' are, but they sure know how to put a smile on your face. My girlfriends and I sat around all night reading the affirmations & exercises out loud to each other until we were falling out of our chairs laughing. Hadn't had that much fun in a while...definitely a recommended read & gift!

Little Known Facts About Mr. Sinatra ... Very Interesting!

Photographer, John Dominis and former editor of Life Magazine, Richard B. Stolley, collaborated and came out with this interesting book about the world's most famous and charismatic singer, the legendary Frank Sinatra. In 1965, it was a very good year for the "Golden Boy" when he turned 50 and gave Dominis full access to his professional as well as his personal life for Life Magazine's cover story. Thirty-seven years later, Dominis and Stolley came out with this 144-page hardcover, which consists of numerous black and white photos of Sinatra with other movie and music celebrities. These photos were taken from Life magazine's archives and never-before published. It also includes some notable articles and anecdotes about his famous and celebrated life.

There are a lot of little known facts about him revealed in this fabulous book. Sinatra as described by friends and co-artists was perfectionist, fearless, kinetic, generous, attentive to details and had an acutely sensitive ears. According to his friend and musical partner for more than four decades, pianist Bill Miller, "he would pick the tunes himself and position them on the albums." This is a perfect example of his being attentive to details. Another fact is a reference to his famous song "Fly Me To The Moon" (also sung on the movie "Wall Street") with Count Basie & His Orchestra that made history when it was beamed to the U.S. astronauts as they landed on the moon for the first time in 1969.

According to Stolley, despite Sinatra's flamboyant lifestyle, he used bathroom potions and powders right off the drugstore shelf. And he was one of the biggest tippers in the world. He was always loyal to friends and usually courteous to strangers. He was a 'party animal' and slept only five hours a night. He turned on music, read a while and finally falls asleep. He listened to music, mostly classical and never his own records. These are just some of the many interesting and little known facts about Sinatra indicated in this book. Dominis is a very good photographer and his black and white images are all stunning and eye-catching. Stolley did a great job on the captions and articles and made them reader-friendly.

For Sinatra buffs, it goes without saying that if you are interested in his music, you'd also be interested to know more about his life. And this book will give you more insights about him that you'll find to be noteworthy. Likewise, please check out "The Sinatra Treasures" and "Sinatra: An Intimate Collection" for more interesting must-reads.

I LOVE this book. It's a collectors item no doubt. Pics of Frank that you've never seen before. Classics with Frank and Jackie Gleason and Sammy Davis jr. Frank at his house, on the massage table, in private places never seen. You can tell he wasn't posing for these pics. All naturally which is why it is so unique. And the texts keeps you wanting to roll thru the book without putting it down. What a life he had! What a book this is!!

Letter received from Msgr. Sears

April 6, 1996 From; Monsignor W. M. (Padre) Sears Englewood, Fl. 34295

I have just finished reading George Stewart's three volume set of books, The Circle, We Three, and There is The EGG- There is The SEED- Then LIFE gets Complicated. As he states in several places and in several different ways, He is writing about his thoughts on many very important issues which face us all on a daily basis, morality, politics, economics, respect for life (all forms), self respect, and human dignity. He feels that many of his readers have thought and felt about those things as he does. I know I do.

As a former teaching monk of the Merist Brothers and now a priest (R.C.) for nearly forty years, I hold steadfastly to many of Mr. Stewart's thoughts which are based on the basics, or good, sound, reasoned, common sense.

Though he claims no religious affiliation and considers himself a naturist. I find him to be Catholic (large C) in many of his thoughts and definitely very catholic (small c) because of his world wide experiences which have helped form and formulate his thoughts and ideas.

I highly recommend his books to anyone who is interested in finding reasonable solutions for the serious problems we have faced and continue to face in our society. Mr. Stewart's books help us to identify the core problems and then he offers reasonable and well reasoned solutions to those problems. Mr. Stewart goes beyond the symptoms to find the root. He does not say tsk-tsk and stick his head in the sand as many of us have. He will make you think.

Thoughts About Life...A Common Sense Approach to LIFE Penned by George J. Stewart

With a voice that rumbles like honey coated thunder, George J. Stewart, offers his thoughts and insight to younger generations. This booklet and tape are geared for the 16 and up age groups. George is what people call "a people person". He loves being and talking with other people regardless of their age or walk of life. He has always felt that you can learn something from everyone. I know this because I know George and we've had plenty of lively little discussions ourselves. Although we may not always agree on the subject matter, we still respect each other's opinions and thoughts. I'm 35 and George is about 60, so there is at least one if not two generations between us, but by talking with each other we have learned through each other. This is one of the most valuable gifts you could give anyone and one of the most important points in this booklet. Since my folks divorced when I was young, I wasn't really fortunate enough to have a grandfather of my own, someone who could pass on what they learned in life; their values, morals and principles, to me or my children, something which seems to be lacking in today's society. People are struggling to find these things in life. Like George, I believe that there are a number of people who also grew up without this input or influence in their lives, especially in the last 20 years.

In this booklet/tape combination, George tries to bridge this gap, by giving the reader/listener so called "food for thought". He feeds our minds scraps and tidbits of information, trying to fill the need to understand or make sense of what is really going on out there in the world. He wants to open the minds of the reader/listener and let them realize that there are alternate ways to look at or approach an issue. He questions what we all accept now as commonplace behavior and causes the reader/listener to wonder how or why we are where we are today as people. George points out the little things in life that maybe we all might take for granted and allows us to reexamine and think about these things.

One of my favorite lines in the book is when George is telling about the birth of his twins and the cost difference between 1962 and now. He says, "as far as know--the way to give birth hasn't changed, I wonder what has." He has a valid point there. Have greed and the need for the mighty dollar clouded everyone's good sense? George places a lot of emphasis on the importance of nature in our lives, from water and earth to sexuality and childbirth, adulthood and death. He questions and ponders the "political correctness" phase we seem to be going through as a country. He wonders about the condition of our government and if America is going through her "mid-life crisis".

George reminds us that we should not go through life with blinders on, but look at it from all angles and contemplate all aspects of an issue before planting our mental butts on one side of the fence or another. George also knows like a sponge absorbing water, people will absorb what they will and the rest will run off. This booklet is meant in that same respect. Use what you can, learn what you can, make the most of what you can, try to learn a little something from everyone, and most importantly try to give what you can. If just a little of what George wrote about sticks in our sponge like brains then George has accomplished what he has set out to do. This booklet/tape may not be for everyone, be forewarned, if you don't want to think or expand on your mental horizons then this booklet probably isn't for you, but if you want to open your mind and look at something through different eyes, you'll enjoy it.

Grandpa Stewart:. "Thoughts about life"

Stewart ties past to future

By MIKE JORDAN Staff Writer for The Spirit Lake Beacon

Raised during the great depression in Norfolk, Neb., George Stewart has lived a different life than most from the very beginning. He is the son of a doctor. Only when growing up in The Depression doctors got paid a little differently than they do now. If they got paid at all. Stewart said, "Our family ate a lot of vegetables back then because that is what dad brought home. Food was an acceptable payment for his services. It was something we could certainly use." Stewart joined the U.S. Navy Sea Bees in 1951, working eight years in the service as a heavy equipment operator. After the service he worked mostly in feed and fertilizer sales in the Midwest. By the early seventies Stewart had his own feed business in Storm Lake, IA. During the eighties and the farm crisis his business ended in bankruptcy. He and his wife raised five children. However after 30 years of marriage they were divorced. "Those were tough times for me but things have worked out for the best." The Peace Corp followed. Stewart spent five years, from 1987 to 1992 in Sri Lanka and Thailand with the corp. He worked in agronomy and marketing during that time. Many of his writings are from those experiences. Stewart said, "I could always write my thoughts better than I could verbally express them." His first book" There is the Egg,--There is the Seed,-- Then Life gets Complicated" is about his life and travels and the people he has encountered along the way. Much of what he relates in this book is drawn from his peace Corp experiences. Stewart's book "We Three" is a fictional piece about a family living in a country in revolution 20 years after a failed democracy. The people in the story are attempting to re-establish a democracy against the power of a high tech. army. "The Circle" a philosophical look at humanity in the 1990's gives Stewart's perspective on life gained from being away from America for five years. It speaks to such hot topics as global warming and our educational and political systems. It also talks about the dignity of man, humility, and happiness. This book contains some of Stewart's poetry as well. Most recently Stewart has turned to books on tape as a change in delivery of his experiences and ideas. "Thoughts About Life" his first tape, describes a common sense approach to life. This tape draws upon the wisdom of those who have gone on before. The times of sharing at Sunday dinners, church events, picnics, or drives in the country, bring out the experiences of his elders. The tape relates to a drawing upon the past, while getting to know ourselves and learning to like who we are. Stewart's latest offering "Solutions" is a tape that touches on the frustrations Stewart sees in our country of not knowing what is wrong. Not knowing what is wrong makes it very difficult to know what to do that is right. Billed as "Solutions for the next millennium We Can DO" it is presented as a can do attitude to life's problems. The message is not one of change for change sake but a fixing of what we have in place. The focus is on the processes of change. Stewart has drawn on his experiences of living in several different countries as well as those he served with in the Peace Corp. He says that learning to communicate in another language was the most challenging and the most rewarding. Being able to learn about the culture was the main benefit of being able to speak in their language. He also writes poetry, some of which appears in his books and on his tapes. He has started his own publishing company and is about to embark on a new phase in his life. Stewart said, "I have looked back on my life and it seems I have lived it in seven year segments. I'm embarking on what I call my marketing phase now. Ending my writing phase for a while." "It is attitude that makes the difference. We can all choose our attitude. It is what we think that matters. We have to be aware of our attitude and make good choices." Hoping to be a teacher-mentor inspiring people to learn Stewart said, "I want to give others a way to find their own path. Their own way to live and think. As writing has grabbed me, people need to find out whatever grabs them and do that thing." Stewart's works do bring a part of the past right into the future allowing the reader to draw upon the part that has meaning for them.

Finally, the other side of the story. From the amazing foreward by the publisher himself, R.J. Stewart, to the unpublished poetry of Janet and Stewart Farrar, this book is a delight to read. Many of us knew Stewart Farrar through his many writings on Wicca. Most practicing pagans use material written by Stewart, whether they realize it, or not. Now, we get to meet the man behind that in this biography. Liz Guerra, chosen by Stewart's widow Janet, pens the story of her late husband, weaving his life's journey that's simply a joy to read. With access to his archives, Ms. Guerra weaves a lovely tale of the man, who helped put Wicca on the map. And, most importantly, in the hands of anyone who read his books. We get a sense of this man, as Ms. Guerra deftly spins his story with-in a charming historical framework. Her easy-to-read work will be a joy to most readers seeking out an important piece of Craft history. While Ray Buckland physically brought the Craft to our shores, Stewart did so literally.

This is a must read biography of the man who who along with his wife(Janet Farrar) wrote some of the first and best books on witchcraft and what it is. After reading his biography, I really felt like I knew the man that Stewart Farrar was. Elizabeth Guerra obviously did a lot of research on this book and her efforts paid off. I can't believe this is her first book published. I look forward to her future works.

I found this to be a well written biography. I felt as if I knew Stewart personally from the background information and character observations that were written about him by Miss Guerra. Guerra's sources and researched information were carefully written for the world to see. I even felt like I knew Janet and her experience through working with Stewart and eventually falling in love with him. The whole book was not only a history lesson of that time, but a love story. A story of the human condition of finding spirituality and forgiveness as well as the ever continuous chore of growing as a spiritual being in a human body.

I was so moved by the book that I have started telling all of my friends about it, and I am ordering it for the main library at Yale University. It is a book well worth having as a research tool for scholars and a piece of literature that is sure to be a classic in due time.

It makes me hopeful for a follow up on Janet and Gavin's progress with Stewart's legacy they have inherited. I must say...the book has enlightened me on so much in the area of work that Stewart progressed and evolved into. I hope Miss Guerra will keep up her research and have a follow up on this legacy.

The Power in the Kingdom

I was sad to hear of Nigel Tranter's passing just days into the new millenium. This great historical writer who had the unique gift of making us see, hear, and feel the heartbeat of times long past, of kings half forgotten whose reputations were laid to rest often as quickly as they were.

Robert the Bruce, hero of Bannockburn, was the grandfather of Robert II by his daughter Marjory, wife of Walter Stewart. The kings from this union came to be known as the Stewarts, and Robert II and his son Robert III were two of the weakest. Both, prematurely doddering and unwilling or unable to wield the power in the kingdom, yielded the real power to Robert Stewart, Earl of Fife and Menteith. This last Robert is a character of the type frequently found in Tranter novels: a stern, unyielding master of realpolitik. (See James Stewart in WARDEN OF THE QUEEN'S MARCH for a reincarnation.)

The action is seen through the eyes of the fictional Jamie Douglas, descendent of the famed "Black Douglas" of Robert the Bruce's day, who tries to help shore up the monarchy for David, Duke of Rothesay, oldest son of Robert III.

Scottish history can be incredibly murky and involved at times, and that's what makes it so fascinating. Tranter has a gift for breathing life into periperal characters and putting them into play across a wide landscape and over a long period of time.

My favorite subplot involves the notorious Wolf of Badenoch, who burns down the Cathedral of Elgin, the so-called Lantern of the North, because of a dispute with its bishop. The Wolf's son, Alexander , becomes a steadfast friend and ally of Jamie Douglas.

It was my great fortune to read this trilogy while criss-crossing Scotland. I would recommend someone new to Tranter starting with the Robert the Bruce trilogy, but after that, read THE STEWART TRILOGY.

I just can't say enough about Nigel Tranter. He takes historical fiction to a new level. This is how it could have been. This trilogy covers the Scottish kingdom through the last days of Robert II, through Robert III and into the beginning days of James I in prison in England. All the events are through James "Jamie" Douglas, the eldest but illegitimate son of James Douglas, Lord of Dalkeith, and the wealthiest noble in Scotland and head of the second most powerful branch of the up and coming Douglas clan. In book one "Lords of Misrule", we see Jamie become a lord in his own right and come to court after he sees the murder of the Earl Douglas and seeks to find the killer. Robert, Earl of Fife and Menteith, second son of Robert II also sets himself up as Governor and soon to be Regent. A great side story of the legendary Alexander Stewart, the Wolf of Bandanoch, Earl of Buchan really moves the story along. And in the end we see Jamie engaged to Mary Stewart, a illegitimate daughter of Robert II.
In book two "A folly of Princes" Robert III has come to the throne but proves a weak and sad king who is run by his family. All are slowly set up and pushed aside by Robert, now Duke of Albany and Governor of Scotland. Jamie falls in with Robert III's heir Prince David who begins as a great match to out-wit and supercede his uncle Robert as Governor but ultimately fails. This leads to book three "The Captive Crown" where Jamie is forced into the highlands and befriends Alexander Stewart, son of the late Alexander "Wolf of Bandenoch" Stewart together they try to counter Albany's power and protect the surviving Prince James. All the while the Douglas clan continues to marry Stewart brides and gain titles and land. Then add in the ursurper Henry, now King of England who wishes to reinstate his ancestor Edward I, the longshanks, policy towards Scotland. A great, great read.

The best historical fiction I have ever read.

In this tale you follow the bastard son of a Douglas lord who in his first battle is knighted on the field for protecting the slain body of the Earl of Douglas. His loyalty to the earls' wife, the House of Douglas and to Scotland draw this heroic figure in to the intrigue behind members of the House of Stuart's tragic betrayal of the Scottish Crown.

Nigel Tranter has a rare and amazing gift for word craft. His ability to draw you into a tale is second to none. At every turn of the page I found my self reaching for a sword to help the young Jimmy Douglas.

First off, the illustrations truly are beautiful. They're well-defined, but also allow for aesthetic..um...gorgeousness. But that's only half of it. I loved this when I was little 70% for the story and 30% for the illustrations.
It's about a fellow who just leads a simple life at home. One day he performs some magic, which makes people come to him for more magic. The only wish he will not grant is to make the village mayor czar.
So the the mayor spreads rumors about Stupid Emilien. They reach the czar, who hears that a terrible monster means to overthrow him. Neat stuff happens, everybody gets their due, there are ships and magic and a czarevna and witty comments and best of all, a moral about material possesions. I have no doubt that were it not set in Russia, it would be a classic.

the best children's book ever

When I was a kid, my dad bought this book for me. the illustrations are incredible. It has a cute little story about a rabbit with magical powers and a czar. I love this book, and I have just purchased myself another for a university fine arts project.
