The book is well written and very exciting. It kept me riveted to my seat until I finished reading it. When I was done, I felt as if I had been part of the adventure - except I was still warm and comfortable, with no aching muscles!

Compelling, enlightening and entertainingReview Date: 2005-08-01
The book opens with a very readable history of everything from the birth of the universe and the evolution of humankind through to the building of civilization and the discovery of advanced technologies like genetic engineering and artificial intelligence. After speculating about designer babies and thinking computers, the book then considers the possibility that there may be some kind of purpose behind the evolution of a humanlike consciousness. This leads to the question of whether at the very highest level of reality there may exist a governing spiritual force rather than meaningless chaos or a mindless cosmic machine.
The reader is then presented with a series of compelling narratives that explore the many ways in which our traditional religions and philosophies have answered the question of human purpose. No sacred myth has been spared in an effort to uncover the most likely sequence of events that led to the formation of Judaism, Greek philosophy, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam. This enlightening foray into ancient history concludes with a brutally honest analysis of metaphysical worldviews and systems of cooperative morality.
From here things start to get very political as the book explores the recent history of democracy, focusing on the struggle for political and religious freedom - from colonialism and the French and American revolutions to the formation of the United Nations. Rather than glorifying warmongers, the book focuses instead on the underlying motivations for global conflict, showing political history to be mostly a blind and greed-driven contest for wealth and power. From this position, the book examines modern day problems like third world dictatorships and religious fanaticism, as well as discussing issues like population growth and birth control.
In the closing chapters, the book reflects on the emptiness of western secular materialism, and explores humanism as both a worldview and a political movement in the form of human rights. After demolishing social conservatism and dismissing postmodern skepticism, the author attempts to establish a viable alternative to both moral relativism and the lingering influence of traditional religious morality. He proposes that by treating consciousness as a fundamental force of nature, we can derive a theoretical foundation for justice based upon the democratic decisions of free and educated people. The book closes by speculating about the social and political reforms needed to bring about lasting global peace and prosperity.
`Principles of Existence' offers a stimulating interpretation of the history of science, philosophy, politics, and religion. It introduces a different style of thinking that is likely to play an important role in twenty first century philosophy. Its fearless mythbusting and everyday language make it a thoroughly enjoyable book to read.

Born from desperation, Hitler hatched a plot to have F.D.R. assassinated, believing that in so doing the inevitable defeat of Nazi Germany could be overturned. The story is about the assassin,an escapee from Fort Lewis POW Camp near Tacoma, Washington and the Secret Service agent assigned to capture him. There is action from the beginning when Kurt Monck escapes from the camp to the pulse-pounding finish with a wheelchair-bound F.D.R.
Thayer captures the climate of the United States' domestic front, the fear and concern of the people and the effects of a war economy. He describes the use of innovative investigative techniques in their infancy; the thoughts and feelings of Roosevelt and his relationship with Lucy Mercer and the pressure and anxiety felt by John Wren, the agent with the responsibility to hunt down assassin Monck before he completes his world- altering assignment.
This story was a pleasure to read and is highly recommended for those with a taste for adventure and patriotism.

A very informative account of the conception, launch and first year of a brand new Grand Prix race team. The book is extremely well written and supplemented by beautiful photography in both b&w and colour.
Now that Stewart Grand Prix has been bought out by Jaguar, this book is a must for any Formula One fan and provides a much valued documentary of this era of Grand Prix history.

Excellent Account of Canadians in Bomber CommandReview Date: 2001-07-08
However the stories within the book reflect the awful war as experienced by all bomber crews during this horrific campaign. I found the personal accounts to be sad, heroic and sometimes funny but the image that remained in my mind after finishing this book was the untold numbers of men who died and never had the chance to tell their stories. How many crews left their bases on a mission never to return and none of their comrades and families ever knew what happened to them?
They were swallowed up in the dark of night and became victims of German night-fighters or flak, their planes never seen again. After reading this book you'll get an understanding of what these men went through, some of the stories are just mind numbing. In particular is the story of Andrew C. Mynarski, 6 Group's sole Victoria Cross winner. This brave 27-year-old Canadian was a mid-upper gunner on a 419 Squadron Lancaster who lost his life during a mission in June 1944 (pages 276-278).
The narrative is fast paced, informative but never boring or dull. The story is well told and is a brilliant account of the harsh realities of an aerial bombing campaign as conducted by the RAF over Germany. The book starts with an introduction to the first bomber offensive in 1917 and finishes with an account of the 1990 reunion of the survivors. The authoritative text has numerous personal accounts of the aircrews woven into the story and overall the book reads well.
The only complaint I have with this book is the standard of the photographs. I would have liked more and of a better quality. Regardless of that this is still a great story and I think that anyone who has an interest in this period or who really wants to understand why these men did what they did and what happened to them then this is the book to read.
