Very well written, and fascinating. The author gives the reader an 'insider' view of the circus world; this includes an objective and respectful portrayal of the brave and talented people. I appreciated the honest perspectives, i.e., hearing 'the other side of the story' in terms of animal rights. It is a beautiful, touching, absolutely fantastic story.

A Fantastic Read

I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this book, from the subject matter to the personality of the author to the quality of the writing, which is excellent. At times, it reads as luridly and poetically as a novel. If you are enamored of the circus, as I am, and would like to run away with one for a while--even if only in your imagination--this is the book for you.

A terrific read, by turns hilarious and poignant

For a month in spring 1997, Wilkins traveled with the Great Wallenda Circus, a gritty group of seasoned circus vets, on a trip through a remote stretch of Canada. Facing such obstacles as unyielding immigration regulations (for both animals and performers), unprecedented flooding with unseasonable temperatures, and fierce competition from another circus, the Wallenda performers (led by Karl's grandson, Ricky Wallenda) show their merit as troupers in the truest sense of the word. Interspersed with descriptions of the circus's performances in the often-chilly and poorly lit hockey venues of Manitoba are the stories of the circus's performers and crew, each of which reveals a different facet of the daily dangers of circus life: unpredictable (and sometimes in-bred) tigers, vendetta-holding elephants, unstable rigging for aerial acts, and the omnipresent fatigue that can make a performer misstep minutely, but fatally. Beyond these dangers, however, is another threat to the circus's performers, which Wilkins chronicles beautifully and movingly: the decline and fall of the circus in America. It's a casualty with complex causation, including the senescence of Shriners (who sponsor a large number of American circus performances), the rise of the animal rights movement, and the effect of television, with its showy tromp l'oeil special effects, on our expectations for entertainment. Is watching a 370-pound man put an elderly, blind elephant through a series of slow-moving tricks enough of a thrill for audiences raised on car chases and gunfire? Wilkins thinks so, and after reading this wonderful book, so do I.

I've enjoyed all of Jennifer's books, but I think this one is the strongest yet. A funny, engaging look at one girl's unexpected (and at first unwelcome) overseas journey--with humor that deepens, rather than trivializes, the book's more serious moments.

I can't begin to express the enjoyment I and my daughter had of this book. We still refer back to it seven months after we read it. This book shows the value of giving your children a true WORLD of experiences. It was very hard to put down and we faced a range of laughter, suspense, sadness, reflection and happiness. My daughter and I read the book one month before a three week family trip to Brazil (including the Amazon Jungle and indigenous/African cultural sites). It was a perfect read from the child travelers point of view and even more perfect was the importance of being open to learning about other people's cultures and experiences. No travel guidebook could have been as exciting and fun as this book for my child. If you can't fly to some distant place, pick up this book with your child and have an adventure. I recommend it for children 8 years and older.

Comic adventure story in exotic setting

"Close Encounters of a Third World Kind" lives up to its title. Twelve year old Annie is off on the adventure of her life, as she treks to Nepal with her family (Mom, Doctor Dad, and little sister) to provide health care in a rural village. This is definitely an out of the mainstream book with its exotic and unusual setting. Author Jennifer J. Stewart's trademark humor is always there, as well as a certain ick factor in common medical complaints, but this is much more than a lighthearted tale. The friendship Annie develops with a younger Nepal girl is genuine. Highly recommended.

Written for compensation committee members and those who work with them, this text covers: information on the committee's responsibilities; ways to organize a committee; legal position of the committee; selection and training of members; a broad framework for accounting, tax, and securities rules; and the basics of compensation programs. It examines current issues on executive employment agreements, option repricing, reload stock options, pooling-of-interests accounting, and new accounting rules. It provides guidance, especially for small- to medium-sized companies. Includes detailed information on rules and regulations, comparison charts to monitor the progress against compensation strategies, an enormous glossary, and information and training resources geared to committee needs. This is a unique and exceptionally valuable reference for compensation subjects that require committee action. It has exceptional technical depth and clarity. As a compensation consultant myself, I highly recommend this book. James Reda has done an outstanding job!

Boards of Directors, and especially compensation committees within the board, are in a period of transition. They are required to be more independent from the company and its management than ever before, and the mega-compensation packages of CEOs is now getting more negative publicity, regulatory scrutiny, and public pushback. This valuable handbook can provide compensation committee members with helpful information on what to do and how to proceed in discharging their responsibilities.

The book has 15 chapters divided into three parts.

Part One describes what the compensation committee is and does. It also covers how the board should go about selecting and training the members of the compensation committee. CEO succession and evaluation is covered in a very helpful way as is the issue of director compensation (since they have so much more to do nowadays).

Part Two covers the legal and regulatory issues boards and committees face. It covers issues of corporate governance (from the board's point of view), disclosure of executive and director compensation, securities issues, tax rules and issues, accounting rules and issues, and ERISA and labor law, rules, and issues.

Part Three deals with the practical applications of these rules, regulations, and duties. It covers executive employment, severance, and change-in-control arrangements, incentive compensation, equity based compensation, executive pension-benefit, welfare-benefit, and perquisites. There is also a chapter dealing with option grants, the repricing of stock options, and if the company should "go dark", which is different than going private.

While not the most lively material, the authors do a great job of keeping it from becoming too dry or dusty. And if you need to know this material, you will love this book's organization and wealth of helpful information.

I was lucky enough to find a 1985 ed. of this beautiful book for $10 at a book clearance store. It is my favorite fashion reference book and I would find it a deal at $65. It is divided into 7 different catagories (ie. The Founders, The Purists, The Entertainers etc.) and covers 61 designers from Worth to Armani. It is full of wonderful B&W and color photographs of models and movie stars wearing designer masterpieces.I would like to see the updated version- does it cover other designers like Mizrahi,Sander,Versace etc. That would be a welcome addition. I will enjoy my book regardless... Have fun reading the bios and looking at the beautiful clothes!!

I found this in the library. Totally great. It has the most beautiful fashion photography. I stood there for about half an hour just flipping through. It was written in 1985 so the 'modern' part has a bit of a retro feel, but that definitely works in the context. Some very gorgeous pictures from the thirties, fifties, etc.

I will try to get my hands on this definitely! A coffee table book that I would definitely read (over&over) :)

Well-written review of the 20th century's great designers, discussing the evolution of style. Very similar to Fashion: The Century of the Designer by Konemann Inc., which is very much a chronological approach, rather than philosophical. Both books use many of the same photos and drawings.

Cranial Nerves is great for helping medical and graduate students understand some of the spatial relationships with cranial nerves. It gives a clear and concise review of each cranial nerve and then adds some valuable clinical aspects. The use of color coding throughout the book helps the student to follow a cranial nerve or component throughout the various diagrams in a logical fashion. Most of my class has or has borrowed this book even though it is not even listed on the required or recommended readings for the Neuroscience class! All in all a wonderful book.

I wish I would have found this book earlier! It is an excellent resource for neuro/anatomy.

It maps out each cranial nerve, explains its course, functions, etc. in clear text. I liked how it had a different color for each modality (general sensory afferent, branchial motor, etc.) and how it explained areas in which there are differing opinions; it helped me to reason things out when texts/professors conflicted.

Thank goodness a kind soul handed this down to me, because I think $43 is a bit steep....

"The Curse of the Viking Grave" is the seqel to "Lost in the Barrens". Both books are great adventure stories for young people and adults. My dad is in his 80s, a lifelong outdoorsman, and he really enjoyed reading this book. As in "Lost in the Barrens", there are a lot of authentic details about survival and the history of the north, including fascinating parts about hunting methods of the Eskimos, early Viking explorers, and the "stone men" of the tundra. There are many lessons about personal strength and courage, and valuing others. This is one of my favorite books to re-read and to pass on to youngsters and anyone who likes roughing it in the out of doors.

This is the sequel to "Lost in the Barrens" (1956), written in the mid-1960s. Both books tell the story of a youth who is orphaned and sent to be with his trapper/outdoorsman uncle up in the far north of Canada. In this volume, the southern authorities appear on the scene, wishing to remove the still underage central character back to the south, for "his own good." In company with an Indian girl and an Eskimo lad, our hero sets off into the northern wilderness, trying to keep one step ahead of the police. Mowat then brings in the story of an old Viking grave which he had already woven into the first volume. What follows is a voyage of discovery during which the three members of the team help each other to overcome the hardship of the land, as they travel down a river road known only in the folk lore of the northern tribes, and not used in generations. The story hangs finally on this question: will they make it?

It is a thrilling journey and a fine novel and if your children don't appreciate it, I'm sure you will. It's a fascinating journey into native cultures as well, although I believe there is some debate about what right a man like Farley Mowat has to even get involved with "their" culture. For me, the sensitivity of books like this one, whether towards man or the environment, speaks volumes by itself.

Loved this book and gave it to all my friends. We all found it funny, wise and uplifting to see the stories of so many women woven together in such an interesting way. Personally I treasured it for the shared discussions that we had about it, we all enjoyed talking about the truths we saw in it. We can see that we are not alone in our experience and we learned from it at the same time that we laughed. Great book!

As a long time fan of Barbara Moses, I had been waiting for Dish for a while but knew that this author would eventually get around to writing a book that transcends career and touches the broader context of women's lives. Spending a rainy Saturday with Barbara and the other women whose voices she shared was almost like attending one of her seminars - chatty, provocative and ultimately validating and helpful. Girl friends are great but there are few observers of the broader scene with the wisdom and perspective that Barbara brings to the debate of how do I manage my career, create a personal life and deal with all the other complications that life has thrown my way. As the most personal book that Barbara Moses has written, Dish also provides glimpses into the woman herself - and this humanizes the subjects she has chosen to write about even further. Unlike other self help and career management books - which tend to preach - Barbara writes from the trenches. She is one of us and I liked that a lot. So find 4 hours or so, curl up in your favorite chair and enjoy.

I found Judge Stewart's Divorce Handbook for California to be not only incredibly thorough, but also quite easy to understand and free of condescending "legalese". In fact, there is an extensive glossary of terms that I could quickly refer to if I was at all unsure of a legal concept. This book is superior to the "do it yourself" variety, because it illustrates a variety of legal options for the reader, including how to hire a competent attorney and yet protect yourself financially. Because divorce is such a complicated and emotional process, it is reassuring to have a clear and comprehensive resource to turn to for info on a variety of legal issues, such as spousal support, division of property, custody, attorneys etc. I enthusiastically recommend this extremely useful book!

Review Date: 2000-10-27
As presiding judge of Silicon Valley's Santa Clara County Family Court, Judge Stewart has made decisions regarding the dissolution of literally thousands of California marriages. He knows what he is talking about, and in this fascinating account he provides the strategies to enable people to come though the process with as little damage to themselves, their children, their spouses, and their finances as possible. Anyone facing divorce in California, or elsewhere, for that matter, should buy this book and study it carefully.

Dispelling eight popular myths such as the popular misconception that the judge hearing a divorce case will have substantial experience with divorce law, Judge Stewart begins by showing how to avoid financial disaster and how to select an attorney. He then goes on to give rare insights into how a judge in fact determines child custody and support matters, spousal support, the fate of the family home, and attorney's fees. He gives practical advice on how to protect oneself physically and emotionally.

In short, Judge Stewart has written an insider's frank, fascinating, and somewhat frightening view into the workings of California divorce courts. The book could well provide the stimulus for a great TV dramatic series. Congratulations to an outstanding, thoughtful judge for providing a superb, practical, account of the workings of family law courts in California.
