This book gives quite a bit of history as far as religious orders in the U.S. and the kind of work that they have done over the years. I also enjoyed the photos because I feel that they helped me to understand the history better. And it's interesting to see how the nuns and sisters have dressed over the years.

It is the most complete history book representing a sample of the many different orders of sisters, and their good works.

This book has excellent pictures on the nuns in the full traditional habit thru out the book, with quick accounts of the various religious orders. In the back of the book is a dateline of all the religious orders of Sisters and the institutions they founded in the United States such as catholic hospitals, and colleges. Its an wonderful resource on any person researching the history and traditions of the Catholic Sisters (nuns) who have served our country as educators and health care professionals.

A few years ago I took a college course on the history of health care in the US. I noticed that there was a strange neglect to mention all the work that sisters have done in hospital/nursing. It is good to see a book that gives us a good description of this and other work. It is amazing to see these women working against such adversity, and achieving so much. Our usual image of 19th century women does not include administrators and CEOs, but that is what these women were. They served God and their fellow humans in remarkable ways. It made me nastalgic for the days of plentiful vocations.

An enjoyable tale of adventure in one of the most beautiful areas on the planet. Readable and enjoyable.

I've read this book four times, and will surely read it again someday, as I have all the other Marty titles. Sid Marty's "laugh out loud" stories about the Canadian Park Service and his adventures (misadventures) are a true Canadian classic. His remarkable tails of bears, rivers, horses and the mysterious "diamond hitch" keep the reader entertained as well as teach a lesson about park ecosystems and man's seemingly inherent need to mess it up. Good companion book for those summer holidays to the Canadian Rockies. A good fun read.

I read this book on a camping trip in the Kananaskis. I looked forward to my lunch breaks on a rock by a lake or at the top of a rock scree so that I could continue my reading.

Marty takes you with him as he explores and cares for his territory. He teaches you what he can, but the lessons only sneak up on you...like the time I rounded a corner on a narrow trail and found myself face to face with a moose and her calf...'never get between a grizzly and her cub, that's when you're in trouble'...the lesson seemed applicable in this case, so I slowly made my way past rather than reaching for my camera.

I find I value the parks much more after reading Marty's book and hope for their future.

Non-fiction can be difficult but Sid Marty handles it with obvious skill and a passion for his job. Marty discusses historical development of National Parks as well as the problems created when we love them to death and he does it as someone who obviously cared deeply about the history and importance versus the state of politics in the management of the parks.This is the best piece of non-fiction I have read in a very long time. I wanted more. The Invocation is worth the price of the book alone and Canadian Park Service's loss of Sid Marty is literature's gain.

Mr. Marty's first book should be required reading for anyone venturing into the resplendent Rocky Mountains of Canada. His vivid style and humourous, at times startling, observations are in themselves worth the effort. Mr. Marty's book will leave you with fond memories of places few of us have visited. As a result the reader may begin craving a visit to this superlative domain. Bravo! It is worth mentioning that his second book, "Leaning on the Wind", is marvelous and insightful as well. He is a true Albertan treasure...

if you know a child or adult who needs a good fun laugh and has the imagination to enjoy this child/adult book then don't hesitate to get it. i received it just before new years day and had a good laugh to blow 2007 blues away completely. know someone in hospital who is allowed to laugh --- best gift ever. my father would have enjoyed this book during his hospital stay. i intend to share it with him shortly and he's 84.

Excellent Book. Fun Read. We loved the Edge Chronicles - this is just as good.

My granddaughter and I share a love for these books and enjoy reading them and then talking about them. Great book!

Muddle Earth is a great humourous book, which will make you laughing in a min.
Joe is a normal school kid on Earth, that is until he gets sucked up to Muddle Earth with his dog, Henry by a Wizard Randalf that only knows half a spell and who turns him to a warrior hero. The other thing is, he can't go home! He's stuck with Veronica, a sarcastic talking budgie, the clueless Wizard Randalf, and Norbert the Not-so-big, a troll, who's obsessed with baking, and icing sugar.
Soon he finds out that the thing about Mudddle Earth, is that it's really muddled! There's cutlery stampedes, talking trees, and babbling brooks.
AND He's expected to fight dragons, defeat trolls, and Stop Dr. Cuddles from taking over Muddle Earth!
This was a really great book, with a humourous plot, and with even more funnier characters! 5 stars just isn't enough for this book!

I thought that this book was great. From the very beginning it hooks you. I picked up muddle earth because a friend of mine was reading it. It has a great plot that is entwined throughout the whole book, you're always wondering how the silverware fit in. I highly recommend this book. Don't drink anything when you're reading this book, I guaruntee it will come out your nose.

I enjoyed this book alot. Although I am 32 years old, I still enjoy reading the stuff that kids today read. I think it was definitely worth the read.

This book is great for children playing hockey and want to hear what the Screech Owls are doing. There is also a show of The Screech Owls.

A very good book for kids who love hockey

My older boys love this series! My oldest has been playing travel hockey for 10 years (he's 17). He started reading the Screech Owls when he was 10 years old, but when our 2nd son started reading them several years ago, and newer stories were written, I'd catch Nicholas reading them, too (literally only taking minutes to polish it off!). Our 2nd boy doesn't play hockey (golf and tennis), but he truly enjoys the series. He already put all the news Screech Owl books on his Christmas list for this year.

The funny thing is I found this series in LAKE PLACID, NY (our favorite vacation spot) in my favorite book store. How excited was I that I found a book that would keep my son's attention because of hockey, in Lake Placid, about Lake Placid?! It was a win win. Reading is so important, and it's hard sometimes to find interesting book series, especially for boys. So I thank Roy MacGregor, and hope he keeps writing. I only wish to find more authors who would touch on other sports subjects (besides baseball) like Mr MacGregor does. Also, I would love if Mr MacGregor would write books that my 7 year old would enjoy.

Finally, a young adult series about hockey! For young fans of the game, the Screech Owls series is right on target. If you are interested in hockey action, mystery, and teamwork, this is the series for you.
A team of Canadian hockey players travels to Lake Placid for an international tournament, and soon discovers that they have more to deal with than playing hockey. Sarah Cuthberson, the team captain becomes the target of sabatoge, and it's up to Travis Lindsay and his teammates to save the day (or night, even though Travis is afraid of the dark).
Hockey players will appreciate Travis' play-by-play account of the games, and everyone will enjoy the humorous dialogue among teammates.
Some language may offend the very young (or at least their parents). Overall, a must read for those interested in hockey

The only thing wrong with this book is its unavailability. Out of print since 2005, this is quite simply the finest cofee table book on national parks ever made, bar none. Incredible paper and print quality. I have given this book as a gift several times.

Despite the seemingly mediocre title of this book, the pictures are anything but average. Here, you will find landscapes of various different types and beauty, from rugged cliffs to lush forests and waterfalls. The natural beauty of this book will challenge anyone who believes that photography is not an art, as Meunch has an unbelievable talent for it. In fact, while Udall is a good essay writer, I would even go so far as to say that Meunch should be credited as the author here. Not only does he capture breathtaking images, but his perspective is amazing as well, particularly in his forest photos. The forest section of the book perfectly represents the vastness of the trees, making me feel as though I'm a nymph or some other woodland creature marveling at the majesty around me. Whether you are a nature lover or have never appreciated it before, I recommend you get this book now!

This is one helluva book. Thank you Kutti. The photographs would make an nature enthusist drool with sheer glee, the text by Udall brothers is so refreshing, makes you wanna follow their paths. David's large format photographs are guaranteed to take your breath away. It did for me..Amazing..and the book is big and heavy..with the highest quality paper possible. Buy it..I am planning to get some camping equipments really soon...:))

"National Parks of America" is a wonderful collection of photographs from the National Parks in the United States. David Muench does a marvelous job capturing some of the the most beautiful places in the United States. His photographs include the Alaskan National Parks, the Grand Canyon, the giant redwoods in Redwood National Park, the giant sequoias in Sequoia National Park, the natural bridges in the national parks in Utah, Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, Old Faithful geyser in Yellowstone National Park, Isle Royale in Michigan, and the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina and Tennessee. There is a map of all of the places in the National Park System, and an essay by Stewart L. Udall, former Secretary of the Interior under Kennedy and Johnson, and James R. Udall. I cannot recommend this book enough. You must see it to fully understand what an outstanding book it truly is. It made me want to visit these places as soon as possible!

This is the book with the most beautiful pictures of America's National Parks I have seen so far. The print quality of the photographs is excellent. I have given this book as a gift to many of my friends and relatives!

Unfourtanitly, this book shows us just how our justice system has failed us. I read true crime books avidly, and have for many years,this book has stuck with me mainly because it made me angry that someone could continue to get away with murder so many times,and slip through the fingers of justice whithout notice. The book is brilliantly written and takes the reader to places they may not want to go. I belive that if you read this book you will agree.

Assuming Bob Stewart is not one of the probably justifiably obscure Bob Stewarts found in a search of Amazon which yielded 34 items listed, this is either a terrific first foray into true crime, or "Bob Stewart"'s a pseudonym, and, because this is a terrific read, I, for one, would like to know whose. Either way, fans of the genre daren't miss 'No Remorse.' Especially brilliant is Stewart's reconstruction of a 1966 triple murder; wonderful and often chilling anecdotal information from the victims' families highlights fine reporting of the killings, and Stewart's account of the stay of execution granted Kenneth McDuff--which had unexpected and tragic consequences twenty years later--is highly entertaining. This is a book which proves the rule of my liberal, anti-death penalty resolve, and such tests are always welcome. And yes, it's suitably gory.

Bob Stewart can write! I'm a retired Chgicago Police Sgt. and I could not put this book down! The writer glues you to every page - it's like your there and you can feel everything as if you were on the scene...This is a must read for everyone who loves a fine investigation, and who wants the "real stuff" and not fluff from some "wanna bee who done it nut". Having conducted my own investigations for many years, I can say the author, Bob Stewart could have had my job any day he wanted! Bob Stewart has done it again. To put it simply...outstanding! I found his literary performance riveting. I stayed up until 4 in the morning unable to put this one down. For fans of this genre, dont resist!! Let Stewart ingulf you in the web of intricate story-telling that only he can create!!

This book is a rarity in the true crime genre' and gives methodically researched details in the most interesting format. The story reads like a novel, a fiction, and you keep reminding yourself that yes, there really was someone as truly evil and sociopathic as McDuff. Fortunately he will never harm another person.

Wow~ this is an incredible story about a family that has their history recorded back to the 13th century. Fran gives me colorful visions of life in the South on a cotton farm. I can almost feel the heat and imagine that red dirt flowing through my hands as I see the 'double firsts' struggle to make their way in the world. They were certainly silent legends... ~jeanette

What an interesting story of family history. Written with a wonderful sense of humor and a genuine sense of pride in family. Frances is a wonderful storyteller. I could not put the book down until I was finished! If you love well-written family history, this book is a must read!

My sister, Frances McColl Stewart, has written a delightful book about our family heritage. The past comes alive with descriptive personalities shaped by the culture and traditions of the time. This book has sparked family controversies which are quite hilarious and all are inspired by this book to write their own story! I'm looking forward to reading them all - - although I hope Frances will be the ghostwriter. Her art of storytelling is pure genius and families everywhere will enjoy her book!

Even if you're not a McColl, this book will hold your interest. Ms. Stewart has a very descriptive voice and the family stories are priceless. Makes me want to write one of my own...

I loved this book, the writer has such a wonderful way of making the past come alive. I am not from the US myself and I felt that through this book I could take a glimpse at what life must have been like for the writer. Great read.

I just finished taking an oriental cuisine class less than a year ago and our wonderfully experienced teacher recommended this cookbook for continued enjoyment in oriental cooking and eating at home. I have truly enjoyed using this book. I am quite young so cooking is new and I really like the art of it. Carpenter and Sanderson I think are at there best by exposing us to meals designed complete with the use of the most exciting and eccentric flavors. This is my favorite part about eating, besides company and presentation. At any rate, I am glad to have begun to collect cookbooks with this as one of the first ones. Thanks!

One of Carpenter's best books (and all of them are good). He constructs interesting foods with varied flavors. None of them (at least so far) are difficult to put together. He's consistently the best cook book author that I know of.

This is a great cookbook! It's got a great combination of basic and highly creative recipes. It seems that with many Chinese recipes and cookbooks, everything tastes similar, just with different ingredients. This book's recipes are very broad in concepts, flavors, presentation and preparation styles (some stir frys, barbeques, dumplings,sautes,sauces, etc.). If we could only have one Chinese cookook, this would be it.

Hugh Carpenter is one of my favorite cookbook authors: James Beard, Jacques Pepin and Rose Levy Berenbaum being the others. All write with explanations for the process---why you do something the way it is indicated in the recipe---is it the author's whim, tradition, or vital to a successful result?! Hugh Carpenter tells you what to do as far as preparation, whether it can be done in advance, and all needed information regarding the recipe, including plating the final results. What separates this book from so many other very good cookbooks is the actual recipes. If you want to try your hand at asian cooking, this would be my guide of choice. As Frommers travel guides are to the traveler, so are Carpenter/Sandeson's books to the intrepid cooks. As another reviewer stated, it is not recommended to 'blind' try a recipe for guests---that is, don't plan to serve an untried recipe for the first time to guests. But with this book (or any of his others, for that matter) you can do this fearlessly. The flavors are vibrant, bold and he tells you if you need to raise the level of heat. Do what he says: if he tells you something needs to marinate overnight, or be cooked a day in advance to allow the flavors to mellow or settle, DO IT! He and his wife have traveled all over the Pacific Rim and bring authentic flavors to the American cook who wants veracity and integrity in their cooking.

Out of +150 cookbooks we own, this is one of the top five. Hugh Carpenter isn't afraid to have you use spices to produce wonderful dishes. His method of separating the recipe into advance preparation and cooking is a great help in preparing something new. His serving sizes are very accurate and menu ideas useful. The photography is outstanding and an added plus in first time preparation. At a dinner party, we rarely dare to prepare a dish we haven't tried, but have done this on five occasions using "Pacific Flavors", all with compliments from everyone. This book is not only an excellent cookbook, but a beautiful coffee table piece also.

Finally - a book that introduces the genus Heliamphora in all its glory. This is really the first book to do them justice. It includes dozens of stunning photos, morphology and habitat descriptions, fascinating analysis of trapping mechanisms, speculation about the environmental conditions that lead to the forms and the distribution of present day species, as well as some tentative discussion of the relationship between the three genera. Two minor disappointments - no mention of the new fossil discovery of an ancient member of the Sarracenia family from China (Archaeamphora), and no photos of Heliamphora sarracenioides, which it seems might be one of the more important species discovered in the last decade. I suspect both discoveries occurred too late to be incorporated because the book is otherwise quite thorough (and these new discoveries leave me hoping for a revised edition in the future). "Pitcher Plants of North America" is now by far my favorite carnivorous plant book ever.

Pitcher Plants of the Americas by Stewart McPherson is a very nice addition to any carnivorous plant enthusiast's library. It is very well written and easy to understand. The photography is spectacular. This book will give one a better understanding of the pitcher plants native to North and South America.

I've been waiting for years to get my hands on a book that covers Heliamphora more than superficially. This was it. Very in depth info on specific habitats for each species, full descriptions, amazing photos. A great mix of science and personal observation/commentary by the author.

Definitely recommend it!

This book is worth the price just for the photographs, to be sure. The coverage here is incredibly deep and you will find information on plants that no other carnivorous plant text covers, at least not with such depth and breadth of information.

The avid CP grower, and indeed anyone truly interested in pitcher plants in particular, should not miss this wonderful new book!

I have been working with state agencies to upgrade strategic plans and develop measurable performance goals, and this book has been an excellent resource. I loaned my personal copy of Stewart's book to the manager in charge of one department's effort. The next week I saw my copy was marked up and well used. The following week he gave me a brand new copy as he had purchased new books for his entire management team. The strength of the book is it gives you a common sense approach for getting started and following through with a plan for improving performance excellence. If your organization is even considering making an application for a Baldrige-based award, this is a great tool!

This book is excellent. The writing is well done and the ideas have plenty of practice to back them up.

Dr. Stewart and the team at SOMC have composed a must-read for every team leader and those aspiring to organizational leadership. Dr. Stewart takes concepts and principals of which we are all aware and makes them real. He allows us to see ourselves and the others with whom we interact at work in "3-D", offering insights for dealing with every different kind of leadership style. He even reminds us that we don't have to act on every situation. He actually gives permission to ignore certain behaviors and instructs how to deal with negativity and naysayers in the workplace. The book is most helpful in validating what I feel I'm doing right while setting me straight in areas I'm needing to improve in my quest to maintain my effectiveness in my leadership role in my company.
Reading is a luxury for busy people or at least it is for me, but if you only have time for one great book to put you to the top, this is definitely the one!
